Annual Congregational meeting during morning worship services on June 24.

The Gospel According to Greg

Greg Taylor Greg Taylor Greg Taylor Greg Taylor [email protected] Sunday’s service was a little different than most at FCC. Jim didn’t lead worship and I didn’t preach a sermon, yet the message was abundantly clear: taking the message of Jesus Christ to the people of the world isn’t just a good idea – it’s our calling – our mandate. Several of you chimed in after the service about how much you appreciated the messages of our special guests from Chile and Kenya and I won’t forget Sunday for quite some time! Thanks to Marcia Wise, Bob Rice and the 4given band for leading worship and sharing specials during both morning services. I love so much their heart for the Lord and their desire to use music to bring glory to Him! You actually have an opportunity to hear them this Saturday just up the road in Normal, as they participate in the Christian music day at the Normal Cornbelters minor league baseball game. 4given will play at 5 pm, and three other groups will also share music. Then at 7 pm, the game begins – you can witness all of this for just $11! What a deal. And thanks so much to Barb O’Donohue and Jack Swanson for sharing with us during both morning worship and the Bible School hour. Neither are strangers to us at FCC, as we have been in partnership with COPE and the Swanson’s for quite some time. And while the ministry context in which they serve is very different, their stories are pretty similar: ordinary people from Illinois who felt the call later in life to serve the Lord via missions in places most of us will never visit. And the GREAT news is this: they are each making a huge difference for the Lord – in Santiago, Chile and with the Pokot people in Kenya. Praise the Lord! Keep lifting up Barb and the Swansons in prayer.

The Gospel According to Greg (cont’d)

During each service, Ernie unveiled our VBS Bible plan for 2012 – that every attending child 5 years through 5th grade would leave VBS with a good Bible. We prayed over these Bibles during each service (all 200 of them), and I can’t wait to see what God does in the lives of the students who this week are invading FCC each morning from 9 – 11:30. I couldn’t stop thinking about Psalm 119:11 during our special prayer time:

“Your word I have hidden in my heart,

that I might not sin against you”

Will you please lift up the many teachers and leaders of our VBS in prayer, along with Ernie and Jack Swanson (our VBS missionary). And, thank you in advance to the many who make VBS at FCC a special, difference-making week in Clinton. Finally, this Sunday we will resume our Women of the Faith series, looking at the life and heart of Hannah from 1 Samuel 1. The services this Sunday will have a special prayer emphasis and will look a little different – so plan now to come with an open mind and an open heart, and see what the Lord has in store for us this Sunday. Have a great week – blessings, Greg

Have simple faith; pray simple prayers, be quick to repent, and be quick to receive God’s help. Believe God is good. If you need God’s forgiveness, ask God for it, receive it by faith, don’t waste your time feeling guilty and condemned. With this kind of simplicity in your relationship with God, you’ll find yourself growing spiritually and enjoying Him more than ever. Remember, enjoying God at all times in whatever we are doing is our goal. “Be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” John16:33 KJV We certainly had a fine time enjoying Marcia Wise this past week. She’s a true blessing to us all. Our next guest will be Julie McClarey on the 11th of July, with her piano talents we always enjoy. She’s so talented and we will be happy to have her. Then on the 1st of August, we’ll have Chrissy and Ken from the BeMent Country Opry for country music at its finest. The heart always has room for beautiful memories. Sullivan always provides special talent for our shows there, so much dancing and singing certainly keeps us smiling as it did last Saturday evening. The Beef House will be the 12th of July, giving us Broadway’s finest music with Kathleen and Robin; and with yeast rolls to be enjoyed by all. Myers Dinner Theater in August will give us a fine stage play with “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.” September we’ll go to the Bement Country Opry for a great evening with them all. Kimmswick will be our stop in October on a cruise up the old Mississippi. Good pie for all. November we’ll travel to Branson for a Fall get away of fine food and great shows. “Age is a matter of feeling, not of years.” George Curtis We encounter a lot of people. Some of them are by choice, but a lot of them just end up in our life as we go through our day. You will not enjoy a lot of your “present moments” unless you decide to also find a way to enjoy the people who invade them. “As thy days, so shall thy strength be.” Deuteronomy 33:25 KJV

Here is the sequel to last week’s topic! I generally don’t like sequels. I believe that too many sequels are just a chance to cash in on a successful first-run movie! However, in my case last week, I just didn’t have space to list all of the movies that we need to think about! So here is the continuation of my list…interestingly two of my favorites are…sequels! Remember the Titans – This is a great sports movie! I love the intensity

and most of all I love the story of how this “inter-racial” football team overcomes racial division.

The Passion Of the Christ – This amazing film brought to life Christ’s sacrifice as no other has. I am critical of many of the stereotypes we have created that depict Christ (how many pictures of fair skinned, blue-eyed Jesus’ have we displayed?). The Passion Of the Christ tears down those stereotypes and replaces them with a raw, visceral and unsettling picture of what Christ endured on the cross.

The Dark Knight – This has become one of my favorite movies in recent years. It is a complex and unsettling movie at times and I certainly don’t recommend letting your young children see this movie (It is rated PG-13 for a reason!) However, there is a deep spiritual message that becomes clear near the end of the movie. As we learn that Gotham City’s “White Knight” has fallen as a flawed, deranged individual, it becomes evident that Batman must become the substitutionary fall guy, and take the blame for crimes he didn’t commit. Can’t wait for the sequel to find out how it all turns out!

The Lord Of the Rings Trilogy – This is probably my all time favorite novel and movie (yes another sequel!). Worship Leader Magazine puts it this way: “…they were masterpieces infused with the heart of a follower of Christ: redemption, sacrifice, forgiveness, hope and despair, power and temptation, multiple Christ figures (Frodo, Gandalf, Aragorn).” I can’t think of another movie that more powerfully describes the struggle of good versus evil with such a strong redemptive message. If you have not seen these movies, clear your evening schedule for a week or so and watch these movies in succession.

Enjoy these and the many other movies that communicate redemptive

messages for us consider and discuss.
