strong global Industry supports IPEX2010IpEx 2010 continues to attract an impressive line up of existing and new exhibitors – a sign that exhibitors view the event as a key part of their 2010 sales and marketing strategy. The latest companies to confirm their attendance include printing press manufacturer KBA with 777 square metres, Up Group, Optimus and Zechini. All major industry players, covering the complete print production process, are

currently represented on the floorplan. The large number of new exhibitors, including Mitsubishi Paper, Océ, OKI Printing Solutions, Olympus, Ricoh, and Scodix reflects the status of Ipex as an international launch pad to the graphic arts industry. To help its exhibitors during the current challenging global trading conditions,

the Ipex organisers are putting in place some ‘Recession Buster’ initiatives to help keep operational costs down and find cost-effective accommodation during the showThe new Performance Index initiative, a free-of-charge consultative service

launched by IIR will further help exhibitors to achieve a strong ROI by identifying and prioritising exhibitors’ show objectives and evaluate how well these have been achieved by providing precise measurable results. The Ipex 2010 organiser has also confirmed that it will reignite the successful

Springboard feature for small first-time exhibitors who have previously found the cost of exhibiting to be prohibitive. Launched in 2006, the spur to attract small firms had come from visitors. Comments Trevor Crawford, Ipex 2010 Event Director: “With increased pressure

to deliver a strong ROI, explore new markets, make news sales and cement existing relationships, suppliers of all sizes around the world know that Ipex is the sales and marketing opportunity they can trust to deliver.”He continues: “We’re in constant dialogue with our exhibitors and understand

that business is tough right now so we’re trying to provide as much support as possible. To date, we’ve successfully held exhibitor roadshows in The Netherlands, Germany and China with further plans to hold future events in France, Japan, Italy, the UK, the US and India. These events are designed to update our exhibitors on our international reach and gain their support for our co-marketing strategy which has been extremely well received.”Ipex 2010’s new, later dates have been greeted enthusiastically by the industry.

In addition, locating the exhibition solely within the new halls around the Atrium to mirror the complete print production process, which is accessible via one main approach into the Atrium, simplifies navigation and makes it much more likely that visitors will get to see all the companies they plan to.Concludes Trevor Crawford: “The Ipex visitor is able to look at everything from

content creation to output, across the print, publishing and media industries. Ipex fully reflects the continuously evolving nature of our industry so it makes perfect economic sense to visit the show where you can view all the latest technology available in every area. Even if your budgets today don’t allow you to invest in the very latest models, you can also include a visit to UPEX@IPEX , the dedicated area of the exhibition devoted to used printing equipment.“Ipex 2006 welcomed over 100,000 visitors over the course of the eight days.

40% of attendees came from overseas covering over 159 countries – more than any other Graphic Arts exhibition before. I’m confident that with everything on offer at Ipex, we will build on this success.”www.ipex.otg

It will also ensure that service levels remain high as Roland DG Ireland seeks to maximise its share of the market.Said Jerry Davies, Managing Director, Roland DG

(UK): “Roland DG Ireland’s customer base has grown to the extent that its requirements will be better served by a higher level of dedicated service and support, which is exactly what it will get as a result of

DG has a strong claim to being the market leader in Ireland, with an install base numbering in the thousands. MORgANA BAttERy PROVIDEs FINIsHINg POWER FOR MODTHE Design and Print Department of the MOD’s training establishment at Worthy Down, Hants. has installed a complete digital finishing section based on Morgana equipment supplied through Infotec.Head of Department, Steve Allcock,

chose the Morgana kit as part of a complete overhaul of his printing section, which also included the purchase of new colour and black and white Infotec print engines. “I wanted the flexibility of near-line finishing”, he explained, “with equipment that would give us ease of use over the broadest possible spectrum of functions.”Following a visit by Steve and

other members of his 7-strong team to Morgana’s Milton Keynes HQ, the equipment chosen includes a DocuMaster complete finishing system, a DigiCoater micro-format UV coater, a KB 2000 perfect binder and an EBA 551 programmatic guillotine. The DocuMaster exemplifies the

multi-functional capability Worthy Down needed, as it offers complete bookletmaking capability at 1440/hr. with the option of stand-alone creasing and perforating and, with its square back facility, providing finished training manuals that could be packed in half the number of boxes previously required. The KB 2000 is particularly

suited to perfect binding of digital output and could take work from more than one machine, while the EBA 551 with its programmatic capability was a replacement for an earlier and less sophisticated guillotine.Steve Allcock sees the DigiCoater u.v.

coater -supplied with a Morgana 8000

feeder as a piece of equipment that will broaden the scope of the department’s operation as well as improving the quality and durability of a wide range of work. He is looking to use u.v. coatings on 80% of work that is currently laminated and expects to make huge time savings on jobs such as security passes, which are

simple to print but need time to laminate and considerably longer to trim. “On jobs like this”, Steve reckons, “what used to take hours – and even days – can be reduced to minutes.”For further information contact: Morgana systems ltd, tel: 01908 608888

stramongate chooses Canon inagePress C600VP

CANON UK announced that Stramongate Press has taken its first steps into digital production print with the installation of a Canon imagePRESS C6000VP. The Kendal-based company, first formed from a management buyout by six employees in 1986, moved to its present site in 1993 after converting a former snuff factory. A ten-strong team work at Stramongate Press

operating five Heidelberg presses in addition to its new Canon imagePRESS C6000VP. The company, printing a wide range of products from greetings cards to brochures and catalogues, is aiming to use the digital capability to build on growing demand for short-run colour prints and personalised direct mail brochures.Peter Hartley, Managing Director, Stramongate Press

said, “We first saw the Canon imagePRESS C6000VP back in 2008 at drupa and were very impressed. We have seen a huge increase in requests for digital work over the last few years but up until now we have been outsourcing digital print jobs. We looked at several devices on the market but as our first step into digital print this was by far the best choice for us. Canon demonstrated, at an early stage, exceptional levels of customer service, which was vital to us in our first foray into digital printing. “Canon were not interested in just selling us the

hardware, but have offered full support through Canon’s Essential Business Builder Program to provide us with the knowledge and tutorials we need to make digital printing a success. We are already looking to attend the ‘Selling Digital Print’ workshop and others in the future.” The Canon imagePRESS production colour range

has sold over 100 units in the UK since its launch in the UK in 2007. A maximum media supply of 10,000 sheets from up to eight different sources can be configured on the Canon imagePRESS C6000VP device – potentially delivering over two hours of uninterrupted production printing.Trevor Dodsworth, Head of Professional Print, Canon

UK said, “We are delighted that Stramongate chose Canon to help with its move into digital print. Our Canon imagePRESS digital print technology offers them the flexibility to bring current digital work in-house, as well as taking on more short-run or specialist jobs, such as full personalisation and variable data printing, something that previously Stramongate have been unable to do on its litho presses. mONDI, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of paper and packaging, has received confirmation that Color Copy, its brand of colour laser paper, remains the benchmark leader in total print quality according to the latest FOGRA test. FOGRA, the Graphic Technology Research Association, was asked to objectively measure papers in terms of digital laser printing quality concerning print density, image sharpness and toner fixing. The results are included in the Color Copy benchmark study for 2009. Color Copy, is produced at the Mondi Neusiedler

mills in Theresienthal and Kematen, Lower Austria. Working together with the marketing and technical customer service team, the mill investigated areas for further optimisation in great detail and after a number of trials on the paper machine, a new benchmark study of the adjusted quality was initiated with FOGRA. The resulting 2009 benchmark confirms an improvement in specific areas and reaffirms Color Copy’s position in total print quality for colour laser papers. The Color Copy benchmark includes the 12 most

important paper grades in 100 gsm especially designed for colour printing and copying. Tests were conducted on different critical digital colour laser machines from leading manufacturers. Four specific areas were analysed in determining the overall ranking: print quality, runnability, appearance, and physical properties. In terms of print quality, one explicit area of focus

for Mondi in 2009 was image sharpness, which was

improved via optimised surface treatments of Color Copy. This was a significant improvement as it also directly resulted in Color Copy ranking first by FOGRA in terms of total print quality. “The first impression is the most important – also in terms of printing. At Mondi we pay very close attention to the formula that enables the best possible colour printing result. This includes a special surface treatment, optimal conductivity as well as precisely determined smoothness of the paper. Together these attributes enable optimal adhesion of the toner and result in brilliant print reproduction with Color Copy,” explains Abhijit Ghosh, technical consultant and colour laser expert. Regarding physical properties (stiffness,

smoothness and opacity) as well as runnability, which is a must for trouble-free machine performance, Color Copy is clearly a top performer in the benchmark. For buyers and end-users,

appearance plays a major role and Color Copy achieved the best ranking. Toner fixing was also further optimised to suit advanced polymer toner technology in digital colour machines. “We are very

pleased with the results of the Color Copy 2009 benchmark. Being ranked number one reflects our dedication to innovation and

the continuous improvement of Color Copy and enables us to retain our position as the leader in colour laser papers,” explains Mark Ushpol, Sales & Marketing Director, Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper. “We are also very pleased that our entire Color Copy portfolio is now FSC certified, which also underlines our commitment to achieving our sustainability goals and ensure future success.” www.mondigroup.com

kIp, the specialist supplier of wide-format digital reprographic systems, with it’s UK subsidiary based in Daventry, Northamptonshire, has just picked up the prestigious Bertl’s Best Award for the world’s fastest wide format full colour printer – their KIP Color 80. The KIP Color 80 took the Best Wide

Format High Volume Colour Production Printer Award in the 2009 awards. The judges identified it as ‘a very competitive system with a quick return on investment for mid-to-high-volume printing needs’ and described it as ‘a

solid and high-quality production system that is designed for performance, easy maintenance and serviceability.’ The KIP Color 80 has raised the bar

when it comes to production printing of wide format colour prints, whether for posters, CAD, business graphics or GIS, the KIP Color 80 is designed to meet the challenge of the higher volume colour print output. Uniquely in its field it can also produce mono CAD output at a cost broadly in line with conventional toner based systems so bringing immense versatility as well as high production.

With a continuous output speed of 200 square metres per hour regardless of image coverage it makes short work of large production runs. The KIP Color 80 brings a level of automation you would expect from a production speed wide format plain paper solution. On-line full folding is available running

at full engine speed automatically producing A4 packets from all A sized CAD prints, whilst for graphic prints a flat stacking facility is provided. As it is toner based it is already UV

stable and heat and water resistant and so can be mounted indoors and outdoors or laminated with complete confidence. The Color 80 addresses many of the

issues of colour imagery, the cost of production is reduced, allowing print professionals to increase their margins. Print productivity is huge and totally predictable regardless of coverage, allowing a greater throughput and the ability to budget more accurately. The system is automated, reducing the need and cost of manual intervention. The Color 80 prints on to many different types of media including regular bond paper, blue back paper and a range of specialised media all of which are instantly dry on delivery. According to KIP’s MD Chris Hill, “I

am delighted that the KIP Color 80 has won this award, as I believe it is truly revolutionary, this level of output coupled with a return on investment measured in months not years makes this product an easy choice for print shop owners and corporate decision makers. For any print shop or bureau, the

ability to produce the equivalent of 28,000 A0 colour, or mixture of colour and mono prints per month at a lower cost and in a fraction of the time it would take using existing systems, is a very strong business proposition. You can’t predict the type of work customers will bring you, but as the Color 80’s productivity is unaffected by coverage, content or colour that’s no longer an issue. Mono or colour CAD plots, business graphics and full colour posters all print at the same speed, so profitability increases while customer waiting time decreases. Whilst the cost of mono output on

other colour systems on the market tends to be high, with the Color 80 any mono work can also be delivered at a competitive price, enabling collated sets of mixed colour and mono CAD output to be produced on the one device with significant space and labour savings”. KIP ltd: 01327 304612

CANON UK have announced the key findings of the most comprehensive study of corporate reprographics departments (CRD), or in-plants, ever conducted. The new Canon-commissioned research has put the CRD market under the spotlight to provide relevant information to help internal print services meet the needs of their “customers” in a more creative and productive manner and also provide comparative benchmarks, trends for future planning, and a vision for expansion.Under the guidance of Professor

Emeritus Frank Romano, a team of print media graduates from the Rochester Institute of Technology interviewed almost 700 CRD/in-plant managers, print buyers and industry observers from December 2008 to February 2009. The result – Corporate Reprographics: Trends and Opportunities – is a comprehensive freeze-frame of the corporate reprographics market as it is today, and the researchers’ predictions based on trend analysis and computer modeling.Mark Lawn, European Marketing

Manager, Professional Solutions Strategic Marketing, Canon Europe, says: “Aligned to Canon’s corporate philosophy of Kyosei, our focus for the professional print market has been on developing long-term relationships with our customers to help them grow and develop their businesses. A key building block of that success was the first Canon Insight Report, published in June 2008, which explored the changing commercial print landscape and delivered substantial intelligence that enabled us to engage more effectively with our customers. “With this new report, we’re now

demonstrating our commitment to the CRD market by replicating the significant investment we made in commercial

print market research. Corporate Reprographics: Trends and Opportunities delivers an equally insightful snapshot of the CRD market and the key issues they face and, in combination with our own CRD research, has helped us to refine our strategy to better support organisations in increasing the business performance of their CRDs.”The key findings of the Insight report

include the following:•CRDssavetheirorganisationsan

average of 15% of the cost of outside printing; some could save up to 30% if they operated more efficiently.

•Theamountofprintworkcompletedin-house by CRDs over the past decade has grown significantly by 20%, an increase largely driven by the improved capability of the digital printer, which has replaced the offset press as the primary in-plant reproduction technology. The report predicts that, by 2012, less than 30 percent of CRDs will use offset printing at all.

•Althoughhistoricallymonochromeprinting dominated in-house work, volumes are declining. Colour printing, however, has increased due to the use of charts, graphs and images. The volume of full-colour pages produced by CRDs is now equal to that of monochrome pages.

•Expandingbinderyoptionsofferamajor opportunity for CRDs to grow because the value of a printed product is in its finishing.

• In-plantwideformatprintingisgrowingin use to produce posters, trade show exhibits, banners and other signage – in 1998, not a single CRD offered this; in 2008, 65.8% did.

•CRDsneedtoconductmorefrequentbench-marking to quantify their value to their parent companies. Nearly 50% of those surveyed do not regularly

benchmark their performance, citing that this is only done as needed. Over 15% never benchmark.

•ThegrowthoftheInternethashada major impact on CRD operations - over 65% of files (and growing) were submitted online in 2008, a major shift from the paper based workflow of a decade ago. Many CRDs have implemented a Web-to-Print solution to take advantage of the reduction in errors in order submission and most state that Web-to-Print has either exceeded or far exceeded their expectations. Similarly, over half of the CRDs with a Web presence reported an ‘excellent’ level of internal customer satisfaction – customers prefer the efficiency and ease of ordering print via the Web.

•CRDsareadoptingdigital’s‘killerapplication’, variable data printing (VDP), but doing so slowly. While 94.1% of the survey had a VDP solution, in many cases it had come as part of the package with the digital front end, and was considered as being more complicated than it needed to be. On average, therefore, only 27% of CRDs are using VDP regularly.

•Printschedulesarebecomingtighter, with an increased demand for turnaround within 24 hours or less.

Nevertheless, according to the report CRDs are optimistic about their future, with almost 90% expecting to maintain or increase the volume of print produced in-plant. It concludes that efficiencies in automation and workflow offered by digital printing, combined with online ordering, will maximise customer satisfaction and cost savings. One of the most important findings of

the report however is that in order to implement this strategy, it recommends

CRDs should look to train their staff, re-brand themselves as a ‘communication facilitator’ to their companies, and add further value to their services by providing more finishing and wide-format printing options. Lawn says, “Despite the fact that

90% of organisations view print as ‘critical’ and allocate budgets to CRDs of over 2% of turnover, surprisingly the report comments that the CRD is often neglected in terms of management attention so that senior management are not clear about its true value. The report also tells us that, although more print is produced in-plant today than a decade ago thanks to the increase in capability of the digital printer, 50% is still being outsourced, usually because the work is too complex for the CRD or the schedule is too tight.“With the very existence of CRDs

being dependent on their ongoing ability to maintain or increase their value to their customers by meeting their quality and service demands, CRDs need to up their game in two main areas – service and efficiency. Some CRDs are missing opportunities because they haven’t moved as far as commercial printers in understanding the needs of their internal customers and responding with value-added services – the CRDs surveyed admit that over 50% of ideas for new services come from suppliers. By fully automating their workflows, other CRDs will also be able to handle higher volumes and more complex jobs. Through a combination of high performance digital production presses, workflow solutions and a tailored business development service, we’re quietly confident that we’re ideally positioned to address the needs of CRDs and help them to improve their business performance.”

Creating new solutions

CRDs need to become ‘communications facilitators’ of the future, says Canon report

A new flagship qualification will allow 14 to 19 year olds to study vocational courses in print and graphic design while still in school and college. The Diploma in Manufacturing and

Product Design (MPD), which is being introduced in 28 areas around England from September, will allow students to gain accredited qualifications in print and graphic printmaking as an alternative to studying GCSEs or A-Levels.The choice of qualifications, known as

Additional or Specialist Learning (ASL), has recently been released ahead of launch and is intended to complement the study of core principles relevant to all manufacturing sectors by offering clear progression routes into the industry.

Neil Robinson, who has led the development of the Diploma in MPD on behalf of print industry sector skills council

Proskills, said: “The Diploma in MPD is a response to the long-standing complaint from industry that young people are leaving education without the practical skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the workplace.“Its main purpose is to give young

people a sound understanding of what manufacturing is in an applied, real-life context. The core topics cover product design, materials science, production systems and business and management, and it also pays close attention to ‘employability’ skills like communication, numeracy and ICT, as well as ‘soft’ skills such as critical thinking and team work.“The intention is also to give students

an education they can actually use,

which will stand them in good stead in the workplace. So the ASL requirement has been developed to allow students to pick from a wide range of existing, recognised qualifications, be it something specific to a particular sector or to a particular manufacturing theme, or on a different topic altogether, for example a modern language, which could be useful to them. This offers students the widest possible choice of future paths, preparing them for further academic study in college or university, and gives them the chance to gain qualifications that will be recognised in the workplace if they choose to seek a job or further vocational training through an apprenticeship or similar.” The Diploma in MPD has been

developed by employers working with the five manufacturing sector skills councils – Proskills, Improve, Cogent, Semta, and Skillfast-UK. Employers will play a central role in its delivery, working as part of consortia, or partnerships, with school and colleges. Their role will range from offering work placements to assisting with project topics to assisting with teachers’ Continuing Professional Development. The ASL list includes Level 2 and Level

3 Certificates in Printing and Graphic Communications awarded by City & Guilds and ABC’s Level 3 Certificate in Graphic Printmaking. The catalogue of ASL options will be added to and adapted over time to reflect changes in vocational qualifications and training. For a full guide to the Asl options available, visit the website for the Diploma in Manufacturing and Product Design, at www.manufacturingdiploma.co.uk.

NEW DIPlOMA OFFERs PRINt COuRsEs IN sCHOOls

TOO often we hear the criticism that the current government skills and funding system doesn’t deliver against the disparate needs of the Printing Industry – the wrong sort of training provision or delivery solution, and complex funding rules and processes that seem to preclude rather than include. As a result this is frequently the reason given for not training. But is this viable in today’s economic climate where advanced skills are required to ensure business growth and even survival? There are two ways you can deal with this; either continue to voice your disapproval, disappointment and even disillusionment with the system or get actively involved and do something about it and now is the time to do just that!.

Proskills UK represents the interests of the Printing Industry to government. As your Sector Skills Council, they are your voice on all skills related issues to our ‘cabinet’ decision makers. They are responsible for ensuring that the current skills and funding system delivers against the needs of printers; they develop the standards and qualifications that your employees undertake; they research the needs and trends of your industry and articulate these into training solutions.

Proskills, as an employer-led organisation needs employers from this industry to get involved and to work with them to help shape the future of the Printing Industry. By ensuring the right skills platform is in place and the right framework exists to

support skills investment, Proskills works towards ensuring the sustainability of the Printing Industry.

“We need more printers to work with us; their input is critical to our success. And there are two ways that employers can get involved. Our Print Industry Board is one way; our Standards and Qualifications Reform Group another. Or you can be involved in both.” says Richard Moore, the new Industry Lead for the Printing Industry at Proskills. “To date we have a membership of over 20 employers on our Industry Board that come from a range of different sized businesses. But in real terms, they only represent a small fraction of the industry that comprises around 11,000 businesses and employs around 145,000. To ensure a more complete coverage and ever more influential input, we need more printers to get involved in the work we do.”

The Print Industry Board helps set the strategic direction for Proskills. Made up of employers in the main and supported by representatives from employer bodies, trade unions as well as training providers, their task is to ensure that the objectives and solutions developed by Proskills and the National Skills Academy for Materials, Production & Supply, the new directional delivery arm of Proskills, remain fully aligned to the needs of the industry. Proskills Print Industry Board plays a direct role in influencing training provision and is effectively the skills sounding board for the Printing Industry.

With a business cycle that is closely linked to the level of economic activity, the Printing Industry has often been referred to as the bellwether for the UK economy. Of all the industries represented by Proskills, the Printing Industry has possibly the greatest need to develop skills in line with changing technologies and working practices, requiring high levels of operational, technical and managerial skills. The role of the Standards and Qualifications Reform is to develop and review new and existing standards and qualifications to meet the increasing demands of business and as such play a key role in ensuring the right training provision is in place to support investment in skills.

Proskills is looking for new membership to both the Industry Board and the Standards and Qualifications Reform Group. Are you passionate about your industry? Do you want to do something for your industry? If you want to be a voice that counts, then contact Richard Moore at Proskills on 07910 247734 or email him at [email protected]. Richard will be happy to discuss the role of each group with you in more detail, including expectations on your time commitment and the benefits of membership. And if you are just looking for more advice on training and skills funding, then call the Proskills dedicated hotline on 01235 432 032. Mention CsN and they will be happy to hear from you.

18 SUMMER SIZZLER

HAvINg sAID THAT, it is important to remember the old cliché – “You

get what you pay for”. It is perhaps tempting to a newcomer (in particular) to the trade to buy one of the cheaper presses on the market. But as in almost every other circumstance, it is a false economy. It’s like comparing a Trabant to a Mercedes. They both do the same thing. But I know which one I would rather drive. And in a few years time, I bet the Mercedes would still be a great drive, but I would also bet that the Trabant won’t. Neither will you have many breakdowns or

problems, and getting spare parts is straightforward! It’s the same with a heat press. Before you buy, check (a) that it is really CE approved (b) Can the supplier provide spare parts? (c) Does the supplier have a repairs department? (d) What is the warranty? And (e) Are they a long established, reputable business? After all, you are depending upon this

piece of equipment to generate income, and the last thing you will want or need, is a heat press that is unreliable. Your customer will not be sympathetic to your problem – so, buy with care.

THE HIsTORyThe heat transfer press first started to appear years ago in the days when there were still independent sports shops and dedicated t-shirt shops. They were used to apply letters and numbers to sports clothing (primarily football shirts), and to create “on-the-spot” personalised t-shirts for customers while they waited. They removed the need for the retailer to use the services of a screen print shop because now they could customise customers orders in-house and on-demand.

This also meant that the retailer could hold much less stock than before, as each item could be printed as it was ordered. And as the market grew larger, heat press manufacturers naturally started a process of evolution – both improving performance and adding extra bells and whistles. In today’s market there is a press to suit every commercial requirement, and what’s more, some of them are now very sophisticated and are computer controlled. All presses achieve the same end – it’s just that the extra refinements and additions make the

Print + Heat = Profit

There is, if you will excuse the pun, a lot of “hot air” surrounding heat transfer presses. It is almost like a mystique has grown up around the machines, when in fact, all you need to know are the basics. Robin Bull of Target Transfers reports on this pressing issue!

process easier and more efficient.

THE bAsICsAll heat presses utilise three basic requirements: 1 Temperature. Most machines are

now thermostatically controlled so that the press can be set to a pre-determined temperature, and the thermostat will ensure that, once that temperature is reached, it will maintain the machine at that setting. Adjustable temperature is provided as there are many different materials and transfers which may be used, and are often applied at different temperatures. As a rule, the average application temperature will be around 160-180°C. Ensure that the press you are considering has a robust heating element that covers the entire upper platen. This ensures even temperature across the entire platen, and avoids any possibility of a “cold spot” which, because it is not at the same temperature, may cause problems with the application.

Look at the thickness of the platen. This will give a pretty good indication as to whether or not the platen is rugged enough (a) to keep the element securely in place and ensure better holding of temperature and (b) make sure that the top platen is kept level when it meets the lower platen. Does the platen have a Teflon coating? Better presses will, and this means it’s easier to maintain and keep clean – it is very important that the platens are kept clean. It’s good practice to use a cover sheet or release paper over the top of all garments during application. This ensures that there is no risk of contamination of the upper platen – particularly important when working

with sublimated garments.2 Pressure. This should really say

“even pressure” because that is essential for perfect applications. You also need to be able to adjust pressure – most machines offer this facility. On the more basic presses, pressure is adjusted manually. On more sophisticated machines, exact pressures can be set or pre-programmed for ease of use. Adjustable pressure is needed for two reasons. Firstly, different materials need different pressure — for example, pre-printed transfers, and media paper transfers usually require firm pressure, whereas Cad-Cut™ materials normally need lighter pressure to ensure best results. Secondly, you need adjustable pressure for different garments. The setting for say a t-shirt would normally be higher than for a sweatshirt as the material is much thinner. Make sure that you fully understand how the pressure can be adjusted on your new press, when considering a purchase, remember to compare the ease of use with different machines.

3 Time. This is the third essential part of the heat transfer press process. Different materials will usually require different times during application – so an adjustable timer is essential. There are many different timers. These range from the very basic clockwork timer, right through to sophisticated electronic digital timers. All give an audible warning when the time set has elapsed. Some of the more advanced machines now provide a magnetic release for the upper platen, which will, when the time has elapsed, automatically release and open the press. This is quite a helpful feature, partly

because it enables the operator to do something else during the application, and partly because it guards against accidental over application and scorching.

TypEs Of pREssThere are basically two different types of heat transfer press. The first is called “The Clamshell”. This is the original and simplest type. It’s called a clam shell because the press opens and closes from front to back, so that when the press is open, the upper heated platen will be suspended directly above the fixed lower platen – basically how a clam shell opens and closes! The opening will vary from press to press, but will be something around a 30-60° angle. A big advantage this type of press has is that its “footprint” on a work surface is much smaller. Check to see if the upper platen is “floating” in the open position. This means that when the press is closed it will meet the lower platen at the same time and completely evenly. If the upper platen is stationary, it is likely that the back of the platen will meet first as the machine is closed, and this could cause some problems with application. Care must be taken when working with the clam shell press in that the upper platen will be extremely hot (around 180°C) and may cause a burn if proper attention is not paid to it. As mentioned above, some of the newer clam shell presses now have a magnetic hold down feature, which works far better for situations where the user needs to be doing several things at the same time! The second type is called “The

Swingaway”. The upper platen is moved manually to the side of the press whilst the item is prepared for application, and again after the application is complete. This type of press requires a larger work area as its “footprint” is greater than the clam shell. It also tends to be more expensive but does offer the advantage of easier access, and a larger area

on which to lay out the garment. Again check that the upper platen is “floating” – the swingaway (sometimes called a “swinger” press) works particularly well on heat application to items such as mouse mats, or thicker garments. The upper platen will be very hot during use, so again care should be taken whilst in use.

OTHER THINgs TO CONsIDERThere are different heat presses for different purposes — cap presses with specially designed platens shaped to work with caps and baseball hats and mug presses for applying heat transfers. The better quality presses often feature interchangeable platens enabling the user to accommodate different applications. Flat Bed Platens can range from around 15cms square to 40 x 50cms which will deal with most applications.Remember to take into account the

weight of the press, particularly if you need it to be reasonably portable. The larger the press inevitably means the heavier it becomes. If you have very large volumes of garments to print, consider a pneumatic press. This workhorse will both speed up production and give years of solid service – but remember that you will need a compressed air supply to run it.

pRICINg Heat Transfer presses can vary enormously in price and range from a few hundred pounds for the most basic machine up to a couple of thousand pounds for the most sophisticated computer controlled pneumatic machines. But remember what I said at the beginning of this article – you do really get what you pay for. Buying a reputable brand from a reputable dealer should ensure that you get a better product, with a genuine warranty. Keep in mind that you are investing in your long term business future. Buy wisely, and your heat transfer press will be a valued, long serving member of your successful team! Please visit targets website for more details at www.targettransfers.com.

One of our giraffes is missing

AND IT Is a challenge, one that becomes more complex as we

progress, a strange situation when the technology itself is so advanced, yet the very complexity is part of the problem. It was once thought that technology

would solve problems, and there was no reason, in a simple world, to question this optimistic future view. It was seriously suggested that the biggest problem for tomorrow’s world would be what we were going to do with our unexpected leisure time. Whatever happened to that? Maybe it went the same way as unlimited energy, a paperless office, and many other illusions the men in white coats promised a generation ago.Technology has revolutionised many

tasks which were previously desperately dull, time consuming or downright dangerous. Yet for all the benefits in quality of life, it has imposed upon all of us a relentless regime. Instead of having leisure time, away from work, we can be contacted any time any

place, and that immediacy comes together with a management ethos that demands an instant response. Customers now have email, are on

broadband, and expect an immediate response, as if you should keep staff hovering every moment in case their vital message comes in. I guess we are not unusual but we get customers who

send a message in the middle of the night and turn up first thing the doors open expecting the job to have been printed. The “just in time” practise was always

an accounting practice introduced by bean counters to keep as little as possible on the shelf that had to be paid for. This might be great for the day

to day cash flow sheet but the overall implications are ridiculous, especially in a present world desperate to do something about carbon footprints. The result is delivery vehicles dashing back and forth all over the country every hour of the day blocking up highways and byways delivering large amounts of small items, all caused by people expecting instant response, but only prepared or able to pay for what they immediately need. It’s the dilemma every retailer must

face at the counter: how to anticipate customers demands and thus satisfy them. But the problem for the print shop is complicated by the customers understanding of what can be done, when it can be done and what it will cost. It’s the old adage ‘it can be done well, or fast or cheaply, but not all three’. Unfortunately convincing the customer there is only one option available at a time is not so easy.It is a continuous thread in these

columns, and it continues to be so simply because things are not getting any easier. The technology is not making our

lives more relaxing and enjoyable, quite the reverse. As we have all had to widen the customer base, and explore new products and services, we encounter new and often unexpected challenges often on a daily basis. It’s a problem not only at the copy shop (where as I always point out we hardly do any copying any more) but in the print trade generally where printers have spread their net, often via the internet, to attract new business. The new pool of clients armed with digital cameras and computers, is potentially vast. But whereas previously we were dealing with designers or professionals who may have had, or had to learn, some basic understanding of print, talking with an untrained audience and trying to meet their demands and expectations is quite another matter.I often browse the newsagents shelves

— now brimming with magazines that were once predicted to become obsolete — to see if there is anything interesting or relevant. I always avoid

It was once speculated that electronic information would be the end of the printed image. But although Arnold Swartznegger has committed his Californian domain to the demise of the book, in favour of the laptop in schools, it’s an exercise in cost cutting rather than biblical extinction. There’s still little reason to doubt that for some years to come we will be faced with the challenge of putting pictures to paper for the forseeable future. photographic magazines with features like “photoshop made simple” because I know they are going to annoy me.I can get enough of that any day

in the studio: the “surely you can do something on the computer?” syndrome. Yes I can but are you going to pay me my value to do it? No especially when you have a friend who says they are a wizard in photoshop etc. You know the conversation. You get a variation of it over the counter time and time again. They have a friend with a camera, or a

scanner that can do it for them, to save the cost of using a professional service. They have another friend who is very

good at design, or so they say. But will the printing still be good quality? Yes of course we’ll just sprinkle a little magic dust on it and that will solve all the problems. The fact is, you never really know

how a job is going to turn out until you print it. Experience may give you a clue, but there are so many associated issues, there is never any simple one line answer, which is why so much of the challenge is trying to get into the customers head to find out what they really want. In the old copy shop the question was always when do you want it? Now it should be How much are you prepared to pay? because that should dictate time and quality, as much as the original input.A traditional copy job could be judged quickly by the pile of A4 sheets and the time anticipated to go through the machine. A digital print job, with images on disc, or otherwise electronically transmitted, is a much more obscure animal, and so much more difficult to assess. You don’t want to turn the work away,

but you don’t want to underestimate the time and trouble to produce it at the price the customer expects to pay. This covers a lot of current work that seems to come to the counter needing some sort of handling, whether it’s an image to be re-sized or a document that needs to be re-arranged. The manual re-sizing of hard copies

was straightforward, as was the compiling of pages, but digital media calls for different skills. The one thing that remains constant is taking a good hard look at what’s really involved, and checking before committing to a price, or worse to print. There’s nothing more costly than a print job in the bin. This is why the training of staff at the sharp end is ever more vital, even if I’s only educating them to turn the term yes we can into yes we might be able to.A good example came in the other

day with a customer wanting a large poster print of a giraffe from a selection of digital camera pictures. Problem was the best picture of the giraffe had another giraffe in the background and it

made the image look a bit untidy. Could I magic out the offending beast within the budget for the job which allowed about half an hours artwork? Probably, but a close look at the actual image is the key.Like all digital camera images, it’s 72 dpi, but it’s a decent size so the relative resolution will match up with the final output. It’s also reasonably well lit for an outdoor photo.Digital cameras abhor lighting

extremes, too much or too little, and the consequent pixel soup is very difficult to edit without producing obvious and unsightly computer marks. As a photographer, I could spot the

main subject was slightly backlit by the sky, and thus separated from the foliage in the background by a slight rim of light — in this case a pixel or two can make all the difference. Finally, the second giraffe was out of focus, being beyond the depth of field of the camera. All these factors made taking out the latter a pretty straight forward business.Like most things in Photoshop, there

are always three or four ways of tackling

a job. There is often a best way, but there is equally often a compromise way to achieve acceptable results in available or affordable time. Even Adobe say there is no hard and fast right and wrong way, everyone uses tools slightly differently, which is why there are several options. It’s a matter of which comes easiest to hand and eye. Most accurate, and most laborious,

is to create a path using the pen tool, making numerous points around the image which can be joined to make a selection. In this case you could either chose to select the giraffe in the foreground as one piece, or the one in the background in three smaller pieces. The clone tool is then applied to drag nearby grass or leaves into the zone to be hidden.Grass and leaves, as well as clouds and sky, are ideal subjects for cloning as you can virtually create a new pattern yourself. As long as you don’t do anything too regular, no one will notice a bush or two in a different place. Using a clone brush with a nice spread pattern helps prevent uniformity.

There are lots of brushes you can chose from if you opt to open a selection and load a different set, and you can soften or harden the intensity for effect. In the case of grass, which is quite

uniform, it may be quicker to just copy and paste a patch and then blend it in with the clone brush. Blur can also be applied to hide any sharp edges, or disguise any duplication.A faster way to make a selection is to use the lasso tool, which has three options. The straightforward lasso acts like a drawing line to create a selection. If that’s too basic, the polygon lasso is more precise as you can create anchor points to mark more complicated outlines. The magnetic lasso works well if there is a clear definition between items — it literally attaches itself to pixels of a similar nature and you can work it around a chosen subject. Although the lasso tool is fast, if you make a mistake you may have to start again, so it might be favourite to go to the more stable pen-tool path way.The trickiest bit of the final image was

working around the giraffe’s face, where whiskers and eyelashes stand proud of the main image. These are too fine to cut around individually, but a combination of soft erasure, and darkening of unwanted background showing between strands sorted them out. There’s always a subtle way of disguising things if no one’s going to take a particular interest in fine detail. If they were well recognisable human

face and features then photoshopping surgery might need to be a bit more subtle, but I don’t think the giraffe is likely to complain. These are all things to be considered

when assessing the job overall, and ensuring it does turn out to be a real animal.

LEADINg independent, employee-owned Papermaker, Tullis Russell, is delighted to be supporting the Two Sides initiative, with Marketing Director, Malcolm Sinclair, being appointed to the Two Sides Sustainability Management Group. The initiative was instigated by the National Association

of Paper Merchants (NAPM) and has been launched in a bid to show that print and paper is an environmentally sustainable medium. An industry-wide initiative, it aims to dispel the negative and often misinformed environmental criticisms regarding paper and to educate the paper-buying public so they can make informed choices while, at the same time, promote responsible paper use. The initiative will encourage people to question their

existing wisdom about paper, to counteract the impact

of the current environmental lobby against the paper industry and to arrest the guilt surrounding the use of paper.Tullis Russell’s backing of the initiative comes at

an appropriate time for the company as it prepares for the construction of a 45 MW biomass Combined Heat and Power (CHP) facility at its plant. The CHP generator, to be built in partnership with RWE npower Cogen, will reduce Tullis Russell’s annual carbon emissions by 250,000 tonnes while generating 6% of Scotland’s renewable generation targets and should be operational by 2012. Martyn Eustace, Director of Two Sides, commented:

“We are delighted that Tullis Russell is supporting this cause. The Two Sides initiative is gathering increasing momentum in the UK, as supporters come forward from

sectors including inks, chemicals, machinery, pre press and printing. “Changing the public perception will take both time

and effort but Two Sides has the potential to provide a common voice to get the message across that the industry has a first-class environmental record. “I am confident that Malcolm will be a valuable addition

to the Sustainability Group and will play a fundamental role in driving the messages we are trying to promote.” Malcolm Sinclair, Director of Marketing at Tullis

Russell, commented: “The decision to support Two Sides reflects our business strategy for sustainable development.“Our expanding portfolio of FSC and recycled

accredited paper and board grades and our recent support of the Two Sides Initiative are part of our ongoing commitment to using and promoting renewable sources in paper manufacturing. “We are a prime example of a company which is

growing and responding to market demands while championing an environmentally friendly approach.”

LEADINg independent employee-owned papermaker, Tullis Russell, recently welcomed Jonathon Porritt CBE, distinguished environmental writer and campaigner, to its mill in Markinch as the company celebrates its 200th anniversary year.Porritt, who has held the position as Chairman of the UK Sustainable

Development Commission since 2002 and is Programme Director of Forum for the Future, was welcomed to the mill prior to judging the Fife Green Business Awards, of which Tullis Russell was primary sponsor. The local awards recognise and reward the environmental achievements made by companies of all sizes operating in Fife during the past two years.Porritt was brought up to date on the company’s ongoing proposals for the

construction of a 45 MW biomass Combined Heat and Power (CHP) facility at the plant. This new CHP generator, would be built in partnership with RWE npower Cogen, would replace Tullis Russell’s existing coal fired plant and should be operational by 2012. The plant will reduce Tullis Russell’s annual carbon emissions by 250,000 tonnes

and represent 6% of Scotland’s renewable generation targets. Tullis Russell produce 150,000 tonnes of high quality coated and uncoated board for the premium packaging, greetings cards and cover markets around the world.Chris Parr, Group Chief Executive, commented; “As a leading authority in the field of

sustainable solutions and renewable energy, it was an honour to welcome Jonathon

to the mill and in particular to get his feedback and input into our plans to develop the company as a leading player in environmentally responsible paper production.”Porritt continued; “It is encouraging to see a company with such traditional roots

leading the way in the generation of renewable energy. Tullis Russell is setting an example across the industry despite the turbulent economic climate and this development will reinforce the company’s position as one of the world’s leading environmentally focused papermakers.”

TOsHIbA TEC UK Imaging Systems Ltd has partnered with co2balance a leading provider of voluntary Carbon offsets to ensure that all Toshiba MFPs sold within the UK from 1st June have the ability to be carbon zero. The first scheme of its kind to

be widely offered to MFP customers in the UK, carbon offsetting allows for the investment in projects that save the emission of, or absorb an equivalent amount of co2 to that of your MFP footprint. In this new scheme Toshiba are also offering customers the opportunity to offset the carbon from their first million copies as well as offsetting the machine. This scheme applies to all MFPs within

the Toshiba e-STUDIO range from the small desktop units to the large high volume production machines, including the first million pages. Commenting on the new scheme, Steve Hewson Toshiba Marketing Director said “Every business needs a copier/printer but many customers are concerned about the detrimental effect on the environment of their print. It’s now common to see on the end of an email the reminder to think before printing. However thanks to organisations like co2balance and the scheme which we have devised if we have to print we can do it positively”. All Toshiba MFP’s in the e-STUDIO range are included within the scheme, but where a high volume customer outputs over a million pages, bolt on packages are available

to ensure that the MFP is carbon zero throughout its lifetime. To take part and Carbon Zero your MFP there is

nominal cost, however as a non profit scheme all money is put towards offsetting projects.

Toshiba have elected to support projects in both the UK and developing world, and will continually monitor the

projects they are supporting. “co2balance were the obvious partner for us, as unlike other providers they manage the vast majority of their offsetting

projects directly, which means we know that our money is getting to

the places it should be, and not only are we helping those less fortunate than ourselves we are also helping the

environment” confirmed Hewson. Co2balance work with individuals and organisations around the world to balance out unavoidable emissions and become CarbonZero. Co2balance have worked

successfully with the TV and Laptop division of Toshiba for the past year but were delighted to extend the partnership with the MFP side of the business. Commenting on the new partnership and scheme Mike Rigby, Director for co2balance stated “we are delighted to build on our relationship with Toshiba and offer Carbon Zero printing. With the growing concern over climate change this scheme is another simple, yet effective, step that organisations can take to green their office”. CuRRENTLy on trial in our bureau is a very useful little machine courtesy of Jon Cousins, better known to us as Mr Presco. Many years ago, and yes we have

been in this industry for a long time, there was no problem creasing print that we produced – printing on 160gsm was an achievement, and if it needed folding we simply did it manually. Nowadays having the ability to print

on 300gsm or more on a typical ‘copy shop’ machine means that hand folding is not an option. We now need to fold, or more precisely, crease it without cracking the card, and over the past few years we have been using a small manual creaser to achieve this – with mixed results – so Jon has come to the rescue. On first sight the Presco creaser

appeared similar to the one that was being used, but then we looked again and found that this machine had something we had not encountered before! It actually has measurements

clearly marked down both sides, so you simply set it and get cracking, sorry creasing! We have been used to printing a

greater number than requested by customers as our old creaser is rather hit and miss. Without measurements down the side we often found that the stop bar which the card rests against was not as perfectly aligned as we imagined it to be as the setting on each side would differ with the resulting crease being at a slight angle, and only becoming apparent when folding the card in half.It may be a little early to be thinking

of all those Christmas cards you have to print and fold later in the year so why not treat yourself to an early present, and make life easier.Sorry Jon, it may be a long time

before we get this out of the beta test centre!Presco have also inserted a special

offer flyer in this months magazine. If you are reading this third hand it looked like this…

Ever increasing profit

Have your heard the oneabout a pirate, a fridge and a magnet?AppARENTLy as popular goes, then these are hot hot hot.Print in plastic is the

route for this seasonal profit in pirates. Kids of all ages will be wanting t-shirts, badges, frisbees and yes fridge magnets. All coming to a town near you, that is if you can asked to produce some?

mALE OR fEmALE? You might not have known this … but a lot of non-living objects are actually either male or female. Here are some examples:

FREEZER BAGS: They are male, because they hold everything in … .but you can see right through them.

PHOTOCOPIERS: These are female, because once turned off … it takes a while to warm them up again. They are an effective reproductive device if the right buttons are pushed … but can also wreak havoc if you push the wrong Buttons.

TIRES: Tires are male, because they go bald easily and are often over inflated

HOT AIR BALLOONS: Also a male object … because to get them to go anywhere … you have to light a fire under their butt.

SPONGES: These are female … because they are soft … ..squeezable and retain water.

WEB PAGES: Female … because they’re constantly being looked at and frequently getting hit on.

TRAINS: Definitely male … because they always use the same old lines for picking up people.

EGG TIMERS: Egg timers are female because … over time … all the weight shifts to the bottom.

HAMMERS: Male … because in the last 5000 years … ..they’ve hardly changed at all … and are occasionally handy to have around.

THE REMOTE CONTROL: Female. Ha! You probably thought it would be male … but consider this: It easily gives a man pleasure, he’d be lost without it … and while he doesn’t always know which buttons to push … he just keeps trying.

1 Put both lids of the toilet up and add 1/8 cup of pet shampoo to the water in the bowl.

2 Pick up your neighbours cat and soothe him while you carry him towards the bathroom.

3 In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and close the lid. You may need to stand on the lid.

4 The cat will self agitate and make ample suds. Never mind the noises that come from the toilet, the cat is actually enjoying this.

5 Flush the toilet three or four times. This provides a ‘power-wash’ and rinse’.

6 Have someone open the front door of your home. Be sure that there are

no people between the bathroom and the front door.

7 Stand behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift the lid.

8 The cat will rocket out of the toilet, streak through the bathroom, and run outside where he will dry himself off.

9 Both the toilet and the cat will be sparkling clean.

Yours Sincerely, The Dog

THE sILENTTREATmENT …

A man and his wife were having some problems at home and were giving each other the silent treatment. Suddenly, the man realised that the

next day, he would need his wife to wake him at 5:00 AM for an early morning business flight. Not wanting to be the first to break

the silence (and LOSE), he wrote on a piece of paper, ‘Please wake me at 5:00 AM ‘ He left it where he knew she would

find it.The next morning, the man woke up,

only to discover it was 9:00 AM and he had missed his flight. Furious, he was about to go and see

why his wife hadn’t wakened him, when he noticed a piece of paper by the bed. The paper said, ‘It is 5:00 AM. Wake

up.’Men are not equipped for these kinds

of contests.

wIfE vs. HusbANDA couple drove down a country road for several miles, not saying a word. An earlier discussion had led to an

argument and neither of them wanted to concede their position. As they passed a barnyard of mules,

goats, and pigs, the husband asked sarcastically, ‘Relatives of yours?’ ‘Yep,’ the wife replied , ‘in-laws’’

wOmEN’s REvENgE..‘Cash, cheque or charge?’ I asked, after folding items the woman wished to purchase. As she fumbled for her wallet I noticed

a remote control for a television set in her purse.‘So, do you always carry your TV

remote?’ I asked. ‘No,’ she replied, ‘ but my husband

refused to come shopping with me,and I figured this was the most evil

thing I could do to him legally.’ uNDERsTANDINgwOmEN.. (A mAN’spERspECTIvE)

I know I’m not going to understand women.I’ll never understand how you can take

boiling hot wax, pour it onto your upper thigh, rip the hair out by the root and still be afraid of a spider.

wORDsA husband read an article to his wife about how many words women use a day … 30,000 to a man’s 15,000.

The wife replied, ‘The reason has to be because we have to repeat everything to men … The husband then turned to his wife

and asked, ‘What?’

CREATIONA man said to his wife one day, ‘I don’t know how you can be so stupid and so beautiful all at the same time.‘The wife responded, ‘Allow me to

explain.’God made me beautiful so you would

be attracted to me.God made me stupid so I would be

attracted to you!

wHO DOEs wHATA man and his wife were having an argument about who should brew the coffee each morning. The wife said, ‘You should do it,

because you get up first, and then we don’t have to wait as long to get our coffee.’The husband said, ‘ You are in charge

of cooking around here and you should do it, because that is your job, and I can just wait for my coffee.’Wife replies, ‘No, you should do it,

and besides, it is in the Biblethat the man should do the coffee.’Husband replies, ‘I can’t believe that,

show me.’

So she fetched the Bible, and opened the New Testament and showed him at the top of several pages, that it indeed says…’HEBREWS’

CONfEssION Of AN ITALIAN

An elderly Italian man who lived on the outskirts of Rimini, Italy, went to the local church for confession. When the priest slid open the panel in

the confessional, The man said: ‘Father … . During World War II, a beautiful Jewish woman from our neighborhood knocked urgently on my door and asked me to hide her from the Nazis. So I hid her in my attic.’ The priest replied: ‘That was a

wonderful thing you did, and you have no need to confess that.’ ‘There is more to tell, Father … She

started to repay me with sexual favours. This happened several times a week and sometimes twice on Sundays.’ The priest said, ‘That was a long

time ago and by doing what you did, you placed the two of you in great danger but two people under those

circumstances can easily succumb to the weakness of the flesh. However, if you are truly sorry for your actions, you are indeed forgiven.’ ‘Thank you, Father. That’s a great

load off my mind. I do have one more question.’ ‘And what is that?’ asked the priest.

‘Should I tell her the war is over?

‘Is that the advertising department?’ said the LFP salesman. ‘It is.’ ‘How much would it be to put an ad in

your paper?’ ‘Five pounds an inch,’ replied the

receptionist. Too dear!’ snapped the salesman. ‘Why? What are you selling?’ ‘A 100 metre roll poster printer,’ said

the salesman.

HOspITAL ORDERLyA salesman retired from Xerox and got a job as an orderly in Brixton Prison hospital. On his first day he met up with an old school pal. ‘Joe,’ said his classmate, ‘I want you

to keep a severe eye on the feller in bed number three.’ ‘Why’s that?’ asked the salesman. ‘Well,’ said his chum, ‘he’s been here

a month. Already he’s had his tonsils removed, his adenoids removed, and his appendix removed. I’m beginning to suspect he’s smuggling himself out bit by bit!’

NAmED AfTER DAys‘I called my son David,’ said the Welsh printer, ‘because he was born on St David’s day.’ ‘Ay and I called my son Andrew,’

added the graphic designer from Scotland, ‘because he was born on St Andrew’s day.’ ‘Yes,’ said the copier salesman. ‘I did

the same with my son Pancake!’

bAg Of DuCksOne Salesman met another carrying a bag on his back. ‘What’s in the bag?’ asked the first

Salesman. ‘I won’t tell you’, said the second. ‘Go on, do’. ‘All right then, it’s ducks’. ‘If I guess how many ducks you have

in the bag, will you give me one of them?’ ‘Look’, said the second Salesman, ‘if

you guess the correct number, I’ll give you both of them’. ‘Five’, said the first Salesman.

CRAZy guyA Salesman went to the cinema and, having bought his ticket, went in to see the film. A few minutes later he came back to the box office and bought another ticket. Five minutes later he returned and bought a third ticket. ‘Look’, said the girl at the ticket office, ‘what are you playing at? That’s the third ticket you’ve bought’. ‘I know’, said the Salesman, ‘but there’s a crazy guy inside who keeps tearing them up’.

NATuREs COmpENsATION

A fellow was explaining to a Salesman how Nature sometimes compensates for a person’s deficiences. For example’, he told him, ‘if a man is deaf, he may have keener sight, and if a man is blind, he may have a very keen sense of smell’. ‘I think I see what you mean’, said the

Salesman, ‘I’ve often noticed that if a man has one short leg, then the other one is always a little bit longer’.Seen It TwiceTwo Salesmen were watching a John

Wayne film on television. In one scene John Wayne was riding madly towards a cliff.

‘I bet you £10 that he falls over the

cliff, said one Salesman to the other.

‘Done’, said the second.

John Wayne rode straight over the cliff.

As the second Salesman handed over

his £10, the first said, ‘I feel a bit guilty

about this. I’ve seen the film before’.

‘So have I’, said the second Salesman,

‘but I didn’t think he’d be fool enough

to make the same mistake twice”.

ANCEsTORsA Printer, a Salesman and a Designer

were boasting about how old their

families were.

‘I can trace my family back to The War

of The Roses,’ said The Printer.

‘My family,’ said The Designer, ‘had

their names on The passenger list with

Noah in The Ark.’

‘At The time of The Flood and Noah,’

said The Salesman, ‘our family had

their own boat.’

CuCkOO A Printer, a Salesman and a Designer

were taking an intelligence test. They

were all asked The question: “Which

bird does not build its own nest?’

‘It’s The canary,’ said The Printer. ‘He

lives in a cage.’

‘It’s The parrot,’ said The Designer. ‘He

lives in the zoo.’

‘It’s The cuckoo,’ said The Salesman.

‘Very good,’ said The examiner, ‘how

did you know that?’

‘Everybody knows The cuckoo lives in

a clock,’ said the Salesman.

Foul Smell

A Printer, a Salesman and a designer

took part in an international competition

to see who had the greatest ability to

endure foul smells. Each of them had

to share a cage for as long as possible

with an extremely smelly customer.

The printer lasted three minutes, The

designer lasted four minutes. Then

the salesman went in, and after five

minutes the customer came out.
