Circus in the summeru by Ayla Miller

Circus lessons have occupied the school holiday break for young people without access to other holiday programmes, with 20 hours a week funded by the Ministry of Social Development under the direction of Circus Kumarani.

A high point of the experience was the 10th Northland Circus Festival which attracted local and international specialists over January 8, 9 and 10 at the Waipoua Campground.

The festival included workshops during the day and performances in the evening with live music, stalls and hangi.

Managing director of Circus Kumarani, Jenny Huriwai said the atmosphere was special, being the 10th anniversary of the event.

“We had aerial acrobatic workshops, international performers, juggling and some fire dancing in the evening.” The family orientated festival saw locals

and those from further afield gather to camp onsite and many people travelled from Auckland to make the most of the expertise demonstrated during the workshops.

“We had a really good core team of about 38 this year. We made sure it was clear who was doing what so it was really well planned and organised.

“Local businesses, Farmlands, Delta Produce and Douglas Logging also got on board to help make the event run smoothly.”

Circus Kumarani has been running the Breakaway School Holiday Programme in Whangarei and Maungaturoto, funded

p The Paparoa Point Rams won the second annual Whanaunga Touch Tournament held at the Kaiwaka Sports Complex. Twelve whanau teams were vying for the chance to win the title and prestigious Kerry Strongman trophy. “A large crowd enjoyed the matches as well as stalls and children’s activities. Proceeds for the day went to the Otamatea Marae. I would like to thank the many volunteers who helped make the day a great success,” said association manager Cheryl Anderson.

p Belinda Gummer took the opportunity to entertain the children of her friends and family with a group swimming lesson at the Dargaville swimming pools, building their confidence and ensuring they have the skills to be as safe as they can in the water.

p Millie Lay is holding the reins of miniature pony Ally surrounded by her friends at her seventh birthday party at Mangawhai Horse Riding. The girls each completed an obstacle course, going through poles, around barrels and over jumps where they learnt to lead the pony correctly. They then had their own riding lesson learning how to control the horse by themselves, and had to complete some horsey jobs which meant picking up horse poo in the paddock. The party finished with treats and birthday cake in the barn.

New role modelfor Kaipara youthu by Ayla Miller

Kaipara Abuse Prevention is welcoming Stefan Neuenschwander on board as their new youth mentoring coordinator whilst long standing manager Simone Matthews exits her roles after 10 years of service.

Simone began as coordinator for SAGES, a community-based mentoring programme, in May 2005. Since then the organisation has grown considerably and during her time with KAPS she has also worked as manager and youth mentoring co-ordinator.

She will be moving to be closer to her children who attend Manukura, a sports academy in Palmerston North, where she will be working for Start Tu Whanau as a youth community worker.

“I will be sad to leave this community as we have worked with and met some fantastic people but I am looking forward to follow and support my kids,” said Simone.

Stefan began with the organisation as a volunteer and having him on board as a male youth mentor coordinator will be a new experience for the previously female dominated group.

“The Kaipara community is lacking in active male role models and that is why we were fortunate to have Stefan as a mentor and now our mentoring coordinator,” Simone says.

“Research shows boys thrive on consistent boundaries because they know exactly what they can do and when they can do it.”

Stefan has worked at Air New Zealand for 25 years and says he is looking forward to starting the new role and growing the team of youth mentors.

The SAGES programme will be overseen by Yvette Gilchrist who is also a Strategies for Kids Information for Parents coordinator.

Stefan encourages anyone who has one free hour a week and wants to make a lasting difference in someone’s life to contact him on 021 899 847 to discuss what is required to be a youth mentor. ¢

Driving towards safer roadsu by Ayla Miller

Those stuck on their learners or restricted driver’s licences could soon receive some motivation to go for their full licence with Te Roroa Learning Assistance in Dargaville receiving a vehicle from Roadsafe Northland specifically for this purpose.

The manual Hyundai Getz 2008 has a safety rating of four and was purchased by Roadsafe Northland from Jane Mander Retirement Village resident Mrs Thornton who offered it at a discounted price for the cause.

Road Safety Education Programmes for Whangarei and Kaipara manager Gillian Archer says getting this far has been an 18-month long journey and to have this car available for the people of Dargaville is ‘just amazing’.

“The free course runs for 12 weeks and is designed for those who need help with their driving skills. They might already hold a driving licence and need to sit their next stage.

“It is intended for people who do not have a support system to help them learn to drive.”

Police officers working in conjunction with Road Safety Northland and Te Roroa encourage those sitting on learner or restricted to get their full licences and Senior Sergeant Ian Row says the most common way people end up in the judicial system is for breaching licence conditions.

Due to Dargaville’s lack of traffic lights or major roundabouts, mentors will take students for lessons in Whangarei to familiarise them with a variety of driving conditions and situations. ¢

Conquering the rocku by Ann Morgan

The Kaiwaka Sports Association’s sixth annual multi-sport event, the Top of the Rock family fun day, will be held on Sunday, February 14.

“The event caters for walkers, runners and mountain bikers, both recreational and competitive. There are a range of options available on the course: the five or 10 kilometre walk or run; the 10 kilometre run plus 15 kilometre mountain bike ride; 14 or 30 kilometre mountain bike route, and new this year is a fun bike course for under 10-year-olds,” said organiser Cheryl Anderson.

“The routes travel through some of Kaiwaka’s most scenic countryside — bush, lakes and farmland and you get the opportunity to climb iconic Baldrock Mountain. This is easier than the daunting view from the road suggests as there is a well formed track which spirals around the mountain.”

Competitors do not need to be concerned about their fitness level as there is no time limit on completing the events.

“We even have marshalls in utes following the tailenders who will give you a ride back if you get tired,” says Cheryl.

“Last year there were more than 350 participants and we are hoping to build on that number this time.

“TV3’s Brendon ‘Money Man’ Johnson will host the prizegiving with prizes for placegetters as well as lots of great spot prizes, including a mountain bike

Collectables, curios and conversationu by Ayla Miller

Furniture, lamps, collectables and other curiosities from a bygone era have taken over the old Plunket rooms in Maungaturoto, giving locals and passersby the chance to step into a world of antiques.

JCJ’s Antiques, Curios and Collectables run by John and Christine Mason and their partner Jules opened just before Christmas last year and John says they have had lots of positive comments from people who have dropped in to take a look.

The couple moved from Auckland two years ago to live in Paparoa and have been interested in antiques and collectables for many years.

“My wife and I are in our 70’s and collected glass and china for many years, specialising in some areas but having a reasonably wide selection.

“We have antique furniture, crystal lamps, jewellery, collectable china, glass and pictures.

“It’s somewhere people can come in, browse and chat. It’s more than just the selling side, there’s a social side to it as well.

“We used to do the antique markets and fairs in Auckland and we would come up for fairs in Waipu. We got a bit old for that and my wife wasn’t well for a while so we stopped doing it. It is

hard work — you are moving a lot of stuff around, and you have to be careful with it.”

John and Christine tend to specialise in the china and glass items along with some furniture restoration whilst Jules takes care of the old paintings and furniture.

“We have collected a lot over the years. Most of it has been sitting in boxes since we moved up from Auckland so it’s good to get it out on display.”

The store is open Wednesday to Sunday 10am-4pm. ¢

Celebrating internsu by Ann Morgan

Georgia Watt from Taranaki is Big River FM’s new intern for 2016 and is the 40th student the radio station has taught over the years.

“I come from Taranaki and have studied with the NZ School of Radio in Tauranga and this station came up as an option for an internship,” said 18-year-old Georgia.

“The school encouraged us to apply and I was accepted. I have always wanted to work in radio, it is a really fun job and it is exciting to be able to learn all the different aspects of it practically.

“There are lots of different roles in the radio industry — the work is very interesting. I like being on air and am also looking forward to working in promotions and getting out and about amongst the general public. It is great interacting with people.

“Dargaville is a small town and it is great that you can walk everywhere. I am looking forward to exploring the region as well.”

Georgia will be working alongside the current intern Lena Schmidtke from Germany.

“Lena came as part of her english studies and is enjoying her time at the

station. She has taken opportunities to travel around the country and learn different aspects of our culture. Her english is really improving, it has been great having her on board here,” said sales manager Peter Martin.

“We are sure Georgia will enjoy her time here. On her first day she got straight into it. We are really impressed with how quickly she got a grasp on things. She will learn how the station is run, including the basics and generic workings along with announcing, scheduling, producing, and interviewing.” ¢

Display for charityu by Ann Morgan

Mark and Pam Ottaway have been displaying Christmas lights on their front lawn on the main road into Kaiwaka for approximately 20 years and this year they raised more than $2,360 for the Kaiwaka Fire Brigade.

“The exhibition attracts hundreds of visitors every year, with some coming from out of town especially to see our display,” said Mark.

“We do it to give enjoyment for families and it started as a way to fundraise for the local fire brigade to help get a new vehicle and we haven’t stopped. They come each night for the two weeks before Christmas and teach the children fire safety.

“We add new features every year. This year we had Elsa from the movie Frozen, the Minions and Hello Kitty for the first time.”

There are penguins, snowmen and polar bears along with a train that travels around the garden.

“It’s fun and we meet so many people. One lady this year cried because she is from America and it reminded her of home and she couldn’t go back for Christmas. We had visitors from Russia and others from

countries that normally have displays. The children love the snow machine and make snow angels and roll on the ground experiencing snow.

“Kaiwaka is a great town, we have been here for 55 years now. The community are good, we have one of the best sports complexes in the North which the locals helped build. It’s a really great place to live,” said Mark. ¢

Volunteer firefighter Carl Horscroft moved with his partner Heather Bradley and step daughter Amber-Marie Inglis to the Kaipara in 2015 from Ngaruawahia.

“I grew up in Wellsford and moved to Mount Maunganui when I was 23-years-old. In later years I ended up in Ngaruawahia but the cost of living in the Waikato was getting quite expensive. We wanted a slower lifestyle so decided to research other areas and found Dargaville very affordable to buy property in,” said Carl.

“When we moved here I saw Grainco Northland and sent them an email asking if they had any work vacancies as I had worked as a feed mill operator in the dairy industry in Hamilton for Ingham. I was at the right place at the right time and Grainco employed me. It is a great job, I couldn’t ask for anything better. I enjoy the interaction with the clients, they are very friendly.”

Carl has also been a volunteer firefighter for 13 years and is now a part of the Dargaville Volunteer Firebrigade.

“The station here is really friendly, accepting and encouraging. The other volunteers have welcomed me with open arms and are very sincere in all that they do. They are all very hard workers. Being a firefighter is really satisfying.

We get to help and meet so many different people in many different ways and the challenge is very rewarding. I highly recommend others who may be interested to join. It is great for your self esteem and socialising, and the training is invaluable. It certainly keeps you fit too.

“Living in the Kaipara is fantastic. People say hello to you on the street and you can actually talk to your neighbours and build relationships which isn’t always easy in other areas. We love it here, Dargaville is a very friendly town.” ¢

Another successful art pop up shop was held by the Dargaville Arts Association and organisers are planning to hold seasonal events to showcase fresh works by local artists.

Association secretary Gay Reed says “these pop up’s raised interest amongst locals and on most days saw around 50 people drop in to view the works on display with one day seeing over 100 visitors.

“A lot of people didn’t know about the Muddy Waters Ar t Gallery, including the locals, so we put them straight. I think the standard of the work was really good. The exhibition we held in August was great but the standard of the work this time was even higher. People were just amazed at how good the artwork was for a small town like Dargaville.”

The pop up gave artists and art enthusiasts a chance to interact and Gay says she found the most rewarding part of the event was spreading the word about the association and encouraging people to become Friends of the Arts Association. “We have some exciting plans for the future

p Dargaville Arts Association secretary Gay Reed with some of the artwork on display at the most recent art pop up shop

where more people can get involved and make it a centerpiece for Dargaville’s arts community.”

Gay, who has been painting seriously for approximately five years, says there has been an increasing amount of interest at the Muddy Waters Art Gallery which she believes is a result from the pop up’s they have been holding.

“People are coming into the gallery and asking for certain artists so that’s really good and some of the artists are really starting to get a following which is what everyone wants.” ¢

p Jesse Andrew is on holiday from Auckland and went exploring to Poutu Point with his grandfather. “We stopped at the sand dunes before the point to go fishing and exploring. It is so beautiful here,” said Jesse. “It is like a desert, and there were lots of boats out on the water. It was interesting to look around the dunes — you can find so many different things that have washed ashore. My aunt’s dog Badger and I thought here would be a great spot to stop and watch the others fishing.”

Action group press onu by Ayla Miller

A group of concerned Warkworth and Rodney residents are banding together with the intention of restoring democracy to their region by proposing a new unitary council.

The members of the community, ranging from farmers, urban residents, retired and business people, formed the Northern Action Group in 2009 following the overturn of the government select committee’s recommendation to leave the area out of the proposed Auckland super city.

The group believes this decision ignored t he commun i t y ’s democratic preference.

The group believes a unitary council would see an estimated 15–20 percent reduction in rates and greater employment for the area.

“We feel that the unitary council will be much closer to the people and more democratic. Despite people thinking of Warkworth as being urban, if you look at North Rodney in it’s entirety, it is very much a rural area. The people being elected and making decisions will be rural people,” says Northern Action Group chair Bill Townson.

“The definition of reorganisation is to pursue better local government,

p Northern Action Group chair Bill Townson believes a unitary council will establish a democratic decision making process for the Rodney area

one of which is the efficient democratic decision making.

“Our proposal has to be judged against those criteria and compared with any alternatives that come in and the status quo.

“We think we have a fairly solid case which more than satisfies the requirements and is certainly much better than what we are getting at the moment from Auckland Council.” ¢

A market for the communityu by Ann Morgan

The Wellsford Market Mingle is held the first and third Saturday of every month in the new library plaza.

“A group of five community members started the market in the beginning of August last year,” said co-organiser, Sydney Grace.

“We are doing really well. We are getting lots of vendors and usually fill the plaza with plants, eggs, honey. and we also have a hairdresser bringing hair products. There are tools and a sausage sizzle and a coffee truck. There is a real variety of different kinds of vendors which was our big thing for doing the market. We wanted all sectors of the population out. One of the vendors is more than 90-years-old.

“It is a really good community event. Our plan is to bring everyone out — the young and the old. As Wellsford isn’t a large town a lot of things happen by word of mouth.

“I love making the advertising flyers funky as you need something that is

going to appeal to the public to get the message out there. After the market I change what the animals say on the flyer and repost it to Facebook. I use a different animal for each market.”

The tables are used by a gold coin donation and Sydney believes this allows people to have a go at selling at the market.

“We have live musicians and different demonstrations happening such as the local Tai Chi group doing a demonstration.

“We are trying to be creative. We hope to teach how to do watercolour painting at the next market.

“It is not just a place to come and buy or sell, it is a place for the community to come together — that is why it is called the Wellsford Market Mingle. We wanted to have a place to help the community socialise.” ¢

BUILDING & RENOVATIONPractical tips to revive your deckingu by Andy Bryenton

Salt air, sun, dirt and mould can give Kaipara decks a hammering. But it’s easy to restore a beautiful finish to your outdoor spaces, increasing the value of your home and adding years of life to tired timbers.

The first place to begin is cleaning the deck surface — a process which can be achieved with or without chemicals. Debate among deck afficionados still rages as to whether using a simple electric water blaster or chemical treatments is best. Some say that a water blaster can damage the fibers of the wood, while those who prefer the blaster counter that chemical treatments can kill off more than just filth and mould. A favourite option is a low-pressure wash down with a water blaster or a hose and brush, followed by the use of an oxygen based ‘one hour cleaner’ designed specifically for moss and mould.

Next, rinse and let your deck dry. The next step will be to add ‘wood brighteners’ — spray on chemicals which open up the wood like the pores in your skin and allow the next step — the stain — to really penetrate and protect. Rinse and dry again before assembling your tools to get the stain on.

All the top renovators agree — when it comes to timber stains you get what you pay for. A trip to your local paint shop will help you get the right product for a beautiful result — take some simple info with you in the form of your deck’s area, location, intended uses and the type of wood from which it’s built. A good stain is an investment, so go for the good

stuff! When applying, remember that less can be more. Only apply as much stain as the wood can take, because to use more isn’t just wasteful, it can also cause a shiny or waxy layer which peels after just one or two seasons.

Work in between the boards with a paint brush for complete coverage — and let your deck ‘rest’ for about 24 hours before cracking out the barbecue and inviting guests to appreciate your work! ¢

Made in the shadeu by Andy Bryenton

A great way to extend your living area into the great outdoors, to beat the heat and to provide a family gathering place in summer, shade sails could not be easier to install around your home. Here’s how.

Placement is key. The point of the sail is for shade, so watch the motion of the sun and note where the shade from your sail will be cast as it moves across the sky during the day. Most shade sail areas will; see heavy use from noon to dusk.

Now it’s time to choose a sail and gather the tools you’ll need — easy-mix cement, a spade, loose scoria, heavy duty screw-in hooks, a power drill, and large, quality fencing-timber poles for the corners of the sail held away from the

house. You’ll also need tensioning gear — double-ended screw types or even ratchet tie-downs. Make sure that the distance you’ve planned out is roughly 10-15 percent bigger than the sail itself, as you’ll need space for tensioning.

The corners of your sail attached to the house must be firmly anchored with screw-in hooks. Find the ends of the rafters in your roof so that these hooks are sunk into good timber — a light tap with a hammer will help sound out sturdy mounting points. Start the holes with your power drill and then finish the

job using a screwdriver shaft through the hook for leverage.

Now it’s time to install the poles. You’ll need a 1.2 metre deep hole for most large shade sails, and if you’re working in soft ground it’s a good idea to pour 100mm of concrete into the base and let it set first as a footer. On solid ground — or when that concrete has cured — go direct to pouring in 100mm of scoria, then mount the post. If it’s free standing, it’s actually a good idea not to mount it straight up and down — a slight lean away from the tension of the sail will help keep things tight and tidy. This rule definitely does not apply

to posts attached to decking! Fill the rest of the hole with concrete, letting it slope gently away from the pole to aid in drainage. After allowing this to set for approximately two days, it’s time to hoist the sail. Hook up the ‘hard points’ to the house first, then apply tension a small amount at a time to the post ends, until the sail is taut. Remember that after a few days of flexing in the wind that this tension may have to be gently re-applied or increased.

Remember to make your shade sail easy to take down if storm winds are forecast — and enjoy a UV safe haven out of doors for you and the kids this summer! ¢

BUILDING & RENOVATIONHarvest your own homegrown greensu by Andy Bryenton

The trend toward sustainable living has crept into the suburbs, but its heartland is out here in rural New Zealand. Join the revolution by building your own easy-to-grow home vege patch.

There’s no need to be a top carpenter in order to get growing. And there’s no need to have green fingers — or lots of weekend downtime — when the garden you construct requires no digging! Find a sunny spot with good drainage, assemble some simple (perhaps even re-purposed) materials to made four sturdy walls, and you’re on your way. The walls should be just over knee-high to an adult, so crafty alternatives to boards and bricks (such as re-purposing a big tractor tyre) are as varied as your imagination.

The key to a no-dig garden is layering — creating strata of nutrients to support your growing greens. Start with a layer of newspaper, then lay in coarse straw, followed by pea straw. Haven’t heard of it? Ask at your local garden centre — this straw has been known since

medieval times as rich in nitrogen, promoting healthy plants. Sprinkle on lime and some fertiliser, than repeat, making two or three thick layers. Top it all off with compost made from your own kitchen vege scraps, or add a bag or two of seed raising mix from your local garden centre.

With adequate irrigation, you can alternate summer crops — tomatoes, zucchini, beans and pumpkins — with winter favourites like peas, spinach and brassicas.

The layers of rich compost, straw and organic debris will mulch and decompose down into a fertile growing base — simply add a new layer after each harvest and never dig your garden over — it’s the thick nutrient ‘layer cake’ under the surface which makes it grow so well. ¢

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OUR CUSTOMERS. LET US HELP YOU GET 2016 OFF TO A GREAT START!

Automotive excellenceu by Andy Bryenton

After what has been a stellar year for new vehicle sales the figures are in, and the motoring public have voted both with their approval and with their wallets to choose the top machines of 2015.

That popular forum of automotive excellence, the New Zealand Automobile Association Car of the Year awards, has turned up some interesting trends, with its top picks going to a few bold choices. Ahead of the pack and taking out the crown of top car for the past year is the diminutive, electrically powered BMW i3 — an indication that the reign of internal combustion is being challenged by new technologies.

It’s all petrol and diesel in the rest of the order though, with some surprises in store. Hyundai delivered a one-two blow, with their Tucson and Santa Fe SUVs scooping back to back small and large off-roader accolades. The new Mazda MX5 was a lock for best sports car. And the prestigious luxury car category went not to a Teutonic or American marque, but to the Hyundai Genesis. The statistics from the forecourts of New

Zealand tell another story though — one which is borne out by another year at the top of the AA’s polls for the evergreen Ford Ranger. The big ute with the four-year winning streak has not only cinched the title of best utility again for 2015 — it’s also been the best selling vehicle of any class. That means more Rangers took to the highway than any other kind of car, van, truck or motorcycle last year — toppling the long term favourite, the Toyota Corolla.

Opponents of the big blue juggernaut which is Ford’s flagship ute must be asking themselves how the runaway success of the Ranger can ever be superseded.

With a cosmetic re-design and new features for 2016, the Ranger continues to go from strength to strength, and figures are sure to look rosy for the new year coming into Field Days. Can the feisty Ford make it five in a row this year? Only time will tell. ¢

Expanding the possibilitiesu by Andy Bryenton

With 2016 upon us, the people behind the scenes at Can Am have wasted no time in delivering on their promise of more power for the new year. Leading the charge of a new model line up is the brand new Defender UTV, a bold new direction for the American off-road brand.

Can Am have recently made headlines with their re-invention of the core of their model range - the renowned Rotax v-twin. Serious time and money has gone into the development of a new generation of engines to power the 2016 Can Am stable, building on the reputation of the original Rotax mill as a dependable high-torque, low maintenance unit. As with most new advances in auto engineering, the aim of Can Am’s tech wizards was to make gains in both fuel economy and power, while also keeping emissions - and maintenance downtime - to a minimum.

The first machine to reach our shores with this re-upped power plant is a new look for the brand as well. The Defender has many of the same properties as its namesake, the rugged, go-anywhere 4x4 built by the (in no way related) Land Rover company of Britain. Can Am have built the same utilitarian style and robust performance into a side-by-side workhorse for the farm.

‘Side-by-side’ may in fact be a misnomer, as the Defender actually seats three, with full safety belt support. Add to this crew capacity a tray which is big enough to grace a road-going ute, and you begin to see the appeal of this new offering. Can Am insist that work-day utility has been considered at every step of the way, from removable tool boxes slotted into the dash, through to optional side cages for the rear deck, and even molded indents to stop buckets sliding about. In terms of clever cubbys and compartments, the Defender rivals the bigger-on-the-inside tricks of a continental people-mover.

Unlike such a machine, the Defender is happy off the highway - and indeed off the road altogether, thanks to its knobbly tires, massive suspension travel, and that grunty new motor with barrels of low-down torque. All those Newton-metres come in low in the rev range, and hit the mud via a new transmission with a dedicated low-range ‘work’ setting as

well as heavy-duty CVT practicality. The new Rotax HD10 engine sits at the heart of this new model, but it’s the attention

to detail which will endear it to rural folks looking for a solid, dependable partner out in the field. ¢

Beginning a lavender adventureu by Ann Morgan

A visit to a lavender farm whilst on holiday sparked an idea for Belinda Gummer and Ray Dixon, and it wasn’t long before they were starting their own on their two-and-a-half acre Dargaville property

“We were thinking of options,” said Belinda.

“It isn’t big enough for livestock and we were trying to find options to bring in extra income. I have always loved lavender and when I saw the results people get with their farms I thought maybe we could do that too.

“We researched a lot and joined the New Zealand Lavender Association. Lavender is best grown from a cutting rather than a seed as then you know you are getting the distinctive properties of the original plant.

“They don’t like wet feet so we had to get the drainage correct and get a big digger in to make large mounds for the plants to grow in with wide trenches so they aren’t too close together.

Once lavender is established and if it is well looked after it can grow for up to 18 years.

“As I have Bindy Massage and Body Care I am hoping to use the oil and make products to make my

business a boutique. Lavender oil used in a diffuser is a great relaxant for stress. “We are in the beginning stages and have planted 600 plants to start with for oils and other uses such as opening the fields up for tourists and photographers. We have another block of 26 different plants specifically for culinary use.

“We have lived here for three years now. We moved from Whangarei when Ray got a job here.

“We are really excited with the initial stages of the project and are hoping to increase the lavender plants by 2,000 and adding more over the next few years.

“We want to utilise all our spare land for the opportunities lavender brings, including tourism.” ¢ p Belinda Gummer and Ray Dixon with the beginning of their lavender farm
