Fifth Annual Softball Tournament

Sun City Festival SoftballClub will hold its 5th An-

nual Softball Tournament,January 22 through Febru-

ary 2 at the Del E. WebbSoftball Field. There will

be teams from severalWest Valley Communties

playing each day. Teamswill compete in three skilllevels. Tier 3 games will be

held the 22-24th startingat 10 am, Tier 1 games

will be held the 28-30thstarting at 8:30 am, and

Tier 2 games will be held

on the 29-31st starting at8:30 am. Come cheer onour teams!

Throughout the series

of games there will be aconcession tent offering

Rose and Ronmoved to SunCity Festival

Rose grew up on the south side of Chicagoand Ron on the north side. They actuallymet at Saint Josephs College in Indianaduring a dance mixer when Ron acted as awing man for his best friend! Five yearslater they were married and still laugh todayabout how they met.

They were impressed with the Phoenix areawhile visiting Roses brother Pat who livesin Sun City Grand. Pat suggested that theylook at a new Del Webb development justa few miles west. As soon as they droveinto the community they knew that it was theplace for them..... a retirement communitywith a vacation atmosphere.

Rose is a registered nurse currently workingin the Dysart School District. She plans to

retire at the end of the 2014 school year.Ron is ofcially retired after working 32years at Sears. He also worked part time for

the Finish Line and Goodwill while looking fortheir dream retirement location.

Rose is currently active with FABs, LadyPutters, Brew Crew and the Hiking Club. Ronis a member of the Softball, Hiking and BrewCrew Clubs. Hes also been known to travelthe Phoenix area taking advantage of themany golf courses located here. When Roseretires, they plan to travel more extensivelythrough Arizona and the surrounding states.

They have two children and one recentgrandchild. Their daughter, Rebecca,resides in Orlando and works for Disney.We love taking vacations at the DisneyParks and take advantage of Rebeccasdiscounts. Their son, Steve, resides inGilberts, Illinois and works for Chicago basedAccenture. He and his wife are the proudparents of Nathan, who was born in March2012. Naturally, Rose and Ron believeNathan is the best looking and smartestgrandchild they know.

Dont Hold The Handles

New

The treadmill is a great piece of exercise equipment. But, like every other piece

of tness equipment, a treadmill will yield maximal results only when used cor-

rectly. The most common misuse of the treadmill involves holding the handles.Regardless of the users age, weight, or goals, holding the handles on the tread-

mill signicantly reduces its effectiveness.

Of importance to many treadmill users is calorie burn. Byholding the handles during treadmill walking, the calorie

burn is reduced by 20-25%. Hands on the handles provides

assistance to keep pace with the belt on the treadmill. In-stead, lower the speed/grade and walk without assistance.

Then, you will be doing all the work necessary without anyassistance. In addition, the readout of calories burned will

be accurate when walking/running hands-free. The calorieburn indicator is based solely on the speed and grade at

which the treadmill runs. It doesnt know if someone is help-ing themselves by holding the handles.

Holding the treadmill handles does not mimic real walking. When we walk out-side, uphill or on a at surface, we have nothing to hold and have to do all the

work. Holding the handles with the treadmill at a 10% incline essentially negatesany benet from walking uphill. The body is leaned back at an angle almost

perpendicular to the angle of the treadmill. At that point, the walking might justas well be at. Walking uphill requires leaning forward into the hill. Holding the

treadmill handles prevents walking with a natural stride.

Changes to gait and posture are also side-effects of holding treadmill handles.

When holding the handles the stride is shortened to avoid foot contact with thefront cover on the treadmill. Also, holding the handles reduces the work done

by the erector spinae muscles. These muscles work to hold the spine uprightand stable while walking. Holding or leaning on the handles can actually lead to

weakening of the erector spinae. And, because holding the handles helps keepyou stable, balance skills may actually get worse since they are not consistently

and adequately challenged.

When walking, jogging, or running on a treadmill, holding the handles can actu-

ally cause a reduction in the quality of exercise results. Providing assistance,holding the treadmill handles alters the way we walk or run, reduces the amount

of work we do and can actually create injury and muscle weakness. If necessary,reduce the speed and incline so you are able to walk without assistance. This

applies to holding stationary handles or any part of the elliptical machine as well.
