p Large crowds enjoyed the Whanaunga Touch Tournament at Kaiwaka Sports Complex on January 10. The inaugural event served as a fundraiser for Otamatea Marae. Twelve whanau teams vied for the chance to win the title and a prestigious trophy. Complex manager Cheryl Anderson wishes to thank the tournament sponsors, organisers, referees, stall holders and many volunteers who made this day possible.

Auckland visitor, Margaret Scott was fishing with a ‘keeper’ rig on a day out boating on the Kaipara Harbour, when a large bite led her to reel in. And instead of a nice snapper, which had taken her bait, there was a tiny sprat foul-hooked on the way up. “Oh well,” she said, “Don’t you Kaipara people need to re-bait your hooks when you’re out fishing?” We believe the ‘skipper’ on board just looked wise — and said nothing.

p The Baylys beach lifeguard patrol for this summer has now ended. Surf Lifesaving New Zealand urges beachgoers to keep safe, and to find the nearest lifeguard patrolled beach at the findabeach.co.nz website.

★ New films this week

The Imitation GameBased on the real life story of legendary

cryptanalyst Alan Turing, the film portrays the nail-biting race against time by Turing and his brilliant team of code-breakers at Britain’s top-secret Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park, during the darkest days of World War II.

Horrible Bosses 2Fed up with answering to higher-ups, Nick,

Dale and Kurt decide to become their own bosses by launching their own business. But a slick investor soon pulls the rug out from under them. Outplayed and desperate, and with no legal recourse, the three would-be entrepreneurs hatch a misguided plan to kidnap the investor’s adult son and ransom him to regain control of their company.

LockeLeaving the construction site on the eve of a

major project, construction manager Ivan Locke receives news that sends him driving the two hours from Birmingham to London, but even further from the life he once knew. Making the decision that he has to make, he then calls his wife, his sons, his co-workers and boss telling them the secret that he is bearing and trying to keep his job and family intact. But even more importantly, he will have to face himself and the choices he has made.

Big Hero 6A young team of misfits must rise to the

challenge and become heroes, with the help of one of the zaniest robotic champions ever built. Classic animated action for those who loved Planes, Toy Story or How to Train your Dragon.

BirdmanA tour-de-force performance from Michael

Keaton, as an actor struggling to break free of his typecast role of the past and engage with live theatre again. Birdman was a real 1960s cartoon hero, but this black comedy goes deeper than the comic book page.

Penguins of MadagscarThe wide-cracking wiseguys from the

Madagascar trilogy get their own time in the spotlight, as we learn how a quartet of resourceful birds went from Antarctica to the big time.

Into the WoodsA much anticipated, magical adventure

adapted from a best-selling Broadway musical. The Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales are woven into a tapestry of images and songs with the able assistance of an all star cast, including Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp.

Night at the Museum 3 The Secret of the Tomb is revealed as the

living displays from the Night at the Museum series travel to England, in a quest ot hang on to their magical lease on life. Family comedy with cavemen, cowboys, knights, dinosaurs and more!

Mr TurnerA historic, anarchic and candid look at artist

Joseph Turner - a living national treasure of Britain in the 1800s, a visionary but also a scoundrel to the core - a scandaliser of the aristocracy but a friend to royalty.

Local artist’s double winu by Ayla Miller

Dargaville artist Chris Hoult has secured a top commission after rising to prominence in 2014’s Gilmore Brown Art Awards — a showcase for local Kaipara talent.

O r i g i n a l l y a photographer, Chris Hoult began painting when he came across a piece of old corrugated iron around his property.

“Canvas is expensive, if you are just painting on old iron, there isn’t so much pressure.”

“There were so many great pieces of art at the Gilmore Brown awards, I thought mine would be a bit embarrassing, but I was really surprised to win third place,” he said.

“I framed it with a bit of old gate that was ruined when a tree fell on it during a storm earlier in the year, so it’s all recycled materials.”

Chris credits his inspiration to a photograph he captured during an afternoon walk he took with his partner and has subsequently named his winning painting ‘The Road North’.

Paid parking ‘penalises rural patients’u by Ayla Miller

Kaipara GreyPower members are concerned about the paid parking system in place at Whangarei Hospital.

Kaipara GreyPower president, June Klenner believes that the proposed new parking fees will severely disadvantage residents who live in rural areas.

“We think it is totally unfair. We can’t take a taxi or a bus like people in larger cities,” she says.

The Kaipara Community Health Trust provides a Health Shuttle to the hospital but when people are sent appointments that do not coincide with the times that the shuttle bus runs, they then must find someone to take them in a private car or take their own vehicle and pay to park during their hospital visit.

“To be hit with the cost of parking when we are already vulnerable is not fair,” June says and suggests that the Whangarei Hospital send rural patients a parking coupon along with their appointment letters.

She adds that people who live outside the area that the shuttle bus operates in will be disadvantaged.

Submission deadline loomingu by Joanne Speechly

Time is running out for Kaipara residents to make their voices heard regarding the possible replacement of two one-lane bridges near Matakohe.

The deadline for submissions is 3pm January 30 and local bridge campaigner Sue Reyland is urging people to make their voices heard.

“The bridge project has a good chance of being selected for funding but we need support. Submissions are very important and will add tremendous weight to the campaign.”

The SH12 Matakohe Bridges and road realignment project is one of nine proposed improvements identified in the Draft Regional Land Transport Plan 2015–2021.

At a public meeting in Dargaville last week, Northland Regional Transport Committee chair John Bain said the plan effectively sets the direction for transport in Northland for the next ten years and he encourages public feedback.

“The transport plan is used to bid for a share of the government’s funding pool for maintaining and improving roads. Not all projects can be included, which is why voicing your concerns is so important.” Sue says she was thrilled with how well the meeting went.

p Sue Reyland was pleased to see a good turnout at the public meeting in Dargaville

“I have personally put in a submission representing 2,000 people who signed a petition in support of this project. Northland MP Mike Sabin has been essential in helping to drive this project and he too urges Kaipara residents to make a submission.”

The single-lane Hardies and Anderson’s bridges were built in the 1930s and have not been altered since, despite repeated attempts by locals calling for action.

Submissions can be made to the NRC online, by email, post, phone or fax.

Regatta attracts a crowdPahi’s annual carnival, the long-running regatta weekend, has campsites “booked solid” says Pahi Beach Holiday Park manager, Julie Dry. “There’s really ‘no more room at the Inn.”

Always held on Anniversary Weekend, the event attracts par ticipants and spectators from Auckland to the Far North, and beyond.

“The campsites have been booked for months,” said Ms. Dry. “In fact it pretty much boils down to people re-booking for next year as they are leaving.”

The campers are a mixture of locals and visitors who take part, or just watch, plenty of harbour-side fun and games, as well as launch and powerboat races, kayaking contests and all manner of aquatic activities,

with the crowd swelled by day visitors. Top of the bill is always the bathtub races. There are also fun rides and activities for the youngsters, and a marquee hosting beauty contests and live music.

Boat races will begin at noon on Saturday with registrations from 10.30am onwards. There will be a hangi dinner at $10.00 per person, serving from 6pm. Entry into the tent will be at $10.00 per person with a live band.

On Sunday, the bathtub races start at 12 noon and the Miss Pahi contest in the marquee at 2.30pm. ¢

Chair of Commissioners

The Northland Regional Council is asking you to make a submission to its draft Regional Land Transport Plan. Representatives from the Regional Transport Committee held a meeting in Dargaville last week to raise awareness of its draft Regional Land Transport Plan. Submissions can be made online at www.nrc.govt.nz or by writing to the Northland Regional Council. The RTC is made up of representatives of the Northland Regional Council, NZ Transport Authority, and the three District Councils. Commissioner Peter Winder is Council’s representative on this Committee. The Committee is chaired and administered by the NRC.John Bain, Chair of the Northland Regional Transport Committee said that limited funding – both local and national – continues to be the biggest issue facing Northland’s land and he is quite correct. In the Kaipara around $47 of each $100 of the general rates revenue Council collects is spent on roading. The Plan takes a broad ten year view of Northland’s transport needs, but also focuses in greater detail on projects over the next six years (2015-2021). The plan is Northland’s collective bid for funding assistance from the National Land Transport Fund, administered by the New Zealand Transport Agency. There are three drivers for the Plan: economic development, resilience and safety.I would like to show why these three drivers are important to Kaipara.Resilience or rather a lack of it, was highlighted last winter when on two separate occasions, State Highway One had to be closed because the road had subsided. One closure happened just south of Kawakawa and the other on the southern side of the Brynderwyn Hills. It was chaos. Drivers had hours added on to their journeys over roads not built for high traffic volumes. In our case, traffic going south was redirected through Mangawhai, and traffic going north had to take the Paparoa-Oakleigh Rd or use SH12.

One of the projects in the 10-year transport plan to improve resilience of the network is work on the Paparoa-Oakleigh Rd including rehabilitation; slip repairs and strengthening for 50max trucksWe are totally reliant on our roads to move goods and services into and out of Kaipara and Northland. Two of our largest industries, dairying and logging, both use State Highway One, Twelve and Fourteen to get around. To get to the state highways, they travel on local roads. Fonterra’s tankers need to be able to get to factories at Kauri and Maungaturoto and logging trucks need to be able to get to Marsden Point. Our other local produce needs to efficiently get to markets in Auckland and overseas. We want roads strong enough to be able to be used by trucks without causing damage to the roads for other road users. Some of the projects included in the 10-year transport plan to support our economy are bridge strengthening and some road widening. Work to improve resilience is also important for our economy.Safety is something that everyone should be concerned with. Many locals have a strong view about the safety of having single lane bridges on State Highway 12 at Matakohe. I have heard many stories of near misses, of fog affecting visibility. There are other safety issues too such as narrow roads that make it stressful to drive past trucks. The main project included in the 10-year transport plan to improve our safety is the replacement of the one-way bridges at Matakohe into two-lane bridges with improved approaches.I encourage you to log on to the Northland Regional Council website or to write to the Northland Regional Council with your submission. Our roads and what happens to them over the next 10 years is important to all of us. Please provide the Northland Regional Council with your feedback on what you think the priorities should be.

Dargaville’s main street has become a little more famous with overseas visitors this summer season, with net-based travel advice site Tripadvisor boosting the riverside town’s Raan A Haan Thai Aroi Dee restaurant into a stellar spot.

Tripadvisor is a hot go-to source for travellers, using the votes and reviews of those who have gone before to point out must-see destinations, good places to stay, and top places to dine. With the summer influx of tourists has also come a flood of good reviews for the popular new Thai eatery, only in its second year of business but already turning up the heat. You can check out Tripadvisor’s top tips and best dining right here — www.tripadvisor.co.nz.

The praises of those tourists — many of them globetrotters who have come from halfway around the world — speaks volumes. Raan A Haan Thai Aroi Dee has scored top spot in the Kaipara district against a strong field of contenders, placing among the highest tier in the North Island, and 64th in the top 100. Many of the top spots in that 100 have gone to internationally famous chefs — and even in our local

vicinity owners Don and Rose are part of a fine culinary tradition spanning many different cultural flavours.

The Tripadvisor accolade is a good thing for the whole town, in the opinion of these busy restaurateurs. When hungry travellers go that little bit out of their way to taste a heartily recommended meal in Dargaville, they are sure to take note of all the other attractions on offer in this corner of the country. ¢

A statement from the Auditor General’s office stated that the council decision on legal action meant the matter was in the hands of the department’s insurers.

Last year, Ms Provost had cited the former Kaipara District Council decision to expand the Mangawhai project to $57.8 million as ‘inappropriate’.

The KDC chair of commissioners, John Robertson said at that time that the former chief executive should be held to account for his role in the previous elected council’s failure to assess and set rates legally, to ensure

a number of statutory requirements were met and its failure to manage its finances prudently.

“Elected members and the Kaipara community should have been able to rely on the chief executive’s advice. But in a number of areas it was very poor. Mr McKerchar should be held to account for his role in those failings.”

We’ve had a busy start to the year with numerous crews working on multiple jobs around Kaipara and Whangarei Districts. The Whakapara to Helena Bay 33kV insulated express line is underway until early February, where two crews are attending to maintenance.A two week job at Pipiwai will see maintenance completed on 11kV and 400 volt lines, while similarly, in Mangakahia Valley, an 11kV maintenance job is in motion. The major feeder rehabilitation project in the main street of Dargaville continues with additional crews from Whangarei in place. Night work will begin in early February and it is hoped the job will be completed by early March. The entirety of the job will see a big difference to the security of electricity supply.Elsewhere in Kaipara, a conductor replacement project and 11kV maintenance is happening at Tokatoka and Mititai. In Maungaturoto an underground job is being completed at a commercial development.Underground work involving pillar changing is also being carried out in Tutukaka and Matapouri. Further underground electricity work is being completed at subdivisions in Maungatapere and Tikipunga. In February, multiple re-conductoring projects (including 11kV maintenance) in rural areas which are often inaccessible in winter will be started. Waiotira, Mititai, Babylon Coast, and the area from Hikurangi to Hukerunui will be among the areas covered.

Busy start to year

Library hosts local poetu by Ann Morgan

Maureens Sudlow’s love of writing is presented in her newly published book ‘Antipodes’.

The Dargaville library hosted an intimate morning with Maureen reading from her newly published selection of poetry. The opportunity gave her listeners the experience to hear and feel with conviction the writings from the author herself on a personal level.

“When we have the opportunity to host our local authors and celebrate their writing I like the library to be involved,” said library manager Lisa Salter.

“It is my first poetry book,” said Maureen. “I write poetry in the Japanese style Haiku, which is short, as it has more impact rather than being long and boring and I love the tension between the lines of Haiku. With some long poems you can feel quite dumb at times trying to read them. Most of my poetry does not rhyme, it doesn’t need to.

“Not all my poems were originally written with a book in mind, some are from years of writing. I love to write and

poetry is easy.” Her poem, ‘Dying among friends’ was created not long after she moved to Dargaville where she witnessed the strength of friendship between three men and a man in hospice care where she then worked. “The friendship these men had really hit me, it was so strong,” said Maureen.

“The photos I included make the book more interesting. The pigeon on the front cover lives at our house, we have a pair and they sit on the deck and watch to see where we are before they go and collect the nikau berries.”

A member of the New Zealand authors association, Maureen has lived in most parts of New Zealand, preferring small towns, enjoying the peace and slower pace of the countryside. She loves to read ‘anything and everything’. “My next project will most likely be

p Maureen signing at the library

another children’s book,” says Maureen. “Fearless Fred is the first book I published, a story about a small boy with a great imagination.”

Antipodes is available at Muddy Waters gallery or at the Dargaville and Kauri Coast information centre. ¢

Camp a positive experience u by Ann Morgan

Attending the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuit camp was an opportunity to think about the future for a young Dargaville student.

The Dargaville Youth Charitable Trust sponsored 16-year-old Dargaville High School student John Amoore to attend a recent Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre Student Leadership Challenge Programme.

John said he attended with the view of helping underprivileged youth in the future himself.

“Attending my first camp and hearing the talks on situations other young people go through in life is what made me realise there are always others worse off than yourself and it made me very aware of the need to get support.

“I want to learn and better myself for the future so I can influence and help the underprivileged youth of our community in a positive way through outdoor experiences,” said John.

The camp included teambuilding and problem solving, a high rope course, abseiling and rock climbing as well as leadership training.

“We had to solve situations like how to get our groups across a boggy marsh with posts. We tramped up

p John with his certificate of accomplishment

Mt Ruapehu nearly to the summit and we went caving which was what I found the most challenging as I am very claustrophobic.

“In all the experiences we faced we had to support each other realising that at some stage throughout each day you needed the help of someone else on

your team to accomplish a task. All decisions on each activity were made by the group as a whole which increased our communication skills.

“In the future I plan to get my certificate as an instructor in certain outdoor activity fields as this will allow me to help other young people.” ¢

Kaipara’s Best Practice accreditedaward winning team. Covering the Kaipara.

Five good reasons to shop locally

1. Every dollar you spend locally goes the extra mile

Your dollar goes to a local retailer — who pays local staff — who buy local produce — from a farmer who uses local services… when money stays in the district, its impact is MULTIPLIED. Spend out of town, and your dollar disappears.2. Local businesses employ your friends and neighbours

Millions of retail dollars go from the Kaipara to Whangarei and Auckland each year. How many more jobs would be created if those millions stayed here in our region? When those people are employed, their buying power increases.

3. Local Businesses provide local support

If you’ve bought something technical, and need after sales service, it makes sense to go to the folks just down the road — not a hour or more away by car. For advice, add-ons and repairs, your locals are more convenient. 4. Strong local businesses support charitable and community groups here

It’s business owners who clubs such as your local junior rugby team, netball team and scouts turn to for assistance. Ambulance and fire crews, charities like Rotary and the Lions,

even help for people who are ill and need specialist treatment — all receive money from generous local business leaders. Spending local means more generosity when it’s time to help our own.5. A prosperous town centre is a beautiful town centre

When business grows, shops are full, shop owners have more money to spend on beautification projects, window displays get more vibrant, and there’s extra time and money to think about making the main street as a whole more appealing for tourists and visitors. ¢

Mainstreet goes onlineu by Andy Bryenton

Dargaville’s main street is about to make the jump into cyberspace, with a group of retailers banding together and taking the initiative to launch a Facebook page this week.

The town already has a popular Facebook page in a social context, but this new site aims to showcase the main street as never before, featuring specials, new products, and knockout

deals. The aim of the page is to present the main street as a better alternative to shopping out of town, as everything a customer could need is right within walking distance.

Dargaville main street retailers agree wholeheartedly with the list of top reasons to shop locally, and those involved with this new online initiative are dedicated to making the town’s ‘CBD’ the first choice for Kaipara folks seeking a shopping destination.

Check out the new page, and don’t forget to sign up as a friend. There are big plans in the works for this Facebook portal, including the potential for exclusive specials and giveaways for members. www.facebook.com/dargavillemainstreet. ¢

Best business practice guaranteed u by Andy Bryenton

Sometimes in business it’s good to get a view from another perspective, especially when it comes to affirming a commitment to great service.

Just as this publication is audited to ensure wide distribution to a large readership, other businesses take steps to ensure that they are doing all they can for their customers.

In a small town like Dargaville, this is even more important, as reputation is the cornerstone of business success.

That’s why our local First National real estate office, Roper and Jones, are pleased to be part of First National’s Australasia wide best practice programme.

As a big part of our main street, the Roper and Jones team are passionate about offering a better service to their customers, whether they are investing in property, finding a new home here in the Kaipara, establishing a business or entrusting their assets for sale.

Roper and Jones’ Jill Wilson is even more pleased that her team have passed the rigorous test with flying colours, receiving a best practice accreditation which guarantees the professionalism and high standards of the entire staff.

This accreditation covers all aspects of the business, including everything from friendly customer service through to ongoing training and industry knowledge.

Accreditation builds on the foundation of knowledge, transparent procedures

and meticulous systems which are needed in the world of modern real estate — and it serves as a ‘bill of good health’ for the company.

With a swag of awards in the trophy cabinet, including a Top Rural Salesperson award and a Top Exclusive Lister award, along with a Top Rural Office award shared between Maungaturoto and Dargaville, Roper and Jones have ended 2014 on a high note, and now head into an optimistic 2015 with their new accreditation confirmed. ¢

New name at the top for 2015u by Andy Bryenton

The public have voted with their feet on the gas pedal, acclaiming a new king in the world of light commercial vehicles.

other temptations that will be hard to ignore. Already the first of the new Falcon XR6 models has landed, with the highly anticipated final version of the XR8 muscle car to follow, along with a new version of the best-selling Focus. The new Mondeo is making waves overseas, shattering the mold of the mid-sized executive car. And later in the year we’ll see not only the Everest SUV, based on the Ranger platform, but also the undisputed ace in the pack, the new Mustang.

The Everest in particular is piquing curiosity — if only because the Ranger underpinnings it will boast have been so well received by Kiwi farmers, foresters and more. With a proven platform to build on, expectations are high for this new SUV to take the country by storm.

With Toyota’s Land Cruiser firmly ensconced as the big name in the large,

over-seven-seat 4x4 arena, Ford will be hoping for a repeat of the Ranger’s performance in toppling the Hilux from its position. Initial design sketches and concepts point toward a vehicle of similar size and space to the Range Rover or Land Rover Discovery, sitting above the Kuga in the Ford spectrum.

It’s been a long time coming, but this changing of the guard at the top of the Kiwi ute game has come at a crucial time for Ford. With so many new models set to build upon the success of their flagship light commercial, it’s a fair bet that old Henry would be proud of the blue oval’s current direction.

Indeed, there is no way that Ford’s founder could not take heart at the way his eponymous corporation is weathering the winds of change over a century since the Model T brought motoring to the masses. ¢

For the first time in decades the evergreen Toyota Hilux has been bumped from the top spot, making way for the award-laden Ford Ranger ute.

“It’s a fantastic result for the Ford Ranger and we’d firstly like to thank all of our Ranger customers and our dealers throughout New Zealand for their support,” said Corey Holter, Managing Director of Ford New Zealand.

“A lot of attention was put on the sales race this year but we’ve always said it’s about the customer and leaving it up to them to decide. Well, the customer has decided and there is a new number one in New Zealand. We are very proud of the Ford Ranger.”

With a swag of industry awards under its belt, the Ranger heads into its fourth year ahead of the pack. A staggering 6345 Rangers hit the road last year,

with over 70 of those driving off the forecourt of our own local dealership, Dargaville Ford, where owner Lindsay West agrees wholeheartedly with Corey Holter’s sentiments.

Lindsay says that with a top vehicle like the Ranger on his forecourt, and a top team backing it up, 2015 will be another landmark year for his business, and the Ford name in general.

And while customers — such as those who attended Dargaville Ford’s Ranger Re-union evening — are quick to praise the power, comfort and durability of the Ranger, the Ford roll-call for the coming year holds a few

On the road with a Kiwi legendu by Andy Bryenton

The Mk 2 Morris Minor may have been born in England in 1952, but it’s been claimed as a classic icon of Kiwiana.

The vintage shape and distinctive sound of the little ‘Morrie’ are imprinted on a nation’s memory, with many a story to tell. And while the last of the Minors rolled off a New Zealand assembly line long ago, there are still immaculately restored examples of what Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson jokingly referred to as ‘Britain’s Volkswagon Beetle’ on the road.

Now Ruawai Four Square owner Naresh Ranchod has one of his own — a replica of the famous Four Square delivery vans which plied the rural roads of mid-20th-century New Zealand. Most country folks of a certain vintage will remember the grocer’s van, which was

in many cases an exact likeness of the 1971 Morris now gracing the Ruawai Four Square’s forecourt. United with that other great Kiwi icon, ‘Cheeky Charlie’, the little van is a community effort, with local auto painters, mechanics and general good sorts pitching in to get it back on its wheels.

The restoration has taken just over a year, and involved a complete strip-down to bare steel and parts. Now, with the acclaim of Four Square’s Group Manager and a successful debut in the Ruawai Christmas Parade, the little Morris is set for some minor final tweaks, a re-VIN, and a future as a working delivery van once more. ¢

Pre-war firepower on wheels

This imposing specimen is the all-time track record holder at England’s Brooklands circuit — despite being built over 75 years ago. The Napier-Railton special packs a 24 litre W12 Napier aircraft engine into a lightweight roadster frame, and was commissioned in 1933 to smash the world speed record.

Needless to say, this British bombshell did so in style, and remains the fastest car around the Brooklands track. Not thanks to superior pre-war

muscle, however- due to the conversion of Brooklands from an autodrome to an aerodrome during the 1940s. The Napier-Railton still lives at Brooklands as a working museum exhibit, though test pilots would have to cover a hefty insurance bill — not to mention the fuel — if they wanted to relive former glories in this leaf-sprung, three-speed, 270km/h monster.

To save weight, the daring inventors of the special included only rear wheel brakes. ¢

At NorthTec you can study full time, or take on some part-time education while you work. You can sign up for a degree, or go back to basics for a free foundation course giving you the skills to take your studies further.

With campuses and learning centres around the region, from Coatesville to Kaitaia, you can choose to study in Northland and get a top-class education close to home.

If you want to study but aren’t sure what path to take, you can drop into NorthTec’s new pop-up shop in Whangarei’s Strand Arcade. At 15 Strand Arcade, next to Bethell’s Uniforms, the shop will be open from Monday, 26

January through to Saturday, 14 February (opens 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday, and 9am to 12pm on Saturdays).

There, NorthTec staff will be on hand to talk you through your options, give you advice and information, and take your details to start the enrolment process.

NorthTec is Northland’s largest tertiary provider, and programmes cover everything from automotive studies and business management to hospitality and nursing. If you’re looking for a course to suit a rural lifestyle or career

path, you can choose from forestry, agriculture, horticulture, conservation and sustainable rural development. There’s also a health and safety course to give you essential knowledge required by the industry.

If trades are more your thing, we have a purpose-built Future Trades centre in Whangarei, where our tutors are ready to pass on their knowledge and help you build connections to local industry. NorthTec also teaches construction and painting at a variety of locations which may be closer to home for you.

Maybe you’re more interested in the arts? NorthTec is well known for its arts programmes, including Maori arts, and holds regular shows and exhibitions at our on-campus galleries. Our brand new Bachelor of Maori Art — Maunga Kura Toi, begins in March 2015 and will be delivered in both Whangarei and Kaikohe.

Counting the costsHard on the heels of Christmas and holidays, back to school can be an exciting time, but costs can also bring stress and strain on the family budget.

Enrolment fees, uniforms, transport, stationery, school bags, even provision of lunches — it all adds up.

Budget advisors are well aware that some families may find it difficult to avoid tension at this time, and good advice is to make back-to-school preparations fun and get the family to get involved with a fun atmosphere so that budgeting and saving is an enjoyable activity.

It also creates an awareness of the costs associated with everyday items among children and contributes towards a sense of responsibility.

In fact, organisation is key, and writing lists is a great way to identify costs and by being organised before you head off to Warehouse Stationery, or other outlets, you’re less likely to fall into the overspending trap.

Make sure you have your list of the new school year needs. Identify the most important requirements — what is needed now, and what perhaps can be postponed until later in the year — for instance, sporting clothing and equipment might wait until the winter season comes around. Another good

tip is to make an inventory of what is already in the family.

Perhaps an older sibling can pass on books or other items that may serve a ‘second term’ rather than being bought new. Check around — there might be pens and pads around the house that can go in the schoolbag.

The cost of education cannot be taken lightly in New Zealand households, with a survey at the beginning of the last school year showing ‘free’ state education will cost the average parent nearly $35,000 by the time their child finishes secondary school.

ASG Education Programs surveyed 1,000 parents and the not-for-profit organisation’s projections showed Kiwi parents would pay about $16,000 for a child starting their eight-year primary school state education at the beginning of 2014 and that more than $18,000 would be needed for the same child’s secondary school years.

“In the past we have always convinced ourselves that a government education is a free education,” ASG chief executive John Velegrinis said at that time. ¢

New Mangawhai fire station on its wayu by Colin Patterson

Mangawhai is set to get a new fire station, although the New Zealand Fire Service is unwilling to say when it will open.

For a number of years Mangawhai’s volunteer brigade has operated from premises in Wood St, but area commander Mike Lister says the building is a safety hazard.

“It’s falling down — it’s dangerous. It’s unable to be occupied.”

While fire engines are still be stationed on the ground floor, ‘upstairs

is unusable’. Mr Lister says the fire service has provided a portacom building at the rear of the existing station. But he concedes conditions are less than ideal.

The fire service approached the council seeking a licence to occupy on Mangawhai Community Park, next to the St John ambulance station which is currently being built. After the proposal was put out for public consultation, the council received 27 submissions — all in support.

Last Tuesday council commissioners unan imous ly accepted a recommendation to approve the granting of a licence to occupy.

“We’ve now got the OK,” says Mr Lister. “We’ll now have to negotiate with council over the conditions of the lease. We can start building very quickly once we finalise the lease.”

Mr Lister is reluctant to say how long the process will take or when Mangawhai can expect to see its new station. But he says the new station

will benefit the community. “We’re catering for the growth of Mangawhai. And the new station will have better access. ¢
