“How to speak so that people want to listen”TED Talk by Julian Treasure

Human voice: Its the most powerful instrument we all play!!

How can we speak powerfully to make change in the world??

But First,

What are the sins that we commit while we speak??

1.GOSSIPING

Speaking ill of someone when he/she is not present!

FACT- The person will be gossiping about you five minutes later.

2. JUDGING

Its very difficult to communicate when you know that you are being judged!

3. NEGATIVITY

Its very difficult to listen to negative people. They bring pessimism to life.

4. COMPLAINING

People see you as a person who will always say something to criticize or complain! We don’t want to be that person!

5. EXCUSES

They will never take responsibility. They are blamethrower. We don’t want to hear excuses.

6. LYING

This is the most dangerous sins of all. If there’s a common hate for a person in a society, its for the lyer.

7. DOGMATISM

When people keep throwing opinions at you, not allowing you to argue, they become repellent!

But is there a positive way to think about this?

Its also the way you say it.

There’s this toolbox for speaking!!

1. Register

● You can locate your voice.● Throat, it is from where most of us speak.● If you want weight, you go down the chest. We

associate depth with power and authority.

2. Timbre

● It is the way our voice feels.● We prefer voices which are rich, smooth and warm.● But if it is not your voice, it is not the end of the

world.● You can train, get a voice coach. ● You can do postures, breath and exercise to improve it

● This is the sing-song , the meta language. Its add meaning.

● Not being monotonous, is talking with prosody.● Sometimes, its “repetitive prosody” in which every

statement is a question.● This restricts your ability to express.

3. Prosody

● We fasten up when we get excited.● We slow down when we want to emphasize on

something.● Our old friend, SILENCE! You don’t have to fill all

the voids with ums and uhs. Silence is powerful.

4. Pace

● You can add meaning with pitch.● We say “I don’t like the pitch of her voice”. That’s

that.● You can be effective speaker, if you pitch correctly.

5. Pitch

● You can be very impactful if you have a loud voice, or you get all serious and listening by lowering it.

● Well, don’t broadcast always. That’s SODCASTING.

6. Volume

Register PaceTimbre PitchProsody Volume

Well that’s your toolbox to look at whenever you are to speak something important.

All SIX TOGETHER

Voice is like an engine, it needs to be warmed up before you start your speech.

1. Arms up(like a V), deep breath in and sigh out like “ahhhhhh” with the hands going down.( 2 or 3 times)

2. Warming up lips. Roll in both your lips in and say “ba”. Do this 20 times.

3. Now, “brrrrrrrrrrrrr” just like a kid. Your lips will come alive.

4. Exaggerate with “la la la la la la la…” 5.Simply roll an R like “Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr”. That’s like champagne for the tongue.

6. Finally we have our special one! It is called the “siren”. It starts with “we” and goes to “aw”. The “we” is high and “aw” is low. So you go “weeeeaawww”,“weeeeaawww”.
