The Halle Building was originally built in 1910 to house The Halle Brother’s Co. Department Store.
By 1986 the building was converted into its current use with rentable office space. Through
research of the Halle Building and the city of Cleveland it was decided the best use for this space
would be a DINNER THEATRE. Since the Halle Building is located within the PlayhouseSquare
District with a large variety of restaurants nearby, a dinner theatre could be a positive asset to the
area. The upscale dinner theatre will be a place for guest to have dinner and watch a show
without changing their location.

THE CONCEPT: INTENSITY, IMMERSIVE, ANTICPATION
Intensity can be used to describe a variety of thoughts, actions and emotions. It is the state of curiosity
and anticipation, waiting for something to happen. It is the exhilaration one feels during a thunderstorm or
while bungee jumping. Intensity being completely immersed in your surroundings. Intensity means being filled,
almost to the point of overwhelming. Intensity is created through contrast, expecting the unexpected.
The graphic above shows how intensity, immersive and anticipation interrelate to create one cohesive conceptual thought.

Throughout the space there are a variety of aspects
used to build anticipation and create an immersive at-
mosphere. In the ENTRY portion of the space, the guest
experiences an undulating 3form ceiling, forcing the
guest to interact with the space in specific ways.

intensity. Mostly caused by the performance, but the theatre space is meant to support and at times

Through the EXIT of the dinner theatre the guest maintains a heightened level of intensity and excitement from the performance, this is
maintained through the design of the lobby.
The thrust stage within the theatre
allows guests to be seated on three
sides of the stage, thus creating a
more immersive experience. Custom
booths ensure that each audience
member has an unobstructed view
of the stage. The intimate setting
of the theatre allows the audience
to experience the intensity of the
performance.

This solution for LaunchHouse provides multiple collaboration areas
for different companies to interact and network. It also provides many
different types and sizes of offices, including a fabrication lab, for
the various startups to grow their ideas. The accelerator space is the
“heart” of the space to allow the more developed companies to mentor
the startups with the highest potential.

Dopo La Pioggia
The name of the store, Dopo La Pioggia means “after the rain” in Italian, this translated to the
concept of creating a fresh, naturalistic, and contemporary atmosphere for its users. The group
added an exterior staircase, providing added interest and curiosity from the street. The group
was assigned the first floor, which contained women’s clothing and accessories. A fashion run-
way was created to peak the curiosity of customers. Custom shelving and display systems were
created to contribute to the natural atmosphere of the space.

Azalea Tower
The concept focused on an interplay between organic and modern by utilizing organic and
geometric shapes along with naturalistic materials to create a space that intrigues the elderly
and stimulates their mind. This project focused on the different health needs of the elderly by
selecting finishes with high contrast and low glare, and adding extra lighting to the space. Red
was also chosen because it is one of the most visible and preferred colors to the elderly.

Through research it was discovered that animals become very uneasy and anxious at pet
centers. This focused the design around creating a comforting and relaxing atmosphere for
the animal. This was achieved through the color scheme, minimal small details, cloud shapes
throughout and the use of Comfort Zone air fresheners that emit dog appeasing pheromones
that relax the animal.

When exploring different elements found throughout fashion, the zipper was very intriguing in the
way that it moves and interlocks. The zipper was the major inspiration in this project as can be seen
through the focal stair, roof, skylights and facades, all which mimic various aspects of the zipper.

Motifs and Patterns
A motif was created through the process of creating line drawings of the faucet to the left, shapes
where then chosen from the line drawings to create eight different motifs. One motif was then
chosen to create a pattern.

The photographs are based on the idea of a house as a nest for the people that occupy it, and that
a house is nestled into its environment by being designed around its surroundings.
