News from Northern
Art exhibition at NOC P-A-I-N-T by arni anderson (he prefers his name in lower case) features a series of
Native American portraits, large abstracts and plein air paintings in the Eleanor Hays Art
Gallery on the Northern Oklahoma College Tonkawa campus. Included in the more than 60
pieces are artworks honoring the most influential historical artists in his life, located in the
West Gallery.
A self-styled impressionistic realist, Anderson’s forte is watercolor. His work is included
in collections in many states and in several foreign countries. His paintings have received
more than 450 awards and honors in major competitions.
The free exhibit runs through March 29. Gallery hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Monday
through Friday and during performances in the Kinzer Performing Arts Center, according to gallery director Audrey Schmitz.
Anderson made his first foray into the art world as a four-and-a-half year-old by painting a picture of his grandmother
on the back of his paint-by-numbers Christmas gift. “I got a spanking for wasting paint,” he recalled. “I was never encouraged
to paint, I just did it,” he said.
A native of Huntsville, Ala., Anderson “was an eight-year drop out from college” before deciding to go back to school and
earn a degree to teach art. He transferred nine credit hours from Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, Tenn. to Harding
University in Searcy, Ark. and completed four years’ undergraduate work and a graduate program for a Master of Education
degree in two years and three months.
About 1975 Anderson created his first corporate work, 21 paintings for the MacDonald’s store in Searcy, eventually
completing from 20 to 40 paintings in each of seven stores in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Mississippi.
During 36 years in art education, Anderson taught in the Harding Art Department before coming in 1976 to head the
Oklahoma Christian University Art Department. After leaving OCU, he was Artist-in-Residence for the state of Oklahoma for a
total of seven years, working with 59 different school districts. He also taught art at Will Rogers Elementary, Putnam City, and
at Oakdale School, Edmond and continues to give private art lessons. In 2009 he received the Educator of Year Award from the
Oklahoma Art Education Association. “I have not made a living, I’ve made a life,” he stated.
Retired since 2010, he is currently working with the Edmond Fine Arts Institute and wants to give back to communities and
arts organizations he has worked with. “I will go anywhere to give a day’s work with students. I want to help Fine Arts
communities grow and to help those who can’t afford to have an artist-in-residence come to school,” he said.

NOC Residential Housing Feasibility Study results
presented to Regents at January meeting
The Northern Oklahoma College Board of Regents met Jan. 27 in Enid for their regular scheduled meeting with Chair Lynn
Smith presiding. Other Regents present were Vice-Chair Jeff Cowen, Secretary Rex Horning, members Linda Brown and Keith
James.
After calling the meeting to order, guests Jamie Roberts, NOC Enid softball coach; Kirby Tickel-Hill, alumni relations
director; Bradley Jennings NOC Enid dean of students; Jackie Johnson, NOC instructor and Oklahoma Foundation for
Excellence (OFE) Outstanding Mentor for 2013; Enid student, Sean Islas, Campus Civitan Club Secretary and mentee; and
Greg Ward, senior principal and president, Cyntergy AEC; were introduced.
The Dec. 17 meeting minutes were approved, followed by Regents’ comments, administrative updates and updates from
NOC President Dr. Cheryl Evans.
Dr. Rick Edgington, vice president for enrollment management/registrar, informed the Regents that the spring 2014
preliminary headcount enrollment was up one percent compared to last year, as of Jan. 27.
Ward, representing Cyntergy, attended the meeting to present the findings of a residential housing feasibility study to the
Regents. The study was done to determine the best locations for new student housing on the Tonkawa and Enid campuses.
Ward said, “Conceptual in nature looking at each campus, the purpose of this study is to develop a student housing program
and feasibility study for the future design and construction of a new residence hall facility with amenities which are competitive
with other colleges.”
In Tonkawa, the location recommended is on the east side of Pine Street, just south of the A.D. Buck History Museum and
Welcome Center located on the northeast side of the campus. Ward said, “This site has strong ties to the rest of the campus and
provides easy access to the current dining facilities as well as academic and athletic buildings. This is the most attractive site for
a new residence hall.”
In Enid the recommended site is the space directly north of Earl Butts Residence Hall. Ward said, “Selecting the site in front
of the Earl Butts Residence Halls on the Enid campus allows for a unique way to re-energize the existing housing and is the
most practical site.”
Dr. Evans shared the exciting news that the Washington based Aspen Institute announced that NOC was selected as one of
the top 150 community colleges out of 1,005 potential candidates in the nation and the only one in Oklahoma to be selected.
Northern was included in the top 120 in the two previous Aspen recognition of excellence programs in 2011 and 2013. She also
announced that she had been notified by the governor’s office that Regent Jeff Cowan has been recommended for re-
appointment as an NOC Regent for a five year term beginning July 1, 2014.
Several recommendations were approved by the Regents. They approved the FY2015 academic service fees, 2014 master
lease real property projects for cafeteria and housing renovations on the Enid and Tonkawa campuses, information technology
(IT) print policy for section 12, and the deletion of the music business option of the Associate in Arts in music degree program.
The board also approved the Dec. monthly financial report, monthly purchases of $25,000 or more and Section 13 600/650
allocation requests for various projects.
The next scheduled meeting is set for Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 1 p. m. on the Tonkawa campus in the President’s Boardroom.
Agendas, official minutes, meeting dates and other NOC Board of Regents information can be found on the NOC Website at
www.noc.edu, and then click on “ABOUT NOC,” then “Board of Regents.”
