CHANGES TO THE BPC BOARD

Several changes to the BPC Board were adopted at the general meeting on June 29.

The term of office for all board members was changed from two to three years, allowing staggered terms in order to prevent the loss of an entire board in any one election.

Two at large board member positions were added to the BPC Board, increasing the total number of board members to nine.

Michael Mineni was elected to serve as director of training and development. His term begins July 2017. Irene Fraties stepped down as director of training and development after years of service to BPC.

Linda Kallal was elected to serve as court utilization chair, effective July 2017. This position was vacated by Werner Zehnder who promises to continue to be active in BPC.

Thank you, Irene and Werner! We greatly appreciate your service in these positions. And welcome Linda and Michael!

Thanks to Laureen Lampe for volunteering to coordinate Round Robin Captains this winter.

Laureen brings a gift for communicating processes and organizing the tools captains need to keep our sessions running smoothly. We have been fortunate to have Mike LeRoy in this role for two years, developing procedures and maintaining captain lists. Last winter's engineering magic at the Hoops facility wouldn't have happened without such generous giving. But now it's his turn to do the snowbird thing! Mike has paved the way . . . please welcome Laureen in this role.

Thanks to David Amack for sharing

the following information regarding

WunderStation by Weather Underground LLC.

“You can check on the wind at PNP, aside from tapping into the pickleball camera (west only) and getting a lot of other pertinent weather data. Once I selected the PNP location using the app’s map, I customized things by adding modules (scroll to the bottom and tap the empty widget with the plus sign) and dragging them around. You can get more info from any module by tapping to expand it. I added a second wind module so I can see both the current and daily wind conditions.

Wunder stations are everywhere, so the app is also great for checking weather on your route if you’re taking a trip. For instance, if you’re wanting to go up to the Columbia River and need to see conditions along your route, you can plug into stations every so often.

For now it’s iPad only, but the developers say they’re working on Android.”

I’d like to thank you and the whole Bend Pickleball Club for helping us with our 2nd Annual Frontier Days Pickleball Tournament. The use of your sound system and the great guy to run it, Terry Brown, were so helpful to us. Your club members really stepped up, not only participating as players, but also as referees, which you know is critical for a smooth running tournament. We had 148 players and 57 of them were from the Bend Club. Thank you to each and every one!! With your help, we were able to net over $6,000. Funds will be donated to La Pine Parks and Recreation District to use for pickleball improvements and someday our own outdoor courts. Thank you again for your support of our tournament. Sincerely thankful, Vera Davidson Tournament Director Frontier Days Pickleball Tournament

Thanks to BPC members for their support of

La Pine’s 2nd Annual Frontier Days Pickleball Tournament

Sessions are closed 10 minutes prior to start time to allow time to organize and begin play on time.

In our rapidly growing club, Brian serves a vital role. He is in charge of membership registration, new member packet development, keeps the club roster current(working with Cheryl Dix), notifies members when dues need to be paid, tracks members who are overdue and works with them as needed, helps with community outreach and will in the future assist in the development of additional social events to make the membership experience richer for members. Brian retired and moved to Bend in 2009 with his main squeeze, Anita Stewart. They have adapted to the Pacific Northwest by buying juniper furniture, kayaks, a travel trailer and snowshoes. Next on list: a Subaru and Golden Retriever An examination of his past life reveals stints as an air conditioning office manager, running a catering business, Isagenix associate, aluminum factory slave, warehouse guy, etc. Stay in school, kids! Brian has played chess all his life but is now consumed by the ancient oriental game of Go. He studied Eastern wisdom and entered Nirvana (is back now). Currently he is president of his community’s homeowners association, is a SB360 Certified (fire) Assessor, webmaster and quarterly newsletter publisher for the HOA, and second in command of a household of two. Brian was introduced to pickleball by a neighbor in April, 2014, and ten minutes into it, he was hooked. The BPC has been kind enough to let him do maintenance at Pine Nursery, mentor beginning players, captain round robins and put balls out for players. Life is good!

MEET BRIAN FIREBAUGH, MEMBERSHIP CZAR

What a great experience for the Bend Pickleball Club and the Bend community. Humana continues to be an outstanding title sponsor for the Oregon Senior Games. This year we had approximately 315 participants in the tournament, almost 100 more than last year. The referees officiated 450 matches over the three days. Players and officials had a variety of weather conditions to deal with this year. It was cold and windy on Friday, then the weather changed, with 80 degree temperatures the following two days. As always, it was an honor to be part of the amazing group of people who worked together on the tournament. Without the countless efforts of the many members of our pickleball community, the tournament would not have been possible. A special thanks to the folks that were in charge of the various committees. The volunteerism within each group was impressive. We easily had over 100 people helping in some capacity and refereeing this year. Terry Brown led the facility and maintenance crew. The preparation prior to the tournament was invaluable. If it was water, ice, the PA system, tents, banners, the American Flag, tables or chairs, the set-up crew was probably helping or doing it. Everything just looked great and ran smoothly. Once again, Kathy Foster was amazing as she coordinated ALL the volunteers for food, first aid, goodie bags, the raffles, and the check in desk. She was also the official tournament photographer. Many great tournament photos are posted at: http://www.bendpickleballclub.com/2017-osg-tournament-galleries/ Kirk Foster, as a Co-Director for OSG 2017, handled all the technical operations for the tournament. His job starts long before the tournament and is really an eight month task. The volunteers that helped with operations where just awesome this year. Sandy Brown, Terry Brown, Irene Fraties, and A.J. Fraties ran the referee desk for the tournament. The early preparedness of this group was a huge help. The referee classes and the officials who practiced prior to the tournament were essential for the tournament to be successful. To all who volunteered in any capacity, thank you for your collective love of pickleball. See you on the courts! Christie Gestvang 2017 OSG Pickleball Co-Director
