The week that was. WOW. These pages were typed and designed with weary eyes and heavy sighs. Nevertheless, we’re SLEEK once more. This week as you all can imagine, it’s all about the Independence Weekend craze. So many things were to be done. Behold the musical beast Delano and some alternative social networking websites to try your hand at. The chat about the Bolt man himself is of course present, how could we not? But just turn the pages and read on, and remember to Be SLEEK.

DELANOTHE MUSICAL BEAST

The wheels of steel have seen many a master, but this master rules with an iron fist. From the Renaissance Disco camp emerges Delano, one of the

most popular disc jockeys/promoters in the island. The remixes, the vibes, the excitement, the anticipation...he brings it all - whether behind the turntables or at the drawing board for his parties. Let’s turn up the bass in this place with the musical beast.

S: What’s your main aim whenever performing as a DJ?

D: To get people dancing and buss the place when you’re playing...for people to enjoy themselves and make it a moment to remember.

S: Do you remember the first event you kept or played at?

D: The first party kept was on New Year’s Eve 90 something...and the most memorable one was a party called Bare As You Dare kept by Ribbie. It did keep at Baron’s Plaza. A that really buss mi still because that’s when I started doing remixes and stuff and after I finished playing the crowd was calling me back on the stage. Nobody else couldn’t get fi play because the crowd a call me back to play. So that was the most memorable moment... bare as you dare in the ‘90s

S: What other countries/places have you played in?

D: Umm...Switzerland, Amsterdam, London, Japan, Germany, all over the different islands. There’s so much of them I’ve been to I can’t remember all of them still.

S: When all the partying is over how do you chill out?

D: I watch TV enuh and sleep. But I like going out after working. I like going to other parties or to the club or something to hear something different in my ears and just to wake up to what’s

happening out on the road.

S: So how is the party scene in your eyes at the moment?

D: To me it change

a lot still, in terms of how DJs play, and what kind of DJs play at events. I don’t know how to explain it but I don’t see anybody making a dent in the business like somebody create something or recreate something. Like how Stone Love make a stamp in the business by having certain dub plates and like how a Renaissance recreate remixes. That’s what put us to a different standard and I’m not seeing that happening now.

S: What advice would you give to upcoming DJs/promoters?

D: DJs need to more run it like a business and have an image that people can and want to respect, be around and follow. The

promoters want to

make sure that they take some time and

make sure that they have proper DJs at their events, not just somebody who is just a pouchie or just have a laptop with music. So far a lot of promoters doing very well and a lot of DJs doing well.

S: Old school or new school?

D: As a old school man, I’m going to seh old school enuh because...the parties back in the days, when party a buss it buss. The artiste dem usually help out a lot to and yuh can’t forget certain parties. People still a ask mi for Delano’s Revenge and I don’t keep that from 2000, is just the vibe and the music that they get. Some of the parties coming to that now and getting to that kind of a vibe.

S: For you, what are some of the hot tracks now?

D: Gal A Bubble - Konshens. That a gwaan.A the ladies dem enuh, then yuh have Cham and O - Wine.Meek Mills - Imma Boss, throw that in deh.Stay Scheming.Yuh haffi have a Tommy Lee so it’s Some Bwoy.Nuh Friend Fish - Bounty Killer.Although it old it still a play a lot, Vybz Kartel - Summer Time. Some songs just have to play,

Beenie Man - Let’s Go To The Beach.

S: What other plans

do you have for this year?

D: We’re going to Japan at the end of August like for the whole month of September...me and Jazzy T. We’re also now providing sound systems for parties and events and then our next party SVC (Swag VS Class) is tomorrow (Saturday, August 11). The Miami leg of the anniversary is the 23 of November and then Christmas Eve it’s the Renaissance All White Christmas Eve party. We’re also doing the Jamaican national closing show in London at the Olympics on August 12. For the party Saturday, patrons can expect pure vibes because we invite a lot of people to help us turn up the vibes.

independence WEEKEND ROUNDUP

All-white water party, an ATI first, last weekend, the Wa-ter World venue, two thumbs up, the ARCOR girls, three thumbs up. Its debut in Negril went exceptionally well as the event

drew a large throng of patrons out to get wet in what? All white! How crazy is that?! The tempting females stuck to the theme that was also well presented through the event’s decor. The musical selections paired with the liquor in abun-dance at the bars served well in setting the the usual top class vibes that The Official and Original Water Party brings. Well done Water Party.

Xtreme Wet N Wild - Wet N Wild sums it up, Xtreme says it all. The Kool Runnings Adventure Park was the location and between the rain, the pools and the liquor, patrons seemed to be soaked to the bone with the vibe to wild out.

All throughout the venue, patrons obviously heavily influenced by alcohol were seen just letting loose. It was certainly a wild one as they enjoyed the musi-cal frenzy dished out to them.

Xtreme Wet n Wild

This ATI staple certainly left its dent on this year’s Negril Weekend. The anticipation that surround-ed the event, especially with Fabolous expected to make his appearance, was well presented. Not one to disappoint, the event showed why it is a favourite this time of year and brought its loyal following along to stage a high energy rave on the hip strip.

The sea of white that lay before the eyes, and the ladies that kept heads turning all night was almost like a dream, but luckily it wasn’t. Luckily it was real, live in living colours. Daydreams was what it was expected to be. Good food, good music, good vibes - another success.

Two celebrations, two great vibes. ZEN’s Jamaica 50 party and its beach party provided to patrons a wonderful atmosphere over the weekend and by the look of things, they loved it. The smiles that flashed across the faces of the ladies were

evidence of that. They danced the night away, apparently with no care in the world. The men who were privy to this, of course they loved it. Overall, both ZEN events were good and held its own on the weekend.

The lovely ladies, the delectable food in abun-dance, and a lovely musical ambience… all this by the beach. Simply put, remember the clubbing that you all put down over by Fiction in Marketplace? Soiree took a similar system all the way to the shores of Ochi to shake things up a bit. SPF style.

Twas like the night before Christmas, indeed it was. The drinks were flowing here and there, and the air was

filled with merry cheer. The food did nuff and the vibes was right, most parties shot each and every night. Three party

weekends far out west, and the other weekend out in Mid-dlesex. The grand jubilation in the heart of the island brought

from afar, woman, man and boy. All who experienced it, you should know, but if you didn’t, here’s how it goes!

dRInk And Fell meRRy yeAh!When you go to a party, you drink mixed drinks. When you drink mixed drinks you feel nice. When you feel nice you drink more mixed drinks and a few shots. When you drink more mixed drinks and a few shots, you get either tipsy or wasted. When you get either tipsy or wasted, you sing Party Rockers at the top of your voice and do the shuffle. Sing Party Rockers at the top of your voice and do the shuffle. Drink and feel merry yeah! That was the anthem of many last weekend.

negRIl Weekend + lIquoRThe drunken body count in Negril was...WOW! Almost every night you look around, you see at least a handful of people being whisked away by ambulances or in the arms of friends. The reason? Excessive alcohol intake.

uptoWn BRuck-out At SpF!Whoever said that the uptown uptowners can’t dance, please rephrase that. They did, and they did it big! Whatever the cause for that was, the world may never know, but they turned it up a bit at SPF and partied like never before.

JuBIlAtIon Buck!People like dirt were at it across the island celebrating the big 50. Black green and gold litter the place! There were even some people with the Jamaican flag tattooed on their face (I can bet they were fake). Happy 50th birthday Jamaica!

JubilationJubilation50 to rhatid!

Half of a century, 5 decades, 50 years, it’s all the same. Happy be-lated birthday Jamaica!

The past week or two has been full of the celebrations that were expected to accompany the Ja-maica 50 festivities.

In many a square, bar, and corner shop around the island, a sound system blared the sweet Jamai-

can music that the world has come to love.

And like it was second nature (it probably is), those who gathered to participate offered no objection in dancing and having a blast with friends and family.

However, the Golden Jubilee vil-lage set up at the National Stadium was where patriotism was at its finest.

From the exposition on display, to the big stage where the perfor-

mances took place, Jamaicans wasted no time getting in-

volved in the activities.

And then there was the spectacle of a

Grand Gala. As

the name suggests, it was grand indeed. A sea of gold swept the stadium and like Olympic opening ceremony in London, the perform-ers put on a show for the thousands of spectators.

Last Sunday night, SLEEK was in Old Harbour square and a mas-sive crowd was there, the same in Spanish Town and even bigger in Half-Way Tree.

At those places, a huge crowd caused heavy traffic, all in the name of entertainment and cel-ebrating a period that comes once a year and an occasion that comes once in a lifetime.

Jamaica turns 50 this year, not just this August, so we’ll be expecting to see the Jamaica 50 initiatives continuing throughout the year.

The highpoint of August came through like a hurricane and blew winds of excitement and left the country on a high, but I’m sure no one has any objections, right?

In the extremely highly anticipated showdown last week, Usain Bolt proved once again why he is the fastest man in the world. From two consecutive defeats at the National Trials in the 100m and 200m races, to leading a field full of top class sprinters down the track.Bolt is here to stay!

It was quite obvious from his two losses that the naysayers were riding him. The man that was only hours before his 100m defeat, the modern day poster boy for Jamaican athletics, was stuck on the doubting lips of many. But he patched things up and showed them, Bolt is here to stay!

Some doubted, some still believed. But 9.63 seconds after the gun rang out indicating the start of the race, it was only left for the eyes to see.

Kudos to Yohan Blake for racking up his first Olympic silver medal and to Asafa Powell for making yet another 100m finals.

Let’s cross our fingers and hope that next time around it can be 1 ,2, 3.

Over the years, social networking sure has evolved. Before Facebook and Twitter domi-nated cyberspace, we used to worship websites like MySpace and Hi5. Although a few people still use older social networks like those two, the Internet is really seeing a huge surge in social media innovation. Here’s a concise list of some of the most current and trendiest social networks to be using in 2012.

FacebookFacebook is the top social network on the Internet. Nothing quite compares to it since it took over from Hi5. With all the changes it has gone through over the years and the recent roll out of the Timeline profile and constant upgrades, Facebook has always remained one step ahead of the competition.

twitterLike Facebook, Twitter has also changed over the years and continues to quickly expand in popularity. Centered around microblog-ging and a 140-character text limit, Twitter has become a popular social network of choice for tweeters

FoursquareLocation-based social networking is hot nowadays, and Foursquare is where the fun is. The idea here is to download the mobile app for iPhone or Android and check-in to venues that you visit.

linkedInIt’s known as the social network where

professionals can connect, and it’s hot on the heels of Facebook and Twitter. Indi-viduals can promote themselves and their businesses, make connections with other professionals, interact in group discussions, post job ads or apply for jobs.

google+Its big debut in summer 2011 saw Google+

as one of the fastest growing social networking websites ever.

youtubeAlmost nothing beats the YouTube. Nothing can match up to it when it comes to video sharing. Although owned by Google, YouTube is still recognized as a separate social network by its own, and one that revolves entirely around video production, vlogging/sharing, movie-making and music sharing.

pinterest

Pinterest is still young in the social network-ing scene, but it’s growing up quickly. As the fastest standalone site ever to reach 10 million monthly unique visits, it’s beautiful and instinc-tive user platform is turning heads online.

tumblrThis is another form of microblogging, but unlike Twitter, it is heavily influenced by image sharing.

StumbleuponStumbleUpon is surfing the web according to your interests. Simply choose specific catego-ries of interest and press ‘StumbleUpon’. You’ll ‘stumble upon’ a new page or website for you to view. You can submit your own pages, like other pages, and grow a following.

InstagramInstagram is one of the most popular social networks for photo sharing that the mobile web has ever seen.
