A Reminder Of Who Am I & Why Am I Sharing What Helped Me?

Who Am I….I am a hardworking guy who, like many others, found himself out of work during the economic downturn in 2010. After a long battle of wrong turns, job search strategies that led to no where, and dead end leads, I decided to take a more strategic approach to my job search. Like anything else in life, I needed to treat my search like a full-time job and create a plan that would allow me to stand out above the competition.

Why Am I Sharing What Helped Me…because I quickly realized that to handle an event like that is to focus on what you can control and share the experience to help others. I believe that an experience not shared is a lost opportunity in life, and that smart people learn from their mistakes and smarter people learn from other people’s experiences.

The Linked”In Crowd”

The next group of slides will discuss things that I believe you should do to make your LinkedIn profile more noticeable and complete.

I will tell you the tip or idea and let you know why I like it to help you in dealing with the process.

Remember, I am by no means a professional and never claim to be. I am just giving you things as I see them to help you to see through the ‘fog’ and get ahead in your career.

I hope my ideas help you out and help me to end unemployment one person at a time.

Get a picture up on your profile.

Get a professional photo if you want but not an avatar or one with your family or your dog.

Get over yourself and let the world see you for who you are.

What are you telling the viewer if that person cannot see your picture.

What else is being hidden? Questions..

Make sure that you have your name unique to you and have that consistency in your business cards, resume and other social media.

Put your certifications and degrees next to your name. List in-process ones as well so that the cert will be indexed within LinkedIn.

Check your name online and make sure yours is completely unique. Do this with Facebook as well as other social media. Make sure when people search for you, they find you.

The Linked “In” Crowd.

Buy a Job Seeker version of LinkedIn.

It worked for me and it shows that you are serious about your search.

Recruiters find you easier.

The jobs get emailed to you on a scheduled basis.

The Linked “In” Crowd

The jobs listed on LinkedIn are new and need to be filled quickly.

You will see who posts the job and then you will see the process happen as that person check your profile and then you will know right away if there is interest in you.

Make Sure that your title statement states completely who you are and has some zing to it.

If you want, you can put seeking new opportunities but I say check other people that do what you do and “borrow” one of their titles maybe.

Make it resonate.

List all the duties that you did in your previous jobs because you never know which ones matter to the HR person or recruiter that is checking your profile.

Show where you mentored, saved money or worked in a diverse environment. That stuff is unique to you and is part of what the next employers gets when they hire you. Be proud of it and make sure that it shows your balance and desire to make the company a better place.

Go as far back job wise as you are comfortable with. I go back to the 70’s and people contact me all the time.

Always make changes to your profile and make sure that the box is checked for you to have an update notification sent to your group. People seeing your name more helps you to not be forgotten.

Make sure your certifications are listed under education as well as all of the previous work classes and seminars that you took. These are work items that make you more knowledgeable and skilled. When you are in transition you will take many of these one day classes and the like. I say list them as well as all of the things that you may have taught to people in a class setting.

List your volunteer items especially your community service as well as your interests. It shows balance and you never know if that interest connects with someone that would interview you.

Growing your network starts with you opening your mind.

Who did you always go to lunch with in your previous jobs? Who do your know from your previous jobs?

Facebook friends? Twitter followers? Cross Social network as you see fit.

Proactively recommend people via the recommendation tool. This is NOT the tool where you click a skill. Actually write a recommendation for someone or many people that you worked with or for that you never got around to doing. LinkedIn loves this and you may also get one back which makes your profile even more complete.

Join Professional Groups in your field and let them list in your profile. Be very liberal with this as you never know where your next piece of great information to discuss in an interview will come from.

This will keep you up to date in your field and help you learn about free webinars on LinkedIn for you to take.

Join leisure groups in something that you love and uncheck the box so that the group does not show on your profile. While looking let your Job Search groups show and if you start a group, let that show.

This will keep you up to date in your field and help you learn about free webinars on LinkedIn for you to take.

Start and Participate in discussions liberally. LinkedIn loves this as well since you are making the greater group better by your participation.

Comment as much as you can in the groups and always keep your comments concise and on topic. Start away from confrontational people and keep it positive.

Got a great presentation or paper that you have created? Post it on your profile.

Place your presentation on Slideshare.net and add tags as well as a description. This little talked about website is a great place to drop a PowerPoint. Just make sure that the title, keywords and descriptions are there as well so it will index properly.

Use the Post process to give people information about whatever your professional skills are or maybe share your experiences. Post as often as you want and people will start to notice you.

Stay active and fresh on LinkedIn and watch your profile soar. Check rankings of the keywords you use for yourself and after doing some of the things previously mentioned, you will notice more people checking your profile and showing interest in you. From there ranking will soar.

LinkedIn will send you possible people to link to. Always check that list and use that to make your network grow.

Who you add is up to you and you alone. Let no one tell you different.

Keep think of people and keep updating. This profile is YOUR INFOMERCIAL that people will make their judgements about you on. Make it be you and only you.

LinkedIn has a ton of tutorials and articles about how to maximize your profile’s visibility and magically you seem to get more of that information when you are a paying member.

Free is fine but paying helps you to get more access to information. LinkedIn is not the enemy. It is your friend and your best press possible. Use it for all it can give you.

His network is HUGE. Link to him and get access to many people in many industries.

Pass on what does not apply to you.
