SCHOOL NEWS Wednesday 15th May 2019

John Perryn’s new garden

Why the walk to school matters? Happier children – its been proven that children who do some form of exercise, do better in class because they’re refreshed. Less congestion –during morning peak traffic times, one in five cars on the road are taking children to school, contributing to congestion, air pollution and carbon emissions. Cleaner air – the school run alone is responsible for generating 2 million tonnes of CO2 per year. Imagine what we could achieve if we began converting some of these rides into these strides.

A delightful insight into sibling life is delivered through appealing animal characters in this simple and effective picture book. The narrator explains that he and his sister enjoy lots of different activities, but many of the same things too. Offering a suitably balanced picture, we also see both the high’s and low’s – even the squabbling and occasional sense of injustice, inevitable in any sibling dynamic. And reassuringly, we see that, ultimately, the relationship is one of mutual love.

Ollie is looking forward to a spot of treasure hunting with his best friend Piper during the holidays, but his plans are hijacked by the arrival of his annoying cousin, Thomas. Thankfully, things liven up when Grandma Dangerous drops in. After snaffling a few cucumber sandwiches and procuring a hacksaw, the eccentric pair hurtle away in Grandma’s hot air balloon. In their haste, they leave behind an extraordinary object, which Thomas identifies as a priceless Fabergé Egg, stolen from a St Petersburg museum 30 years earlier.

The first time Lewis spots an unfamiliar Creature tracing a path across the moor he thinks he might be dreaming – or perhaps has even died of fear. After all, he is dangling from a precariously swinging rope half way down a sheer cliff face. His friend Rhona thinks it’s more likely that he imagined it. When the pair discover that Lewis’s vision was real, and that they have stumbled upon the world’s last remaining wild unicorns, they are forced to turn detective in order to save the magical animals from ruthless exploitation.

Focus on you – focus on doing the best you can, that’s what matters. Everyone is different so try not to worry about what other people in your class are doing.

Today two of our marvellous year 6 children Samir and Chaymaa, interviewed the assistant head teacher Mrs Anna Eva Lebiszczak.

Describe yourself in depth

“I am a loyal and caring person towards my friends, colleagues and family. I enjoy making people happy and like spending time with my loved ones.“

What do you think makes an outstanding lesson?

“I think what makes a good lesson is for the teacher to have a professional and positive relationship with the children and also to make sure that each child makes progress throughout the lesson. It also has to be an exciting lesson, which makes the children intrigued in their learning and eager to participate.”

Name 3 of your strengths

“I am a hardworking teacher always eager to help and I am a fair person, that genuinely enjoys working with children.”

What is your leadership style?

”I am supportive and like to incorporate ideas and value all members of staff. I work hard and try to encourage others to do the same. I take pride in my profession.”

Personally, do you think John Perryn Primary School is a

friendly and supportive school for new children to attend from

all races and backgrounds?

“Definitely, as the teachers go out of their way to help all children feel welcome and supported. We are a ‘Rights Respecting School’ and there is a big focus on that and the children all follow the John Perryn Way, making the children aware of their actions and behaviour towards others. I think that children feel that staff really care about their wellbeing and welfare as well as their academic success.”

KS1 News

Year 1 News Year 1 have been enjoying making slime! They have been practicing writing recipes and would like to share one with you….What colour would your slime be? If you want to have a go at making slime at home… year 1 have the perfect recipe for you to follow but make sure you have an adult to help you.

100ml PVA Glue

Half a teaspoon of bicarbonate soda

Glitter!

Food colouring

1 teaspoin of contact lens cleaner

Gel food colouring

1. Squeeze the glue into a mixing bowl (look for a bottle in a 100ml

size if possible so you won’t have to measure it out). Add the

bicarbonate of soda and mix well.

2. Add a drop or two of your chosen gel food colouring. Less

colouring gives a pastel colour; the more you add, the brighter the

colour. Mix until well incorporated.

3. Add the contact lens solution and mix. The slime will begin to

form, going stringy before coming away clean from the bowl into a

ball.

4. Once it has formed, take it out and knead it with your hands. It

will be sticky at first but after about 30 seconds you’ll have a

smooth and pliable ball. Add glitter at this point, if desired, and

work in with your hands. Store in a pot with a lid.

Where does your slime come from??

Can you create a story for your slime?

Once upon a time a magical mermaid lived beneath the glittering waves….

Can you finish my story?

Hocus pocus! You have a ball of slinky

Year 2 News The Great Exhibition! Year 2 visited The Victoria & Albert Museum for an exciting trip through time… we walked right back to The Victorians to explore The Great Exhibition. We discovered the origins of the three famous museums in Kensington. Did you know that there was a great Palmhouse built named The Crystal Palace to house intricate works of art presented to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Delegates arrived from all over the world to buy tickets to The Great Exhibition…enough money was raised to build the three ornate museum buildings which you see today… do you know what they are?

Lower KS2 News

Year 3 news

During year 3 enabling enterprise week, the children worked in teams to produce a class recipe book based on a theme chosen by the class. After researching suitable recipes, they thought about how they could be adapted or improved before actually making the recipes. The children learnt about the world of publishing and TV production by producing their own finished recipe book and filming food demonstrations in the style of a cookery programme. Finally, the children delved into

the world of marketing to promote the special food fair they will organise and run to help promote and sell their class recipe book.

Year 3 have produced some excellent book reviews for their essential reads… The children are very excited and enthusiastic to take home the next book! Encourage your child to take home one of

the essential reading books!

Year 4 news As part of Power of Reading, we are looking at the story, ‘The Great Kapok Tree’. Year 4 have designed some exciting displays to engage the children! As part of their writing journey, they have so far written in role as animals trying to protect their home. In addition, they have become rainforest experts and researched the effects of the logging industry and deforestation.

Taking on the ever-growing chocolate industry, students worked in teams during year 4 enabling enterprise week to create a new chocolate brand that grapples with real world trends in the chocolate bar market. Teams presented their new chocolate brand to a panel of Dragon’s Den style judges and referred to the mathematical skills and processes they applied to get to their final product. They worked on a number of enabling enterprise skills to complete the challenge such as team work, aiming high and using their imagination.

In our phase, we are encouraging children to read as much as they can. We have created a list of books which are called ‘essential reads’, your child will be lucky enough to have the opportunity to take these fantastic books home to read! Once they have completed one of these books, they will be able to create their own book reviews… These will even be displayed!

John Perryn Children’s Centre

For your information… On Thursday 23rd May, John Perryn Children’s Centre will be used as a polling station. The primary school will be open as usual.

Further Reminders

Please support John Perryn Children’s Centre

At the moment the London Borough of Ealing have a consultation about the future of children’s centre’s in Ealing.

Ealing Council, along with most local authorities, is facing the toughest financial challenges in recent times. Our government grant has been reduced by £143.7m, equivalent to a

reduction of 64% over the past 10 years. We need to reach as many families as possible, ensuring all voices are heard!

This consultation will be open until 17 May 2019. You can take part by completing

either an online survey (see link - https://www.ealingfamiliesdirectory.org.uk/kb5/ealing/directory/advice.page?id=HMp-

cgCO5Vw), or a printed survey and hand it in to a member of staff at any children's centre.

Thank you to the parents who have cleared their outstanding debts for their child’s school dinner meals, school trips and after school clubs.

We have been in touch with each parent who still have outstanding payments and will continue to pursue this. Payments for trips and clubs can be done using our online ‘School Money’ system. Harrisons debt needs to be paid directly to them online or via telephone.

If this does not change, meetings with Mr Diaz will need to be arranged. Children whose school lunch accounts continue to be in debt will need to start coming to school with packed lunches.

It has come to our attention that parents / carers / family members are smoking close to the main school and children centre entrances and as such

the smoke can be smelt inside the buildings. We kindly ask that anyone wanting to smoke does so further away from the school buildings at a safe distance so it does not affect the school environment for children, staff and

other parents. Thank you.
