➤➤➤ HUBER MBR system The HUBER MBR system is a combination of biologicalwastewater treatment and high-efficient solids/liquidseparation. Mechanically pre-screened wastewater is treatedbiologically and separated from the activated sludge byultrafiltration plate membranes. We use membranesmade of polyether sulphone with very good filtrationproperties and a nominal pore size of 150 kDA (38 nm =0.038 μm). The pores are small enough to preventpassage of all solids and bacteria, cells, fats, oils, colloids,macromolecules as well as of most viruses. Reactor volume of MBR systems and their spacerequirement is only about 25 - 40 % in comparison withthat of conventional activated sludge systems. As aresult, the DS concentration in the aeration tank can beincreased to about 10 – 12 g/l as conventional secondaryclarifiers or additional treatment stages, such as filtrationor UV treatment, are not required. The surplus sludge removed from the filter chambers ofthe MBR system has a high concentration of approx. 1 –1.5 % DS (compared to 0.3 – 0.5 % DS achieved byconventional biological systems). This is a surplus sludgereduction of more than 50 %. Significantly reducedinvestment and operating costs for sludge thickening aretherefore another positive aspect.
