WelcomeWelcome to the Instructional Technology Program at Georgia Southern University. We are happy to

introduce you to our program. This handbook is designed to give you an overview of the various degreeprograms that we offer. While we have included key elements regarding the degrees offered through the

Instructional Technology program, theGeorgia Southern University Graduate Handbook provides complete

program information.

Our M.Ed. degrees offer two K-12 certifications recognized by the Georgia PSC, the school library

media certification and the instructional technology certification. In addition, our M.Ed. Instructional Technology

degree can be tailored to meet the needs of technology specialists and instructional designers in corporate,

military, higher education and district school centers through its non-certification cohort program.

Our Ed.S. program is a research-based degree that guides students through a sequence of courses

that help students conduct applied research in their institutional settings. We also offer a three-course

sequence that leads to the Online Teaching and Learning Endorsement from the PSC.

All of our degree coursework is offered 100% online. Our faculty are fulltime members of the Georgia

Southern University community and national leaders in the field of Instructional Technology. We look forward

to working with you.

Advisement

Academic advisement is initially provided by theGraduate Academic Services Center in the College ofEducation. The center will be the first point of contact for most students. After students are admitted, they can

follow their program of study progress by logging into DegreeWorks through their MyGeorgiaSouthern link.

The center also providesinformation for prospective students including tuition costs, application deadlines,

and background checks. The information in this handbook is to be used as a guide. Please consult the

Georgia Southern University Graduate Catalog for official information.

Application for AdmissionTheOffice of Graduate Admissions is responsible for overseeing the admission of students. There is a $50 fee

to apply to a program. Students who are applying for the Instructional Technology Ed.S. or for the OnlineTeaching and Learning Endorsement should apply at theOffice of Graduate Admissions website. The

Instructional Technology M.Ed.degrees are part of the Georgia On My Line (GOML) program and students

can find theM.Ed. application by clicking here.

RegistrationThe registration process takes place through theOffice of the Registrar.Once students receive notification of

admission they are eligible to register for that semester. Students can select courses from their program of

located, students can select courses for the semester by accessingthe course search also located on the

MyGeorgiaSouthern.edu homepage.

Academic CalendarsTheUniversity Academic Calendars provide important dates for each semester. Students in the M.Ed.

program should follow the dates published for the GOML (GeorgiaONmyLINE) program. Ed.S. and Online

Graduation

All graduation information is provided through the Office of the Registrar. There are two graduationceremonies each year - one at the end of Fall semester and one in Spring. The final date to apply for

graduation is the first day of classes in the fall semester if you plan to graduate in fall, and the first day of

classes in the spring semester if you plan to graduate in spring OR in summer. It is best to apply for graduation

the semester before you finish your program of study. Additional information for graduation can be found at

M.Ed Degrees and CertificationThe coursework for M.Ed. is matched with the candidates career goals making our degrees suitable for P-12

certification, business, military, or higher education positions in the field of instructional technology. Ourprogram has several options for candidates who are seeking certification in Instructional Technology for the

Georgia P-12 Schools and for candidates who are seeking Instructional Technology preparation for other

settings. All options are presented below.

The following degrees provide P-12 certific ationin the state of Georgia:

Instructional Technology Certification qualifies as an approved state program for theGeorgia

Professional Standards requirements for certification as a P-12 instructional technologist.*

School Library Media Certification qualifies as an approved state program for theGeorgia

Professional Standards requirements for certification as a P-12 school library media specialist.*

Dual Certification additional coursework and an extended practicum lead to certification coursework

for both P-12 School Library Media and Instructional Technologist.*

Add-on Certification candidates who already have a M.Ed. in another P-12 field, can add on the

school library media or instructional technology certification.

In addition to completing the program of study for each field, candidates must also complete and pass

the appropriateGACE for the selected certification area. Additional information about certification can

The following degree program is available for individuals who are focused on non P-12 learning contexts:

M.Ed. Cohort in Instruc tional Technology & Design

The Instructional Technology program in the Georgia Southern University College of Education offers classes

for a special cohort of M.Ed. students focused on learning contexts outside of p-12 schools. Students in thiscohort do not earn teacher certification or certification for Instructional Technology (p-12 schools). Coursework

and projects in this cohort focus on adult learners in contexts such as higher education professional

development, higher education instructional technology, corporate training, military training, and medical

education. Students are admitted for this cohort once a year, and begin in the fall semester. Applicants must

meet all admission requirements and fall application deadlines for the M.Ed. in Instructional Technology

program. Cohort availability is dependent upon program resources. For further information about this cohort,

Admission Criteria for the M.Ed. in Instructional Technology

Regular Admission for M. Ed. Programs that Lead to P-12 Certification Complete requirements for a Bachelors degree from a regionally accredited institution.

Possess a Professional Level Four Certificate or equivalent in a teaching field. Persons not holding LevelFour Certification may be admitted; however, if pursuing initial certification in school library media, theprogram will exceed 36 hours.

Possess a Professional Level Four Certificate or equivalent in a teaching field. Persons not holding LevelFour Certification may be admitted to either concentration, however, certification in InstructionalTechnology (S5) is only available for persons who possess a Professional Level Four Certificate.

Possess a Professional Level Four Certificate or equivalent in a teaching field and a masters degree in anyfield in education are required for admission to the non-degree certification only program inInstructional Technology.

The Dual Certification Concentration, which leads to certification in Instructional Technology and SchoolLibrary Media, is only available for persons who hold a Professional Level Four Certificate orequivalent in a teaching field.

Present a cumulative 2.50 (4.0 scale) grade point average or higher on all undergraduate and graduatework combined.

For students who do not possess a Level Four Certificate, present official report of scores on the MillerAnalogies Test (MAT) or the verbal, quantitative and analytical writing sections of the GraduateRecords Examination (GRE). Students who hold a clear, renewable T4 certificate are not required tosubmit GRE or MAT scores.

Submit a completed Disclosure and Affirmation Form that addresses misconduct disclosure, criminalbackground check, the Code of Ethics for Educators, and tort liability insurance.

Persons seeking initial certification not holding Level Four Certification must submit passing scores on theGACE Program Admission Assessment or be exempt by acceptable SAT, ACT, or GRE scores.

Regular Admission for the Instructional Technology & Design Cohort (Non-Cert)

Complete requirements for a Bachelors degree from a regionally accredited institution.

Provisional students must earn grades of B or higher in their first nine (9) hours of coursework after admission and meet any other stipulations outlined by the department to be converted to regularstatus.

Practicum in Instructional Technology

The practicum in Instructional Technology is a 100-hour field placement. Each candidate will locate

three technology centers to complete the required activities. The majority of hours will be spent at one center

while the other two centers will serve as locations for some of the practicum assignments. A full description of

the practicum can be found at theFRIT 7739 Instructional Technology Practicum Handbook. Depending on

the placement and your work situation, candidates might need to take some personal days to complete their

practicum.

Candidates need to have completed the majority of their coursework and all of the required courses inthe program of study. The practicum is intended to be completed in the last full semester of the program of

study. Candidates should take the practicum with, at most, one other course for a total of 6 hours. The

practicum (FRIT 7739) is only offered during the Fall and Spring semesters. Candidates should begin to locate

practicum sites before the semester they plan on taking FRIT 7739. Those candidates who are not currently

teaching in a K-12 school and need to have a placement for their practicum will need to complete forms before

they can obtain a field placement in a school. Information about site placement and links to the required forms

Special Education Course Requirement

Candidates who are seeking initial certification in the Instructional Technology program will need to complete a

course in Special Education. There are several options possible through GOML (Valdosta State University-

SEAC 5140 or Introduction to Exceptional Children at http://plucredits.com).

Practicum in School Library Media

FRIT 7734 and FRIT 7765 are the culminating experiences in the School Library Media program. Each

candidate will identify three school library media centers, one at the elementary, the middle and the high

school level. The majority of hours will be spent at one center. However, candidates need to plan ahead

(professional days, Fall or Spring breaks, etc.) to complete hours and some assignments at the other two

Practicum Guide.Depending on the placement and your work situation, candidates might need to take some

personal days to complete their practicum.

The practicum is intended to be completed in the last full semester of the program of study.

Candidates need to have completed the majority of their coursework and all of the required courses in the

program of study. Candidates should take the practicum with, at most, one other course for a total of 6 hours.

The practicum (FRIT 7734 or 7765) is only offered during the Fall and Spring semesters. Candidates should

begin to locate practicum sites before the semester they plan on taking FRIT 7734 or 7765. Those candidates

who are not currently teaching in a K-12 school and need to have a placement for their practicum will need to

complete forms before they can obtain a field placement in a school. Information about site placement and

COHORT - INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY & DESIGN, 36 HoursThe Instructional Technology program offers classes for a special cohort of M.Ed. students focused on

learning contexts outside of p-12 schools. Students in this cohort do not earn teacher certification or

certification for P-12 Instructional Technology. Coursework and projects in this cohort focus on adult learners

in contexts such as higher education professional development, higher education instructional technology,corporate training, military training, and medical education. Students are admitted for this cohort once a year,

and begin in the fall semester. Applicants must meet all admission requirements and deadlines for the M.Ed. in

Instructional Technology program. Cohort availability is dependent upon program resources.

Practicum in School Library Media

FRIT 7734 and FRIT 7765 are the culminating experiences in the School Library Media program. Each

candidate will identify three school library media centers, one at the elementary, the middle and the high

school level. The majority of hours will be spent at one center. However, candidates need to plan ahead

(professional days, Fall or Spring breaks, etc.) to complete hours and some assignments at the other two

Practicum Guide.Depending on the placement and your work situation, candidates might need to take some

personal days to complete their practicum.The practicum is intended to be completed in the last full semester of the program of study.



The practicum (FRIT 7734 or 7765) is only offered during the Fall and Spring semesters. Candidates should

begin to locate practicum sites before the semester they plan on taking FRIT 7734 or 7765. Those candidates

who are not currently teaching in a K-12 school and need to have a placement for their practicum will need to

complete forms before they can obtain a field placement in a school. Information about site placement and

links to the required forms can be found atSchool Library Media Practicum Forms.

EportfoliosDuring the practicum (FRIT 7734, 7765, or 7739) semester, candidates will present their final

eportfolios online to the Instructional Technology faculty during a capstone experience. The eportfolios will

contain artifacts from the candidates entire program of study. It is important that candidates keep all of the

projects they have completed throughout the program of study to be presented in their eportfolios. So, while

working through the coursework, a web repository should be constructed as a location to house all course

assignments and projects for future use in the eportfolio.

FRIT 7330 The Internet in Schools 3 Credit HoursThis course provides learners with a focused look at issues surrounding the implementation and use ofemerging applications of the internet in schools.

FRIT 7331 Leadership of the School Library Media Program 3 Credit Hours

An introduction to the functions of the school library media center and the various roles of the school librarymedia specialist. Topics include: program planning and development, budgeting, facility management, andpublic relations. Techniques include theselection, adaptation, learning, and presentation of stories for all ages. Students will encounter a wide varietyof stories from many different cultures, learn to identify resources for finding stories, develop skills in tellingstories with ease and enthusiasm, and learn to evaluate the qualities that make stories age-appropriate forvarious grade levels.

Ed.S. DegreeThe Education Specialist (Ed.S) degree is a research-based program emphasizing problem solving and

research skills. The Ed.S. degree offers two main concentrations: Instructional Technology and School LibraryMedia. The Ed.S. does not provide initial certification in these fields. Candidates can obtain P-12 Instructional

Technology certification at the Ed.S. level if they already have P-12 certification in a field.

Cohort Model

The Instructional Technology Ed.S. program functions as a cohort. Beginning Fall 2016 candidates will be

admitted once yearly for Fall semester. Each cohort of candidates will progress through their Ed.S. coursework

as a group. This will provide a support system and a method for candidates to interact with each other

throughout their program of study.

Ed.S. Admission RequirementsRegular Admiss ion

Complete requirements for a Masters degree in Instructional Technology or closely related field such asLibrary & Information Science; or possess a Masters degree in another field that includes a minimumof 18 graduate semester credit hours of instructional technology coursework. The Masters degreemust be from a regionally accredited institution.

Present a 3.25 or higher GPA on all graduate work attempted. Students seeking certification in Instructional Technology through the Ed.S. program must possess a clear,

renewable teaching certificate. Initial certification in school library/media is not available through theEd.S. program.

Present current official report of scores on the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) or the verbal, quantitative andanalytical writing sections of the Graduate Records Examination (GRE). If the applicant holds aMasters degree from Georgia Southern University with at least a 3.50 graduate GPA, the GRE orMAT is not required.

Submit a personal statement of purpose, not to exceed 200 words, that identifies the applicants reasons forpursuing graduate study and how admission into the program relates to the applicants professionalaspirations.


ProvisionalApplicants may be approved for provisional admission based on the quality of the admission materialpresented. Provisional students must earn grades of B or higher in their first nine (9) hours of course work

after admission and meet any other stipulations outlined by the department to be converted to regular status.
