Operation

Installing Drills

Insert the drill into the chuck jaws with about1" insertion. When using a small drill do notinsert it so far that the jaws touch the flutes of

the drill. Make sure that the drill is centered inthe chuck before tightening the chuck with thekey.

Positioning the Workpiece

Always place a piece of wood (or plywood) onthe table. This will prevent "splintering" ormaking heavy burrs on the underside of theworkpiece as the drill breaks through. The woodshould contact the left side of the column.

Using the Vise

For the small workpiece that cannot be clampedto the table, use a drill press vise. The vise mustbe clamped or bolted to the table. Always use aback-up piece of scrap wood to cover the table. This protects both the table and the drill bit.

Basic Operation

Place material to be drilled in such as way as tocome into contact with the left side of thecolumn. This prevents the material fromspinning.

If the work piece is not large enough to comeinto contact with the column, use a clamp ordrill press vise that is securely fastened tothe table! Failure to comply may causeserious injury!

Feed the bit into the material with only enoughforce to allow the drill bit to work. Feeding tooslowly may cause burning of the workpiece.Feeding too quickly may cause the motor to stopand/or the drill bit to break.

Generally speaking, the smaller the drill bit, thegreater the RPM required. Wood requires higherspeeds than metal. Metal is usually drilled atslower speeds.

In dusty environments, frequently blow out anydust that accumulates inside the motor.

Maintenance

Before any intervention on the machine, disconnect it from the electrical supply by

pulling out the plug or switching off the mainswitch! Failure to comply may cause seriousinjury.

A coat of automobile-type wax applied to thetable and column will help to keep the surfacesclean.

If the power cord is worn, cut, or damaged inany way, have it replaced immediately.

Lubrication All of the ball bearings are packed with grease atthe factory. They require no further lubrication.

Periodically lubricate the gear, rack, tableelevation mechanism, the splines (grooves) inthe spindle, and the teeth of the quill with a #2tube grease.

Electrical

115 Volt Operation

Referring to Figure 15:

As received from the factory, your drill press isready to run at 115-volt operation. This drillpress, when wired for 115 volt, is intended foruse on a circuit that has an outlet and a plug thatlooks like the one illustrated in (A). A temporaryadapter, which looks like the adapter shown in(B), may be used to connect this plug to a two-pole receptacle if a properly grounded outlet isnot available. The temporary adapter shouldonly be used until a properly grounded outletcan be installed by a qualified electrician. Thisadapter is not applicable in Canada. The greencolored rigid ear, lug, or tab, extending from theadapter, must be connected to a permanentground such as a properly grounded outlet box.

Figure 15

230 Volt Operation

Referring to Figure 16:

If 230V, single-phase operation is desired, thefollowing instructions must be followed:

1. Disconnect the machine from the powersource.

2. The JET drill press motor has fournumbered leads that are factory connectedfor 115V operation, as shown in (A). For

Grounding Instructions

This tool must be grounded while in use toprotect the operator from electric shock.

In the event of a malfunction or breakdown, grounding provides a path of least resistance forelectric current to reduce the risk of electricshock. This tool is equipped with an electriccord having an equipment-grounding conductorand a grounding plug. The plug must beplugged into a matching outlet that is properlyinstalled and grounded in accordance with alllocal codes and ordinances.

Do not modify the plug provided. If it will not fitthe outlet, have the proper outlet installed by aqualified electrician.

Improper connection of the equipment-grounding conductor can result in a risk ofelectric shock. The conductor, with insulationhaving an outer surface that is green with orwithout yellow stripes, is the equipment-grounding conductor. If repair or replacement ofthe electric cord or plug is necessary, do not

connect the equipment-grounding conductor to alive terminal.

Check with a qualified electrician or servicepersonnel if the grounding instructions are notcompletely understood, or if in doubt as towhether the tool is properly grounded. Use onlythree wire extension cords that have three-pronggrounding plugs and three-pole receptacles that

accept the tool’s plug.

Repair or replace a damaged or worn cordimmediately.

Extension Cords

Make sure your extension cord is in goodcondition. When using an extension cord, besure to use one heavy enough to carry thecurrent your machine will draw. An undersizedcord will cause a drop in the line voltageresulting in power loss and overheating. Thetable following shows the correct size to use

depending on the cord length and nameplateampere rating. If in doubt, use the next heaviergauge. Remember, the smaller the gaugenumber, the heavier the cord.
