A Prayer For “Renew My Church”

Lord Jesus, you speak to us today, as you spoke to holy men and women who have gone before us.In every age and in our own time, you call to us and say: Renew My Church.

Pour out the gift of your Holy Spirit upon us, and so enable us to hear you clearly

to listen to each other attentively to imagine our future boldly

to discern your direction wisely to persevere in your holy will courageously

to stay together in charity to surrender our own plans readily

to embrace the greater good to hand on your gifts to future generations.

May we remain in the holy company ofthe Blessed Virgin Mary, the apostles, and all the saints.

May their example and presenceinspire us with patient confidence

in the work of your grace.

We ask this of you who live and reignwith the Father

in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God,forever and ever. Amen

aby przyjmować większe dobro i przekazywać Twoje dary przyszłym pokoleniom.

Trwajmy w świętym gronieNajświętszej Maryi Dziewicy, apostołów i wszystkich świętych.

Niech ich przykład i obecnośćnatchną nas cierpliwą ufnością

w działanie Twojej łaski.

Prosimy o to Ciebie, który żyjesz i królujeszz Ojcem w jedności Ducha Świętego, jeden Bóg

przez wszystkie wieki wieków. Amen.

* Elisha and Jesus each are able to feed large crowds of people with seemingly insufficient amounts of food, but neither of these miracles could have taken

place if it weren’t for two people behind the scenes. Neither gets more than a single mention in the readings and neither is even named, but neither miracle could have happened without them. In the first reading, it is a man from Baal-shalishah who took barley from the first harvest, baked it into twenty small loaves, and carried it—not to a nearby shrine to the pagan god Baal, but all the way to Elisha, the

prophet, the man of God. He couldn’t have known that his generosity would feed a hundred people.

* In the Gospel, it is an unnamed boy who has five barley loaves and two fish. Was he on his way home from the market? Did he see the crowd and sense the opportunity to make some money? Or did the boy, attracted by Jesus, bring the

food to give to him? Perhaps, as in the first reading, the generosity of one is multiplied to satisfy everyone present.

* Neither Elisha nor Jesus made food appear out of thin air. Both, however, were able to take a meager amount of food and multiply it so that there was more than enough to feed a whole crowd. John hints at something when he describes what

Jesus did: “Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them” (John 6:11). It is the Eucharist he speaks of. Jesus, the Bread of Life, gives his Body to us in the Eucharist. One Body has been multiplied, as it has nourished billions of people over

two thousand years, with more left over for countless generations to come.

For several weeks we have listened to readings that have recounted just how arduous the work of prophets and disciples

can be. In today’s Gospel, the Lord Jesus listens to the reports of those he had sent out “two by two” to minister to the people. After

the apostles reported what they had done, Jesus, recognizing their fatigue, says, “Come away by yourselves to a

deserted place and rest awhile” (Mark 6:31). Perhaps this is what the Lord is telling his disciples in the year 2018 as well. We need

to pause on our journey of discipleship and simply rest in the Lord. Sunday Mass provides many opportunities for quiet times,

particularly during the periods of silence following the readings. Why not take the time today to allow the saving word of the Lord to penetrate your heart during those silent times? Ask the Lord to

renew you in body, mind, and spirit for the arduous work of discipleship.

Rest in the Lord

The American Revolution cleared the way for freedom of religion in the former colonies, since the colonies had

always been a more religiously tolerant place than the old country. Even so, colonial laws restricted the practice of

the Catholic faith, and just as in England, Americans who desired to be priests or nuns had to go to the Netherlands or France. As political storm clouds gathered in France, an

American woman, Mother Bernardina Matthews, the prioress of the Hoogstraeten Carmel in Holland, made a brave move. With two other American nuns, her nieces,

and a Dutch sister, she came to Port Tobacco, Maryland, in 1790. Within twenty years the community had grown to twenty, although by 1823 their farm failed and they had to

move to Baltimore and open a school. The Carmelite order requires contemplation and cloister, so in time the school was closed. The Port Tobacco land had long since been sold, but in 1976 a community of nuns was able to return thanks to loyal neighbors who had worked for forty years for their restoration. Today, our original American convent is fully alive in prayer, hard work, and strong community.

Reading for the Week St. Vincent de Paul

In my experience, have I seen someone’s generosity (perhaps my own) provide something that went much further than could be expected? What can I entrust to Jesus to satisfy the hunger of others? How can I, as a member of the Church—the body of Christ—contribute

to the multiplication of what we have been given?

Question of the Week

The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want.

We Are One Family, Encircled by God’s Love!

Saint Turibius Parish

Parish Mission Statement

We Believe that God is Love, and when we live in love we live in God and God lives in

us! Therefore we, the Parish Family of Saint Turibius, dedicate ourselves to living out

Christ’s Great Commandment: we will love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind, and with all our strength, and we will show our love for God

by the way we love and care for one another. To this end, we will respond to our baptismal

call, strengthened by the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and empowered by

the Holy Spirit. As a Family of Faith that has an Attitude of Gratitude for the gifts God has given to us, we will share our time, our talent

and our treasure with each other. We welcome into our parish family all people, because we

believe that together we are the Body of Christ and together we can bring the love, peace,

forgiveness, healing, and joy of Christ into our community in ways we never could have if we were to remain apart. May all who meet us, who worship with us, who work and play with

us, know we are Christians by our love!
