Trick of the Month. Option Call

by Paul Green Open the presentation by telling the audiences, “There is a phenomenon

known in the sales trade as ‘buyer’s remorse. It’s the second guessing and self questioning that occurs within the customer’s mind after making an important purchase, wondering how much better the deal might have been if only other options had been explored.” Placing his wallet on the table in front of a participant, the performer begins by shuffling a deck of cards and advises, “I guarantee you will experience that sensation in a few moments, even though we will do everything possible to prevent it. Hold out your hand.” One by one, the performer begins dealing the cards into the participants outstretched hand. He says, “Stop me at any time.” When halted, the performer remarks, “I don’t know if you were counting….but there are exactly 17 cards in your hand. (May or may not be so. It’s an arbitrary number) Later tonight, when you rethink this moment, you will wonder what would have happened if you had asked me to deal a few more. Should I?” The participant declines. “As you are driving home, you will question what may have been the outcome if you had opted to stop me sooner. Would you like me to take back some of the dealt cards,” asks the performer”. “Take back two,” direct the participant. The performer complies.

“In the morning,” predicts the performer, “you will ponder what alternative outcome might have been achieved if you had decided to have me deal more or fewer cards. “Would you care to have me add or take back any cards?’ The participant says, “No.”

“It’s your turn to do some work”, says the performer, “so divide the cards you hold into two piles, as if you were dealing a two handed game.” “Select either of the two piles by placing your hand on it and we will use that one” instructs the performer. Sometime tomorrow, you are going to reflect on these events and contemplate the outcome if you had chosen the other pile. You may do so if you wish.” The participant switches top the other pile. “Turn over the card immediately under your hand,” instructs the performer, so that we may see the result of your random pattern of choice.” As the spectator is flipping over the card, the performer opens the tabled wallet to reveal a single, face down playing card. When turned over, it is revealed to be a duplicate of the participant’s choice. Secret of the effect: Start with any two cards on top of the deck and their duplicates stashed in the opposite sides of a Himber style wallet. Your shuffle retains the two top cards and the rest is self-working until the point at which you open the wallet to the appropriate card. The Warren Hamilton Ring 175 in Tampa held a Magic Fest Convention on Saturday June 19th It was a terrific success. Not only because of the 150 attendees, but their management of the events was without a flaw. From registration, the lectures, provisions for lunch and the close up sessions were superior to many 3 day conventions I’ve attended in the past. The lecturers were outstanding and available for question and additional help if required. The dealers room was well laid out making it easy for many of us to spend money on more stuff. The dealers provided the many items used for raffle prizes with all the proceeds going to the Rachel Colombini fund. A number of Ring 81 members were in attendance as were members from Ft. Meyers. We enjoyed out trip home speaking of the pleasant time we had spend among the many magicians in attendance.

Celebrating 100 years since man mastered the skies above Australia is the Perth Mint’s new 2010 Australian Centenary of Flight Silver Proof Coin. This coin not only honors the act of that flight, but also the man who completed it; someone who was better known as a magician than a pilot.

The year was 1910 and a famous magician was touring Australia with his act. This magician was none other than Harry Houdini. Houdini had amassed fame as an escape artist, illusionist and actor. One of his little known talents and interests was that of a pilot in the newly discovered field of aviation. Houdini was so impressed with the possibilities, he bought his own bi-plane.

Hearing of his interest in flight, officials in Australia asked the famous magician to give a demonstration. After a couple of short attempts, Houdini managed to stay aloft for more than five minutes giving him the honor of being the first person to achieve powered flight over Australia.

The coin celebrating the momentous occasion is struck from one ounce of .999 fine silver to a maximum mintage of only 7,500. It ships in a presentation case with an illustrated shipper and a certificate of authenticity. Submitted by Dorothy Wolfgang
