The View I was watching Jeopardy! when I was told Monica Peine needed the sacrament of the anointing. I was told that it could wait until the end of Jeopardy! I asked where she was, and was told she was at The View. The View? What, is Whoopie Goldberg there?

In my two and a half years at this assignment, I never heard of this place. I have been to Twin Rivers and the Gardens (nee Diamond Rehab, Angel’s Care), but what is the View and how do I get there? I googled it and saw the map where it led me east toward the city limits of Cannon Falls on Highway 17. I saw a bunch of houses thinking this can’t be it, passing it, but once I realized that the house number matched the address, I turned around and parked and walked in the door. It still looked like a residence, but there was someone there to lead me to Monica. Monica’s family was there in a sitting room next to the bedroom. We went into the bedroom and I gave Monica the sacrament. Three days later, Monica Peine was dead.

Since I did the funeral for Monica’s husband, Henry in New Trier, the family wanted me to do Monica’s. So, I met with them to pick out readings and to tell me more about Monica. At the end, I asked them their impression of the View. They were full of compliments on their experience with the View. After Henry died, the family knew that Monica would have an extremely difficult time fending for herself. They searched for some place that was homey but able to provide for her needs, and that would make her transition to such a facility easy as possible. The Gardens did not fit that template they were looking for. They found the View. As a bonus, they also found that the View was less expensive.

There were so many things they were impressed with. It was a safe environment. They felt the compassion that the staff had for both the residents and the family. The staff was well versed with compassion to enter into difficult discussions, such as end-of-life issues and hospice care. The View assists people with a variety of health related issues—physical rehabilitation, memory issues, stroke, diabetes, and anything else that may require medical supervision. If emergency care is needed, management and staff stays with the resident until family can be present.

What was most impressive was that there was a sense of family. Social contacts are maintained through visits with other residents as well as family and friends. Birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays are celebrated. After all, the View is home.

The one thing that saddened the Peine family was that this treasure of a facility was not filled to capacity. They realized that if they do not have a full house, it would be difficult to maintain the operation.

For my money, the View is doing the Lord’s work of mercy. “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you? And the king will say to them in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’” (Matthew 25:37-40) I think that passage best describes the motivation of the staff and management of the View. If the time ever came for me, I cannot think of a better place to go..—TB

Stewards Among Us

Wayne & Bernie Kieffer

Wayne has been a parishioner at St. Joseph’s since birth (75 years) and Bernie since their marriage in 1970. They have 4 sons, Mark, Kevin, Nick, Tim and his wife Molly, who have 2 children (twins).

Wayne has been very active at St. Joseph’s, serving as trustee, usher, lector and Eucharistic Minister.

Bernie is active with the choir, Eucharistic Adoration and funeral liturgy planner.

Together they led Renew, taught baptism class, served on committees when building the new addition, and very active in all the fundraisers.

“We learned a lot about the sacrament of Baptism by preparing and teaching to expectant parents. Renew taught us much about living our Catholic faith and teaching and witnessing the Word of God.”

Advice for those that want to be involved? “Sign up to work at the lunch stand at the Little Log House Power Show. It’s fun and a great opportunity to meet and work with fellow parishioners. Join the choir—no experience required. Praising the Lord in song is wonderful”.

“Volunteers are always needed and welcomed for all parish events.”

Sometimes I wonder what this world will look like when my children get to be my age. Everything seems to be changing so rapidly and much of that change doesn't seem to be for the good. I do think in some ways the Church is experiencing resurgence and a strengthening, but it will have to in the face of an increasing culture of atheism and selfishness.

Of course, I bet my parents wondered the same thing when I was a child. As much as things change, they remain the same. When Jesus gave his Sermon on the Mount, I would guess some parents there were having the same kind of worries. But Jesus proposed a way of life in the beatitudes that was coun-tercultural then and is countercultural now.

In his book, "Life of Christ," Fulton Sheen said this: "The Sermon on the Mount is so much at variance with all that our world holds dear that the world will crucify anyone who tries to live up to its values." Living a stewardship way of life means bringing the beatitudes into our daily lives in a profound way. However, it also means living in a way that others may not understand or they may even turn away from us because of it. But with the reward in the end being the kingdom of heaven, the choice is really a matter of life and death, eternally speaking. Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
