NOC Poetry Seminar set for July 8 and 9 at Kaw Lake
Northern Oklahoma College is
offering a two-day poetry writing
seminar on Friday, July 8, and Saturday,
July 9, at NOC Cove on Kaw Lake.
The course will give aspiring area
poets a chance to sharpen their skills
through a series of guided exercises,
small-group and large-group workshops,
reading and discussion of selected
poems by both well-known and
relatively obscure American poets, and
plenty of time for solitary reflection and
writing.
Dr. Don Stinson, chair of NOC‘s
Language Arts Division and author of
dozens of poems published in regional
and national literary magazines and
online, will facilitate the weekend‘s
sessions.
―Poetry is a little unusual among the
arts because almost everyone writes
poems at one time or another, but most
people never study the art of poetry
writing,‖ Stinson said. ―This course is
intended to be a fun, non-threatening
way for people to dip their toes into a
little bit of the ‗how to‘ of writing
poetry and meet other people who share
a passion for words and ideas.‖
The course, listed in the NOC
schedule as ENGL 1450, is a one-credit
hour class. In addition to tuition and
fees for the one hour, participants pay a
$20 fee to cover the costs of class
materials, drinks, and food.
Sessions will run from 12-9 p.m. on
Friday and from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on
Saturday. Participants are welcome to
bring bedding and toiletries and spend
the night at the NOC Cove lodge
building if they desire.
Current NOC students may enroll
online, at the University Center in
Ponca City, or at the campuses in Enid,
Stillwater, or Tonkawa.
For information about being
admitted to NOC and enrolling in the
course, visit www.north-ok.edu . You

NOC ballplayers honored Published in the Blackwell Journal-Tribune, June 10, 2011
The Northern Oklahoma College Mavericks baseball team had a solid season as a group this year, and now several
individual standouts have been recognized for their achievements.
The Mavs had three players named to the First Team All Region squad. Center fielder J.P. Maples, first baseman Zach
Gonzalez and designated hitter Dustin Stokes were named with that prestigious honor.
Even more of NOC‘s athletes made the Second Team All Region, including catcher Martin Rosario, second baseman Hector
Rivera, shortstop Trevor Long and outfielder Anderson Mateo.
Defensively, the team was strong all year, and two individuals were awarded for their consistent defensive performance, in
addition to their overall contributions. Hector Rivera and Anderson Mateo were named First Team Golden Glove.
The team‘s run in the NJCAA Region II tournament was spurred on by the play of Trevor Long, Zach Gonzalez and J.P.
Maples, all of whom were named to the All Tournament Team.
With the season now over, several of the sophomores who made big contributions to the team this year will be moving on to
four-year schools.
J.P. Maples is headed to the University of Central Oklahoma. Spencer Penrod will attend East Central University, while
Hector Rivera plans to continue at Rogers State.
Designated hitter Dustin Stokes will be attending Northwestern Oklahoma State University, along with teammate Trevor
Long.
Seth Sturgeon is headed off to the University of Arts and Sciences of Oklahoma, as is Zach Gonzalez.
Martin Rosario will continue his education at Oklahoma Baptist University.

NOC Lady Mavs basketball camp underway in Tonkawa this week Published in the Blackwell Journal-Tribune, June 14, 2011
The 2011 Northern Oklahoma College Lady Mavs basketball
camp is hosting young athletes from miles around this week.
The camp, which is open to girls in grades fourth through
seventh, began June 12th and runs through the week, ending the
17th.
The camp is designed to work on both individual and team
skills. Much of the focus will be on fundamentals of the game that
can be incorporated into a team concept.
A primary focus will be on drills to emphasize the basics of
basketball, but there will be no shortage of opportunities for the
girls to participate in live games.
Teams will play several games per day, simulating a college-
style camp atmosphere.
Some of the specific mass drills the girls will be taking part in
are ball handling, dribbling, passing, defensive stance, pivots, post
defense and shooting form.
Additionally, station drills will include layups, pick and roll,
rebounding and outlet passing, blocking out and defensive
communication, just to name a few.
And to compete in the ever-changing offensive schemes of the modern game, team transition offense will be a priority. Floor
balance, how to fill lanes, court spacing, advancing the ball and good shot selection will all be focused on.
This year, there are over 120 girls participating in the camp, which has become a mainstay at NOC. The skills they learn will help them compete in the ever-changing basketball landscape.

Oklahoma FreeWheel to Celebrate again in Tonkawa Tonkawa will once again host
Oklahoma FreeWheel on its last night
of a 450+ mile ride. The event is an
annual bicycle ride across Oklahoma –
this is the 33rd
edition of the touring
event. This year, the group of nearly
1000 riders will begin in Durant, OK
and travel north through dozens of
small towns on their way to Caldwell,
Kansas.
Tonkawa will be the final overnight
destination with the group arriving
Friday, June 17th and setting up camp
at Northern Oklahoma College. This
will be the second time NOC and
Tonkawa have welcomed the group.
We last hosted this event in 2008 and
we were selected as the ―favorite
overnight host town‖ as voted upon by
the participants. For several weeks, the
Tonkawa Chamber of Commerce and
Northern Oklahoma College have been
making plans for this event and are
confident that we will once again show
Oklahoma FreeWheel that Tonkawa is
a great place to be.
The riders, along with friends and
family, will begin arriving in the
morning to set up tents and get ready
for a day of relaxation and fun. Since
it‘s the last stop for the tour, OK
FreeWheel has planned an evening of
entertainment for the participants. The
(fabulous) ―Mid Life Crisis‖ band will
play from 7-9 p.m. that evening and the
community is invited to come out and
join in the fun. The band from Tulsa,
OK plays classic rock music from the
60‘s and 70‘s and were voted the ―Best
of the Best‖ in 2009 by Oklahoma
Magazine.
Food vendors, including
organization/group fundraisers, are
welcome to set up and provide food,
snacks and drinks for the group. To
sign up or for more information,
contact the Chamber of Commerce,
580-628-2220. There will be an
evening meal provided for the group so
only snacks and drinks will need to be
offered after about 4 p.m. Tonkawa
businesses that would like to advertise
sales, specials and discount
opportunities should also contact the
Chamber as they will be putting
together an informational flier for the
participants.
2008 Oklahoma FreeWheel bicycle riders settle in for the night on the NOC campus prior to the final leg of their 450 mile

combining new media experiences;
students will gain the skills necessary

production but to help shape the
future of technology as an employee
as well.‖
He said, ―DMI‘s educational
experience in animation and digital
media can lead to jobs in several
industries. In the entertainment
industry job offerings exist in video
gaming, broadcast design, visual
effects and digital film. Other job
opportunities are in the fields of
government, healthcare, and
industrial professions with

corporate identity. Also, there are
opportunities in web design and
development including streaming
