THE SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, JANUARY 19,

WATER AND SPIRIT

Last Sunday, John baptized Jesus with water. This week John

asserts that Jesus is “the one who is going to baptize with the Holy

Spirit.” Soon we celebrate the fulfillment of this promise on the 50th

day of Easter: Pentecost. Ordinary Time is the working out of this

SJV CHOIR: Rehearsal this Thursday, January 23, at 7:00 pm in

the church. The choir will sing at the 10:30 am Mass on Sunday,

January 26.

Next week, we will take up the Collection for the Church in Latin

America. For many in Latin America and the Caribbean, a rising

secular culture, difficult rural terrain, and a shortage of ministers all

present obstacles to practicing the faith. Your support for the

collection provides lay leadership training, catechesis, priestly and

religious formation, and other programs to share our Catholic faith

THANK YOU TO MAUREEN AND JIM KRAIZEL: The Volunteer

Appreciation Party took place in the Father Kline Social Center last

Saturday after the 6:00 pm Mass. Over 200 parishioners attended Mass

celebrated by Father Johns and the Social which took place after

Mass. Everyone enjoyed the great appetizers and pizza provided by

Cater to You. Thank you to Glenn and Jeff for the great food and to

Maureen and Jim for providing such a good night for the generous

volunteers of the parish. We appreciate the hard work so many do to

make this parish such a good one and we are glad that you took the time

to come and meet some of your fellow volunteers.

This weekend there is no PSR as we allow our families time to celebrate

Martin Luther King Day. King’s legacy of respect for human rights, social

justice advocacy, and a call to recognize equality, all have had a great

impact on our society and offers us much food for thought and prayer.

PSR will resume on January 26 and grades 1-6 will begin the Called to

Protect program that is required by the Diocese.

Last Sunday evening our Confirmation candidates gathered for a wonderful

discussion of our Catholic call to serve others. A huge thank you to our

discussion panel, Lindsay Dunkel, Ali Manning, and Alex Spenik. Your

insights and example were truly inspiring! Our next Confirmation session

will take place on February 9 from 6:30-8:00 pm in the Church. At that

session we will begin to focus more on the spiritual preparation for

Confirmation as we discuss the role of the Holy Spirit and His gifts and

fruits. At the end of February, candidates will take part in a Confirmation

retreat given by SENT Ministries of Franciscan University. This will take

place in the Social Center on Saturday, February 29, from 10:00 am to

5:00 pm.

Confirmation candidates are reminded that all paperwork is now due.

Service project sheets and volunteer opportunity sheets should be turned in

as soon as you complete the activities.

A make up session for the First Communion parent meeting will take place

next Sunday, January 26, at Lake Catholic in the Atrium at 9:30 am. If you

were unable to attend the meetings on January 14, please join us. We will

have all materials, information, and instructions for you. If you have not

attended a meeting and are unable to attend the make up, please contact

The first of our First Communion Enrichment Evenings will be held on

Friday evening, January 31, at 6:30 pm in the Church. This special evening

is open to 2nd grade families and provides a great opportunity to explore the

Church and learn more about the Mass. No RSVP is required, and this

event will be repeated on February 7 for anyone who is unable to attend.

pantry got pretty well depleted

over the holidays. Items we have

the greatest need for at this time

are paper products (those items

that are taxable) paper towels,

kleenex, toilet paper (4 pack),

laundry detergent, etc. Many of

our clients receive assistance

from SNAP and taxable items

cannot be purchased with that

type of assistance.

Divorce Recovery for Catholics, an 8 Week

Support Group, designed to meet the needs of

those who are divorced or separated, is being held

at St. John Vianney Parish, 7575 Bellflower Rd.,

Mentor, from 7:00 - 9:00 pm, Thursday evenings, January 23 and runs

through March 5, 2020. It’s not too late to join! Sessions are

designed to offer direction, support, and the tools for coping with this life-

[email protected] There is no charge for this program, all

materials are provided, and it is open to people of all faiths.

The second encyclical of Francis’ pontificate is “Laudato Si,” on the

importance of caring for the environment. It is worth reading. In the

opening line, he quotes Saint Francis of Assisi, “Praise be to you, my

Lord.” In the words of this beautiful canticle, we are reminded that our

common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a

beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us. “Praise be to

you, my Lord, through our Sister, Mother Earth, who sustains us and

governs us, and who produces various fruit with colored flowers and

herbs.” This sister now cries out to us because of the harm we have

inflicted on her by our irresponsible use and abuse of the goods with

which God has endowed her. We have come to see ourselves as her

lords and masters, entitled to plunder her at will … we have forgotten

that we ourselves are dust of the earth, our very bodies are made up

of her elements, we breathe air and we receive life and refreshment

from her waters.

Dear Parishioners,

The Christmas Season is now over and we are

back into what is called “Ordinary Time” on the

liturgical calendar. We will remain in “Ordinary Time”

until February 26, when we celebrate Ash Wednesday

and begin the season of Lent. Thank you again to the

many parishioners who helped us to celebrate the

Christmas Season so well!

Pictured above are Rosie Rebol, William

Temple and Vayla Wheatley, the modern day “magi” as

they took a break in their journey in the gathering

space of the church on Epiphany Sunday two weeks

ago. Like the magi of old, the three of them spent

some time in the presence of the Christ Child and His

mother, Mary. Rosie’s expression captures the sense

of joy in finding the Christ Child, William’s serious look

expresses the realization that this child has come to

save us from our sins, and Vayla’s look of wonder

captures the mystery of the manifestation of Christ as

the Savior of all nations. May God bless them and all

the children of the parish as they learn so much from

their parents who place a high priority on the practice

of their Catholic faith each week. My prayer is that

more and more parents may do the same in this

coming year.

Speaking of parents, we have a Marriage and

Family Life Ministry at the parish and one of their

annual events to support family life is “We Believe in

Marriage Day.” The event will take place this year on

Saturday, February 15, the day after Saint Valentine’s

Day. Married couples are welcome to attend the 4:00

Mass that day to renew their marriage vows. The

Mass will be followed by a social, dinner and dancing in

the Father Kline Center until 10:00 pm. Tickets are

$20 per person and watch the bulletin next weekend

for information on how to RSVP and register for the

evening. As in past years, it should be a great

evening. Save the date on your calendars. Father

Dober will be the celebrant of the Mass.

Another annual event at the parish is the Celtic

Weekend and that will take place on Saturday, March

7, and Sunday, March 8. The Celtic Ball takes place at

the LaMalfa Party Center on Saturday evening and the

Hooley takes place at the Father Kline Center on

Sunday afternoon. Tickets for both events are

available by contacting Sheila Randel at 953.8954 or

[email protected]. The honorees this year are

Joe Dowd, Neil and Mariann Gallagher, and Judy

Bartel and Sr. Maureen Burke. Mike and Mary Amrine

are the recipients of the Father Kline Award. This will

be the last Celtic Ball and I am hoping for a record

crowd at the LaMalfa Center on Saturday evening.

The Hooley will continue to take place at the parish in

coming years and it is an event which typically sells out

by the 1st of March. We are looking for raffle baskets

(valued at $35+), items for baskets, and Silent Auction

items (valued at $250+). Do you have season tickets

to a CLE sports team, a gift card from Christmas which

you will not use or a handy appliance never used and

still in the original box, or something similar? If so,

The members of the 50+ Club are reminded of

the Annual Travel Show at 7:30 pm in the Father Kline

Center on this Thursday. John Latkovich from JKL

Tours will present the tentative events he has planned

for the 50+ Club in 2020. I saw some of his

suggestions and they look like they will be a lot of fun.

200 members in the group now. I came up with the

idea of a 50+ Club for our parish after visiting Saint

Mary Parish in Chardon where I saw a sign for one of

their newest organizations—”An Empty Nester” Club.

Like Mentor, Chardon has a large population of seniors

who now have more time to do things they could not do

earlier when they were working and raising a family. I

am glad that the 50+ Club is doing well and I am glad

that the same can be said of “Three Pillars.” This is

another new group at the parish and it is for young

couples or individuals and their children who wish to

develop bonds of friendship with fellow parishioners to

support faith and family life. They too are growing in

numbers and have a lot of good events planned for this

new year of 2020. Call Ali Manning for more

On this Saturday, January 25, at the 6:00

Mass, we will begin the celebration of Catholic Schools

Week. Some children from our parish school, All

Saints, will serve in many of the liturgical roles at that

Mass and the WILMAR, the Deimling Family Founders,

the Father Johns, Miller Family and the Walk in Faith

Scholarships will be awarded to some deserving

students after the Communion Rite. It is always a nice

liturgy and all are welcome to join us. There is a whole

week of activities at All Saints from this Monday to

Friday as the children and staff will celebrate their great

pride in their school. Check elsewhere in this bulletin

for information about the Open House opportunities at

the school, especially on Sunday, January 26, when

there will be a Free Pancake Breakfast there from

11:00 to 1:00. Have breakfast, meet the teachers, and

EDUCATION & FORMATION

ALL SAINTS SCHOOL OF SAINT JOHN VIANNEY

Classroom News- 2020 is off to a busy start for Room 8B! The students are wrapping up the second quarter

and are in the second round of MAP testing. The buzz about where they hope to attend high school is in the air.

They will be filling out the high school applications very soon and then they wait for the admission letters begin!

They will hear right around Valentine’s Day as to which high school they have been accepted. The students are

hoping to finish the academic year strong! In Math, the students are learning about graphing linear equations

and systems of equations. This can be very confusing at first. A chapter in geometry will begin soon. This will

get them ready for high school math. We are looking forward to meeting the 8th graders from St. Aloysius (our

Church in the City partner) and spending some time with them. It’s hard to believe the school year is half over

but there are still many 8th grade memories to make!

Students are officially back in the swing of things! The second quarter officially ended on January 17, which

means we are halfway through the school year. And no snow days yet?!

We’re gearing up for Catholic Schools Week which will kick off at the 6:00 pm Mass on January 25 at St. John

Vianney This week celebrates the blessings and benefits of attending Catholic schools, and adds a little

excitement to the long month of January.

Spotlight on 8th Grade Students:

My name is Gabe Girardi and I have been going to All Saints for seven years. All Saints is

cool because we have a lot of fun traditions. My favorite subject is science. In my free time, I

like to play football and basketball. Next year I would like to go to Lake Catholic, VASJ, or

Gilmore.

My name is Ivan Blazevic. I am an average 3.85 student with brown hair and brown eyes. I’m

about 5’3” and weigh about 96 pounds. I’m also a 13 year old young athlete who plays soccer. I

live in Eastlake but I never forget my origins from Croatia. I have one sister, Mia, who is in fifth

grade. My hobbies are soccer, hanging out with friends, and spending time with my family. I

am a cheerful person who cares for others when other people don’t. Outside of school, I am

funny, outgoing and generally friendly kid who loves to socialize with others and quite easy to

get along with. I am special in God’s eyes because I never leave a person behind.

We will have several Open Houses for those interested in learning

more about our school. We look forward to meeting you!

YOU'RE INVITED TO OUR NEW WOMEN'S STUDY!

For our new women's study we are reading the book, Our Friend

Faustina: Life Lessons in Divine Mercy. It is edited by Michele

Faehnle and Emily Jaminet, who are the authors of The Friendship

Project and Divine Mercy for Moms. They were the guest speakers

at our 2018 Women's Advent Brunch. The book is a collection of essays

by 11 modern women, all joined by their common friendship with one

extraordinary person, St. Faustina. Sharing tales of ordinary and

extraordinary graces with wit and laughter, these faith-filled women

explain how St. Faustina has loved them, mentored them, and inspired

them to live with mercy toward all.

We'll meet on the following Wednesdays at 7:00 pm in the Social Center:

February 5, March 4, and April 1. For our next session on

February 5, please read Chapters 3, 4 and 5. The book can be

purchased at www.inspirethefaith.com or other online retailers. We

hope you will join us!

The Women’s Prayer Group is

beginning its sixth year! We

have prayed intercessory

prayers for so many and God

has responded, overflowing in

His great love and mercy! Our

first meeting in 2020 is Sunday,

January 26, 2019 at 7:00 pm in

the Chapel. We will praise and

adore God the Father, our

“Papa God.” Come and be

It was great to be able to

recognize so many volunteers

last Saturday. Here is a list of a

few of the ministries that were

represented at the Volunteer

Appreciation Party: the choir,

cleaning crew, furniture bank,

ushers, PSR faculty, Festival

workers, Fish Fry workers,

Project Hope, bakers, Wellness

Ministry members, Three Pillar

members and many more

ministries. Know that we

appreciate our many volunteers

every day. We could not do all

that we do as this very vibrant

Parish without the dedicated

disciples that give of their time

and talents.

Is your ministry, neighborhood or

family looking for a fun and

fulfilling service project to do

together? St John Vianney has

provided the Sunday evening

meal on the second Sunday of

each month for Project Hope

since the shelter opened. This

involves planning the meal,

purchasing the food, cooking and

delivering for 40 people. This is

truly living out God’s command to

"feed the hungry" here in our own

community. If you would like to

volunteer for one Sunday

evening’s meal or if you have

questions, please call Margaret
