dents for their academic

excellence as they were

inducted into the National

Technical Honor Society

June 17 at the Callaway

Conference Center on the

east campus in LaGrange.

To be considered for mem-

bership in the National

Technical Honor Society,

students must have a 3.66

GPA and must be enrolled

in a diploma, degree or

degree core certificate pro-

gram. Additional require-

ments include having a 2 or

better in Work Ethics,

involvement in school,

church, or community

organizations, the comple-

tion of 15 semester credit

hours, and a nomination by

an instructor or advisor.

Upon graduation, members

of the National Technical

Honor Society receive three

letters of recommendation

from the national office to

take with them on job inter-

views. Members have

access to the National

Technical Honor Society

Online Career Center to aid

in finding employment.

$135,000 in scholarship

WGTC Inducts 17 New Honor Society Members

A special, one time only per-

formance will be held in the

LSPA Black Box theater on

Saturday, June 27th. This

tribute will be to honor

George Czarnonycz, who has

given his time and talents for

the past ten years photograph-

ing LSPA productions.

Recently some major health

setbacks have totally disrupt-

ed his life and his friends at

the Lafayette Society for

Performing Arts are having a

benefit to help him and his

family purchase a handicap

equipped van.

Living with Multiple

Sclerosis (MS) for 25 years is

something that most of us

cannot imagine. Living with

Multiple Sclerosis for 25

years and subsequently suf-

fering a ruptured spinal

aneurysm is nothing short of

devastating. This is the cur-

rent state in which George

Czarnonycz finds himself.

In 1990, George was diag-

nosed with MS at the age of

30. With a wife, three chil-

dren, and fourth soon to

come, he was determined to

not let the debilitating disease

hinder his ambitions as a lov-

ing husband and father. Over

the years, George adjusted

the best he could to a gradual

loss of mobility, balance,

coordination, and strength.

Eventually, the effects of MS

forced him to discontinue his

formal career in IT. Once

again, he adjusted and pushed

forward, taking up secondary

self-employment ventures in

web-design, computer

repairs, and photography

his newfound passion.

On February 25th, 2015 the

aforementioned cumulative

effects of MS caused George

to fall and sustain traumatic

head injuries. Consequently,

the fall triggered a previously

undiagnosed spinal aneurysm

to rupture. After hospital

stays of 1 day in LaGrange,

GA and 3 days in Columbus,

GA, he was transferred to

Emory University Hospital in

Atlanta, GA due to the severi-

ty of his condition. After a

week of extreme pain and

partial paralysis with minimal

improvement, it was deter-

mined that surgery was the

only option.

The surgery was a success

and the aneurysm was

repaired; however, due to the

unique and extremely rare

location of the rupture, fur-

ther nerve damage could not

be prevented. This ultimately

left George without the use of

his legs.

After spending a total of 23

days at Emory, he was sent to

Health South rehab facility in

Newnan, GA to start the

arduous ordeal of preparing

for life in a wheelchair and

relearning the basic tasks that

many of us take for granted.

It is uncertain how much of

his mobility will be regained,

but the ability to bear weight

on at least one leg will be

considered a blessing at this

point.

After only three short weeks

of acute rehabilitation, his

health insurance provider

would no longer continue to

cover the treatment he needs.

LaGrange Named Finalists in PetSafe

Brands 2015 Bark for Your Park Contest

PetSafe brand, an

industry leader in the

tive pet behavioral, con-

Watkinsville and

LaGrange, Ga. are two

of the 15 finalists in its

fifth annual Bark for

Your Park Contest.

If Watkinsville wins

this years Bark for

Your Park contest, a

PetSafe dog park would

be on approximately

three acres of property

located at Oconee

Veterans Park. If

LaGrange wins this

years contest, a

PetSafe dog park would

be built on approxi-

mately one acre of

property located on

West Haralson Street.

More than 1,000 com-

munities were nominat-

ed for this years con-

test, which will award

one community with

$100,000 and four run-

ner-ups with $25,000

each to build an off-

leash dog park in their

community. The 15

finalists were selected

based on total number

of votes in the first

phase, and were broken

into three categories

based on the communi-

tys population size:

small, medium and

large. Watkinsville and

LaGrange each earned

themselves a spot as

one of this years final-

ists in the large city

category.

Voting for the 15 com-

munities is open now

through July 22, 2015.

The 15 finalist commu-

nities will receive a

finalist kit that includes

tools to help get the

word out to their com-

munity and encourage

them to vote in the con-

test. The kit includes t-

shirts for dog park lead-

ers, yard signs to place

around town, stickers,

window clings and

other items to help

communities garner

more votes.

The community with

the highest number of

votes will receive the

grand prize of $100,000

to build an off-leash

dog park in their com-

munity. PetSafe will

also award four runner-

up prizes of $25,000

each to the community

with the most votes in

each small, medium and

large category as well

as the community with

the highest voting per-

centage per capita,

which will receive the

Bark from Your Heart

award. Winners will be

announced on July 31,

2015.

One year, Johnny's fam-

ily was having an

"extended family" 4th

of July cookout at their

home. One of the spe-

cial treats that year was

lighting the fireworks

(Roman candles, bottle

rockets, missile batter-

ies, etc.) they had

bought out of state

(they're illegal in their

state, of course!).

Just before they were to

arrive, a cousin called,

saying his neighbors'

plans had just fallen

through and asking if he

could bring them along

to the picnic -- they

even had extra food to

bring. "Sure, the more

the merrier!"

When the cousin

arrived with his neigh-

bors, it was discovered

that the head of that

family was a police

officer. Johnny's father

turned as innocently as

he could to his son and

whispered to him to

grab the paper bag of

fireworks sitting in the

kitchen and hide them

somewhere quickly.

Johnny disappeared,

and the father changed

the topic to food for the

day. This family had

brought some chicken

to grill, so the father

told them the gas grill

was all set to use out

back -- they just had to

turn on the gas and

push the ignition button

with the lid still closed.

They headed out to the

back as Johnny returned

through the front door.

The father hurried to

him and said, "Whew,

that was close! That

man's a police officer,

and he almost saw the

fireworks. Did you hide

them real well?"

"Oh, yeah, nobody will

ever think to look in the

grill!"

21st. The future is uncertain,

and the medical expenses up

to this point have been signif-

icant. In addition to years of

MS treatments, Georges son

Kyle was diagnosed with

Stage III Hodgkins

Lymphoma in December

2011 at the age of 19, for

which he underwent a year of

chemotherapy. He is current-

ly in remission but continues

to require frequent overnight

hospital stays due to second-

ary complications. Medical

expenses will continue to

accumulate.

One of the most urgent needs

for George right now is to be

able to buy a handicap

equipped vehicle so that he

can get to numerous doctor

and therapy appointments.

Presently he has no trans-

portation available to him.

LaGrange Toyota is allowing

George to purchase a Toyota

Sienna van at cost. To help

with this, his friends at the

Lafayette Society for

Performing Arts will be pre-

senting a benefit performance

to honor all of his incredible

contributions that he has

given LSPA. LSPA is doing

this performance to honor his

ten year tenure with the

organization. In addition to

the performance on the 22nd,

his friends will be selling $10

raffle tickets to win a 40 HD

TV. The drawing will be July

4th. Both Hillside

Montessori of LaGrange and

First Presbyterian Montessori

also joined forces and are

having a VANtastic

Rummage sale on June 6th at

Doc Spiers place on

Jefferson Street . All pro-

ceeds will go directly to this

purchase.
