SOCIAL JUSTICE CORNER

A FATHER’S DAY PRAYER

We give you thanks, loving and generous God, for all the fathers in our lives, who have striven to balance the demands of work, marriage, and children with an honest awareness of both joy and sacrifice. While many fathers shine in virtue and love, others fall short. We ask your blessing on them all – and forgiveness where it is needed. Bless all those who have helped fill the void when fathers die early or are absent – grandfathers and uncles, broth-ers and cousins, teachers, priests and coaches – and the women of our families and beyond. We ask your blessing, too, on step-fathers, foster fathers, teenage fathers, those fathers who are refugees, immigrants, imprisoned, divorced or parenting alone. Bless those who are estranged from their children and bring healing to these relationships. Give fathers the wisdom, grace and patience to parent in a loving way. Guide all fathers to be good role models of faith, love, and virtue to their children. Help us, as their children and grandchildren, to honor them with love and respect. We remember those fathers who have died and live on in our memory and whose love continues to nurture us. We ask these prayers in the name of Jesus Christ Our Lord, and in union with St. Joseph, whom you entrusted with Your Son. Amen.

Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

The Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ

My brothers and sisters,

What would happen to your body, if you didn’t eat? Well, you might lose some weight at first, but then your body would begin to break down, and unless you took in some nutrition, you would eventually die.

So what happens when we are not being nourished spiritually?

Today we hear Jesus telling his followers, "I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world."

I can well understand why the Jews were confused by His statements. It is a very difficult teaching, and as you continue reading John 6, you see that many of Jesus' followers left Him, because of it.

But just as God sent manna to sustain His people in the desert, Jesus becomes our spiritual food. Jesus did not come to us, simply to teach us about the Father, but to offer us life with the Father. “Just as the living Father sent me, and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me.”

Today’s gospel is at the very core of what it means to be a Catholic. The Holy Eucharist is both the source, and summit of our faith. This is not merely a symbol of Jesus. It is an invi-tation to life with Him, by partaking of His Body and Blood. It is our spiritual food, con-taining within it the promise of eternal life.

PEACEMAKERS The Catholic Worker House in San Jose, called Casa de Clara, has been helping the poor for decades. Founded by Dorothy Day in New York, the Catholic Worker has been synonymous with social justice. Recently, in addition to housing homeless women and children, Casa de Clara has begun a sandwich min-istry to homeless men and women on the street and in the parks. Volunteers distribute sandwiches and fruit three days a week.

Take some time to speak with your family and let us know if you would be interested in helping with a sandwich ministry here at the parish. It is a concrete way of being helpful to the homeless and should be very easy to accomplish. Call the Margie in the Social Justice Committee – (408) 203-7747

Today we celebrate Casa de Clara and Dorothy Day, peace-makers.
