    Paper-III 22 J-06-12

Read the following passage carefully andchoose the correct answer of the questionsthat follow (Q. No. 71 to 75) :

Causation is a concept of suchfundamental importance to historicalunderstanding that E.H. Carr in his G.M.Trevelyan lectures (1961) declared thestudy of history to be the study of causes. But postmodernist thinking on the issue ofhistorical causation is different. JohnVincent would abandon the search forcauses as futile and rather look forexplanations. Writing in 1976, TheodoreZeldin thought of causation andchronology as the two tyrants to historians.

Hayden White attacked the concept ofcausation as depriving people of both theirfreedom of action in the present and ofcontrol over the future by trapping them inan inescapable network of causation.Postmodernist theory installs interpretationin the place of empirical research into thecauses of specific events.

Since the notion of cause depends onsequential time, some postmodernistsattack the latter too. The cause of an

occurrence must obviously come before itin time. But the postmodernist historianand philosopher, Ankersmit, says“Historical time is a recent and highlyartificial invention of Westerncivilization,” and the writing of historicalnarrative based on the concept of time, hehas declared, is “building on quicksand.”The postmodernists would prefer that theidea of sequential time be abandoned inthe writing of history.

Richard Evans shows how the very idea of post modern is paradoxical in that it iscontrary to the assertion that there are notime periods in history. And thepostmodernist statement that historicaltime is a thing of the past, itself uses thehistorical concept of time which thestatement is intended to dismiss. Thelinear and sequential concept of time is fartoo powerful a principle to be dispensedwith, for it is not an intellectual constructbut a matter of everyday experience for

people the world over. Time itself may bewithout boundaries, but in terms of humanlife it passes, and has limits.

    71.  What is the concept of causation byE.H. Carr ?(A) History cannot be understood

    devoid of cause-effectrelationship.

    (B) History depends on time andspace.

    (C) It is a matter of every daypersonal experience to inquireabout the basis of an event.

    (D) Causes should be undertakenin totality.

    72.  What does postmodernist thinkabout the Historical causation ?(A) It is useless to search for it.(B) It puts limitation on the

    Historian.(C) Interpretation is necessary rather

than the cause-effect relation.(D) There are different opinions.

    73.  Which is not the concept of Timeamongst the postmodernists ?(A) It should not be studied in the

interpretation of History.(B) It puts forth the theory that theinterpretation of events beemphasized.

    (C) Time deals with past.(D) The factor of Time has not

    been thought of by theintellectuals.

    74.  Who amongst the following wrotethat the cause-effect relationship isan obstacle for History ?(A) Richard Evans

    (B) Ankersmit(C) E.H. Carr(D) Theodore Zeldin

    75.  Which one of the following said thatthe narrative History writingconsidering the Time is likeconstructing a building on a weakfoundation ?(A) Ankersmit(B) Theodore Zeldin(C) Richard Evans(D) E.H. Carr
