The strategic partnership with Dunbia establishes a majority owned joint venture ['JV'] in the United Kingdom comprising the UK operations of both organisations and the deal is subject to approval by the relevant competition authorities. The combined UK business will deliver enhanced scale and market presence to better serve existing farmer suppliers and customers of both organisations across the retail, manufacturing, wholesale and food service sectors. The businesses are highly complementary, and will offer customers regionally sourced solutions for both beef and lamb from 15 facilities across Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland. We are both family businesses with a deep connection to farming and a culture and business ethos that is centred on quality and sustainability. Given the uncertainty posed by Brexit, this partnership should further underpin the competitiveness of both operations to the benefit of all stakeholders in the UK and across Europe. We are very excited about the future of both companies and the opportunities that this transaction will bring for our staff, customers and suppliers. In our key operating markets we will be involved in 3 leading national businesses with Dawn Meats in Ireland, Dunbia in the UK and Elivia in France, with our cooperative partners Terrena. The use of antibiotics within thelivestock sector is a topic which has beengrowing in momentum over the last fewyears. The pig and poultry sectors are atthe forefront of this issue, not least asthey traditionally have the highest usesof antibiotics per kg of meat producedwithin their sectors, but also becausethey are leading a change in behaviourin farming practices. Whilst the current focusis not on the extensive beef and lambsectors that we are directly involved in, itdoesn’t mean we can ignore the issue.

The agricultural and food industry allianceRUMA, which promotes responsible use ofmedicines in farm animals, is working hard onthe subject within the Industry and hasestablished farmantibiotics.org as a means ofdisseminating accurate information, communicating research findings andproviding facts and figures on antibioticresistance; it also aims to highlight practicalstrategies and useful innovations and newthinking that could be replicated on farm. TheWorld Health Organisation (WHO) compiled alist of Critically Important (CI) antimicrobialsused in both human and animal medicine andthe main aim of the WHO and closer to homethe European Medicine Agency (EMA) is toreduce use of fluoroquinolones, 3rd and 4thgeneration cephalosporins, and colistin, andonly use these antibiotics where no otherproduct will be effective for the conditionbeing treated. The trade names of drugscontaining these antibiotics varies between

manufacturer but many drugs used to treatpneumonia for example will fall under theseheadings.

Whilst animal health and welfare must be thehighest priority when any treatmentdiscussions are had with your vet, it is worthasking what antibiotics are being used and ifthere are alternatives available that are notclassified as CI antibiotics.

Alongside this, whilst we want to reduce theusage of antibiotics, we should also look athow to prevent them being needed in thefirst place! Housing, ventilation, biosecurity, stocking densities and vaccinationprogrammes should all be looked at if youwant to reduce the need for antibiotic use.Antibiotics don’t just have a negative effect interms of human health, but they are asignificant cost to the farm business and a sickanimal never performs as well as a healthyone! Dawn Meats will be redoing the datacapture exercise we completed in 2016 toestablish a baseline for antibiotic usage withinour supply base, alongside other activities tohelp raise awareness of the issue, and try andreduce the use on our supplying farms.
