President’sMessage

The

from James DiStefano

Good afternoon my dear Sisters and Brothers. I hum-bly stand before you as newly elected State President. I am honored to be standing here as Your State President.

Let me say, I am looking for-ward to working with our newly elected State Council and with all of our fi lial lodges to get us through these tough economic times.

Today, I am putting the new council members on notice. We will work very hard to try and keep our per capita tax at current levels, which means that there will be many sacri-fi ces that we all have to make.As I take the office of State President, I know we must continue what Sister Florence Ferullo Kane has started. The Order continues to change and change, we must.

Let me say, fi rst of all, it’s time for all of us to roll up our sleeves and work together, leave past disagreements behind and start with a clean slate. In order for this to happen, we must be United, we must have Team-work to keep our Order moving forward.

One of our most important goals is Membership. This is not only the Council’s chore. We need all of you to join us in bringing in new members. It’s time to tell your friends and family about this great Order. Teach them about our heritage, our culture, and our language. Tell them of the Great Pride you have in being a member of the Order Sons of Italy in America.

As you may have heard, we have instituted a very aggres-sive program in order to bring our membership level back up to the 10,000 mark and higher.

Communication. At times this is a word some of us seem to have a problem with. In order to keep the lines open between

the Grand Lodge and the Filial Lodges, it is imperative that you communicate back to the Grand Lodge. Keep us informed of your activities, functions, or any problems that we can help you with. Remember, this is your Grand Lodge. We are here for you, and not vice versa.

In this day and age, we Ital-ian-Americans are still plagued with discrimination. The Com-mission for Social Justice both state and national are con-tinually on guard. My dear Sis-ters and Brothers, it’s time to join hands and work together. We must stop discrimination against our nationality and all nationalities. Today’s society has been taught to believe that, we Italian-Americans are all mobsters or Mafia. This so-called Hollywood stereotyp-ing MUST BE STOPPED. Yes, it is time for us to go out and teach our children and our grandchildren the great contri-butions that Italian-Americans have made to our country and the world. It is time to bring back the Great Pride we all have in being Italian-Americans, and being members of this Great Order.

Brothers and Sisters, I have a vision that with Teamwork and pride we can bring Dr. Vincenzo Sellaro’s dream of which he spoke about in 1905, when he founded the Order Sons of Italy in America. I quote:

“That our children, and their children’s children, even if they carry a single drop of Italian blood, will be able and proud to continue to carry, our traditions, our culture, and our language.”

These are but a few issues that we must strive for as members of this Great Order. They can only be accomplished with your help and teamwork. So, I ask all of you, my Sisters and Brothers, let us show the great love and affection we

Italian-Americans have for this great country and for this Great Order of ours.

You, the Delegates, have put together this council, through your votes. I am ready to lead, and the Council is ready to work. Together, with Teamwork, this Order will continue to pros-per into the future.

Before closing, I would be remiss if I didn’t take time to say “Thank You”. Thank you for having faith in me by electing me your State President.

I am truly a Figli d’Italia. I was born in Abruzzi, Italy and I am a proud member of the Watertown Lodge Piave Fiume #1036 for 41 years. I can’t thank my Brothers enough. Thank you Brothers for all the help and support you have given me through the years.

To my mother, Adriana, please stand. I thank you very much for all that you have taught me, family, love, hard work, and respect, and everything you have done for me. Thank you. I love you.

To my son Michael, who will be part of the Council, thank you for your support and keep-ing me in line, and his wife, Maura and my two beautiful grandchildren, Valerie and Mikie, thank you, and Papa loves you.

To Daddy’s little girl, Kim, who is the Financial Secretary of the Belmont Mixed Lodge, Thank you, and I love you.

To my wife, Kathy, please stand, thank you for all your support and sacrifi ces you have made for me over the years and all the sacrifi ces that you will most likely make in the future. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I love you very much.

Thank you all.God Bless you all and God

Bless the Order Sons of Italy in America. Grazie.

Today, as I look around the Con-vention Hall and noting the fact that for twenty (20) years of serving on the Grand Council has been a wonderful and very interesting experience. I have had the privilege of working with many wonderful, thought-ful, caring, and loyal

people. And, today, I would like to personally acknowledge these individuals.

There are three individuals who have been with me from the very beginning of the odys-sey, and it would be diffi cult to truly put into words the encouragement, the hard times I was given so that I might better appreciate the workings of this Great Order. It is my distinct pleasure to thank Dorothy Berlandi, Anthony Panaggio and Patricia Provenzano. Thank You, Thank You.

An active organization consists of dedicated and conscientious leaders, hardworking members and a professional staff; I have been very fortunate the past two years to have all three.

I want to extend special personal thanks to Dominic Campochiaro, the Grand Lodge photographer and Sal Pinzone, the Grand Lodge videographer.

My sincere thanks to our State Offi cers, Chairmen of Commission, State Deputy Chairman, State Deputies, and the Benefi t Insurance Commission. Special Thanks to President of the Benefi t Insurance Commis-sion Walter “Sonny” Robak for his support and cooperation. You are the team respon-sible for our success.

Florence Ferullo Kane’sFAREWELL MESSAGE

to the Members of the Massachusetts Grand LodgeMercurio, thank you for your prayers and spiritual guidance.

To the Offi ce Staff, Evelyn Belmonte and Adriana Guida, a great big thank you.

Paul Guida, our dynamic Executive Direc-tor, an outstanding asset to the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, Thank You. I am very fortunate to be able to share your knowledge and expertise and am greatly appreciative.

Yes, I am proud to say that I made history and became the fi rst woman State President of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts. More importantly, my Brothers and Sisters was my concern for you, the members of the Order Sons of Italy and what concerns you might have.

As we forge ahead, we must be ever mindful of the foundation set forth by our forefathers. Their strong leadership, commitment, and dedication to promoting our Italian heritage and culture have been the stepping-stones to our existence.

If we are to carry on in the footsteps of our predecessors, we must strive with determination, to unite and strengthen our membership.

My dear Brothers and Sisters, what the future holds is up to you. We must stand together UNITED, our success depends upon our UNITY and our shared COMMITMENT of working together.

To our new State President, James DiStefano, I wish you the best. I appreciate everything that you have accomplished on my behalf and as I have told you, I am more than ready to reciprocate.

The Grand Lodge Historical Commission recently held a trip to New York. One bus left from Worcester led by National Secretary Carmelita Bello and the other from Norwood led by Historical Chairman Delia Bartucca.

The group visited the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Ground

Zero and Little Italy. The trip to Ellis Island was

very moving, imagine our par-ents, grandparents coming into this port, not knowing the language or what awaited them. It was Italian Month at Ellis Island which featured coloring and stories for the children and a pizza dough throwing demon-stration.

At fi rst they came on ships and now they come by air, but they all have something in common — an American story, and memories of a journey, a new language, new friends and becoming an American citizen. Each memory includes the names of very special people, names that deserve to be kept alive.

The American Immigrant Wall of Honor at Ellis Island will ac-cept new names to be engraved by the Summer of 2010.

lain of the Order Sons of Italy. Before the program continued, dinner was served. In the background and during dinner the Orchestra Equinox directed by Mr. Jimmy Bono Geaney presented dancing music which many of our guests took advantage of.

After dinner, Brother James DiSte-fano serving as Toastmaster introduced National Past President Philip Boncore, Esq. for a few remarks. Brother Bon-core noted that he was no stranger to the Ferullo Family, as they had grown up in the same neighborhood and he was a friend of the Presidents’ brother. Naturally, we had warned Brother Bon-core that he could not speak over three minutes, because as we all know he can keep us listening for much more than 10 or 15 minutes. He wished Florence much success and thanked her for her commitment to the Order Sons of Italy.

Our next speaker was Luigi Munno, Deputy Consul General, Consulate Gen-eral of Italy who brought greetings from the Consul General Liborio Stellino who could not be present this evening.

Brother DiStefano then introduced Mr. Anthony Panaggio, Jr., Treasurer of the Benefi t Insurance Commission for remarks and presentation. Brother Panaggio congratulated President Kane for keeping her commitment given at a Leadership Meeting, and that there was no doubt in his mind that she was a dedicated, tireless worker, and that she has done more for the Order with her deep love, dedication, and hard work.

Ms. Renee Farrell represented the Ferullo Family; she is President Kane’s niece. Ms. Farrell spoke very eloquently about her Aunt, reiterating her love for not only the Order Sons of Italy but also her family, and extended family.

The young and newly elected Presi-dent of the Winthrop Mixed Lodge 2057, Joseph Boncore, Esq. representing the Lodge that President Kane is a member of was proud to know that President Florence Ferullo Kane was a member of the Winthrop Mixed Lodge. He spoke of the friendships, as they too had been a part of her life as they were growing up.

Toastmaster, Co-Chair James DiSte-fano asked the Testimonial Committee to please stand as he read their names to thank them for their help and profes-sionalism. This committee went above and beyond in not only suggesting but also actually doing more than was ex-pected of them.

The Reverend Charles Bourke, Pastor of St. John the Evangelist Parish noted

Committee for the State President’s Testimonial — Seated, left to right: President of the Benefi t Insurance Commission Walter “Sonny” Robak, Cathy DiStefano, State 1st Vice President & Chairman James DiStefano, State President Florence Ferullo Kane, National 3rd Vice President & Chairman Dorothy Berlandi, State Orator Tony Sestito and National Recording Secretary Carmelita Bello. Standing, left to right: Chairman of Organization & Education Stephen Cozzaglio, Treasurer of the Benefit Insurance Commission Anthony Panaggio, Jr., Chairman of Scholarship Patricia Provenzano, State Trustee Mary Ann Bello, Chairman of Historical Delia Bartucca, Ollie, State Trustee Lisa Luther, State Trustee Ron Hill, Recording Secretary of the Benefit Insurance Commission Cathy Bourassa, Armand Bourassa, Mary Lou Abbatessa, Carol and Angelo Rossi and Executive Director Paul Guida.

that State President Kane is not only a communicant and a Eucharist minister at the church but manages to help in functions to raise funds for many causes within the Parish.

National 3rd Vice President Dorothy Berlandi described her twenty or more year friendship with President Kane as more like the team of Lucille Ball and Ethel Mertz. She noted that their friend-ship has been built on trust, honesty, and love for the Order Sons of Italy. Sister Dorothy personally congratulated State President Kane and wished her success in her future endeavors.

1st Vice President and Testimonial Co-Chair James DiStefano thanked State President Kane for all her help and guidance and noted that he would defi nitely be seeking her help during his administration.

The guest speaker was National Past President, and National President Emeri-tus of the Sons of Italy Foundation Paul S. Polo. Brother Polo congratulated State President Kane on the state level that she well represented Massachusetts, and on the National level there was much she accomplished in committees and on her commitments. He praised her for her integrity and her love for the Order Sons of Italy.

Brother Polo presented State Presi-dent Kane with a Scholarship for $1000 in her name from National Officers, Brother Paul Polo, Foundation President Robert Messa, 1st National Vice Presi-dent Joseph DiTrapani, National Past President Vincent Sarno and Executive Director Philip Piccigallo.

State President Florence Ferullo Kane then responded to all with the fol-lowing speech. I can’t begin to tell you how honored I am with this outstand-ing testimonial. Thanks to National 3rd Vice President Dorothy Berlandi and 1st Vice President James DiStefano who have worked with their committee to make this a special evening and a resounding success. Thank You!

As I look back I question myself with “Where did the years go?” This is already the end of my second year as State Presi-dent. However, I feel that my holding the position of 1st Vice President for eight years, I have no doubt in my mind that I already have served two – two year terms as a State President.

When I took the oath of offi ce two years ago, I stated that it wasn’t the fact of being the fi rst woman State President; it was what I could do for you my brothers

Ferullo Family — Left to Right: Brother Patrick Ferullo, State President Florence Ferullo Kane, Sister Angela Farrell, Brother Allan Ferullo and Sister-in-law Barbara Ferullo.

Friends enjoying the evening.

and sisters throughout Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. And, yes, I have traveled through these regions visiting lodges, being visible, bringing the messages of help to a distressed lodge, helping to initiate new lodges, and keeping alive the message of our founder Dr. Vincenzo Sellaro. And that is to keep alive the culture, language, art, and helping one another for that is all part of our great heritage.

I have served on the Council for well over twenty years and have upheld and fulfi lled the responsibility of the offi ces I held. We would all do well to remember that when you take an offi ce you should take those duties on responsibly, and not take it on unless you are qualifi ed and ready to make a commitment.

At State Conventions I ventured into doing something different, by using workshops of the various Commis-sions. The Italian Culture Commission did a Workshop on Venetian Mask Making. The Organization and Education Commission combined with Membership presented the proper manner to hold an Installation. And the Membership Commission held an open forum on methods of increasing our Membership. These work-shops helped to make the Convention more interesting and had all delegates participating.

The Convention for 2009 will be held in a few weeks and there are many new and exciting events happening. On Italian Night there will be a wine tasting, liqueur making and fun entertainment. Please, even if you are not a delegate, join us at the Radisson in Nashua, New Hampshire.

Also during my tenure we were able to work with other Italian Organizations, such as the Italian-Amer-ican Heritage Committee, where I also serve on the Board. I am a proud member of the following Italian organizations, Pirandello Lyceum, Dante Alighieri, and the Calabrese Society.

The Order Sons of Italy was honored to host and sponsor with the Consul General of Italy; Sicilian Crossings, at the Boston Public Library and also to sponsor Italy and the Holocaust working along with Dr. Maria Lombardo who conducted a conference at UMass in Boston. This shows that ALL the various organizations working together defi nitely make a dif-ference. I am proud to be an Italian/American.

As President of the Knights of Don Orione, I am proud to have been their fi rst woman President for now over fi ve years working alongside my brothers on that Board. We must not lose sight of continuing to help the Don Orione with their Capital Campaign for the renovations of the East Wing, making it more comfortable for the residents.

When we become members of the Order we acquire another Family. I have been very fortunate, for I do have a very large extended family within the Order. A Past State President, who is no longer with us Henry Frissora, encouraged me to move forward, he placed his confi dence in me and guided me along the way. This was the start of a long journey, and I know that tonight he is smiling down and enjoying this Testimo-nial very much.

What can I say about the Benefi t Insurance Trea-surer, Anthony Panaggio, he is like a brother, a friend and my Campaign Manager. Another individual who helped me, National 3rd Vice President Dorothy Berlandi

treated me not only as a friend, but more like a daughter. We not only have worked together, but also have traveled many miles together.

When we speak about friend-ships, I believe I am most for-tunate in that I not only have friends on the State level, but also on the National level. There are two outstanding brothers over the twenty years who al-ways took time out to be there for me, Past National President and Past Foundation President Paul Polo, and Past State Presi-dent Michael Polo. So you see, I have been very fortunate to be blessed with such a family.

President Kane then continued with the closing of her speech.

“I would be remiss if I did not mention my parents, Gloria and Pasquale Ferullo. They were the individuals who taught me, showed me the way, how to share, how to give from the heart, how to become involved, how to be committed. Yes, if it wasn’t for the guidance I received from my Mother I would not be standing here this eve-ning. She encouraged me to continue onward and it was her dream that I become the 1st Woman President in Massachusetts. I believe that I have accomplished this dream for both my Mother and Father.

I now look forward to the next administration where I will be sitting as an Immediate Past President, and I promise that I will be committed to working with the new State President.

Again, I thank you all for sharing this evening with me and my family and thank you for this great honor.

1 pound medium shrimp (cleaned and deveined)5 cloves chopped garlic3 tablespoons margarine or butter2 tablespoons olive oil2 tablespoons chopped parsley

In a skillet, over low heat, melt margarine or butter and add olive oil. Add chopped garlic. Simmer slowly, careful not to brown garlic. Remove skillet from heat. Slowly add clam juice. Return to heat and add cleaned shrimp. Stir and cover to simmer slowly until all shrimp turn pink (about ten to fi fteen minutes). Add wine or sherry and parsley to this broth and cover. Simmer to a boil and then remove from heat. Set aside. Reheat if necessary before serving.

For cooking linguine, follow directions on the package. When pasta is cooked, strain and place pasta in a large serving bowl. Add shrimp broth and stir. Serve linguine in individual bowls topped with shrimp and grated cheese of choice. Place additional broth and shrimp on table for guests.

OPTIONAL: To serve as hors d’oeuvres: Prepare shrimp as mentioned above. Place the prepared Shrimp Scampi in a serving bowl on your table, adding a serving spoon for the guests to help themselves. Also have available plates, forks, and napkins. Garlic bread and/or crackers go well with the hors d’oeuvre.

NOTE: This easy-to-prepare recipe is one of my Brother Peter’s specialties that became a favorite in my home. In the l950s and 60s Peter developed great enthusiasm for cooking. That is when I learned to prepare his Shrimp Scampi. I believe Peter and I inherited Mama’s eagerness and joy to try new recipes, hoping always to please the appetite of family and friends.

On Saturday, August 15th, a number of wonderful commu-nity people have joined in what is promised to be a gala Fashion Show in support of the Winthrop Ladies Lodge Scholarship and Charitable programs. They say that non-profi ts will need to fi nd unimagined ways to meet mis-sion goals and the ladies believe they have. Project Runway will see fashions by Marshall’s of Saugus along with Winthrop’s very own Entertainers bringing fun and festivities to the show.

Starring in the day’s perfor-mance will be Senator Anthony Petruccelli and his lovely family; Town Council members, Joseph Ferrino and Linda Calla; Carla and Sofi a Vitale; Richard Ho-nan; John and Trudy Macero; Stephanie Locke and daughter Alana; Bette Federico; Nancy Williams; ‘Chuckie’ Famolare; Chief, Paul Flanagan; Bobby Lukas and more. mother, Josephine Volpe, who lived to be 100 years old, his parents John and Ann Pac-etti, then came Bob Pacetti, followed by his two daughters, Christine and Liz, who is also a Past Recording Secretary, his nephew and most recently his son-in-law Andy Roy.

Bob also said that although an honor, becoming Presi-dent of a Lodge is not an easy task. To be an effective President you must properly plan, pre-pare and make yourself aware of what is going on and some-times make tough decisions. The key is to “Plan, Plan, Plan.” To accomplish these goals you have to keep the mem-bers interest and get them in-volved. Bob asked for everyone’s assistance by volunteering to be on committees, giving their input and ideas, stressing the importance of everyone’s in-volvement for a Lodge to pro-mote the enrichment of the

Lodge by making positive things happen.

President Bob ended by of-fering his leadership, direction and guidance, promising to serve in a courteous and pro-fessional manner and continue his dedication and responsibil-ity, always striving for the best interest, especially of our local Lodge and membership and the advancement of this great Order.

President Bob is hoping to serve as a role model, perform-ing his duties with dignity and humility, always representing our Lodge in a positive and honorable manner. He ended by thanking everyone for their kindness and the warmth of their friendship and said, “It is a pleasure and privilege to know you. I am humbled and honored to once again be your President. I appreciate your encourage-ment and continued support.” “God Bless You.”Madonia, Frances Mercadante,

President Bob Pacetti gave an inspiring speech, stating that our Lodge #169 was instituted on October 1, 1913, even before the Grand Lodge of Massachu-setts, which was established in 1914. This is something to be proud of and cherish. He also paid tribute to our deceased members and mentioned a few of our Past Presidents: his Dad, John Pacetti, Sr., Joseph DiPri-ma, Santo Sciabarrasi, Joseph Capodagli, Peter Michaelian, Bill Giadone and former Mayor

Peter Levanti, saying “It is because of these dedicated individuals that our Lodge grew and prospered to what it is today. Bob also outlined his goals for the coming year, asking each member to bring in one new member. To do this he gave an example about how his own interest in the Sons of Italy began, by hear-ing his Dad, John Pacetti, passionately speaking about the Order. This is one way of sparking the interest of the younger generation. We need our youth. They are our future. He also mentioned that four generations in his family joined the Sons of Italy, beginning with his Grand-
