S ampoerna Strategic Square held the 10th open tournament on Monday March 11,

participated by all 3S tenants. Commencing at 4.30 pm, this annual event featured various sports competition such as table tennis, badminton, futsal, chess, and billiard. M IZSML�Ja�\PM�ÅVIT�ZW]VL�WN �N]\[IT�IVL�

badminton matches, Sampoerna Land held the Closing Tournament Awarding Ceremony on Thursday, April 4. Taking place at the loading LWKS��Q\�_I[�I\\MVLML�Ja�ITT�ÅVITQ[\[�_PW�PIL�competed since March 11, 2019.

The first and second winner from all five sports branches contested in the tournament was announced and awarded by the organizer. Sampoerna Group A became the first winner from billiard, and the second was Credit Suisse. On badminton, athletes of Manulife and Sampoerna Financial Group were chosen as the first and second winner, respectively. Meanwhile, Sampoerna Land and Kopkar SS was declared as the first and runner-up for the sports with most team members, Futsal. FKS got the first place on table tennis while Goku ranked as the second. Lastly, the individual match of chess bestowed La Untung from Sampoerna Land and Alfian from Mami as the first and second champion.

The awarding moment was loaded with so much fun. This annual sport event successfully brought an intimate nuance and togetherness among all Sampoerna Strategic Square tenants.

I believe many of you have been to such Javanese cities as Yogyakarta, Malang, Surabaya,

but I also know that Banyuwangi is not as famous as those aforementioned cities. Banyuwangi, being a city located at the easternmost tip of Java Island,

levels of waves on this beach based on their height, namely Kong Waves with waves reaching 6-8 meters height, the 5-6 meters of Speedis Waves, and Many Track Waves with 3-4 meters. The surfers called the wave at this beach as one of the Seven Giant Waves Wonders.

at the beach, let’s feel the sensation of savanna in Baluran National Park, located partly in the district of Situbondo and partly in the district of Banyuwangi, this park is a forest preservation area that extends about 22,500 hectares. Those who have been to Osaka and Tokyo know that these two are basically apples and oranges.

How Osaka shyly reveals its happy playgrounds as you saunter along from one destination to another is completely different from the experience of swimming against hordes of tired workers in Tokyo rushing for the subways. In fact, it’s so distinct that the moment you leave Osaka, you instantly realize you would never mind going back again and—TWWSQVO�I\�PW_�[QUXTM�J]\�N]TÅTTQVO�TQNM�the residents enjoy—even dare to imagine “what if ” you get a chance to live there. Yet before all that happens, here’s a possible start to a joyful journey.

First Day

1. unIvErsAL sTudIo (MORNING TO AFTERNOON)The Japanese love going to theme

parks. So, before you lose much energy on other destinations, put the only Universal Studio in japan as a priority. Queue up from 8AM; get ready to pay more for the Harry Potter ride, as it’s the only one (no Disneylands have it), and it’s certainly worth the hassle. Tip: Never come to a theme park in Japan during weekends or holidays; you’d be queuing to death.

2. sPA WorLd (LATE AFTERNOON)Freshen yourself up after a day on

public arcades and rides by immersing at a gigantic hot-spring theme park. Here is where you could brush up on your onsen etiquette as well as learning how the Japanese are totally obsessed with hygiene and interiors. In the eight-story building, each facility houses its own design style, from the ancient Roman Jacuzzi to the Finnish bath to the local wooden saunas.

3. doTonBorI & sHInsAIBAsHI (EvENING)After basically two theme parks,

you might as well end your day at a very festive shopping destination. Shinsaibashi is Osaka’s number-one shopping center, offering all things you can think off. When hunger kicks in, next-door Dotonbori has rows and rows of great street foods and ramen kiosks. The goal is not to find the best shop or the finest restaurant, but to really try one thing after another since, well among others, Osaka’s cheaper than Tokyo.

Second Day

4. osAkA CAsTLE (MORNING)While in Osaka, take your time in

appreciating each and every moment. The Osaka Castle, for instance, has a beautiful moat surrounding it and the backyard area where some food stalls reside is nice for a quiet sit in the morning—or a selfie. The castle itself has elevators that may have you shell

out for more. Take the stairs. Enjoy your tour and no need to rush to the top floor, as by then you’ll probably be thinking of going elsewhere.

5. MoMofuku Ando InsTAnT rAMEn MusEuM (LUNCH)Who doesn’t love Japanese ramen?

A free entrance to the museum is just one of the perks. As you explore this unique spot in the Ikeda district, you’ll sooner or later fall in love with Mr. Ando who not only created the first instant noodle but also founded Nissin and the cup noodles. Tip: Try to make your own instant noodle! It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

6. nAMBA YAsAkA-jInjA (AFTERNOON)If you want to have a unique selfie in

Osaka, this temple will help you stand out in the crowd. This Shinto shrine has a staggering monster-like face and mouth in which the altar can be found. Little details like wooden prayer slabs on the side, however, may look similar to those at the many temples in Kyoto.

7. kuroMon ICHIBA MArkET (BEFORE SUNSET TO EvENING)How about fresh Japanese seafood for

dinner? Come down right at the end of the day (before closing at 6PM) and you can hone your bargaining skill. Fret not, there’s a number of hole-in-the-wall around the area that serve delicious but humble dinners. Again, the goal isn’t to sample the finest or most popular in Osaka, but soak in the ambience, appreciate the chef and the dishes. You can walk to some bars next door to call it a day and close the 48-hour trip with a toast among new friends.

O ne of Jokowi’s viral Instagram posts in 2019 touched on the 2030 plan to

crown another city in Indonesia as the capital. This means Jakarta will finally earn its well-deserved break/retirement from bearing that heavy-duty title. At the same time, there are still a round of sexy urban moves—ready to unveil or in the pipeline—that will completely transform the Big Durian to be among the top contenders for global smart cities. And a decade should be more than enough for this messy-but-nice megapolis to reach great expectations.

THE CHECkLIsTA short backstory is that after Sam

Palmisano, ex-CEO of IBM worldwide, popularized the concept of “smart city,” Suhono S. Supangkat from Institut Teknologi Bandung further trickled that down into seven interrelated categories:

Little did people know the government cleverly kickstarted the Jakarta Smart City (JSC) program in late 2014 to seriously take on the giant tasks to make the capital more live-able than before. This commitment has not only come to fruition in some parts, but by 2020 the JSC program will be officially renamed Badan Layanan Umum Daerah (BLUD) with more flexibilities in getting funds for its life-changing initiatives.

Aside from the JSC team, there are government officials and private start-ups joining forces to give Jakarta a second life. Some of their current projects as discussed below can certainly become a point of departure for us, citizens, to imagine what the future looks like in the Big Durian.

A. IntegrAted trAnspOrtAtIOn systemWhat follows after the MRT is

the LRT (Light Rail Transit) that is probably up and running by the time of this newsletter goes to print. The light rail transit is similar to monorails with the speed up to 80km per hour (but unlike MRT with 100km per hour). Although the 2020 map for an integrated transportation system (showing the connections of LRT, MRT, Busway and KRL Commuter) is already published, it might take several years to finish. But all in all, Jakarta is primed for smart mobility by 2030.

B. reAl-tIme CIty mOnItOrIng systemPart of the JSC program is to plant

more than 7,600 CCTVs in the city, accessible to everyone on a real-time basis.

The bigger goal is to have the government monitor all the dirty little secrets: illegal driving and parking on the road, sewage or waterway blockages due to trash, and even possible terrorist threats. C. mOre VertICAl lIVIng And green spACesWith the integrated transportation

system, Sri Mulyani, Minister of Finance, now strongly raises the urgency to build more vertical living spaces (apartments or other high-rise buildings) instead of landed houses. This is to compensate the fact that Jakarta is one of the most populated cities in the world—almost at par with Tokyo. This will consequently cut down the prices of apartments and allow more spaces for parks and public areas. Up to date, Jakarta’s green space is only ten percent of the city’s coverage.

The urban planning rework should be able to bump that percentage up to the 30% plan. Such aggressive smart living strategy in Jakarta was among the reasons that the World Bank recently gave the country, through Bappenas, a loan of US$49.6 million for better urban planning.

d. mOre spendIng On eduCAtIOn And HumAn resOurCeSince last March, Jokowi has

announced the government’s new primary focus to increase the quality of human resources, after the previous effort on infrastructure. Jakarta, being the largest city throughout the archipelago, amasses the highest number of workers. The main issue to tackle, however, is the standard of work skill. Hanif Dhakiri, Minister of Human Resource, once said, “Out of all 131 millions of workers in Indonesia, 58% of them did not pass high schools.” Sri Mulyani took the bulls by the horns as she jacked up the country’s annual

One afternoon in the middle of Ramadhan on May 28, 2019, a cheerful atmosphere that full of warmth came from The Atrium, Sampoerna Strategic Square Building. This event is also included in CSR activities that are routinely held every year.
