What a year 2020 has been and we are only half way over! Has it really only been six months? Every time I think it can’t get worse, somehow it does! I

hope all of you and your families are staying healthy and safe.Normally July starts off with a BANG! Unfortunately,

most of the fireworks shows were canceled. But Americans rallied together and put on their own impromptu fireworks show! The skies were bursting with a colorful celebration of our Country! I hope you all had a fantastic 4th of July. I think during these trying times, we need to be grateful for all the blessings in our lives. And certainly America’s Inde-pendence Day deserves a red, white and blue phenomenal celebration!

Speaking of events, our GPX summer calendar is bleak! We had to cancel all our spring activities! I don’t remember the last time my family missed a Dodger Opening Day! How-ever, as a club we have to follow PCA National Guidelines, California guidelines and, most importantly, be respectful of everyone.

GPX continues to have to cancel or postpone most of our events. On a positive note, multiple C&C venues have reopened and it's great to see a variety of cars gathered to-gether again even if they aren’t PCA events. So far, still on the agenda is the Lyon Air Museum Porsche Gathering coming up on July 19. Since it is outdoors, we are hopeful that it will still happen. I look forward to seeing those of you that venture out! My B59 will be making an appearance on the tarmac.

We need to get back on track - literally! My cars are all ser-viced, tweaked, wearing new shoes and ready to drive! Tracks are reopening, but with lots of restrictions. We love getting new members out on the track, but so far no instructors are allowed in the cars at any PCA event. In addition, it’s now HOT at most of the tracks in Southern CA! Regardless, I am still anxiously awaiting my next track day! Luckily, I have re-cently experienced a few switchbacks on the local mountains roads with friends. It is easy to social distance individually in our cars!

Your GPX Board continues their monthly meetings. We are trying to step it up on the social media posts. We hope you are enjoying interfacing on our GPX Facebook page. Don’t forget the latest Circuit is available on our GPX Web Page. We are also in the infancy stages of planning a few Charity Events. So stay tuned for some fun ways to give back to the community. Our Tours have also had to be postponed, but we think they will be coming back soon! We are in the

midst of planning a GPX local Rally. If you have never done a Rally, I highly recommend joining us. It will be an entertaining way to spend the day in your fabulous car of du jour - hopefully it's a Porsche!

I hope you are all staying busy and possibly learning something new? Social distancing is getting old, but without an end in sight, we seem to continuously be looking for ways to improve our domestic lives. Maybe you wake up and see what’s new on B.A.T. or PCA Market. Lots of interesting cars for sale! Who has bought a new toy during COVID lock downs? Many of us have grown more ambitious in the kitch-en. Who knew we had so many chefs in hiding! I see tons of people walking and biking. The dogs seem to be getting tired from all their extra walks! AND I love that the roads are still empty compared to pre-lockdown days!

Can’t wait to share an exciting trip, event or anything. In the meantime, be a positive force and stay safe! Keep up your spirits and hope to see you on some twisty roads soon!

Cheers,Connie

As a member of our board of directors, I can tell you that we have been vigorously looking at how and when we will be able to start having gatherings and

events again. We were very close to having an event in early July when

California's virus numbers spiked and we went back into a lock down.

We've got a good set of protocols developed that we think will work once things open up again. Because we have been so long without being able to do tours (one of the main things GPX does) we are expecting larger than normal crowds when we get back to it. We have been working with PCA to develop something we are calling a Rally. Instead of having groups of 15-20 cars going out in groups with lead and trail cars equipped with radios, groups will be smaller and on their own to drive from the start to possibly one or more checkpoints along the way.

We have been figuring out how to conduct our initial meetings before a tour/rally starts. This is the single most im-portant time that we need to be out of our cars and interact-ing with our check-in crew and to get tour/rally instructions.

You can expect to see more traditional rallies, like gim-mick, photo or poker rallies.

Our primary concern is protecting the health and safety of our members/participants. We will likely require some-what more stringent procedures, depending on what is going on with state and local standards when we they allow these events to happen.

Personally, I've been able to get my vehicles out on the road at least once a month... Just enough to give them a good warm-up. I've heard about other small groups who get together for drives. These are not PCA events and we hope that these people are being smart with the use of face masks

and distancing. We have also looked at a couple of fundraising events. The

first was a golf ball drop from a drone, but with the PCA restriction on drones, we had to bail on that one. Currently, president Connie Somers is developing a ducky race. As my wife sits painting toy, plastic ducks for the event, you will be hearing more about this in upcoming emails. We expect the ducky race to happen in August. Our goal is to raise a mini-mum of $5,000 for Children's Dental Health Clinic.

Somehow these plastic ducks will be racing across a swim-ming pool. How you place your bets is a mystery to me, but all will be revealed soon.

You'll find a lengthy story in this issue about John Reilly, who passed away just five years ago. His wife, Patty (our Charity Chair) and I put this together. John was an amazing man and I hope you will get a sense about what a guy he was.

Another sad thing to report is that Michael Dolphin's mom passed away on July 19. We all offer our condolences to Michael and his family.

In the August issue the feature article is going to be a reprint from a recent L.A. Times article by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on Central Avenue and the Jazz Oasis back in the day. It is a fascinating article. Included in the article is Dolphin's of Hollywood, owned by John Dolphin, Michael's father. This store played a prominent role in the promotion of Jazz back in the day. I think you will find this story most enjoy-able and interesting.

JOHN 'JAY' REILLYGRAND PRIX REGION CHARTER MEMBER AND MUCH MORE

STORY BY PATTY REILLY; PHOTOS PROVIDED BY PATTY REILLY & SKIP CARTER

In early June of 2015 Jay asked me “What car are you going to turn in?” I looked at him and wondered

where is this coming from, then I real-ized he was saying it’s time for you to start making decisions. So, with a deep breath I said I would probably keep the AMG wagon and turn in the Porsche Panamera Hybrid, reason being we purchased both in 2014, being the wagon was a one pay lease and we were still paying on the Porsche.

He wasn’t too happy with my choice,

as he told me “you know I have been a member of PCA for over 48 years. I promised him that I would replace the wagon with a Porsche in 2017, which coincided with our PCA dues renewal and the end of the wagon's lease.

Jay’s enthusiasm for Porsche started back in 1968 after being in a life threatening auto accident (he was driv-ing a Corvette, he would race Cor-vettes at Watkins Glen) and his father had said "I hope you have learned your lesson with fast cars and will get

As promised to Jay, I did buy a Porsche, and what better way to honor Jay then by ordering another Orange Targa. Over Jay’s life time he owned over 10 Porsches, each one unique and all had stories. One was stolen at USC while he was attending a labor law class, one was so close to the ground I was eye level to the lug nuts on large trucks, another time he want over to the local airport (Meadowlark- no longer there) in Huntington Beach and with a little conversation convinced the manager of the airport to fill his Turbo up with airplane fuel. He finally agreed, but told Jay he had to bring the car back after the airport closed at 6.

All in all, Jay enjoyed all things Porsche, but he also enjoyed photogra-phy. Many have seen his photos from various Porsche events and Long Beach Grand Prix, but he was also a fantastic sailing/yachting photographer. Except the for 2007 America’s Cup in Valen-cia, Spain Jay had attended and photo-graphed all the Cup races since 1968.

We spent two months in 1986 in Freemantle, Australia, months in San Diego for the 1988, 1992 and 1995; Auckland, New Zealand in 1999 & 2003 and San Francisco in 2013. Every January he would travel to Key West, Florida for Key West Race Week, continuing on to Miami for another week of racing, Volvo Around the World, Sydney/Hobart Race, America’s Cup 100 Year Jubilee in Isle of Wight, England and, of course, photographed the Long Beach Congressional Cup. We missed the 2007 Cup in Valen-cia, as Spain did not have compressed oxygen (only liquid, which was not compatible with Jay’s medical needs).

I have included some of the action shots that Jay took on the water of various races. I’m sorry to say I don’t have recent photos of the America’s Cup, as they were all put on a hard drive that I have not yet uncovered where Jay has safely put it away. To this date I’m still finding things that he has safely put away.

something sensible", to which Jay replied "Dad you’ll be happy to know I’m looking at a 4 cylinder car." His dad said good and asked what was the make of this car, to which Jay inno-cently replied "Porsche, a company out of Germany." Jay’s dad walked away delighted that his son was finally mak-ing good adult decisions.

The 4-cylinder car Jay purchased was Tom Seaver’s (yes, THAT Tom Seaver, the New York Mets pitcher) 1968 Orange Targa.

By the way I kept the AMG wagon and, after so many years of carrying the camera equipment around for him, I took up photography so I could also capture photos at the car and sailing events we attended.

Skip Carter here.As Circuit editor since 2003,

one of the people I got to see and interact with on a regular basis was John Reilly. In 2006 when my wife, Suesan retired from her medical social worker job in Toronto and moved to SoCal to be with me, she instantly became a major figure in the Grand Prix region, and she too had a lot of opportunity to interact with John and Patty.

John was a bigger than life character. He passed away in June 2015, but in those twelve years I had the pleasure getting to know some about him.

He was not an easy man. As editor I was able to obtain press credentials for John to photograph events for Circuit, including the Long Beach Grand Prix, Monterey Historics, California Festi-val of Speed and many others. I could always count on getting lots of excel-lent photos.

In his last few years Jay was re-stricted to a utility cart and had to have oxygen at all times. He was tenacious, and "no" was not a word he accepted lightly and, more often than not, fig-ured out a way for that "no" to become a "yes."

Over the years I've seen photos of John with a wide variety of celebrities. From the racing world, to politics and other famous people. He did not let his medical issues keep in down. He was an inspiration to me in that respect, and I sure learned a few things.

I remember stories about yacht racing, the New York Yacht Club, America's Cup. On one trip to Florida to photograph a multi day race, the beating he took in a small outboard bouncing around injured him to the point that he and Patty needed to stay

in Key West for several weeks for him to recuperate enough to be moved to a hospital. You didn't say "no" to Jay.

He and Patty were regulars at the annual Porsche Parades, Rennsport Re-unions and other major Porsche events.

As someone who lived in the rural western part of Sonoma County for about 10 years, I was aware of the existence of the Bohemian Club, a restricted 2700 acre campground in Monte Rio belonging to a private San Francisco based gentlemen's club. They host an annual two week encampment of some of the most prominent men in the world. Jay told me a story about his dad being a member and how many years it took before he was allowed to join.

He was also a founding member of the Grand Prix region in 1981 and, before I became involved, was a board member (and a few stories about those days also came my way).

As I said earlier, John was one of those larger than life people. It's re-ally hard for me to think of anyone else who I've met that I could say that about. He and Patty were a great couple from everything I saw, and I know that many of us miss that man.

Just one more story. They purchased a Porsche Panamera when they came out and wanted to have the back seat modified so they could install an oxy-gen concentrator. After several failed attempts to have Porsche give them the information needed to make the modi-fications (which including disabling a rear seat belt alarm) they took the car to Tony Callas who was able to get the job done. Not only that, but when it was time to get rid of the car, Tony was able to return the car to its original condition.

John was a hell of a man. It was a pleasure (and often work) to work and play with him, which I not only never regretted, but miss to this day.

Rest in peace big guy!

Grand Prix Region Photo Projectby Skip Carter

Something to do? Well, staying at home for over several months now, we've certainly jumped in to some projects that have been back burnered. Charlie Carchedi, Jimmie Mitchell and I are working on a big one. Starting in 2003, when I be-came GPX editor, I am going though all of the photos, year by year, and sending them to Charlie and Jimmie.

Charlie is taking each year and creating a 2-page photo col-lage. Jimmie is putting individual year pages on our website. We've taken steps so that, as much as possible, each of these images, when you see them on our website, will have a date and description of what the photo depicts. There are a few PDF's, primarily for the monthly Circuits.

On the next four pages you will see Charlie's work on the 2008 and 2009 images.

The June issue had the years 2003 through 2007.

With the first turn of its left-handed ignition, fantasy becomes reality. The driver’s seat previously reserved for dreams will now be beneath you. And the unmistakable engine note so often played in your head will now be courtesy of your right foot. Ahhhh, the sweet sound of fulfillment. Porsche. There is no substitute.

1. ADVERTISING We need someone to do followup with our current advertisers & to speak with potential new advertisers. This does not require a lot of time or effort. Our treasurer invoices advertisers quarterly, but we'd like someone to touch base with them occasionally.

2. TECH INSPECTION At our two Day Away from Work events we have a Tech Inspection team who help on Sunday afternoon at our host hotel and Monday morning at the track. We always have plenty of volunteers to help out, but we need someone to oversee the process. If you are mechanically inclined and would like to help, this could be a good way for you to help the club.

Grand Prix Region is officially starting GPX KIDS, in keeping with the Porsche Club of America’s(PCA) overall priority to make our kids a part of the club by starting them young.

Children up to 18 can be registered to become PCA JUNIOR MEMBERS and will receive an age appropriate gift from PCA.

The PCA Juniors program has been created so kids can enjoy club events, learn about Porsches and build the enthusiasm that runs through all of PCA. We look forward to developing the program and its features over time.

The program is FREE! Kids must be registered by an active PCA member. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. can sign up younger family members for PCA Juniors. We will reach out to families to bring their kids to our Saturday morning breakfast meetings the second Saturday of each month, and have younger kids and parents do crafts projects and fun activi-ties and get a GPX Goodie Bag.

For more information or questions please contact Dick Douglass at [email protected]

This is not a book that is liable to win any literary awards; the photos will not receive awards for photo-graphic artistry. It is possible that many people could

flip through it and say it's just snapshots of junk cars. But for someone interested in old cars it is a fascinating read.

When the book arrived this reviewer cracked it open and page 88 came up – Racks and racks of dusty, dirty car parts jumbled together, un-identifiable except for a bin of dirty old start-ers. Jammed between two rows of these racks, a very dusty, dirty, hasn't been touched in de-cades, bumper missing 356B Carrera Coupe! At the risk of offending many people's sensibilities, including my own, it was a Holy Cow! moment for me. That this massive junkyard of exotic, Eu-ropean car bodies and parts exists in Metro-Los Angeles, right under our very noses, is shocking.

The Preface provides seven pages of text ex-plaining how this collection (pile might be a more appropriate term) came to be, and why it still exists. The remainder of the book is simply a col-lection of photos. Some show racks of parts simi-lar to the racks at Parts Obsolete. Some of them look like what Hollywood would put together to convey the concept of a junkyard, except that these cars are much more exotic than the Fords and Chevys in most movie junkyards. None the less, the junk treatment given long ago to bodies (and indeed it is mostly bare bodies shown in the piles) of what are now collector cars, grates on modern sensibilities.

The pictures in JUNKYARD also show cars, and rare exotic ones at that, parked door handle to door handle, bumper to bumper, in rickety looking build-ings, absolutely covered in dust and bird droppings. This re-viewer has already been through the book three times slowly, and still finds new glimpses of Porches each time. And there is always something to grate on the nerves, like a 300SL Gull-wing, door up, hood up, covered with dust; even having bird droppings on the intake manifold! Anyone with an interest in old sports cars and an imagination or ability to visualize, will find that the pictures in this book can lead to hours of contemplation.,

All the pictures have captions, some informative, some seeming somewhat forced, but usually thought provoking. This is a book for a visual person who will find it fascinating with something different to think about each time the com-plex subject matter of these pictures is viewed. Under the dust

jacket, the cover of this book is a glossy photo of a huge pile of car bodies. It took this reviewer several trys but I was even-tually able to positively identify 15 different Porsches in that cover picture. Anyone who can find a 16th, do let me know.

JUNKYARD is hard bound and consists of 176, 9-1/2 x 11-1/2 inch heavyweight pages, with 157 photos, some double page. By the time you read this it should be available for $40.00 from your favorite bookseller (ask for it) or from QuartoKnows.com.
