At this time of year when we are bombarded with ads for a wide variety of toys, Tidbits looks at those toys that have been inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame, as well as some of our other favorites. Americas National Toy Hall of Fame, located

in Rochester, New York, was established in 1998. It honors those toys and games that have maintained their popularity over many years. In order to qualify for admission, the toy must be widely recognized, respected, and remembered, and foster learning and creativity. In addition, it must be more than a passing fad and show innovation.

Toys in the Hall are not necessarily brand-name items. For example, the kite, bike, jump rope, rocking horse, and jigsaw puzzles are included. CLASSIC TOYS (continued): but he eventually convinced the Ohio Art

Company to take a chance on it. They renamed it the Etch-A-Sketch, and by the next holiday season, it was one of the nations most-wanted toys. The red plastic frame housed a flat gray screen and two knobs connected to a stylus that etched lines in aluminum powder on the back of the screen. Turning the toy upside down and shaking it erased the image and recoated the screen.

The Kenner Easy-Bake Oven hit retailers shelves in 1963, the brainstorm of inventor Ronald Howes, who was inspired by New York City street vendors roasting chestnuts and cooking pretzels. Two 100-watt light bulbs heated the food in a trendy turquoise oven, after little girls had mixed up the packets of cake mix with water. The first year, 500,000 ovens were sold for $15.95 each. Thirty-five years later, more than 16 million Easy-Bakes had been sold, and today that number tops 23 million. The design has been upgraded 11 times over the years. The oven no longer uses light bulbs to cook, with current models containing a heating element.

Portland, Oregon organ maker named William Gruber was responsible for the invention of the View-Master. He introduced his creation at the 1939 New York Worlds Fair, where it was sold in photo shops and stationary stores as a souvenir. During World War II, millions of View-Master reels were produced for the U.S. government to assist the armed forces with airplane and ship identification.

The name Wham-O has become synonymous with good old-fashioned fun over the years. Although its believed that the hula hoop has

been around since about 500 B.C., it wasnt until 1958 that it took on a brand name when Wham-O introduced a plastic hoop. The company promoted the hoop with giveaways at local playgrounds. Four months after its debut, 25 million hula hoops had been sold. That same year, Wham-Os Frisbee appeared in stores, and quickly became an American icon. In 1961, Wham-O had another hit with its introduction of the Slip n Slide. Voted in the Top 100 toys of all time, this long sheet of plastic was a practical choice for those who didnt have money or space for a pool. Yet another success story followed in 1965 with the Superball, invented by chemist Norman Stingley, who received the patent for a highly resilient polybutadiene ball. Wham-O produced more than 20 million Superballs during the 1960s.

You might not recognize the name Thousand Wonder Builder, the name given to a set of wooden sticks and spools. In 1914, Charles Pajeau and Robert Petit observed kids playing with pencils, sticks, and empty thread spools, and created an inspirational toy for children that sold for 60 cents. Renamed Tinker Toys, by 1918 the inventors had sold more than 2.5 million sets. That 2.5 million figure continued every year up until the 1960s. Originally the pieces were all unpainted natural wood, but in 1932, red was

added, followed by green, blue, and yellow three years later.

Two of our favorite toys had the same inventor. Reyn Guyer came up with a game that required the players to use their bodies as playing pieces. He called the simple polka-dot vinyl sheet and accompanying spinner Pretzel, but when Milton Bradley bought the rights, the name was changed to Twister. The Game that Ties You Up in Knots sold more than three million units during the first year, and has been played by an estimated 65 million people to date. In 1968, another Guyer invention brought a reprieve to those kids who were in trouble for playing ball in the house. The four-inch NERF ball, which stood for Non-Expanding Recreational Foam, had sales of four million its first year.

As architect Frank Lloyd Wright was building Tokyos Imperial Hotel in 1916, his son John was building an idea of his own. As John observed workers using a construction technique of interlocking beams, he visualized a set of toy logs made of redwood. He named them after Abraham Lincoln with a slogan of interesting playthings typifying the spirit of America. More than 100 million sets of Lincoln Logs have been sold worldwide.

Play-Dohs original use was that of wallpaper cleaner. At the request of his pre-school teaching sister-in-law, chemist Joseph McVicker tweaked the formula a bit to produce a soft modeling compound for her students. Joe premiered his clay at a 1955 national education convention, and by the next year, he had a hit. Not only have kids played with about 700 million pounds of Play-Doh, it even has its own national day of recognition, September 16th.

    Cleaning Up After the Holidays

Happy New Year! While the holidays might not quite be over, planning for post-holiday cleanup can help combat the winter blues and keep you from being that one house on the block that has a holiday wreath hanging on the door until July. Here are a few tips that might help holiday cleanup go a little easier:--If you have a real tree, check with your local government to find out if and when there is tree pickup and disposal in your area. Otherwise, look for a tree disposal service nearby. Remove and pack away all the tree ornaments and decorations. The night before scheduled disposal or pickup, prep the tree. If the disposal service wants it in a tree bag, put the bag over the tree and cover the tree fully while its still in its stand. With a helper holding the tree in place, loosen the trunk from the stand and carefully lift away. Drain excess water from the stand into a sink, dry and store for next year. --When removing the tree from the stand, dont set the trunk down on the carpet or floor, as sap will create a sticky mess. Dont use the tree as firewood: Its not seasoned and the branches may have been pre-treated at the tree lot with chemicals to prevent insects.--Use a shop vac to vacuum up pine needles, tinsel and other small debris from where the tree once sat.--Put used wrapping paper into the recycling bin -- dont burn it in the fireplace.--Tree sap on tile or wood floors, or on protective cloths, can be cleaned with warm water and soap. Sap on the carpet should be dabbed with a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol until the sap comes up.--Take down outdoor Christmas lights and decorations in clear weather. Work with a partner and use a sturdy ladder for lights on the roof eaves. Some DIYers replace burnt bulbs when they take down the lights, but I usually dont, as I often have to replace burned or broken bulbs next holiday season anyway. Wrap the strands around a piece of cardboard to keep them from tangling, and store in a dry, cool place until next year.

HOME TIP: To clean up tinsel stuck in the carpet, I put my grandkids to work by having them put on thick socks, stick folded-over duct tape all along the bottoms, and scoot around the floor! It works great! -- Mary B., Watertown, Mass.

    Pet Resolutions

DEAR PAWS CORNER: Im very excited, because we adopted a puppy this week! Do you have any advice for a new pet owner? -- James C., Dallas

DEAR JAMES: Congratulations! I recently mentioned to the new owner of a cat that its important to schedule an appointment with the veterinarian as soon as possible to make sure it is healthy, and to get its vaccinations. Once thats done, pick up a few books on training and caring for your new dog. But with the new year, I want you to make some new resolutions that will last beyond just this year and the next:--I will recognize that my pet is a forever pet.--I will not abandon my pet when the novelty of being a pet owner wears off. --I will not discard my pet when house training gets tough, or when it starts chewing up my shoes.--I will take my pet for a regular annual checkup and keep its vaccinations and licensing up to date.--I pledge to spend time with my pet every day.--I will teach my family to respect animals, to have compassion for them and to care for them as they would another family member.--I will train my dog to respond to basic commands, and I will socialize it with other dogs so that it is better behaved in public or at dog parks. These are just a few of the resolutions you should make regarding your new pet. Youll probably come up with even more on your own. Whatever the case, appreciate that your pet is a part of the family for the rest of its life.

Send your questions or comments to [email protected], or write to Paws Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. For more pet care-related advice and information, visit www.pawscorner.com.

FINANCIAL FOCUSFive Reasons Not to Be a Do-It-

    Yourself Investor

Keep a level head in an up-and-down market

These days, you can go online and invest, for modest fees. You can also visit various websites for research and watch numerous cable shows for investment recommendations. So, why shouldnt you be a do-it-yourself investor rather than work with a financial professional?

Actually, there are at least five good reasons why a financial advisor can help make you a better investor.

A financial advisor can: Ask the right questions If you try to

invest on your own, you may find yourself asking the wrong questions, such as: Whats the hottest investment out there? A financial professional can help frame better questions, such as: Given my individual risk tolerance and long-term goals, which investments should I consider to help me build a balanced portfolio? In other words, a financial professional can help you ask the questions that can lead to better results.

Look at your situation objectively No matter how hard you try, you wont be able to take all the emotion out of your investment choices. After all, your investment success will play a large role in some key areas of your life, such as your ability to enjoy a comfortable retirement. Consequently, if you think youre not making the progress you should with your investments, you may be tempted to make a hasty decision to give your portfolio a jolt. Frequently, though, such choices can backfire. When it comes to investing, its better to invest with your head, not your heart. A financial advisor can analyze your situation, assess your risk tolerance and make appropriate recommendations.

Show a deeper understanding of investment research You can look up many types of financial data on your own. But do you know how to put all these pieces together into a cohesive picture? A financial professional, with years of experience and training, is generally more capable of finding the research sources and making the most sense out of the results.

Put experience to work in making portfolio recommendations. Even if youve been investing for many years, you might be surprised at all the underlying influences that should go into making investment decisions. But a financial professional understands market patterns, the nature of diversification and other factors necessary in helping you make the right choices for your situation.

Spend time looking for opportunities Even if you enjoy the process of investing, the chances are quite good that you cant spend as much time on it as a financial professional. That means, among other things, you arent constantly on the lookout for new investment opportunities. Nor are you always looking within your own portfolio for opportunities to rebalance or make other adjustments that can help you move forward toward your goals. But when you work closely with a financial advisor, he or she is exploring the financial markets for new investment prospects while regularly reviewing your portfolio for possibilities of upgrading quality, increasing diversification or making adjustments in response to changes in your life.

The do-it-yourself route may be fine for home repairs. But when it comes to managing your investment situation, there are benefits to working with a professional.

The Years Top Moments in Sports

Ill start by saying this -- without a doubt, the worst things to happen in sports this year came not on the field, but from inside the control booths of NBC and CBS.

After watching a brilliant closing ceremony at the London Olympics (except for the part where the guy who played Arthur sang I Am the Walrus), NBC cut away from the ceremony, just as The Who was set to close the entire shebang, for a sitcom starring a chimp. At least it wasnt Heidi ... but come on! CBS gets honorable mention for cutting away from the Paul McCartney-Nirvana Reunion at the 12/12/12 concerts for Sandy relief in order to show professional wrestling. (It gets the pass because at least there were other channels showing the event. By the way, that guitar McCartney was shredding? Its called a cigar box guitar.)

Luckily, plenty of great stuff did happen during the year that was, and in no particular order, here are some of the most memorable sports moments of 2012:

MARQUEZ OBLITERATES PACQUIAOIn the fourth installment of their near-epic rivalry (they fought each other more for the sake of not fighting other people, i.e. Floyd Mayweather), Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny Pacquiao put on a thrilling display. It was a throwback of a fight ... a fight in which you could see traces of the old Jack Dempsey and Max Baer vibe as these two traded hands and knockdowns for the first five rounds. Pacquiao looked like he was settling in for a long, hard-fought win as he was landing more and more punches with accuracy and seemed to be gaining hand speed.

All of that came to an abrupt end when Marquez, who clearly had a strategy to come over Pacquiaos lower left jab with an overhead right, delivered the smash of the century. Hed landed one earlier in the bout, knocking Pacquiao down, but it wasnt enough. Marquez made sure the second one counted, however. I cannot recall ever seeing a more vicious (to the point of frightening) punch than the one Marquez tagged Pacquiao with ... a muscle-rippling, neck-bulging, red-eyed and growling epic sledgehammer of a punch. I thought Pacquiao was dead, and I mean it. I thought we saw death in the ring. Pacquiao needs to hang it up. All he needs to do is look at his trainer, Freddie Roach, to see whats in store for him if he climbs back in the ring.

GIANTS WIN THE SUPER BOWLThey were never given a chance, but Eli Manning proved his mettle once again, leading the Giants through a hazardous playoff climate, beating the Packers, 49ers and Tom Brady yet again (with another long bomb to seal the deal, a little more expertly handled than David Tyrees grab a few years ago). They might not be a dynasty, but Eli Manning, Tom Coughlin and the Giants organization did it the old-fashioned way -- through perseverance and clutch playing.

And hey ... at least it wasnt the Jets.More next week ...

So Far, So Good With New Cup Car

Theres not much news this time of year, but most of its good.

NASCAR is implementing a new car next year. Officials are still tweaking and fine-tuning and sending drivers out to test it one way and then another, as at Charlotte Motor Speedway last week. The Sprint Cup teams know basically what their cars are going to look like, but not completely.Last week seemed almost like Christmas shopping. Everyones bought the presents but still has to get them wrapped.Judged on some of the color schemes that have been leaked to the public, theres a lot of new wrappers, too.The cars feel good, Matt Kenseth said. Theyve got a ton of grip. I felt like they had a lot of rear grip, especially with that cambered rear end. Im not sure if thats necessary or not, but overall, it just seems like a lot more grip than when we raced here (Charlotte) in the fall. Most everyone is accentuating the positive, which is always the norm once one season ends and another beckons. The Cup champion, Brad Keselowski, thinks its important to get whatever edge can be had early in the season.Obviously, he said, the faster you get a hold of the speed, speed is the basic necessity of a winning team, but thats not all it takes. It takes a lot more than speed to win, and you still have to have some of the other things that go with it, which are execution and good fortune, and you have to have all of those other pieces that we could list out for days, but speed is the backbone of this sport and any teams success.Keselowski was talking about speed as in having more of it than the next guy, but it appears as if speed in general will rise. Most drivers are expecting a bevy of track records to fall with the new car.***Monte Dutton covers motorsports for The Gaston (N.C.) Gazette. E-mail Monte at [email protected].

Make Your Own Jewelry With Paper Beads

Beading your own jewelry continues to be a trend rolling its way back and forth across the country. Stop at most

any art fair or peek into a glimmering bead store, and youll see exquisite beads from around the world in all shapes and sizes that inspire us to be creative. Actually, theres nothing new about beading. The popular art form has been around for centuries, passed from one generation to the next. I remember making beads from glossy magazine paper back in kindergarten class. We rolled the bright-colored paper into narrow beads, and wore them around our necks on shoelaces. If you and your kids would like to create some dazzling designs for your own jewelry, heres how to make paper beads and fashion them into necklaces and accessories. Its easy!1. Tear out illustrated pages from a magazine, or save a sheet or two from the Sunday comics in your newspaper. Gift-wrap paper also works well. The more colorful the paper, the brighter the beads.2. Cut the paper into long, narrow triangles, approximately 5 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide at the broad end. 3. To form each bead, carefully roll the triangle around a pencil or sturdy drinking straw (use a large nail or toothpick for narrow beads), beginning with the broad end of the triangle and ending with the pointed end. Glue the point to the rolled paper. Remove the pencil or straw. Continue until you have a nice collection. Young children may prefer rolling several at a time and coming back to the project later. Let glue dry.To make necklaces, string beads onto bright cording, yarn or string. Knot ends together. For variation, add buttons, aluminum washers and craft beads between the paper beads. For a brooch or hair clip, use a glue gun to glue several beads together in a row on the top of a jewelry clasp or a plain, flat hairclip.Note: To protect the beads and give them shine, paint over them with non-toxic water-soluble varnish before you string the necklaces or make accessories. Its also fun to add dots and designs with craft paint from squeeze bottles. ***Donna Ericksons award-winning series Donnas Day is airing on public television nationwide. Hogmanay is the Scottish celebration of New Years, a great festive time, seeped in many customs and traditions such as the redding, first footing, the bells and black bun. Hogmanay is the Scots word for the last day of the year. It is, however, normally only the start of a celebration that lasts through the night until the morning of New Years Day or, in some cases, Jan. 2, which is a Scottish Bank Holiday.

Here are some of traditions and the reasoning behind them:

    New Years Eve Customs

During the day of Hogmanay, the household would be busy cleaning so that the New Year could be welcomed into a tidy and neat house. It is considered bad luck to welcome in the New Year in a dirty, uncleaned house. Fireplaces would be swept out and polished, and some people would read the ashes of the very last fire of the year to see what the New Year would hold. The act of cleaning the entire house was called the redding, or getting ready for the New Year.

Pieces from a Rowan tree would be placed above a door to bring luck. In the house would be placed a piece of mistletoe, not for kissing under like at Christmas, but to prevent illness to the householders. Pieces of holly would be placed to keep out mischievous fairies, along with pieces of hazel and yew, which were thought to have magical powers and would protect the house and the people who lived in it. Juniper would be burnt throughout the house, then all the doors of the home would be opened to bring in fresh air. The house was then considered ready to bring in the New Year.

Debts would be paid by New Years Eve, because it was considered bad luck to see in a new year with a debt.

Any visitors who arrive before the chimes of midnight on New Years Eve would be violently shooed away to prevent bad luck. At

midnight, the man of the house would open the back door to let the old year out and then open the front door to let in the new year. The household also would make as much noise as possible to scare off evil spirits.

New Year BellsThe first stroke of the chimes at New Year is

known as The Bells. People would sing Auld Lang Syne together while linking arms.

After the bells have rung, people would go visiting friends and family, or first footing as

it is known in Scotland. This would involve carrying a bottle of spirit such as whisky to offer a new year dram. In olden days when people could only afford one bottle of spirits a year, this bottle would take pride of place on the mantelpiece or by the fireplace, and only be opened at the stroke

of midnight. The first-foot, the first person to cross the threshold, is supposed to set the luck for the rest of the year. Traditionally, tall dark men are preferred as the first-foot.

Black Bun is a type of fruit cake completely covered in pastry. Of Scottish origin, it was traditionally eaten on Twelfth Night but now enjoyed at Hogmanay.

Hogmanay ToastsAs people wish each other a Happy New Year

there are some hogmanay toasts that can be said. A traditional Scottish New Year toast is:

Lang may yer lum reek!It means long may your chimney smoke,

and originated when people had coal fires, and if the chimney was smoking it meant that you could afford coal and keep warm.

Another New Year toast said by Scottish people is:

A guid New Year to ane an a and mony may ye see. Which translates to English from Scots as: A good New Year to one and all, and many may you see.(c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Save egg cartons for childrens painting palettes. Its very easy to give kids a small amount of many colors, and when they are each in their own cup, they dont get spread out and run together as quickly. Plus, they are easy to carry. -- O.L. in Utah

Remove price-tag residue off hard surfaces with hairspray. Or WD40 works well too.

Make your own frozen dinners by purchasing divided trays and using them to store leftovers. Slip each into a plastic bag and label. On busy nights, you can take your favorite out and microwave it.

A beautiful but stained or worn

tablecloth can find a new life at your dinner table. Cut into napkin sizes, and give any frayable ends a hemming. -- A.S. in Oregon

Heres a great winter tip thats double purpose: After your dishwasher has done its job, open the door and let the dishes air dry rather than machine dry. Youll save on energy, while you add warmth and humidity to your homes air.

A damp cloth plus baking soda should by your first weapon against stains in the kitchen and bathroom. Its eco-friendly and a mild abrasive, which works without scratching!
