Its roots are humble: a single Volkswagen dealership with just 13 employees, H.J. Pfaff Motors goal was to provide the best customer service experience in the industry. !The company expanded rapidly but organically by acquiring Porsche in 1966 and Audi in 1971. Since Christopher Pfaff assumed control of the company from his father in 1986, the group has expanded from the single dealership in Newmarket to 13 business units across Canada including Volkswagen, Porsche, Audi, Toyota, McLaren, Pagani, BMW, Pfaff Autoworks (bodyshop), Pfaff Leasing, and Pfaff Tuning. !Designated one of Canadas best-managed companies five years running, Pfaff and its 500-plus employees are united by a passion for delivering exceptional automotive experiencesfrom sales to service to track days and even automotive travel programsand is as alive today as it was in 1964. !This commitment to individualized, class-leading service is something Pfaff shares with Kettlebeck. Both companies strive to provide clients and their families with complete satisfaction, treating customers like family and ensuring their vehicle or home is exactly right for their needs. !Kettlebeck has always approached its projects cognizant of how human the process of homebuying is. Far too many GTA builders have an expedited process where youre rushed into signing and are allowed a fixed number of decor appointments. As a boutique builder, Kettlebeck takes the time to get to know you and to learn how they can build your home exactly the way you want. !Indeed, like the communities that Kettlebeck develops, the vehicles and experiences that Pfaff delivers are the opposite of cookie cutter. Indeed, highly-customized vehicles, particularly from its Audi, Porsche, McLaren, and Pfaff Tuning divisions, are something of a Pfaff signature. !Both Pfaff and Kettlebeck understand that every individual, homeowner, or driver is unique and Pfaff builds some of the most unique vehicles on the Canadian market. In addition to selling highly exclusive brands, Pfaff has even created its own limited editions in cooperation with Audi and Porsche to celebrate the companys 50th anniversary. !Pfaff has always known it serves two communities: the community of car enthusiasts, as well as the customers and friends in the neighbourhoods in which it operates. With its roots in the Aurora-Newmarket area, the companys ties in the local community are particularly strong, and its two area dealerships Pfaff Volkswagen and H.J. Pfaff Audi as well as its corporate head office have a major presence in the community. Perhaps most notable is its involvement with the Southlake Foundation, where Chris Pfaff and Pfaff Automotive Partners made a leadership donation to the hospitals Images for Life Campaign, which recently met its goal of raising $16 million towards bringing a second MRI to the region.

!Founded in 1964 by Hans J. Pfaff, the company has grown from a small, family-run dealership in Newmarket, Ontario into a leading luxury automotive dealer group spanning the entire country. Over the last 50 years, Pfaff has become known for its commitment to creating superior customer experiences at every price point, and with every vehicle it sells.

I care as much about the composition of the page

which illustrates my building as I do about the building

being portrayed. ALLAN STONE IS FOUNDING PARTNER

    OF SMV ARCHITECTS.

  • !In a career teeming with vitality and style that has spanned decades, Allan Stone has cemented himself as a force to be reckoned with throughout the world of architecture. Kettlebecks latest mid rise development, Abelie Condos in Aurora, is a further entrenchment of the creativity and capacity for innovation that Allan so prides himself in. Never succumbing to a particular stereotype or creating jaded work, Allan has managed to retain an originality in all of his designs that has carried him through the different eras of architectural style to the present day. Inherent in the world of architecture, and rarely more prevalent than in Allans work, is the idea that design is key.

To Allan, the architects job is not to simply create a building, but to create an opportunity to inform and delight those who will come into contact with his or her creation. Style is integral to all of the buildings that Allan has designed, but that style has to remain within the context of where it is created: a reflection of the users and the times.

Look around at the homogenous, bland world we occupy. Allan believes that every building should have its own inexorable sense of style and personal identity. What this means is that there is no textbook definition of what a good building looks like, but that instead each architect can bring his or her own solutionhis or her own fingerprintto the project. This philosophy is at the heart of all of Allans work and is what laid the foundation for SMV Architects, which Allan is a founding partner of. Allan received his education in architecture at the University of Toronto and upon receiving his degree, he set about creating a distinguished name for himself within the community. Working on projects across the residential, commercial, and institutional sectors, Allan commands a mighty presence in his field.

I DON'T BELIEVE MY WORK HAS A STYLE

Drawing profound inspiration from the brilliant Frank Lloyd Wright and the famous Fallingwater of Pennsylvania, USA, Allan looks to what he calls the one-of-a-kind designers to embolden his stance on individuality within architecture. A refreshing trait of Allan and his work is that he does not fall into any ism and refuses to so categorize himself: I dont believe my work has a style. Intrinsic in this is the problem of being constantly original, something incredibly difficult, yet Allan has always been adamant on creating original spaces.

This staunch opposition to a cookie-cutter type of architecture has made Allans job exponentially more difficult over the years, but the inverse effect is that it has allowed for a far more intellectually and creatively fulfilling career. Most importantly, it has ensured the creation of phenomenal buildings. Allans work on Kettlebecks Abelie Condos was about creating not simply a place of residence, but instead a backdrop for the residents lives. Allan aimed to develop a place that facilitates and stores memories, and with this in my mind, Allans style has greatly benefited Kettlebecks project. Abelies unique countenance is a reflection of the values that coalesced and worked together to create a unique experience for Kettlebecks homebuyers.

Despite bringing the same sensibility to all of his projects, Allans approach to how he promotes good design has evolved. He recalls when he was a young architect: I felt it was my duty to get up on a soap box and preach to the world about the importance of good design. I later discovered that the best way to raise consciousness was at the rate of one person at a time Allans methodical and meaningful approach encapsulates Kettlebecks approach to new homes.

  • !I think what's most interesting is that we can do interdisciplinary design work at a residential development firm and let that colour the

homes we build. SAAD SIDDIQUI IS MARKETING

    DIRECTOR AT KETTLEBECK.

  • !Its with this in mind that Kettlebecks Marketing Director, Saad Siddiqui, has set about branding new communities that people can connect to. As the nucleus between Kettlebecks multidisciplinary approach to new homes and homebuyers, Saad has taken great pride in reemphasizing design as a central idea in new-home construction.

A lot of people may think my job is to be clever. Despite the reputation marketers have earned for being deceptive and cunning, I think my work is much more than that, Saad notes. New homes are an interesting product to advertise, because although there's an unmistakably material aspect to them, a lot of what we try to sell people is immaterial. A home becomes a fixturea backdrop against which we share so many experiences.

Saads creative background has more than equipped him to articulate these experiences in relevant and meaningful ways to Kettlebeck's homebuyers. After attending the New York Film Academy at Universal Studios in Los Angeles, Saad developed a love for visual storytelling. His short films have been critically acclaimed for their unique insights and originality.

Saad credits much of Kettlebecks aesthetics to his research at Stanford University, where he explored the nexus of philosophy and literature, focusing on aestheticism and stylization. His diverse range of artistic and intellectual experiences have been profoundly influential in the way he views the design obligation in good advertising. Saad has successfully steered Kettlebecks branding into a more developed art form, stylistically drawing on Coco Chanels sleek elegance and minimalism combined with the distinctiveness of a Saul Bass design.

With this interdisciplinary design approach, Saad has continued to push beyond the insufferable monotony of new-home-development

advertising. Kettlebecks many touch points, including this publication, are the byproducts of this kind of approach.

We project sincerely human experiences that people will share in their new homes. If you think about it, helping people see the place that will be home to so many important moments in their lives is actually a very personal thing were meddling with. This sensitivity has been the guiding principle Saad has employed at Kettlebeck. In a somewhat defiant stance against industry norms, Saad has made sure that Kettlebecks projects arent earmarked with any of those nonsense buzzwords.

I always have a good laugh when I see condo developments being branded as luxe soho chic in Chinatown. In many respects, the design approach is humbler at Kettlebeck. Its about quiet quality where form and function work together.

In the constantly evolving design world, Saad confessed his fear that its very easy to be pushed into obsoletion that can drive you mad. But instead of seeing futility in this fact, he finds profound inspiration and motivation in it. When under the pressure of constant change, there is a need to innovate and adapt, and thats what good design is about. At the end of his work on Abelie Condos in Aurora, Saads creative direction has produced a brand that is just as unique itself as it is representative of the context. If a development will truly represent and eventually grow within its context, it has to work within the grander scheme of things. You don't build communities by throwing around meaningless phrases like sophisticated tranquilitywhatever that means.

are among the influences that Melissa Andre, Creative Director of Melissa Andre Events, draws on in her event planning work. Melissa designs spectacular celebrations for her clients across the globe, including the likes of Toronto-born rapper Drake and MLB hall-of-famer Roberto Alomar. She applies the whimsical and magical zest of her imagination to every facet of her work, creating events that simply cant otherwise be imagined.

Melissa has always been an incredibly creative and exuberant individual: I get to create magic for just one night, and the very next night, I can explore a completely different type of look, feel, and mystique. Melissas variety in influences has given her the opportunity to let her work breathe and take on a life of its own. Articulating her designs poetically across different contexts and in completely different genres, Melissa possesses a style that can be defined, singularly, as one that takes big creative leaps. Her experimentation with atypical themes, motifs, and looks has distinguished her work as energetic and exciting, both unmistakable trademarks of Melissa Andre Events.

Despite focusing largely on high-end weddings, Melissa often foraysvery successfullyinto other realms of event planning, which was exemplified by the opening of Kettlebecks Brick&Oak site in the Niagara region: an elegant, inviting, and community-centred country fair with food trucks and entertainment. No matter what type of event shes planning, Melissa brings a certain freshness to all of her work: I think events should feel really fresh and airy. I try to give all of my designs a sort of lightness. As one of the industrys most recognized planners, Melissa is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to event planning, with much of her prowess coming from her naturally fun and jovial personality. She rejects the idea that all formal events have to be boring: For some strange reason, formal has at times become a synonym for

stuffy. To alleviate this stuffiness, Melissa makes sure that all of her events are teeming with the fine details that always make the difference. The level of thought and detail that goes into her designs is extensive, and as such, ensures a thrilling yet deeply personal experience for her clients and their guests.

Despite planning spectacular events for nearly a decade, Melissa continues to create unique and innovative celebrations. Her firm is constantly picking up bigger, more ambitious, and certainly more fabulous projects. Although such complex and intricate celebrations are, as one can imagine, logistically intensive, Melissa has honed a process that allows her to produce events that not only captivate guests emotions but also unfold seamlessly.

The time spent on details can be extensive, but as Melissa recounts, well worth it: We once installed these 16-foot-tall weeping willow-like trees with hanging pieces of amber-coloured crystal teardrops from the branches. I shuffled the positioning of those trees a dozen times on the day. An unflinching determination and never-ending imagination guide Melissa through these gruelling moments of event design and production. Most importantly, though, Melissa is grateful for her instinct about the best way to take some of these concepts from a sketch to reality.

With Kettlebecks design emphasis, Melissas approach to celebration was the right fit for the Kettlebeck family. Buying a home, in many ways, is the first push towards pursuing your dream. Such a momentous milestone deserves the fantastic celebration that Melissas firm provided Kettlebeck at Brick&Oak I really do think celebrating is so important. I design parties for people who love to dream.

INTERIOR DEISGN IS IN THE FAMILY GENES

Interior designers are tasked with a uniquely difficult jobtheyre neither involved in designing the structural components nor developing the site. In a somewhat entangled position, theyre often left making the most important aesthetic and visually apparent decisions with the least flexibility. Few designers are as cognizant and in control of this challenge as is mother-daughter design duo Gordana and Dora Car. Kettlebeck has entrusted its interior design work to their family-run business Gordana Car Design, which has been making an impressive name for itself for almost two decades.

Gordana received her Bachelors degree in architecture, whereas Dora focused her education on interior design. The interdisciplinary well-roundedness that comes from their extensive training allows them to create incredibly well thought-out and, in principle, architecturally driven spaces.

Unique to their practice is a familial bond that underscores all of their work. They both agree that their close relationship creates a much more open and comfortable working environment: The fact that we are a mother and daughter team means that we can really express to each other exactly how we feel about the design without any reservations. This openness creates room for a level of creativity and innovation that would perhaps otherwise be constrained by professional reservedness. Together, they bring two distinctly timeless styles together in concert: one classic and appreciative of architectural details and the other more progressive and drawn to minimalism. This synthesis of styles and influences forges a recognizable name for Gordana and Dora.

Gordana and Dora both find a truly invigorating sense of creative fulfillment in their work and always involve themselves completely to the nth degree of detail in every given project. Surrounded by great design day in and day out, they both concede the old truism about doing what you love. Because they are passionate about design, [they] live and breathe design. Their passion has garnered them much respect within the developer and new-home builder community, not to mention in the homes that thousands of people across the Greater Toronto Area now enjoy.

All of their efforts continue to pay off as they strive to fashion their own iconic mark: We are aiming to create the perfect balance and a truly unique style that clients can attribute distinctively to Gordana Car Design. Creating impressive designs that are teeming with youthful exuberance is not a task easily accomplished, but this duo has proven that there is no hurdle too big for them to overcome. Some would find the prospect of working with a family member daunting, yet Gordana and Dora have turned it into their greatest strength: We mix together our totally different yet vibrant imaginations and come up with something that expresses a little part of each of our personal styles.

Gordana and Dora have left an indelible mark on every project they have graced, and their work with Kettlebeck is no exception. The unique, well-rounded, and instantly iconic look that is intrinsically tied to Gordana Car Design has helped shape Kettlebecks Abelie Condos in Aurora into a timeless and beautiful landmark.

ERMIE TADDEO IS A SALES REPRESENTATIVE AT KETTLEBECK.

  • ERMIE TADDEO

    www.kettlebeckdevelopments.com | k MAGAZINE | 23

When marketers map out sales processes, they tend to view each interaction the client has with the brand as a touchpoint. At Kettlebeck, perhaps the most meaningful and certainly most profound touchpoints are its peoplenamely, its salespeople.

Developers seldom place as much emphasis on their search for salespeople as they do on other facets of their project, but at Kettlebeck, the quality of human interaction must be calibrated. In fact, for the longevity of the business, the art of selling homes becomes just as prudent as the science of building them. It is rare in this industry that home sales are approached as passionately and personally as they are by Ermie Taddeo at Kettlebecks latest Brick&Oak multi-residential project in Thorold, Ontario.

With over eighteen years of experience and an unmatched level of enthusiasm, Ermie was the perfect fit for Kettlebeck. Her strong track record and years of sustained success have made her a highly esteemed and revered figure in the real estate industry. She attributes this success to a basic yet fundamentally different philosophy from that held by many others. Ermie chooses to view clients not as transactions but as actual people who have entrusted her in helping them make one of the most important decisions of their lives. Ermie values the individual connections that she can make with her home buyers and maintains a great rapport with all of her clients.

By approaching the sales of Brick&Oak homes as an effort to build a community, Ermie is at the forefront of building the intangible and distinctly human facet of that community. To her, the satisfaction from her work is very simply the joy she gets in creating a clients personalized dream home.

A recent addition to the Kettlebeck team, Ermie feels right at home. She knew from the beginning that Kettlebeck was something different, something I had to be a part of. One of the key mantras at the heart of Kettlebecks philosophy is that We dont build houses. We build homes. Ermie has taken this obligation to build the intangible aspects of a home to heart. Whether its listening to a clients specific needs or trying to work with a familys unique situation, she carries out her duties with the utmost care.

Ermie strives to uphold the standards of Kettlebeck by achieving phenomenal results, but she does it with such style, compassion, and warmth. Ermie is always ecstatic when a clients ethereal dream home becomes a reality and she gets to witness the reactions while this dream comes true. Whether its a simple embrace, a heartfelt thank you, or a quick visit to the sales office just to say hello, its the simple things in those interactions that count. To Ermie, it is integral that the process of finding a home is more a partnership with the client than a matter of simply telling the homeowner whats available. This partnership ultimately creates a far more fulfilling experience for both parties: Their gratitude, the look on their faces when all our hard work and combined efforts come to fruition, thats the best.

Ermies experience and energy have created an aura of excellence that precedes her wherever she chooses to lend her talents to. The intangible aspects of home buying are always the more daunting obstacles to overcome, yet Ermie handles them masterfully. Ermie uses her grace and natural talent to seamlessly ease her families into a new and exciting phase of their lives. Reminiscing on her role in so many peoples lives, Ermie thinks fondly of the appreciation she receives from clients, saying, Most of all, [the satisfaction] was being part of fulfilling their dreams.
