east o the divide, those threatsbeing ice jamming and snowmeltflooding. Freeze-up jams occurwhen prolonged sub-reezingweather allows an ice cover to

develop on a river or stream. Break-up jams occur when the reezingweather is ollowed by significantwarming, allowing the ice to breakree and flow downstream.  Jams typically orm as iceaccumulates at obstacles suchas bends in the rivers or bridgesupports. Water can quickly backup behind the jam causing localizedflooding. Jams can release veryquickly, and flash flooding is ofenthe result as the water stored behindthe ice jam then rushes downstream. When snowmelt, rain or rain on

snow occur in tandem with thebreakup o river ice, the result isofen more intense flooding.  Ice jams and ice ormation inrivers and creeks can lead to floodingin western Montana starting as earlyas December. Freeze-up and break-up ice jams have been documented

in the months o December, Januaryand February. More extensiveflooding results rom a combinationo ice jams and rain on snow runoff.  Snowmelt flooding occurs as

warmer spring temperatures meltsnow over the mountains and therunoff overfills creeks and rivers.Snowmelt flooding may be worsenedby spring rains alling over themountain snow pack adding to thewater flowing into creeks and rivers.  Snowmelt and the breakup oriver ice ofen occur in tandem.Ice jams respond to fluctuatingriver flows associated withsnowmelt and, as a result, canintensiy snowmelt flooding. TeNational Weather Service providesextensive inormation on snowpack

conditions across the country. Awide array o ground, airborne andsatellite observations are used tomonitor snow conditions. Your localNational Weather Service officeroutinely provides flood orecasts, whether or not they are related tosnowmelt or ice jams.

O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Treeby Bruce Auchly, FWP   Christmas is so over. Te holiday cards are in thelandfill by now. Most o the toys are broken or ignored.Ten there is the Christmas tree. Gone, but dependingon how it was disposed o, maybe not orgotten.  For years, fish biologists working with anglers andother volunteers have bundled and weighted donatedevergreens to sink in reservoirs and lakes or use asfish habitat.  Te city o Helena sinks thousands o weightedChristmas trees each year in Canyon Ferry Reservoir, which considering the size o the reservoir is a like adrop in a minnow bucket.

Real Christmas trees that is, not the artificial onesand nothing flocked, thank you. And what is thatflocked stuff, anyway?  In north central Montana, fisheries biologistssay the sunken trees provide spawning habitat orsubstrate spawners so they can drop their egg skeinsand leave. ranslation: the trees provide a spot whereperch, primarily, can deposit their eggs.  Yellow perch, not native to Montana, lay theireggs in long sticky threads, or skeins. Te skeins areactually long gelatinous strands with accordion-likeolds. Te skeins can reach seven eet in length and

contain about 200,000 eggs, though most are muchshorter with something like 25,000 eggs.  Shortly afer ice out in early spring when watertemperatures are in the 44-52 degree range, maleand emale perch head to spawning sites. Perch seekout spawning sites in shallow water with submerged vegetation. A emale will expel her eggs and a maleswimming close by will ertilize them by releasing acloud o milt. Ten they swim away.  Te skein o eggs alls until ideally it drapes oversubmerged vegetation like a discarded Christmas tree, and eight to 10 days later tiny perch emerge and drifaway. Perch eggs that all into the mud and silt on thebottom ofen smother and die.  Perch are the target because they are a vital ood

source or walleye.  In iber Reservoir north o Great Falls, the effortis more modest than at Canyon Ferry Reservoir: about800 trees annually versus 5,000. Tat’s because iber ismore remote and a hauling company has to be hired tobring the discarded trees to water.  Canyon Ferry next to Helena provides a betterand environmentally sound practice or the city to riditsel o evergreens rather than chipping them up ormulch or the landfill.  No matter where it happens, the practice is thesame. rees are bundled, usually two to a pair oconcrete cinder blocks. Ten the bundles are hauledonto the ice in early March, as close as saely possibleto ice out.  Once the ice breaks up, the bundles sink andnature takes over. While the needles will all off afera year underwater, the branches can last 10 years ormore. Tat’s important or a reservoirlike iber that has very little submerged vegetation.  So next year, don’t just throw that Christmas treeout by the curb. Find a place to donate it and wish aperch Merry Christmas.

    REMODELED HOME CLOSE TO S

How’s that for coincidence?  A ew months back, young Mr. Snowden let theAmerican people know they were being spied upon bythe NSA (National Security Agency). Te first coupleo weeks it filled all the news outlets, and dependingon which one was doing the reporting he was anythingrom a true patriot, to a traitor. Ten things quieteddown and bit, and there were other things to write andtalk about.

Well, the other day I read a story about the NSA, inwhich a “Secret Court” says it’s okay or them to listenin on your phone calls, monitor your e-mails, andyour internet activity.......all in the name o NationalSecurity........

Sounded to me like NSA really stood or Nazi’sStill Around. Tey had neig hbors spying on neighbors, but in the electronic age that’s not needed anymore.

It was first reported that the NSA was monitoringVerizon, so to test it out I called a riend out ostate who uses that service, we lightly discussed this“monitoring” and weren’t sure how it would all work.I suggested that maybe there were Key Words thatwould trigger a closer look. So as the conversationprogressed, I used the word “BOMB”, said something

about blowing something up and beore we could getmuch urther, we were disconnected.

We got reconnected, finished our visit, butstrangely enough, every time we cal l each other now, itgets interrupted at some point.........coincidence?

I don’t like this “Secret Court” deal in the slightest,so I convened my own court and ound the NSA guilt yo a number o Constitutional violations. Te courtwill pass sentence at a later date.

I don’t know whether I’m just too old ashioned,or have a totally wrong outlook, but I think that to livein this Country, and enjoy the reedoms g ranted by theConstitution, you kind o have to take a risk. You haveto understand that things like 9/11 can happen, and

although it was a sad day, it did unite the Country andadversaries became compatriots.

I don’t need “Big Brother” taking care o me, it’sone o the reasons or the S econd Amendment. I don’tear another 9/11, but what I do ear is a Congressthat tries to rescind the 22nd Amendment, or worse, declare Marshall Law.

Who cut the cheese?Beans, beans, the musical fruit.

The more you eat, the more you toot.

The more you toot, the better you feel,

So let’s have beans at every meal!

So, why are beans known as “the musical ruit”?Everyone knows that beans make you art. It’s somethingthat’s basically assumed to be a act o lie.  Beans not only contain a lot o fiber, they alsocontain resistant starches, which are not easily brokendown. Most varieties o beans contain a particular

sugar called oligosaccaride, and is not easily digestible.Tis means they end up getting digested by bacterialermentation in your intestines. Tis ermentationprocess results in gas.  And when it comes to flatulence, bean type matters.Tree bean consumption eeding studies rom Nutrition Journal  proved this.  In the first study, they had participants eat 1/2 cupo beans (either black eyed peas or pinto), or 1/2 cup ocarrots as a control. Tey could eat them alone or putthem in a recipe as they wished, or 8 weeks. Becauseo the blacked-eyed peas and pinto beans in this study, they reerred to it as the BEP study.

In the second study, they did the same 8 weektreatment, only this time with 1/2 cup o vegetarian

baked beans (with the carrots as control). And the finalstudy was either 1/2 can o pinto beans or a control soupper day or 12 weeks. All the patients were told not toeat any other beans during the course o the study.  Only 19% o patients complained o arting aferblack-eyed peas, while 47-50% complained the magicalruit gave them too many toots when they ate pintobeans or baked beans (one unortunate carrot eatingcontrol did complain o really bad gas). But this wasonly in the first week. Farting reports dropped off inweek two and by the end o the 8 weeks, they might aswell have been eating carrots. Farting occurs most ofenwhen people increase fiber rom a low fiber diet, andgoes away as you get used to it.  It’s important to note that they weren’t just studyingarts here. Tis study was part o a larger study on theeffects o beans on heart disease risk, and they oundsignificant improvements in things like lipoproteinprofiles and cholesterol. So 1/2 cup o beans per daycould definitely do some good, without causing toomuch bad air.  Beans, beans, they’re good or the heart.  Te more you eat the more you...

    Bean Factoids

    • Beans are the only cultivatedplants that actually enrich, rather than deplete, the soilduring the growing process. How is this possible?Legumes have nodules ontheir roots that add nitrogen tothe soil instead of using it up.

    • Cooked beans can be frozenfor up to six months. Thawthem overnight in the fridgebefore reheating.

    • Bean carbohydrates havebeen proven to drasticallyimprove the stability of bloodsugar levels in diabetics. Many adult-onset diabeticshave been able to greatlyreduce or eliminate theirdependence on insulinthrough diets containingsubstantial amounts of beans.

    • In ancient Rome, so esteemedwere legumes that the fourleading families took theirnames from them: Lentullus(lentil), Piso (pea), Cicero(chickpea), and Fabius (fava).

    • Beans, their kin, and theproducts made from them—such as tofu and tempeh—are the most concentratedsource of plant-based proteinin the world. Between 6 and11 percent of a cooked bean’sweight is protein.

    • Some ancient cults whobelieved in reincarnation, most notably the monasticfollowers of Pythagoras, thought human souls traveledthrough the stems of beanplants to Hades, where theywere then transmogrifiedfor their next lives; it was

therefore a sin to eat beans oreven walk among bean plants.

    • A 1907 resolution introducedby Minnesota Senator KnuteNelson states that while theSenate is in session, beansoup must be served daily, regardless of the weather.
