day, June 17, in Room 101.All interested persons are invited to attend

FIAG has served the senior adult com-munity in Georgetown for 18 years. Itsmission is to help seniors maintain theirindependence and quality of life by pro-viding transportation and other services.

The services help individuals age inplace in the comfort of their home. It iswell known that FIAG provides transpor-tation to medical appointments and togrocery shop. But there are many otherways FIAG helps, such as care-calling orvisits to home-bound seniors. Many se-niors live alone and appreciate a friendlycall or visit from someone who cares.

Michelle will give an update on FIAGincluding how to volunteer this summer.

Faith in Action speakerset for Monday, June 17

Are you alone or lonely? Loneliness is nota condition that is limited to any specificage. In our society of connectivity tech-nology and social media, we as a peopleare lonelier than ever. Being alone is notthe same as being lonely. Some people pre-fer a life that is more “hermit-like”: It’sabout the individual’s perception.

According to a study by Holt-Lanstad,22% of American adults say they “oftenfeel lonely, left out, or isolated.” Loneli-ness is as bad for your physical health assmoking a half-pack of cigarettes a day,and worse than obesity.

Our relationship with God is inextri-cably connected to our relationship withourselves and others. Here are some sug-gestions for a meaningful relationship thatare effective in relieving loneliness: Trystarting every day with open and honestconversation with God. Then make aneffort every day to have a deep conversa-tion with someone about topics (otherthan the weather). Ask about another’s“story” or “best moment of the past week”or “number one concern on their heart.”

Your church family has opportunitiesto connect through worship and smallgroups. If you would like a Christianfriend to come alongside you to visit, giveme a call. We will talk about connectingyou with various options such as a CareTeam visitor or a Stephen Minister.

God created each of us to love Him andothers. When you are loving God and feel

loved by Him, the opportunities to loveHis people and be loved by them will openup. Most of all, know that you are lovedand give me a call if you’d like to talk aboutthis.

The first of 22 two-and-a-half-hour Stephen Ministry training classes (a total of 50 hours)begins September 9 at First United Methodist Church. The classes continue through nextFebruary and will consist of trainees from many of the Stephen Ministry congregations inGeorgetown, facilitated by Stephen Ministry Leaders from those congregations.

Stephen Ministers are church members who are recruited, selected, trained and commis-sioned to provide one-to-one lay caring ministry to persons in crisis or with other needs forcare. The training includes classes on active listening, maintaining confidentiality, learningabout distinctively Christian caring resources, knowing when to recommend professionalcare, recognizing loss and grief, and committing to meeting weekly with their care receivers.

If you are the least bit interested in this journey, please contact one of our StephenLeaders: Penny Leone, Sandie Kienitz, Melissa Pilcher or Judy Thomson. We’ll schedule atime to visit and get an application to you. Applications must be submitted by August 15.

Give this some serious thought. It may be just the mission you want to pursue.

Coming soon, to a church near you: Stephen Ministry training

One of my most treasured possessions is a drawing that hangs onthe wall in my study at home. I have reproduced it to accompanythis article, so that you might see it for yourself. It portrays Jesuslaughing. As you will notice, this isn’t just a picture of Jesus with asmile on his face, but actually laughing, deeply and with obviousenjoyment.

I am often struck by the comments people make when they seethis drawing for the first time. They marvel over the fact that theyhave never seen one quite like it. Never in their lives have they seena picture of Jesus laughing quite like this!

Isn’t that a shame? We need to reclaim the side of Jesus’ personality that reveals hisenjoyment of life and living. Certainly, he was “a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief”(Isaiah 53:3), but if our Lord was truly human, as we believe, then he also laughed,

enjoyed a good joke, loved a good time. The drawing in my study was originally an illustration

for a magazine article by theologian Harvey Cox, whose writ-ings include The Secular City and The Seduction of the Spirit. Thearticle from which the drawing is taken was on religion andhumor. Somewhere along the way, for some of us at least, these two important parts of life became separated from oneanother, and we are the poorer for it.

Laughter is an important, even essential, part of life, andit needs to be part of our religious lives, as well. I hope youenjoy a bit of laughter with Jesus today, as you see the pic-ture of Jesus laughing. It may bring some joy to your dis-cipleship, as well.

—Yours in the name of a Christ who laughs, Bill

In 2018, The Caring Place delivered more than $3 million in goods and services to fami-lies in need who live in Georgetown and northern Williamson County. This assistancetook the form of free items from the Food Pantry as well as help with utility bills, rent, medicine and other necessities. This assistance often makes the difference between a fam-ily getting evicted—perhaps because of a job loss—and staying in their home or apart-ment. Families in financial crisis receive 10 days of food once a month at TCP. For afamily of five, that’s a savings of $300 a month in groceries, money that can be used forother important household expenses. In 2018, there were more than 27,000 visits to theFood Pantry. Because you give, The Caring Place helps meet the basic human needs ofpeople in our community.

One of my favorite guiltypleasures of being the YouthDirector is selecting theBibles for our graduatingseniors. That may sound alittle lame, but I lovespending time (usually acouple of hours) lookingthrough the translations, references and notes, andstyles of Bibles. Now Iknow that the Bible is God'sLiving Word, but having atangible and meaningfulbook of scripture in yourhands just feels good.

But this year I wanted toshare that experience withour seniors. So we had ourfirst "Senior Bible FieldTrip." And it was a memo-rable experience that theyreally got into.

—Yours in the name of a Christ who laughs, Bill

day, June 17, in Room 101.All interested persons are invited to attend
