connecting to the internet
You must install antivirus software if you connect your own Windows computer to the campus network! See p19
2
Wi-fi (eduroam) The wi-fi network, known as eduroam, is available in most of the campus, including the residences.
3
To get access to the wi-fi or wired networks with your laptop, phone or tablet, follow the how to connect booklet or see our website sussex.ac.uk/its/connect
Any problems? IT Services can help. See our website or visit the IT Service Desk in Shawcross or the Help Point in the Library.
You can use the University wi-fi network and if you live in one of the residences, you can also use the wired connection in your room. You’ll need your IT username and password to get online. See p5
Wired If you live in one of the residences, use the wired access for quicker internet speeds.
Connect your computer to the wall socket with the pink cable provided in your room.
There are about 900 PCs and Macs around the campus for students to use with many areas available 24/7. See the map on pages 12-13

Show consideration for your fellow students by avoiding personal browsing at busy times and logging off if you’re going to be leaving a computer for more than a few minutes.
Log on If the PC screen is blank, press a button on the keyboard to wake it up. Enter your IT username (e.g. ano23) and password to log on.
Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE to log onPress CTRL + ALT + DELETE to log on
If you see an error message saying no logon servers are available, count to ten and try again - just give the PC a bit more time to wake up!
5
Using IT Services computers You can browse the internet, check your email and use the customised set of programs to support your work at Sussex.
Your IT username and password These are the details you received as part of the online registration process. Your username is normally made up of your initials followed by a number, such as ano23.
You will need your IT username and password to login to campus computers and other services at Sussex such as your University email.
Manage your password Use Sussex Direct to change your password or reset it if you’ve forgotten what it is. See p14
Log off Remember to log off when you’ve finished using a computer. You don’t need to turn off the power - it will automatically hibernate to save energy if not in use.
When you start as a student, you are allocated a quota of personal file space where you can save your documents. This is sometimes referred to as your home directory and you can get access to it from any of the computers on the campus.
For example, if you save files in your Documents folder, you will be able to get back to them when you login to any other computer on the campus, just by choosing Documents from the start menu.
saving your work
6
You get 10GB of space for files in your home directory.
10GB
Working from email When opening an attachment from an email, choose Save As and give your file a permanent home (such as your Documents folder) before you start making changes to it.
Always have a back up It’s a good idea to keep the files you’re currently working on in more than one place.
For example, in addition to saving a file in your Documents folder, keep a copy on a USB stick or on a web-based file service such as Skydrive or Google.
7
If you don’t, your file is stored in a temporary location and will be lost when you close it along with all of the changes you’ve made.
!
You can print from all IT Services computers. There’s a charge for printing but all new students receive a small amount of credit to get started.
printing
Make sure you have enough credit To see how much credit you have left, log in to an IT Services PC in one of the computer rooms and then click on the printing account icon in the bottom right corner of the desktop.
!
Print straight from your laptop so you don’t have to wait for a free PC just to print a document sussex.ac.uk/its/webprint
8
You can top up using a credit or debit card in Sussex Direct or with cash in the Printing Account Banking Stations in the Library and Shawcross.
Before you use web print for the first time, make sure you’ve printed at least one page using the computers on the campus as this is how your printing account is set up.
