From Your Pastor: Dr Jim Ewing
One of my goals for this calendar year was to lead FBC into a greater engagement with our local community. As culture grows more secular, there is a corresponding sense that the church is becoming increasingly irrelevant to the life of the local community. That means if we’re going to be successful in our Great Commission call to lead others to faith in Jesus Christ, we must not let ourselves become irrelevant here in Calvert City.
To that end, we have been ramping up our community involvement activities since the first of the year. Our first activity was to be a part of the “Paint It Forward” effort in February ... that was the precursor to the “Fill the Bowl” project in April. The funds collected supported the “Bags of Hope” ministry that feeds many hungry folks in Marshall County as well as the county school resource centers. Thank you - to all who played a part in serving through these ministries.
On May 11, we passed out some 52 dozen cookies to over 30 Calvert City businesses in what we called a “Business Blast.” Thanks to all of you who provided cookies ... and helped deliver then. It was a great event and we have received some wonderful feedback from those businesses. Through these simple acts of kindness ... with no strings attached ... we were able to touch our community very powerfully.
Coming this summer, we have several other opportunities to make a difference. Since April, we’ve been collecting supplies to support the Kentucky Sheriff’s Boys and Girls Ranch in Gilbertsville. Each week over the summer, some 50-70 kids per week participate in the summer camp. By the time you get this letter, we will have delivered them. The folks at the Ranch sincerely appreciate all you do to support them. Then, on June 9, and again on July 14, we’re going out to the Ranch to fix a hot dog dinner as well as sponsoring the Polar Ice team to provide snow cones to the kids.
Also in June we’ll hold our annual Vacation Bible School program for our own kids and for kids across the Calvert City community. The dates are 24-28 June, from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm. This is a time when many kids begin to get serious about a relationship with God. If you can help, please give our Children’s Director, Janet Dietsch, a call. I’m sure she can find a place for you to serve!
On July 4th, we’ll be participating in the Annual Calvert City Ameribration Parade. We plan to run golf carts and pass out candy and AWANA invite cards along the parade route. We’ll be holding a Parade Party & Pizza Lunch on Sunday, June 30 right after church to get the materials ready for the parade on Thursday, July 4.
For the months of June and July we’ll also be sponsoring the HOPE Clinic Crisis Pregnancy Center’s Baby Bottle Fundraiser. Bottles will be available starting June 2. Just fill up your bottle with loose change ... bills are always welcome ... and bring them back to the church by Wednesday, July 31.
In August, we’re going to hold a Free Community Car Wash ... actual date TBD ... another opportunity to make a difference in our community. We won’t take donations ... but we want to make sure we do a good job. If you can help ... we’ll have washing teams, window teams, drying teams ... and visiting teams. Having done this before in other communities, it’s not something people expect, but something they really appreciate. Small and simple things can make a big difference.
Looking to the Fall, we are pursuing an opportunity to partner with Marshall County High School’s resource center. Most of us are familiar with the elementary and Middle School Resource Centers ... but our High School kids have similar needs. More to come as this develops.
There’s more coming in the Fall ... I’ll let you know as we get closer. Thank you, church family, for helping us be relevant ... for helping us make a difference in life of the Calvert City community.
One last thing, as we head into Fall, we’re looking at re-designing our church newsletter. First, the staff is talking about what we can provide in the letter that might better meet your needs. If you have any thoughts, please let me, or one of our staff know. Also, we’re considering re-naming this Newsletter ... so we’re asking you for ideas. You can hand me a note ... or shoot a text/email to us.
Making a difference is why we exist. First, to serve and support each other in the family of God. But second, to be a light to our community and demonstrating through what we do, what it is we believe. Thank you for helping us be what God has called us to be. As the old saying goes: They don’t’ care how much you know until they know how much you care. May we always be a church that cares ... so our community can hear about Jesus. Together in Him, Bro Jim

School’s Out and the children are enjoying their summer vacation!
Last month was very busy for us with the AWANA Grand Prix, Mother’s Day, graduation, and teacher appreciation. I would like to thank Nancy Whitler, Ron & Joan Lappin, Nigel Broyles, Anna Hodge, Phyllis O’Bryan, Trena Gregory, Jean Smith, & Jim Ewing for all the food provided for the teacher appreciation lunch for Calvert Elementary. Also a big thank you to Jean Smith, Danny Granstaff, & Jim Ewing for helping to set up, take care of and clean up. We couldn’t have done it without you. JUMP had their annual School’s Out party on May 29th at Maggie’s Jungle Golf. Oh, what fun they had! JUMP will still meet during the summer. We will be learning about Who Is My Neighbor? Come and join us when you
can. Don’t forget Kids Town Jubilee Chorus meets on the 1st Wednesday of each month. AWANA will start again on August 11th with registration. AWANA leaders will meet on August 4th to get ready for the new year. We hope to see you then. VBS will be June 24-28. You can register on line at the church’s website. This year we will “Power Up” and raise our game. We still need volunteers if you would like to help. Talk to Rita Tabor or Janet Dietsch and they will find a spot for you. If you can’t help that week, but would like to do something, contact Rita or Janet. We have some things to do to get ready and you can help. We decorate on Saturday, June22 & Sunday, June 23. Come on out and help. It will be greatly appreciated. Also we will have shirts for VBS. We do ask for a $5.00 donation for the shirt. Children in Christ, Janet Dietsch
Music Ministry: Danny Granstaff
Have you ever wondered why we sing so much? Is it really necessary, every time we gather together as the people of God, that we sing? In a sense, all of creation is singing, declaring the greatness of God. The rivers, the wind, the trees, the towering mountains. By their existence they exalt God. But we as the people of God have a special privilege – to praise God by our existence but also to praise him with our song. Here’s a few reasons why: 7 Reasons Why Singing Matters 1. Singing is Commanded in Scripture – This isn’t an upgrade for deeper Christians. This isn’t a suggestion. the Bible commands us to sing to the Lord. His glory compels us. 2. Our God is a Singing God – I love this verse in Matthew 26:30 – “And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.” Before Jesus was given up to be crucified, he sang with his disciples. Zephaniah 3:17 also says – “The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness. 3. Singing Engages our Memory – The songs we sing shape us and form us. Primarily because we remember them. They stick with us. Through joyful times and dark times they provide us with an anchor of hope. 4. Singing Engages our Emotions – Worship is more than just agreeing with theology. CS Lewis said, “I think we delight to praise what we enjoy because the praise
not merely expresses but completes the enjoyment; it is its appointed consummation.” While we don’t want to worship emotionalism, singing and worship helps us find the best outlet for our emotions. It compels us to sing. 5. Singing is an Overflow of Seeing – I once heard someone say a healthy church is a singing church. Because the overflow of seeing God at work is to praise Him for his vast excellencies. The more we see, the more we want to sing and be in the presence of such an amazing God. 6. Singing Unifies a Congregation – Singing unifies. It’s the best way to bring together a large group of people from diverse backgrounds and experiences and focus them on a single goal. 7. Singing is Our Battle Plan – Worship is the way we do war. We don’t face our giants and fight our battles in our own strength. We simple lift up the name of Jesus and watch Him work. He is our breakthrough. He is our answer. In some ways, we need to be less concerned with the practicalities of our singing and more concerned about the spiritual fire of our presence. Good singing matters. Tone matters. Control matters. So sing with a fire in your bones. Open Your Eyes. Smile. Own every lyric. Be Bold. And watch what God will do. Blessing to you all, Danny

The new outdoor sign should be in place before the end of the month. The foundation is curing and we’ll be setting it in place with the assistance of a crane.
On other fronts, there are some additional exterior signs the will be hung soon. We’re also diligently trying to discover the cause of the mystery water seeping up through the tiles in the hallway to the Fellowship Hall.
The new door in the Anteroom is in place and it looks beautiful as well as adding much needed security to that part of the building.
Yours in Christ, Ray Tucker
