SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY TRINITY

The very heart of our faith –the mystery of three distinct persons in one God - is proclaimed in our very short scripture readings today. Can you even begin to appreciate each word the Lord uses to describe him-self to Moses? Merciful, gracious, slow to anger, rich in kindness and fidelity. This is how the Lord relates to each one of us. God de-sires that we are ONE with the Father and the Son. God sent Jesus into the world, as human and divine, to live, teach, heal, forgive and model how to love. Jesus promised that his Father would send the Holy Spirit to remind us of all he said. Last Sunday our Church celebrated Pente-cost. The Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples with a mighty wind and fire! Their fear was removed, empowering them with courage to GO OUT into a diverse and broken world and proclaim the Good News in ways people could understand, in ways that awakened them to believe and be baptized by the thousands! By their evangelization and genuine passion, the Church grew to embrace and unify people of all nations, languages, cultures and faiths. As Catholic Christians, we are called to evangelize, each in our own way. Today our Church returns to “Ordinary Time” represented by the liturgical color green. Ordinary time is the day in, day out living of our lives in our homes, our jobs, on our errands, in our relation-ships, and to come to the Table of the Lord often. Most Holy Trinity

Dear Friends of God.

Today we celebrate the feast of the Most Holy Trinity, our belief in the three persons in one God. This article of faith makes no sense to the non-believer but to those of us who have been gifted with our faith, the Trinity is the essence of it even though we cannot really under-stand it.

There is a story that Saint Augustine, one of the brightest of our early church fathers, was walking along the beach trying to unravel the mystery of the three persons in the one God. As he walked along he spied a young boy running back and forth from the seashore to a hole in the sand he had dug. Into that hole he was pouring sea water he had scooped up from the sea in a shell. Augustine observed the lad for a few minutes and then asked him what he was doing. The lad said he was emptying the ocean into his hole. When the saint told him his task was impossible the little boy replied that so was Augustine’s attempt to figure out the Trinity. Then the little boy vanished.

While we can never understand the mystery of the Trinity we can appreciate that the only way God can be Unconditional Love is if He has an object of that love that can be returned to Him. Thus, there must be someone for the Father to have always loved and to have always received back that Unconditional Love. Otherwise there is no possibility of the existence of that Unconditional Love which we know as God.

The real proof of God’s unconditional love for us is that He enfleshed His only begotten Son to become one with us and, therefore, make us all part of Him. Therefore, we become recipi-ents of His unconditional love. All the Trinity asks of us is to reciprocate our love towards Him and His creation. How lucky we are!

God bless.

Dcn. Brian

Book: Rediscover Jesus

Chapter 24: The Gap

We have gaps in our faith life, a sinner, broken relation-ship, prejudices. But God does not expect perfection. We need to look for occasions, relationships, opportunities and work hard at closing those gaps. Avoiding situation that keeps us from healing so as to be closer to Jesus.

GET ON THE BUS

Thank you to all the generous parishioners who contributed $ 1340 to the Get On The Bus program this year. The Social Justice Committee also donated $500 in Sylvia Crawley’s name from our proceeds from the Multi-Cultural Dinner this year for a total of $1840. Sylvia was a devoted volunteer to GOTB and had traveled on several of the busses to both the women’s and men’s prisons. She was so impressed with seeing the joy of families reunited for at least one day. We are giving a child a priceless gift of a vist to a parent that provides a life-time memory. Thank you for your love and generosity to incar-cerated parents and their children.

PEACEMAKERS Peacemakers and Martyrs of Charity Fr. James Martin, SJ, has called the heroes in Portland “Martyrs of Charity.” Remember these names – Taliesin Myrddin Namkai Meche, Ricky Best and Mi-cah David-Cole Fletcher (injured). These men attempted to stop a racist from harming two Muslim girls on a train in Portland, Oregon, and gave their lives as a result. A “Martyr of Charity” is someone who dies while trying to save the life of another or in doing an act of charity.

“No one has greater love than this – to lay down one’s life for a friend.” John 15:13

In a poignant moment at the vigil for the two men who died, the mother of Taliesin who is named Asha, said, “We taught him to love everyone and that is what we all should be doing and that is why we are all here (at the vigil), so give it up for love.” Social Justice Committee

Annual Native American Fundraising Drive

Our parishioners have been so generous in supporting the Na-tive Americans in Shiprock, New Mexico in past years and for that we thank you so much. Recently we have found that other parishes in the area are also helping the Shiprock parishioners. However Sacred Heart parish in South Dakota is in need. We have researched this site with the help of Fr. Mike Carson, our former pastor. Pine Ridge Reservation of the Lakota/Sioux in South Dakota is the poorest reservation in the country. Sacred Heart Catholic Church serves the Pine Ridge Reservation in a number of ways. People come by every day for food and money to help with rent or electricity, especially in winter. Their current needs are for a paved parking lot, community garden, and help for the many poor families. Unfortunately due to recent political changes, they have lost a large grant that was used to help out with the electric and heating costs for the poor.

We ask for your support as we reach out to our native brothers and sisters in South Dakota. We will be accepting donations through the second week of June. Thank you for all your sup-port. Social Justice Committee
