iTEC+ Leap into Learning is offering a full program of great workshops and microlearning sessions divided into two-hour program segments.

Our workshops run for two hours so that you have a chance not only to learn, but also to practice your new skills.

Microlearning sessions run for one hour - they are less structured, with smaller groups so you will get plenty of opportunity to have your questions answered. Each microlearning session is repeated in the second hour.

You will need to select your workshops when you register for iTEC+.

1.1 Excel - intermediate Ric Tester and Suzi Feltis

This workshop will demonstrate the use elements of Microsoft Excel such as sorting and filtering, merging and separating rows and columns and using functions.

1.3 School Newsletters – make them (not you) work harder

All schools produce newsletters, and a good newsletter can be a key element in your school’s promotional strategy.

This workshop will look at how your school newsletter can be used to reinforce your key promotional messages and enhance your school’s image.

We’ll look at layout and content, and also how your newsletter complements your school web site.

Suitable for anyone who authors, designs or contributes to the school’s newsletter or web site.

1.4 Virtual learning experiences for communities of schools

Explore a number of ways the technology within a school can be used to create virtual learning communities amongst groups of schools. Look at videoconferencing, Bridgit, Edmodo and Bloged. Investigate effective ways of creating suitable online learning groups.

This workshop will provide an overview of the use of iPads in education, in particular special education settings. The benefits of using the device to support student learning will be discussed as well as potential problems and issues for schools. A range of applications will be demonstrated across all Key Learning Areas.

1.7 Hands-on Science

Ruben Meerman

Join Ruben for two hours of fantastic, hands-on science activities and teaching ideas. This workshop is guaranteed to be rowdy, messy, interactive and most of all, fun! You’ll experience a tried and tested group work model teachers adore and students love. All the materials are safe for kids, require minimal preparation and are readily available from your local corner store.

Ruben is passionate about sharing great ideas that work and has been presenting science demonstrations in primary and high schools for seventeen years. He has taught primary science education at Griffith University, written four children’s science books and published hundreds of online science teaching resources.

2.1 iPods and iPads for Beginners

This is a practical and hands-on, introductory workshop for teachers to introduce them to the functions of mobile learning devices, such as iPads and iPods. This includes the basic components of iPods and iPads as well as the many possible uses of these devices in the classroom to assist learning.

2.6 Robotics in the Classroom - an introductory hands-on workshop

Teachers will learn how simple it is to use and program the LEGO® Education NXT Robot with practical hands on activities that can be easily implemented in the classroom with direct relevance to the curriculum This workshop will also introduce teachers to the LEGO Education ‘Green City Challenge’ which is ideal as a classroom beginner package to introduce robotics or an in-class competition set. The Green City challenge set based on renewable energy offers real life settings for solving different missions so students can apply the skills acquired through the training.

Need to re-stock your toolbox? Come along and enjoy a hands-on workshop to consider the latest web tools for implementation in your teaching and learning space. The workshop will focus on exploration of tools and discussion around implementation of those tools in teaching and learning programs. It is bound to be fun, filled with frivolity and a fantastic learning experience.

3.2 Digital Photography

This practical session will look at photography in a school setting - how to get those eyecatching images of children which will enhance your newsletter, web site or other promotional material.

While some technical aspects will be covered, this session will be as relevant for those with a “point-and-shoot” camera as for those with a high-end SLR. It will include a very quick look at some image enhancement using Photoshop. Bring your camera.

3.3 Planning to Lead Technology

During this workshop, participants will consider the new ideas and complex issues surrounding technology and its impact on student learning. Participants will also explore the planning of technology and professional learning that will support new ideas, issues and research relevant to teaching students in the digital age.

NERAM.

3.5 Digital Elders

The Digital Elders project has been one of largest projects to collect the voices of our Aboriginal Elders. This workshop will look at Westdale Primary School’s journey through this wonderful project and the impact it has had on the curriculum, the student and the community.

A familiarisation session on the use of BlogED, DEC’s blogging tool. Examine how to use, and explore examples of how teachers are already using BlogED as an effective teaching tool.

The workshop will also provide hands on opportunities to learn about how to effectively integrate ICT with attention to the diverse needs of students in your classroom from a range of backgrounds and abilities.

4.8 Affordable Classroom Technologies

News alert - all schools interested in refreshing their older interactive classroom technologies, please note that the Procurement Solutions Directorate will shortly extending the range of interactive whiteboards and related products with the latest technology at even lower prices that the current contract.

The Affordable Classroom Technology Program will provide, for the first time, extended payment options for bulk purchases to enable schools to provide students with access to more new technologies earlier than ever before.

Evaluation is progressing and there is a number of new and exciting classroom devices being considered by the evaluation team of school principals, IT and Procurement Solutions staff.

4.9 Science Assistants Workshop

The workshop will include a demonstration of the difference between osmosis and diffusion. There will also be a demonstration of the Formula for Molarity. Within the two hours there will be time for networking.
