Henri Lloyd Phase Change technology was born out of ourinvolvement in the America’s Cup. The crews in theAmerica’s Cup needed clothing that could adaptthroughout the differing temperatures of a day’s racing –whether it be the chill of the early morning start orgrinding in the heat of the midday sun; they needed acore range of garments that responded to theenvironment and also changed with their bodiestemperature.

The Henri Lloyd Phase Change Collection features theBlaze Jacket, Atmosphere Jacket, Vapour Jacket and theSensor T. Each of these products can be worn individuallyor with each other to provide you with a ‘Built-In ClimateControl System’ from base and mid layer through to anouter shell.

These products draw on a technology that consists oftemperature sensitive polymers. When the temperaturefalls, the polymers restrict the loss of heat and moisture tokeep the wearer warm. As the temperature within thegarment rises the polymers reconfigure to allow more heatand moisture to escape, cooling the wearer down.

BERNARD STAMM >BORN TO BE AT SEA

Bernard Stamm's life has been linked with the sea since the age of two; aconviction that he "was born to be at sea" was confirmed during aspectacular and successful, singlehanded racing debut in the Mini classduring the mid-1990’s.

Amongst his incredible ocean endeavours are the stories of him building aPierre Rolland designed Open 60 and setting two new records despitehaving retired from the Vendée Globe due to autopilot failure and alsoduring the 2004 Transat, after his keel detached completely, he boarded atug and returned to head the salvage operation, even making thedangerous dive beneath the boat to cut away the mast and rigging.

During the VELUX 5 OCEANS Bernard set a pace that none of the fleetcould match, racing with skill and conviction across the oceans atbreathtaking speed and defending his title.

Bernard Stamm is currently sailing the Vendée Globe in his Open 60 andhas chosen Henri Lloyd to protect him from the elements: “I’ve done all myround the world races with them. I’m convinced they’re the best.”

My dad has always been involved in sailing, he tookpart in the 1973-74 Whitbread Round the WorldRace, so I guess it was in the family!

I learnt to sail at the age of 8 in Restronguet,Cornwall and what started out as a hobby soonbecame a real passion. There came a point where Ihad to make a decision about whether this was whatI wanted to do professionally, and for me it was thenatural decision.

We are very lucky that we have a good system inplace through the RYA to make sure that those withthe talent and passion at a young age are coachedand supported. In terms of popularity within thegeneral public, sailing can often be treated as aminority sport. Football, rugby and motor sports tendto dominate the sports pages in the UK.

But I hope that with the Olympics and the success ofBritish sailors in other events, sailing’s profile will beraised and we will start to widen the audience forthe sport. I think it is also about education; manypeople see sailing as an elitist sport and that if theydon’t live by the sea they can’t get involved. Thissimply isn’t the case, but it will be a slow process toget that message into the general consciousness.

Some of my greatest sailing heroes made their markin Olympic sailing; people such as Paul Elvstrøm whowon an amazing four gold medals at consecutiveOlympics is a real inspiration, Russell Coutts went onfrom winning Olympic gold to win the America’sCup. Outside of sailing I would say MichaelSchumacher, he has achieved a phenomenal amountwithin one sport. I recently met Lewis Hamilton, hejoined us onboard HUGO BOSS for the JPMorganAsset Management Round the Island Race, it was a

totally new environment for him and he loved thechallenge. He has a huge amount of determinationand focus which is rare at such a young age, but itwas fantastic to be around him and talk to anotherathlete about their sport and how they deal with thepressures and challenges within their own field.

Henri Lloyd have supported me from the age of 18through all my sailing achievements. Our relationshipis now more than a partnership, I consider myselfpart of the Henri Lloyd family.

What I look for in clothing is something that enablesyou to move freely around the boat, something thatyou don’t notice, once it’s on it works, you can forgetabout it and focus on winning. Different clothingsystems are required in the varied racingenvironments and climates that I compete in aroundthe world, the Henri Lloyd selection is varied andadaptable for all conditions.

Designing the Ben Ainslie JuniorRange with Henri Lloyd has beenvery fulfilling. I am very lucky to beable to do what I love the most as afull time job and wanted theopportunity to be able to inspireyoung sailors.

It’s my hope that this generation ofyoung sailors will find the Ben AinslieRange practical, fun and comfortable.

The Henri Lloyd Phase Change Collection features theBlaze Jacket, Atmosphere Jacket, Vapour Jacket and the Sensor T. Each of these products can be wornindividually or with each other to provide you with a‘Built-In Climate Control System’ from base and mid layerthrough to an outer shell.

These products draw on a technology that consists oftemperature sensitive polymers. When the temperaturefalls, the polymers restrict the loss of heat and moistureto keep the wearer warm. Worn on its own, UV protection adds to its performance and versatility. Based on the‘Aussie Rules’ method, (there is a sliding scale from 0-50), all our products are 20-50 rated,while a Durable Water Repellency (DWR) finish helps shed surface water.

And Fast-Dri doesn’t just protect you against the elements, it protects you with an anti-microbial finish to help maintain freshness. Silver ions in the fabric repel bacteria,stopping it from forming.

Sensor THenri Lloyd's Phase Change Collection continues into the next-to-skin products. As the thermally mapped panels in the Sensor Twick away moisture the yarns lengthen. This opens up thestructure of the knit making the garment more breathable. This accelerates the drying time and keeps the wearer morecomfortable throughout a wider range of activities and climaticconditions. The Sensor T also features an anti-microbial finishwith odour control and the high stretch fabric ensures themaximum range of movement.

The base layer is designed to be lightweight and,unlike a regular cotton T-shirt, wicks moisture awayfrom your body to keep you dry and comfortable.

When considering sailing clothing, many people think only of theouter layer because it is the most visible. Often the layers underneathand next to the skin are given little thought. This is a mistake.However good your outer protection, you’ll compromise its performancewithout proper base and mid layers.

+The mid layer provides the essential layer ofwarmer air and protection from wind and water.

The outer layer will be guided by your sailingactivity. When choosing new clothing, always try ongarments with the appropriate amount of thermallayers underneath.

However, on the rare occasions where a product is found to be defective due to faulty manufacture or materials, we promise to replace or repair free of charge at our discretion.

Garment Care – The Henri Lloyd range uses a wide range of fabric technologies to ensure a high levelof garment performance and comfort. To maintain the performance of the garment, please refer to thewashing instructions printed on the label inside your garment. Use pure liquid soap only; do not useany fabric softeners or biological washing powders. If you need any further assistance, please contactyour local Henri Lloyd dealer or email Henri Lloyd customer services [email protected] between washing your sailing clothing, it is important to remember that salt is a desiccant and willattract moisture. Consequently, all foul weather gear should be rinsed periodically using fresh water (if available) to prevent salt from accumulating. This will reduce the cold, clammy feeling when first putting the garment on and will significantly increase the level of comfort for the wearer. When youhave finished using the garments and before stowing them away, ensure they are thoroughly dried.Do not use direct heat or leave exposed to strong sunlight when drying.

Garment Repairs – Through normal wear and tear, there are occasions when a garment may needrepairing. Should this occur, we recommend the repair takes place as soon as possible to avoid any further damage. All garments sent for repair must be clean. Please include a note with your name,return address, daytime phone number or e-mail. Our Customer Services Department will be happy to recommend the best course of action. We can usually carry out repairs at reasonable cost at the Henri Lloyd factory.
