Missionary Co-op CollectionNext weekend, August 16-17, Fr. Rico Villareal will speak at all masses as part of our participation in the Annual Mission Cooperative Program for the Diocese of Paterson.Fr. Rico, from the Diocese of San Pablo, Philippines [comprising the whole province of Laguna, Philippines], will speak about his diocese’s missionary work in the province of Laguna.

At present, the Diocese has 124 diocesan priests and 80 religious priests ministering to its 82 parishes. It maintains two seminaries, housing 111 seminarians and is graced with 1,787 devoted volunteer catechists.

All these programs supported by the Diocese are primarily funded from contributions from the its parishes and special collections. These resources are no longer sufficient to support its growing programs therefore, the Missionary Cooperation Program is conducting this Mission Appeal asking for your support to aid the following programs:

Aid to Seminaries [support for formation of future priests], Evangelization Program of the Diocese [support for volunteer catechists] and Ongoing Formation of Priests.

Please continue to support the important work of the missions—both in your prayers and financially. There is an envelope in your packet for this purpose. God bless you for your generosity.

In today’s reading Elijah heard God’s voice in a tiny whispering. God often speaks to us softly and through the kindness and caring voice of another. When we are overwhelmed by a major life struggle and/or the accumulation of many difficulties,

we crave the relief of the emotional pain. Talking can release the tension. We can talk to a Stephen Minister in a one on one, confidential, Christian relationship and God’s whispers, in return, will give us peace.

This Friday, August 15, we celebrate the feast of the Assumption of Mary, a holy day of obligation. It is a feast

of the highest significance; it celebrates Mary’s Easter.

Through this feast, the church celebrates the Blessed Virgin Mary’s welcome into heaven. It is a feast for all of us because Mary, the Mother of the Church, has accomplished what each of us hopes and expects to happen. As we believe that Jesus was the first to rise from the dead, so we believe he has also received his mother first into eternity.

Eastern tradition called this event the “Dormition” or the “sleeping” of Mary indicating that she did not die but was taken to heaven as if asleep.

Pope Pius XII declared the bodily assumption of Mary a dogma of the church in 1950.

Two curious traditions: (1) If you cut back lilies from Easter and planted them, they should bloom on August 15 and (2) A swim in the ocean on today’s feast was said to insure good health.

Calling all Mass Captains!

Once or twice a year I sit down to write a note to the congregation hoping to inspire you to join Music Ministry this coming year. This year I hope to tell you a little

more about our ministry, about Craig and me, and hopefully to inspire you to sing!

Many of you know that Craig began working here in 1996 as the adult choir director. That was the beginning of our St. Mary’s journey! Through the years we became engaged, got married, and have had three children baptized into this community. We

truly consider St. Mary’s to be our home! Currently we work together to oversee and run the Music Ministry at St. Mary’s; we have always felt blessed to be lucky enough to be part of such a wonderful and supportive church family.

We believe there is a place for EVERYONE within our ministry. It doesn’t matter if you have music training, or if you are not sure how to follow along. All are welcome and we are happy to have you. (Questions? [email protected] or call 973.650.8962.)

“Elijah came to a cave where he took shelter. Then the Lord said, ‘Go outside and stand on the mountain before the Lord: the Lord will be passing by.’ A strong wind…but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was a fire – but the Lord was not in the fire. After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound…”The experience of Elijah prompts me to ask: ‘Where do I find the Lord?’ We may discover Him in the beauty of nature. We may call out to Him in times of distress, as the earthquake or fire. We know we find Him in the sacraments where He feeds, forgives, nourishes and restores life. We know we find Him in the scriptures as He speaks, forms and directs our lives. We know we find Him in the praying community we call our church.

The gospel passage gives us a model of Jesus, withdrawing from the crowds and busyness, to be alone in prayer. It is that special moment too, that we find Him. All it takes is a decision, to set aside a few minutes each day, to enter into dialogue with God. We need quiet to hear ‘the tiny whispering sound’ telling us we are doing well in our efforts to live holier lives, to be a sign of Christ’s presence to others in their need, to direct our steps in the footprints of Jesus. “It is I, do not be afraid.”

It is with much gratitude to the Lord that we welcome the following new members into the community of St. Mary’s:

Welcome

Elaine and Jesus Rodriguez and family, Clifton

Diane and Eugene Patten, Elmwood Park

Ada Gonzalez Delgato, Pompton Lakes

Sylvia and Jaime Guzmán and family, Wayne
