Fourth Year--Fall 2010

Location: Chicago, Illinois

Duration: 4 months

Project: A children’s hospital to serve as an addition to the Northwestern Medical Department

Le Piagge: Social Housing in Florence

Third Year--Spring 2010; Study Abroad

Location: Florence, Italy

Duration: Research 11 weeks Design 5 weeks

Research

This semester concentrated on researching post WWII social housing projects in Europe. Using various case studies, constraints were derived regarding efficient sizes for apartment units as well as master planning ideas.

Design

While working in groups of American and Italian students, the project included a master plan of one district in Le Piagge per group and an individual building per student. The following illustrates the group master plan for the western district called the Laghetti and a design for an apartment building intended for co-housing.

Auburn University Lyceum

Third Year--Fall 2009

Location: Auburn, AL

Duration: 10 weeks

In-tended to be a bookend to the new green-space master plan, the Lyceum contains spaces for fourteen colleges, a lecture hall and large gathering area or ballroom.

Intentions: Provide a clear edge to the new green space in the campus master plan

Rural Studio: Expandable House

Second Year--Fall 2008

Location: Footwash, AL

Duration: 4 months; Completed August 2009

Project:As a design-build program, 16 students designed and constructed this house for a woman, Rose Lee, and her 2 sons. Basing the design of the house on expandability methods, the footprint is focused around an exterior courtyard. The first semester of students designed and built the front part of the house while the second semester completed the addition and courtyard. Approxi-mately 60% of the materials are recycled.

Intentions: Incorporate ideas of expandability into the initial design of the home so that additions may be constructed appropriately

Use passive heating and cooling techniques (cross-ventilation, wood burning fireplace, etc.) as the primary systems for climate control

Design a front porch that promotes the social level of the family with their neighborhood

Individual ContributionThe design and assembly of four trusses in the living room; constructed from recycled heart-pine.
