Ameena was one of more than 5,600 babies born at Sunshine Hospital last year

We are building a new hospital in the heart of Melbourne’s west to meet the growing needs of our community. Help us deliver the hospital that families in the west deserve.

All expectant parents hope for a healthy baby, but sometimes newborns require specialised treatment.

For families caring for a premature or very ill newborn, being able to stay close during this crucial time is of vital importance.

Hospitals don’t usually top the list as favourite places to visit – especially for children. And waiting around can be the hardest part.

Waiting for treatment can be a stressful time for children and their parents. Having play spaces and positive distractions can really help to pass the time.

Chances are many of our children will require hospital treatment at least once in their lives.

When you’re a child, coming to hospital for treatment can be a scary experience. Our new hospital will allow kids to be kids and help create happy memories.

we need your help

our challengeSince the current Sunshine Hospital was opened in 1990, the population in western Melbourne has more than doubled in size.

Melbourne’s west is one of the fastest growing areas in Australia with one of the highest birth rates. Birth numbers at Sunshine Hospital alone are set to increase from current levels of around 5,600 babies per year to over 7,200 by 2026 – or more than 20 babies per day!

This increase in demand, coupled with the large proportion of children growing up in the region, means there will be an ongoing need for appropriate women’s and children’s health services.

Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital

To meet this growing demand, the new Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital is nearing completion, co-located at Western Health’s Sunshine Hospital.

Due to open in mid-2019, the new hospital will bring together inpatient and outpatient women’s and children’s services under the one roof and enable more women and families in Melbourne’s west to give birth and access services closer to home.

The hospital families deserve

For many people, a visit to hospital can be a daunting and stressful experience.

Our vision is to provide the very best care in an environment that makes patients and their families feel comfortable.

This new hospital will be a family-friendly environment, offering a positive healthcare experience. It is what families in our community deserve.

Honouring the legacy of Joan Kirner

The new Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Sunshine is named after Victoria’s first female Premier Joan Kirner, in recognition of her work advocating for the rights of women and children, particularly in Melbourne’s west.

This new specialist facility will deliver the healthcare needs for growing families in Melbourne’s west. At nine stories, this building is already a landmark on the horizon, and will become a recognised and respected facility for many years to come.

When it opens, this hospital will greatly increase the capacity for family health services in Melbourne’s west, and will include:

expanded maternity wards, with up to 64 maternity beds over two full floors of the hospital;

20 labour delivery rooms;

4 operating theatres;

a maternal foetal health unit and specialist women’s health clinics;

a full floor children’s ward, with 32 beds, many of them in single room layouts;

separate clinics for children’s health services;

a special care nursery with 39 special care cots and humidicribs; and

the ability to care for very sick babies onsite, keeping families together at this important time.

The construction of the new Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital will ensure that Western Health can continue to care for families in our community well into the future.
