Resilience Skill of the Month: Activating Event, Thought, Consequences (ATC)

or Shaking up my Responses

Have you ever reacted to something in a way that wasn’t helpful? Let’s look at how people can have different reactions to the same situation: What happened: Got a B on a math test. Positive Pat thinks Critical Chris thinks “Yes! I did so well!” “No! I did badly. It should have been an A.” Now think about how these two people will feel and what they will do next. A bit different, huh? Maybe Pat will feel happy and study more to keep the good grades coming. Maybe Chris will feel disappointed and stop trying in math class.

Have you figured out what ATC is? Activating event = What happened. (In the example above, the activating event is they got a B.) Thoughts = What you think in the heat of the moment. (In the example above. Pat thinks “I did so well!”) Consequences = How you feel and what you do. (In the example above, Pat is happy and will keep trying in class.)

Page 3: January 2021 - img1.wsimg.com

3

Now that we understand what ATC is, let’s look at how it can help.

ATC is a way that we can CONTROL our thoughts which will help us to feel better emotions and act in a more productive way.

Sooooo….

When we use ATC, we are mindful of our initial thoughts and know that we can change our thoughts to get a better outcome.

For example,

Activating Event Sports practice went badly

Thoughts It’s my fault. I’m a terrible player.

Consequences Emotion: Sad, disappointed Reaction: Quit the team

NEW Thoughts I did my best and practice helps me improve.

NEW Consequences Emotion: Optimistic Reaction: Try harder next time

Use the next page to become more aware of how you respond.

We can’t change what happened, but we CAN change how we think about it.

Are you ready to shake it up? Use this grid to explore how think and react.

Create an Obstacle orNinja Training Course

Toss your couch pil lows, bedpil lows, sheets , mats , hula hoops,jump-ropes, blocks, or whateverelse you have in your house into

the middle of the room. Addsome yarn or crepe paper to

make a make-shift “ laser” courseto climb through. You can usechairs and small furniture too.Time each other to see who isfastest , or try to improve your

own time.

Have Outdoor Fun -Indoors!

You can have a snowball battlein the warmth of your house

using rolled up socks!

Create a Scavenger Hunt

Choose who will lead the scavenger hunt .They can have the other family members

find a bunch of random things—somethingred, something small and square, a piece ofstring, money, and three puzzle pieces . Or ,they could hide items and give everyone a

list of hints ,

(Pro tip : scavenger hunts are more fun inthe dark with a flashlight !)

Write , Choreograph, and Act Out a Play or

Musical .You can also make costumes, apply stage makeup, design

your set , and record yourperformance!

Have parents or other familymembers be your l ive

audience, or video call for alarger crowd. .

Tape Games!Got painters ’ tape or maskingtape? You are in for a goodtime! Check out these ideason whatmomslove.com for ahuge l ist of tape games, fromcreating a race car track onyour floor or carpet , tomaking a spider web across adoorway and tossing objectsat it to get “caught” in theweb.

Creating a Vision BoardLet’s take a moment to SHAKE OFF 2020 and start anew in 2021. What would you like to accomplish? A fun way to lay out your goals for 2021 is through a vision board. A vision board is a visual representation of the things you want to accomplish or acquire. Having a vision board helps to keep you motivated and focused to work toward your goals! So, how do you make a vision board? Start with thinking about what goals you’d like to accomplish in 2021. Use the attached Goal setting worksheet to work through the goals. But, what if you don’t know what goals you have? Or you’re unsure where to start, that’s ok! Below are some questions that can help spark some ideas: • What are some of your favorite things?• What are your favorite

activities or hobbies?• What makes you

happy?• If you could choose a

topic or subject to study, what would that be?

• What kind of school experience would you like to have?

• If you could choose what kind of school (college or university) you could go to, where would you like to go?

• What would you like to do when you grow up?

Page 10: January 2021 - img1.wsimg.com

10

• If you could create your own business, what would that be?

• If you could design your dream life/house/car/spaceship, what would it look like?

• How much money would you like to earn?• Do you have a dream vacation? Where would

that be?• What kind of friends would you like to surround

yourself with?• Do you want to learn a new skill? What would

that be?• What kind of sports would you like to do? • If you could have a special skill to help people,

what would that be?• Who do you admire that you would like to meet in person?• What kind of difference do you want to make in this world? Once you have finished this worksheet and identified your goals, start

gathering visual items that go along with your goals.

What you will need:• Poster Board (any size)• Magazines and pictures that represent your goals• Scissors• Crayons, markers, or colored pencils• Glue, glue sticks or tape• Poster board letters (optional)

Once you have all your supplies, let your creativity run wild! Paste the pictures that go along with your goals, write words of inspiration and encouragement to achieve your goals. Once you are done, hang it up where you can see it each day and visualize accomplishing those goals!

Shake it up January. Volunteer. Serve.

Here’s an idea everyone can get behind. Shake off the old year and start the new year with the purpose of helping others. It won’t take long to realize that our communities need us. There are shelters which need help building furniture, there are elders who need assistance picking up groceries, and there are parks that need cleaning. So this year, let’s gather our family together, roll up our sleeves, and help make our community better. There’s actually a day for serving. Martin Luther King Day of Service. This year, the federal holiday celebrating Dr. King’s birthday will be on Monday, 18 January 2021. It marks the 26th anniversary of the official holiday, signed into law in 1986 by President Ronald Reagan. It also marks the 51st anniversary of the first observance honoring Dr King’s birthday, held in 1969 in Atlanta. The Martin Luther King Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service. In 1994, Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act which calls for “all Americans, from all walks of life, to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems. The intent of the Day is to empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, create solutions to social problems, and move us closer to Dr King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.” Instead of a day off from work or school, Congress asks all Americans to celebrate Dr King’s legacy by turning community needs into citizen action.” Over the decades, participation has steadily grown. Hundreds of thousands of Americans each year engage in projects that include tutoring and mentoring children, painting schools and senior centers, delivering meals, building homes, and finding other ways to improve their communities. What will you do this year? “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” ~ Martin Luther King, Jr. Our challenge is clear for 2021. Make this the year of service. Serve others. Find what needs to be done for a neighbor, what needs to be done for the homeless, what needs to be done for co-workers, friends, and family. And, do it. Serve. Need help getting started? AmeriCorp offers a volunteer search option which helps you find opportunities in your community. Or, you have a volunteer project you need help with? You can register it with AmeriCorp and they’ll get the word out. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was a minister, civil

rights leader, and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.

King believed in equal rights and worked very hard

for the benefit of African Americans. He said that all

people should be treated equally and with respect.

Nine years after his death, the United State honored

him with the Congressional Medal of Freedom and

declared his birthday a national holiday.
