BIBLE STUDIES

Sunday Bible Study – 9:45 am

STUDY OF THE BOOK OF HEBREWS

The Book of Hebrews compares and contrasts Jesus to key historical people and events from the Old Testament. Through these comparisons, we see His superiority. He is greater than angels, the Torah, Moses, the Promised Land, priests, Melchizedek, sacrifices and the covenant. He is God’s Word, the hope for a new creation, our eternal priest and the perfect sacrifice. Throughout the book, we are also challenged to remain faithful to Jesus and follow great models of faith from the Old Testament, despite hardships and persecution. These challenges will make us uncomfortable but instead of fearing them, remember that rejecting Jesus is foolish. Jesus is the ultimate revelation of God’s love and mercy and is worthy of all our trust and devotion. ************************************

Wednesday Bible Study – 6:30 pm

STUDY OF THE BOOK OF 1 SAMUEL

God’s grace in 1 Samuel is exemplified by Samuel as a type of Jesus, since he is a prophet, priest and king. His importance as God’s representative is similar to that of Moses, for he was instrumental in the continuity of the covenant during the transition from the rule of judges to the reign of kings. In this study, we see how God continues to remain faithful, even when the people of Israel do not. Their new king, Saul, makes several mistakes and angers the Lord, but the Lord raises up for Israel a new king, David. This study will show how God’s kingdom was established and designed, giving us a clearer picture of how we should live as God’s subjects under His reign. ************************************

LWML (Lutheran Women Missionary League)

The topic for the June 2019 Circle meetings is found in the Spring 2019 Quarterly on page 20 entitled “Running the Race”; authored by Shari Miller. Shari is a freelance author and musician living in Helena, Montana. She and her family attends First Lutheran Church. She has written numerous articles and studies for the LWML. Shari is the Montana District LWML President.

Are we ready to run the race prepared before us? Do we have the right “gear” to accomplish the task? Are we willing to bear all things required the runner? Roll Call Word “Love”. Alpha Circle will be meeting Tuesday, June 11, 2019, 1:00 pm, at the home of Darsa Clay. Connie Shepard will Co-Host. Topic will be led by Ruth Brackman and Carol Head will check the acolyte robes for laundering or mending needs. “CONVENTION” – The 38th Biennial Convention of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League will be held June 20-23, 2019, in Mobile, Alabama. The LWML Women, no matter their age, will gather in Mobile under the theme “In Praise to the Lord”. New officers will be elected, mission grants selected, new friendships formed, missionary speakers will be heard and Bible Studies led.

“MITES and MITES – MITES IN ACTION” - Glory and praise to our Heavenly Father!!! The 2017-2019 LWML Mission Goal of $2,075,000, is fulfilled. Total amount received was $2,179,373.76; which is $97,373.76 above and beyond the mission goal. Words cannot express the love and generosity of LWML Women in Mission. May God continue to bless these women who keep the little “Mite Boxes” filled with pennies and dimes. The mighty penny indeed!

“GLASSES” – EYE GLASSES – so desperately needed. Please bring your old glasses to church and place them in the container provided on the counter. Let us help those who, at no fault of their own, cannot obtain the glasses needed to read or write, or do the work needed to support their families.

Religious Display Case

The Religious Display Case has cards available. Take a look at the get-well

cards, birthday cards, praying for you cards and cards of concern that are

available. All boxed cards are five dollars ($5.00).

This is a service provided for the congregation by the LWML. There are

always LWML ladies in the coffee room to assist.

Sewing Bee

The ladies plan to meet in the Fellowship Hall at 9:30 am every Monday in June. Bring a sack lunch and stay into the afternoon. In early May, we had completed 47 quilts and 34 lap robes this year. We recently received a large quantity of really nice fabric. We would welcome more ladies to come and help us sort all of

the fabric. Many ladies have said they don’t sew. You won’t be forced to sew! Please save your Best Choice UPC’s, “Box Tops for Education”, soap and other samples you get from hotels and cancelled commemorative and foreign stamps. Containers for these are on the shelf in the Narthex.

A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER

Each week, there is a significant number of Homebound Members listed in the weekly bulletin as well as a significant list of ill and recovering members. These are Peace members who are out of sight but not out of mind. A word of encouragement or letting them know they are remembered in prayer would be truly welcomed. Why not stop by the Religious Card Display to pick up a card, write a few words in it and let someone know that you are thinking and praying for them. It’s a small way to participate in the ministry of Peace.

With so many different Christian denominations, it can be difficult to understand exactly what each really teaches. This booklet summarizes the history, doctrine, and statistics of seventeen different Christian denominations.

This booklet, along with a new booklet “A Simple Explanation of Christianity” is located on the shelf under the large bulletin board. It is a handy 32-page Small Catechism in the paperback form. For nearly 500 years, this simple explanation of Christianity has been used around the world and translated into hundreds of languages. It has remained popular because it summarizes the Bible’s key teaching so simply, clearly and memorable. Read it for yourself, and then pass along copies to others. God has good news for you.

For the Teen (maybe your friend) in Your Life: Just bringing it to your attention once again: there are several pamphlets on different topics written with a teenager in mind. These pamphlets, Care Notes For Teens, are placed to the left as you exit the entrance to the parking lot. Here are the highlights of three topics: “Suicide Prevention: Getting Help Before It’s Too Late”

Here is one excerpt from this very informative pamphlet: Five warning signs for depression in teens:

• Feelings of sadness or hopelessness, often accompanied by anxiety

• Declining school performance

• Loss of pleasure/interest in social and sports activities

• Sleeping too little or too much

• Changes in weight or appetite “It’s very important to take seriously when someone is talking about killing themselves…even if they’re not at immediate risk…it signifies that somebody is struggling, it signifies that they’re in trouble, and…that they need help.” Kerry Lubell, Ph.D., National Center of Injury Prevention and Control “Dealing With Bullying – At School or Online”

Add in everyone who has been bullied at some point in “real life” – in a classroom, on a sports team, on the school bus, in the neighborhood, even at a church or club activity – and you end up with just about everybody. It happens. This pamphlet not only offers empathy but expands on some helpful pointers. Organizations and Online Resources are also offered.

• Find friends who don’t need to bully

• Talk to your parents

• Get the outside help you need (this section points out students who committed suicide because of cyber-bullying)

• Focus on your personal goals

• Being the bully hurts, too “When a Relationship Seems Abusive”

This pamphlet points out that abuse is not always physical but also verbal or emotional. Here is a disturbing fact: in a group of 100 high school girls, 33 are likely to be in a relationship like yours – meaning abusive. “A relationship is abusive when one person acts in a way that disrespects, frightens, manipulates, or tries to control the other person.” Red Flags are pointed out as well as information on recognizing the cycle of abuse. Finally, options with a trusted adult are advocated. Also listed is the National Teen Dating Abuse Helpline: 1-866-331-9474, plus the website: www.loveisrespect.org.

Strength and Honor These words usually bring to mind our military and warfare, but in this instance the words are the title of a pamphlet that has been added to the Lutheran Hour Spinner in the church entryway. The war it refers to isn’t across the ocean in some distant land, but one right in our own computer environment and living room. This pamphlet deals with spiritual warfare against pornography. Pornography, sadly, is a word all too familiar these days. To say porn has crept into our households would be an understatement; its advance has been more like a march,

leaving a host of casualties in its wake: individuals, marriages, families, relationships, careers, sometimes even one’s faith-go down the drain, as this take-no-prisoner scourge derails Christian and non-Christian alike. In this booklet, the reader will find insights and hope for dealing with the problems brought on by pornography. The words offered here are Christ-centered, to the point, and deliver a Christian approach to battling the pernicious vice. Its overriding aim is to help individuals defeat pornographic addition in their lives, and with the power of God’s grace it can be done. As the author writes, “It is in His Name we conquer strongholds, including those built around the deception and slavery of pornography.”
