Detailed summary of main events:

Stephen Kumalo goes to Claremont to find his sister and her child. He finds herat her home and tells her that he is taking her and her son home. He tells mismanguthat they need some help to get her stuff and to take them back to the mission.

Chapter 7

Stephen buys Gertrude and her son clothes and then he leaves with Msimanguto go find his brother. He finds him at his store and he asks why he has stopped

writing and he tells him that life is different here. John Kumalo says that he does nolonger go to church because he believes that they are hypocrites. John Kumalo tellsStephen where both of their sons are working so that he can find them. They went tothe factory but they discovered that he was not there. A workman though did knowthat he had left to live with Mrs. Ndela. When they arrived at her house they weretold that he had already left and was living in Alexandra.

Stephen discovered thatthe little girl was his granddaughter and he wanted to help her, but Msimangu saidthat he could not help her so they just left. Afterwards Father Vincent shows them a newspaper about how a young mannamed Arthur Jarvis was killed with a gun shot by what appears to be natives.Kumalo becomes very sad and very afraid.

came looking for Kumalos son. Msimangu tells Kumalo and then they go through allthe same people that his son stayed with and asked them if the police had beenthere and they all said yes. They eventually go to where there is the little girl wherehis son was last staying at and the police had already been there but no one knowswhy they were there. They only know that they are looking for Kumalos son.Afterwards they leave to go back to the Mission.

Chapter 13

Detailed summary of main events:

Kumalo and Msimangu both go to Ezenzeleni and Kumalo ponders all the thingsthat have happened since he has gotten to Johannesburg. He learns to accept it andto make the best of it and thinks how it has made him more humble. Kumalobecomes depressed about the things that have happed to him the more he thinksabout them. He decides that the only things that he has found since coming here isfear and pain. The next day Kumalo listens to Msimangu preach and is becomeshappy.

Stephen Kumalo discovers that it was his son who killed Arthur Jarvis, and thathis brothers son was there too. Msimangu takes him to John Kumalo and Stephentells him what happened. After that they all go to the prison where their sons arebeing held. Stephen sees his son and asks him why he had done all the things that hehad done, but he cannot answer him. Stephen becomes sad that his son does notlove him as much as he loves him. When their time is up Stephen leaves the prison

Detailed summary of main events:

Stephen Kumalo and the man from the reformatory look for a lawyer. FatherVincent prays for them and helps them in their endeavors. Kumalo becomesdepressed about what has happened and he talks about how if only he had knownwhat was happening sooner. He says that other people knew but it did not matter tothem. Kumalo talks about how his son seems to have no regret and does not careabout what he has done. Father Vincent tells him to pray and rest.

Chapter 17

Detailed summary of main events:

Kumalo asks Mrs. Lithebe if his sons soon to be wife can come and stay withthem for a little while. Then Kumalo becomes happy when she says yes and he playswith his sisters son. The girl comes to their house and is very happy. Gertrude lefther alone for she saw that she was truly a child. Stephens son comes to his houseand Stephen tells him about how he has a friend who can arrange the marriage forhim. Absalom writes to his mother about all that has happened. Mr. Carmichael

comes and tells them that he will take their case as a lawyer. They discuss what theywill do to persuade the court that he should get a lesser sentence. The lawyer wastaking the case for God.
