EDITORIAL

I hope you had a Merry Christmas,

and A Happy New Year to everyone!

Now when we have finally gotten

those tight jeans on after well eaten

Christmas, we are more than ready

to fire up the spring. Our team has

worked hard also on the holidays

to make sure that you can get good

vibes from the magazine to this cold

winter weather. Like in every issue,

we bring you all the events nearby, a

new recipe and interesting articles.

Insider’s mission for this semester

is to bring Kouvola and everything

here closer to the students - shops,

restaurants and cafeterias. To see

who is behind them, give faces to the

logos. The New Year gave us also challenges.

One left for an exchange and one went back

to home university. That means that our team

is working even harder and that we might

get some interesting exchange views besides

Carlow’s. By the way, the new exchange stu-

dents have arrived. Czech Republic, Russia,

France, Estonia, Germany, Greece. More than

twenty-five students from all over the world are

now trying to get used to Finland, Kouvola and

the University.Kouvola happened to appeal to

previous exchange students and a few of them

who were supposed to go back decided to stay

one more semester. So you may see people

wandering around without direction, mostly on

Mondays but some of them might just need a

bit of help and friendliness in English. Wande-

Riia

ring happens a few times in a month

also after Wednesdays. Yes, fresh-

men party again! This time theme

is Video Games. So in one week we

will see loads of different characters

taking over the city centre. This su-

rely is not the only party organized

by Kupla, so keep your eyes open

and mind even more so. Summari-

zed, whether you had some promises

for this year or not, everyone should

at least promise to take the best of

this semester and why not of the

whole year. Some rumours have told

that three years as a student after all

goes pretty fast and those should be

spiced by good laughs.

EXCHANGE VIEW

I am back in Carlow and I‘m ready for my second semester as an

exchange student. To be completely honest, coming back wasn’t

easy at all.

I spent my Christmas holiday with my family back in Finland. There

wasn‘t that much communication in English, even if Pieksämäki is

such a multicultural metropolis, so when I came back to Ireland, the

language was kind of a shocker. It took some time to get a hold on

English again. This meant that during first few days I was just smi-

ling and nodding to everything.

This time I knew what was waiting for me, which made packing

surprisingly more difficult. There was more stress to pack the candies

that you don‘t get here, some Finnish bread and chewing gum with

xylitol. Also you needed to think what you won‘t be needing here,

keeping in mind that you also need to bring all of the stuff back to

Finland in May. In September I was just randomly packing stuff I

thought I wouldn’t get here in Ireland.

The hardest part of coming back was knowing that half of the stu-

dents from the last semester are not coming back. You actually need

to feel an effort to get to know new people and I think it is harder

now that you‘re not new anymore. Every group has strong clicks as

everyone knows almost everyone.

However, many great people are still here, Ireland is still looking

green and beautiful and even the schools seems to be still interes-

ting. I think it is quite normal to feel down in the beginning, because

you usually feel a bit blue when you need to get back to work or

school anyway. It is just very important to remind yourself why you

chose to do whatever you do.

I still have four months left to travel in Ireland, meet new people and

eat many full Irish breakfasts. These are some of the things why I

came to Ireland and it is good to keep them in mind and enjoy the

upcoming semester.

PROFILE:OLGA NAYANOVA

Text & Photo: Diana KamaletdinovaHave you ever dreamed of making money from your hobby?

Olga Nayanova, the former Kyamk student, managed to

prove that by applying professional skills to a favorite hob-

by it is possible to create a very successful business. With a

degree in design and a passion for dances, Olga developed

the brand of her new dance school ImpressDance.

Why have you decided to open a dance school?

It was quite an adventurous decision. While still studying

at KyAMK almost by accident I started a dancesport career,

it was when I transferred back to Saint Petersburg in order

to practice more frequently. That was when I discovered

that there was a problem with finding appropriate and

well equipped dance halls in the city. At that moment we,

almost by chance, found a great location where it seemed

possible to open a dance studio. So this is how a decision

to open a modern dance school came to life. I also always

dreamed about building up my own business, so it seemed

to me a lucky chance to combine my life aspirations, to test

skills and knowledge gained through education and to do

something I truly like and care about.

Was an education at Kyamk helpful in your venture?

Of course, it was, and, I need to say, in many ways. Not

only did I manage to apply skills in design field, creating

the brand ImpressDance from zero, developing its values,

mission and visual elements, but I also used quite a lot

knowledge gained at business courses, writing skills (th-

rough my work at Insider), organizational skills (through

international tutoring activities), etc.

What are your future plans?

My future plans are to continue my dance career, develop

the dance club into a strong business that would be reco-

gnized well by society, come up with new ideas and ways

of their realization, get an MBA and some further education

in design field; and, of course, to continue living an adven-

turous life full of work, excitement, people and emotions.

Unlike Christmas, New Year‘s is much more

noisy celebration for whole Finland.

There is an impressive variety of parties. You

can organize a small party with family or a

noisy celebration with friends and countless

amounts of alcohol, unless, of course, you

are over 18 years old. Restaurants and urban

areas as well are happy to see everyone who

wants to celebrate New Year. Mandatory part

of the celebration - hundreds of fireworks

that do not give a chance to the night to be

dark in any part of this wonderful country.

This new year in Finland wasn‘t exception!

Despite the stereotypes, Finns are people who re-

ally know how to have fun, even when it‘s January.

Celebration of New Year in Finland may be an

unusual experience in your life. You risk to stop

thinking cliche and find out that people can be

not „shy“ here.

New Year in Russia is the most important public

holiday. It usually celebrated with family but the-

re are also a lot of events happening in the cities

during this significant night. It always accom-

panied with tons of alcohol, dozens of fireworks

in the night sky, noise, tangerines and Olivier

salad on the table ( the most important part!).

Streets in big cities decorated magical-

ly beautiful, that is the first reason why you

should spend at least one New Year in Russia.

NEW YEAR PARTY

FOR EVERYBODY

During the whole week before NY people are

like bees, everybody is running and buying

presents for kids, parents, grandparents, fri-

ends, friends of friends, kids of friends, parents

of friends, cats, friends‘ dogs, colleagues, bos-

ses, teachers and it this list can be a lot longer,

this feature can be considered as a Russian

tradition for New Year, everybody is receiving

many presents. They usually are put under

the decorated fir tree, as on Catholic Christ-

mas, every family has a tree in their home.

Besides this, inalienable part of celebration is

president‘s speech, which he gives five minutes

before January 1. Everybody make a wish when

the main clocks of the country beat 12, they wri-

te their desires on a paper, burn it with candle,

throw ashes in the glass of champagne and

drink it with a hope that all these wishes fulfill.

Estonian New Year has its own features. Consi-

dered that a person who can eat twelve meals

during New Year‘s Eve will have a lot of dif-

ferent through the whole year. It also means

that he is as strong as seven men and he will

probably have big problems with stomach:).

In other things, Estonians have the same joyous

holiday as the rest of the world partying with

a family or friends everywhere the want too,

giving presents and enjoying wonderfully de-

corated cities.

THE FACE BEHIND AMARILLO

Text: Riia Järvinen, Alena Kiianichenko, Photos: Mattea NäveriYellow sign at the city centre may remind us about summer,

endless nights and a little bit of holidays in the south but the door

below it gives us a good fun on the weekends. Amarillo has the

same mission as Insider. Both of us are planning to fire up the

coldness, give energy for studying and waiting that the summer

and four month holiday begins again.

Head of Amarillo, Raisa Hyppänen has worked for 10 years in

Kouvola’s Amarillo. With that experience it’s not a surprise that

Amarillo has their regular clients for lunch or dinner every day, and

queuing outside when the nightclub opens. Main point for this

restaurant in this small city is to give a face to the chain company

which generally brings stone-faced image to the people’s minds.

When talked with Raisa, I could not help noticing how important

the customer service is for her. Starting from Facebook to door

opening when the customer leaves, she wants to make sure that

the customer has had a good lunch, dinner or night. She has wor-

ked in the restaurant business for many years, in different places

and everything she has learned is still in good memory. Only thing

which she cannot have an influence on, is cashier and that it can

work slowly during a busy night. She asks for understanding from

the customers and makes sure that every crew member entertains

people hanging on the other side of the counter.

Generally Amarillo has from one to four special nights a month.

This January they have three and on February special nights inclu-

de at least “Penkkarit (bench pressing fest)” and Kasmir, a Finnish

artist who sings the famous “Vadelmavene (Raspberry-boat)”.

Raisa promises that this spring will offer more events than the

autumn.

Some of you have noticed that the mobile loyalty card no longer

exists so Amarillo has given students some privileges. Offers in

the menu of course, but also -50% from the entrance fee (except

special nights) on Fridays and Saturdays. All you need to do is to

show the SAMOK student card. From opiskelijankymenlaakso.fi

you can find more information.

Alena went to talk to Kupla and found out more about student

parties and Amarillo in an interview with Aleksi Utriainen.

Page 9: Vol 17 Issue 14

INSIDER MAGAZINE9

If you are a student at Kymmenlaakso

University of Applied Sciences, you pro-

bably heard of the Amarillo restaurant.

Moreover, having not so many bars to go

out in Kouvola, you may not only have

heard but also visited this place where

you more or less forget about this harsh

Finnish reality and have the opportunity

to teleport into completely different wor-

ld, full of insanely expensive alcohol and

loud music.

Life is a celebration and, being students,

we celebrate something almost every

week because everyone needs to relax

and have fun. Amarillo - what a pleasurab-

le word for those who are sick and tired of

silence which is constantly in the air in the

place where we spend our precious stu-

dent years. We’ve seen enough and we’ve

had enough, but what about those who

make parties and, apparently, hate ever-

ything connected with “fun” as we call it?

In order to make a good party, strong organiza-

tion is required. Who stands behind the whole

process of organizing? A member of Kupla –

Aleksi Utriainen was kind to answer a couple

of my questions regarding party organization

issues. Maybe you’ll learn something that you

never knew!

So, Kupla usually organizes different stu-

dent events in Amarillo, why so?

We arrange events in different places. Not only

in Amarillo. Next time we arrange freshmen

party on January 21st in club Touba.

Does this bar have special bonuses for those

who arrange?

We get no special bonuses from any bar. We

usually make new contracts about student

parties with bar management. Sometimes

contracts includes a few events.

Does it take much time to organize the aver-

age party in this bar?

Well it depends on what kind of party we

arrange. Usually there are about four of

us working in one party. We make pos-

ters & overall patches ourselves. That

takes some time. But in a few days we

can have a party I think.

Ok, how do you think, does Amarillo

stands out from other bars in Kouvola

and in which way?

I think that Amarillo is just a night club

as the other ones also. I don‘t think that

Amarillo is any different than other night

clubs in Kouvola.

So, according to Aleksi, Amarillo is just

another place where students may hang

out and get drunk. Some enjoy this bar,

others stay indifferent. Anyways, stay

tuned and enjoy every moment of your

student life, a big part of which is time

spent in bars and clubs in Kouvola.

Long expected and greately wanted, the last Hobbit finally came to the cinemas to give us the

ending of the grand adventure story of Bilbo Baggins.

This third movie starts off exactly where the second one ended. The dragon is out, killing people

and destroying the town and the dwarves are out for their mountain, gold and the arkenstone.

It is both less and more exciting than the previous ones. Filled with all kinds of things that

don‘t really belong there(if you‘re a book fan), but still keeping it relatively interesting, the

story moved along a little bit too slowly and focused on too many things and tried to explain

everything all at once.

The most amazing part of the entire thing,is the dragon, deadly and beautiful, flying in all its

glory...and then falling in all its glory. And,naturally, the giant battle scene. If there is something

that Peter Jackson knows how to do, its battle scenes. Both exciting and scary, they keep you

on the very edge of your seat and keeps you wanting more.

Bilbo is back at Bag End, lives moves on. For all you Hobbit/LOTR fans out there, are we happy

that its over?
