I. Teen Employment Safety Facts

A. Every year nearly 70 teens under 18 die from (non-agriculture) work injuries in the US. Another 77,000 get hurt badly enough that they go to a hospital.

B. Every year, over 100 teens die from agriculture work injuries in the US. Another 2,000 get hurt badly enough that they stay home from work.

V. Work/Job Restrictions

A. Age Restrictions in Ag

1. In CA, you must be at least 12 years old to be hired as a farm worker

2. Youth of any age may work at any time in any job on a farm owned & operated by their parents.

3. There are laws that protect teens under the age of 16 from working in certain jobs that have been identified as a hazardous occupations or agricultural zones of danger.

4. In CA, no one under 12 may accompany a family member to work near:

a. Moving farm equipment

b. Pesticides or other chemicals

c. Water hazards such a an irrigation canal

5. In California, no worker under 16 may:

a. Handle or apply pesticides

b. Drive, ride,or assist in operating a tractor or forklift

c. Drive any vehicle for transporting passengers.

d. Use powered equipment such as a chain saw, hay mower, hay baler, or cotton picker

e. Work on a ladder over 20 feet

f. Work inside a silo

B. Age Restrictions in non-Agricultural Jobs1. In CA, workers under 18 may not:

a. Drive a motor vehicle on public streets as a main part of the job, or work as an outside helper on a motor vehicle

b. Operate power-driven machinery

1. Meat slicers

2. Woodworking machines

3. Metal working machines

4. Circular saws

5. Forklifts

c. Mix, load, or apply Category I Pesticides

VI. Employer Safety LawsA. Your employer must provide a safe

and healthful workplace.

B. Your employer must provide training about health and safety, including information on chemicals that could be harmful to your health

C. Your employer must provide protective clothing & equipment

D. Your employer must provide workers’ compensation benefits if you are hurt on the job.

1. Medical care for your injury, whether or not you miss time from work

2. Payment if you lose wages for more than 3 days or if you are hospitalized overnight.

3. Other benefits if you become permanently disabled.

E. You have a right to:

1. Report safety problems to Cal/OSHA

2. Refuse to work if the job is immediately dangerous to your life or health

A. Notify your supervisor right away

B. Get emergency medical treatment if needed

C. Notify your high school Internships in Ag teacher

D. Fill out & complete an accident form
