Spirit Spotlight

GUS SCHMID

The interaction between Gus and his daughter during the

time he was moving to Spanish Cove was inspiring, so we thought it would be wonderful to highlight this great dad as our Spirit Spotlight for the Father’s Day

edition in June. Gus Schmid was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Gus’ father came from Germany when he was just 15 years old. Gus’

dad worked at a bakery in Philly and ended up marrying the boss’ daughter.

They had two boys, the oldest being Gus. When Gus’ grandfather died they

moved to Feasterville, Pennsylvania where Gus started grade school. They moved several times and ended up in

Skipbottom, New Jersey on Longbeach Island which was about a mile off the coast. Gus graduated from Barnegat High School on the mainland. Ultimately, they moved

back to Philly where Gus started working for Western Electric. He met his soon to be wife Elizabeth (Betty) while working there. Gus left WE and started working at RCA.

During this time he went to night school. He attended LaSalle College and obtained his BS in Electronic Physics. He started in the factory, but after he graduated from college he became an engineer for RCA. Gus and Betty were married in 1955 and had 4 children, 3 girls and 1 boy.

Gus worked with RCA 20 years and has many fond memories. He recalled when he and a group of his employees went on strike for five weeks. By the time he got back to work his supervisor offered him a management position. After leaving RCA, Gus worked for Honeywell. He had a short 3 years with that company in Oklahoma then off to Massachusetts. Gus left Honeywell after 15 years then worked for a company called EMC². He retired from there in 1996 and they decided to move back to Oklahoma because his wife loved the three years they spent here. They lived together in South Pointe Estates from 1996 to 2012, the year Betty passed away. Gus stayed in the house until 2013. Two of Gus and Betty’s four children live in the OKC metro area and two live out of state. Gus has 9 grandkids and 2 great-grandkids.

Gus heard lots of good things about Spanish Cove from his church friends, Larry & Lois Cain and Roy & Dolores Privott. Gus’ children were very supportive of him moving to the Cove and packed him up and moved him so he wouldn’t have to worry about anything. Sounds to me like a great dad raised some great kids, but if you tell Gus that, he’ll just tell you he had an amazing wife and mother of his children. We are very blessed to have another great dad, in Gus, living at Spanish Cove and we want to wish all the dads out there a Happy Father’s Day!

Gus Schmid

When you were young, your parents tried to simplify things in order for you to

understand them better. It is funny that as we age and the world changes, we need the young people to simplify things so we can understand them better.

I am not sure why, but many of us get stuck in our ‘comfort zone’ and waiver on learning new things. While the comfort zone seems like a safe

place to be, there are some drawbacks; namely lowering self-expectations, not growing as a person, not realizing your full God-given potential.

Wikipedia defines the comfort zone as a psychological state in which a person feels familiar, at ease, in control and experiences low anxiety and stress. It sounds like happiness but is it really? Drug companies use different words to define the comfort zone: Prozac, Cymbalta, Zoloft and dozens of other names.

None of us are capable of keeping up with the rest of the world. Neither are we able to control most adverse events around us. Stressing over it does not help. If you get too stressed, you may fall into the drug companies welcoming arms.

Comfort is a value, not a virtue. It should not be a guideline for living. While it is nice to stay in your comfort zone, you may be giving up important opportunities to grow by avoiding some discomfort.

Although we dislike stress and think of it as a negative, uncontrolled hardship, some stress is good for us, particularly if it challenges you to grow and learn. When you grow and learn, your soul prospers; you become a better you.

One of the most impactful books my children have read is called “Do Hard Things.” It was written by teenage brothers as a challenge against low expectations. It has helped my children to understand that a better life is much more important than an easy life. The main lesson from this book is that we grow primarily by taking advantages of opportunities that take us out of our comfort zone. I am sure in your own experiences, you have learned more when you have tried tackling the hard things.

I want to challenge you today to get out of your comfort zone and do a hard thing. There is joy in the evening when you give it your best every day.

Sincerely,Don

Life The Way You Want It

I love the BALANCE acronym - Building A Lifestyle of Activity, Nutrition, Confidence and Energy. Sounds like the perfect lifestyle, but the question is; How do we build it, how

do we achieve it and how do we keep it?Activity – To build a lifestyle of activity we must participate! Participate in; an exercise

class, playing games, singing in a choir, quilting, gardening, playing golf, dancing and doing things that you enjoy.

Nutrition – No matter your age or previous eating habits, it’s never too late to change your diet and improve the way you think and feel. Good nutrition keeps muscles, bones, organs and other body parts strong for the long haul. Eating vitamin-rich food boosts immunity and fights illness. Key nutrients are essential for the brain to do its job. People who eat a wide selection of fruit, leafy veggies and fish and nuts can improve focus and decrease their risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Wholesome foods give you more energy, boosts your mood and self-esteem. It’s all connected – when your body feels good you feel happier inside and out.

Confidence – A 2012 university study found that loss of mobility might be due, in part, to “balance confidence”, an issue closely related to a fear of falling. There is a relationship between balance confidence and mobility and balance performance. To test balance confidence, researchers used a simple but comprehensive measure called the Activities-specific Balance Confidence Scale (ABC Scale). The ABC scale can be self-administered, and is comprised of a series of questions that gauge a senior’s confidence in various walking scenarios, such as walking up stairs or on an icy path. Adults who rated a higher balance confidence tended to do better in balance and mobility tests. Improving balance confidence my reduce falls and keep you active and independent. How do we improve balance confidence? Move more and participate in balance programs like Tai Chi.

Energy – Get and Stay active to improve your energy level. Making a point to get regular exercise can improve your strength and increase your energy level, according to the National Institute on Aging. You don’t have to hit the gym hard to get benefits, either -- just 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise on most days of the week is enough to make a positive difference. Brisk walking, gardening, dancing and biking are all good activities to engage in. If you’re not already active, start slowly, with easy 10- or 15-minute exercise sessions, and build up to more challenging activities. Try our new Intro to Toning & Movement Class. “Happiness is not a matter of intensity but of balance, order, rhythm and harmony.” ~Thomas Merton

When I hear that June is approaching, the first thing that comes to my mind is Father’s Day. Did you know that this special day almost didn’t happen? Mother’s Day was declared a holiday in 1914

by President Woodrow Wilson. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge urged state governments to observe Father’s Day, too. But many men scoffed at the idea and refused to be a part, deriding the suggestion as a commercial gimmick to sell more products which were often paid for by the father himself. It wasn’t until 1972, nearly 50 years later, that President Richard Nixon signed a proclamation making Father’s Day a federal holiday.

So, I am thankful for President Nixon’s insistence on Father’s Day. Fathers are special people. They are to be the head of the household. (Yes, I still cling to that outdated philosophy!) Fathers are to lead, protect and love. I am so thankful that I had a father who served our family in this way, and most of all that he believed in me, encouraging me to be all I could.

Over 20 million of the youth today have no positive male role model. Studies show that young children and teens without positive male role models struggle with self-esteem, productivity and poor decision making. The good news, though, is that it’s not too late to make an impact. Maybe you have raised a child, or a whole nest of kiddos, and see your child-rearing days as behind you. Even so, you can still be a role model to the youth that work here at Spanish Cove, a grandchild, or even a student in Yukon Schools. Mentoring a child might make a huge impact in that person’s life. All it takes to be a mentor at a local school is 30 minutes a week of your time. 30 minutes to help shape a child’s future. What an honor. If you are interested in being a mentor next school year, contact me. Every child should have someone who is absolutely crazy about them. Together, let’s share our time to make sure they have that person. Happy Father’s Day.
