A Reminder Of Who Am I & Why Am I Sharing What Helped Me?

Who Am I….I am a hardworking guy who, like many others, found himself out of work during the economic downturn in 2010. After a long battle of wrong turns, job search strategies that led to no where, and dead end leads, I decided to take a more strategic approach to my job search. Like anything else in life, I needed to treat my search like a full-time job and create a plan that would allow me to stand out above the competition.

Why Am I Sharing What Helped Me…because I quickly realized that to handle an event like that is to focus on what you can control and share the experience to help others. I believe that an experience not shared is a lost opportunity in life, and that smart people learn from their mistakes and smarter people learn from other people’s experiences.

In Part 6, We Focus On Networking.

The next group of slides will discuss things that I did to network with other professionals and ideas that I had to network that were really off the beaten path.

I will tell you the tip or idea and let you know why I like it to help you in the interview process.

Remember, I am by no means a professional and never claim to be. I am just giving you things as I see them to help you to see through the ‘fog’ and get ahead in your career.

I hope my ideas help you out and help me to end unemployment one person at a time.

Networking Without The Work.

Whenever possible, network with people that are working. Basically, they are better because they know of possible growth in their current company as they are probably extremely busy. Those are people you really want to focus on because you know that jobs will come sooner or later.

Check Glassdoor.com if you want to learn more about any company as that has unfiltered comments from people about their work place. That said, look for the trend more than a single comment’s opinions as any single comment may not be the norm.

If you meet with someone who is not busy at work or the company is in trouble, its good to know that as well as it never hurts to have information whether it is bad or good.

When looking for people to meet with, think back to people you used to go to lunch with all the time at previous jobs as they know you and would love to catch up with you. Plus, I am sure that they have advanced in their career right?

Join your specific local and national professional organization and attend as many of their events as possible. There could be dinners, seasonal events or other things. Make time for all of these things and give out your business cards to everyone you meet. This is gold, networking gold.

Volunteer to help run these events and then you will meet the elected leaders of your group who have tons of contacts. You should be all over this!

Ok, lets say that you are going to a “networking” event on your area and are really not a good conversation starter because maybe you are a bit of an introvert. No worries, see if you can draft one of your more extroverted friends to go with you. They can be your conversation starter and then you can take it from there.

Link on Linkedin.com to any professionals that you meet who you feel you have something in common with. Who you link to is an individual decision. That said, there be hiring managers and recruiters at any of these events so be ready to be interviewed without being told its an interview. Not a bad thing if you are ready. Right?

Become active in events in your area such as a golf tournament at a golf club. Who belongs to golf clubs? Senior management of companies, business owners and other affluent people. You want to come in contact with people like them so how best to do it than by helping them to have an enjoyable time at something they love to do which in this case is golf.

This also applies to national charitable organization events. Maybe you meet a more diverse demographic but the more people you meet, the more possibility that a contact can be made. Remember, you are only looking for one job and that job can come from anywhere to get yourself where people will be.

How about sports? Ever think about coaching? How many people do you think you will come in contact with by coaching a town or other area type team and if you are not confident that you can be a head or lead coach, just be an assistant.

Coaching, scorekeeping, refereeing are all ways to be around flocks of people. Plus if you ran accredited or official referee you can make quite a living as you move up to better leagues with more experience. Don’t discount this as there are many people both men and women who are making a good income doing this. Plus you stay in shape.

Other great organizations that you could possibly volunteer for to both help people and meet a lot of people are the following;

The Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of America and the Cub Scouts. I am sure you can think of more.

Does your town have events like a 4th of July parade or maybe some veteran recognition events or maybe a town road race or a trash cleanup day? Maybe you want to get involved with those type of events. Not only will you get to feel civic pride but you will meet many people.

Join groups on LinkedIn.com that are based on your profession and participate in discussions in those groups. Also, start your own discussions and keep the dialogue going. Link to the people that participate in the discussions and that way you build your network within your professional world.

You keep up with the times and your profile gets more popular as LinkedIn.com really likes people who are active on their site.

Subscribe to your city’s business journal and go to their events. These events may be pricy but you will be sharing the room with many high level people who will be there to talk and meet people for their company. This again is networking gold as you are with the decision makers and because of the price, few unemployed people will think to attend. This is an unbeatable combo.

Don’t forget your church. Volunteer where you can and maybe even join the choir. Help out during the holidays and be available when you can. The person who runs that church could have many contacts in the business community between parishioners and businesses that quietly donate either money or time. This is a great way to stay busy, be visible and make a difference.
