Pathways Peer TutorsThe Pathways Peer tutor program is a new

support program for students who need that beginning helpful bridge to make their way to success. It’s also a great extension of the classroom for instructors. Each Peer tutor is assigned to 2-3 Pathways instructors. The Instructors then decide how best to use their assigned Peer Tutor. They can refer struggling students for one on one tutoring, and sometimes the Peer tutor will attend and help out in the actual classroom. The Peer Tutor can also provide support for the Instructors with simple homework grading. All outside tutor sessions are reported both to the Instructor and to me so that everybody stays on the same page. We also added the Walk In Tutoring time where any PW student can come in and receive help with reading and writing or listening and speaking and also ask for help understanding other assignments from say, Chemistry, Engineering, Math or Anthropology. For the Peer Tutors it’s also a great chance to make a difference and share their talents and skills with international students and be a great Ambassador for OSU and America as well. It’s a win-win situation for teachers, INTO students, and OSU students alike!

There will always be students who need

that beginning helpful bridge to make their

way to success.

West Study Tables are here! English Study tables are available for

students living in West Hall on Mondays and Thursdays. West residents can come and get help with homework, ask questions, and practice speaking English on Mondays from 7:30 - 9:30 and on Thursdays from 7:00 - 9:00. Special thanks to our wonderful intern, Kathleen Braithwait (pictured) for all her hard work in expanding the English Study Tables program for residential students. She has successfully recruited a group of dedicated students and seems to be doing more and more every week. For questions, please contact [email protected]

On the path to success

General English Conversation Tables GE students now have the chance to par-ticipate in conversation groups during lunchtime on Mondays and Wednesdays in Marketplace West. Like the conversant program offered to Academic English students, the conversation tables allow our GE students to meet, interact and practice conver-sation with American students. Offered on Mondays from 12 - 1pm and Wednesdays from 1-2pm.

Conference Room SchedulingWe now have electronic sched-uling for several conference rooms in Heckart and Reed. These resources allow us to re-view conference/lounge calen-dars and schedule accordingly through Outlook or Entourage without resorting to paper copy scheduling! Visit the link or follow the instructions below (depending on if you are us-ing Outlook or Entourage) for detailed instructions on how to connect your calendar to the Room Scheduling assistant.

Policy Change for Pathways StudentsBeginning January 1, 2010, eligible students who wish to move from the Pathway program to conditional or full admission at OSU prior to comple-tion of the Pathway program, will not receive a refund of any fees previ-ously paid for the Pathway program. (Please remember that some Path-way students are not eligible based on the GPA the student had coming into the program). This is not to discourage INTO students from attend-ing OSU, but is intended to prevent students from using INTO OSU as a way to circumvent the normal admission process to OSU and to allow us to adequately plan and staff classes.

Also, just a reminder about existing housing policies: Students who are currently in a Pathway program, or who are provisionally admitted to a future Pathway program, are required to live in OSU on-campus hous-ing. There are a couple of reasons for this requirement, the primary one being that most students who live on-campus do better academically. Through a series of miscommunications, some students who were admit-ted to a future Pathway program were allowed to move out of University housing and receive a refund. This is against our policy and will not be approved in the future. Next year, we have an agreement with UHDS to make every attempt to have our students live with an American room-mate or an international student from a different country.

Program UpdatesOur Spring Term pre-registration date is set for Friday, Feb 26th. This is the day current students can access the Online Registra-tion System to register for Spring Term classes.

Students whose study plans end this term should obtain their Extension Request Forms as soon as possible if they wish to con-tinue studies Spring Term. There are currently 84 students whose admitted study plans end on March 19, 2010. Extension forms are available at Reed Front Desk & students will also submit com-pleted forms to Reed Front Desk. The official deadline for these forms is Friday, February 12th. The goal is to have all Extension Request forms completed two weeks ahead of our first spring Pre-Registration Session to allow adequate processing time.
