College Principal’s Report

Welcome back to the school year and a very special welcome to our new students, in all years, and their parents.

As always the beginning of the year is hectic for all staff, and especially our SASS staff in the front offices with enquiries, new enrolments, payment of fees, timetables, orders, casual and temporary staff salaries documentation, uniform queries etc. Again they have done a magnificent job in the three campuses ensuring a smooth start to 2011, and I thank them for their efforts in supporting parents, students and teaching staff.

Congratulations must go to Dux 2010, Lucinda Mansour, with an outstanding Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) result of 99.35, closely followed by Freya Johnson who achieved an ATAR of 99.0. ATAR is the new credential replacing the old UAI. The College had 19 students receive results in the 90’s and overall it would be one the best results we have gained since the College opened. These results once again demonstrate the high quality of public education provided in the Great Lakes Learning Community (GLLC), which comprises; Great Lakes College, Forster Public, Tuncurry Public, Hallidays Point Public, Pacific Palms Public, Nabiac Public and Bungwahl Public.

There have been a number of staff changes across the College with retirements, transfers and internal changes through the College EOI vacancy process. I know these will be detailed in the specific campus reports in this edition of the Dolphin. May I take this opportunity to welcome new staff to Great Lakes College.

Research shows that the more schools can develop deep and proactive relationships and involvement with their communities, all members benefit greatly. As partners with the parent body in educating your children and our students, we encourage all parents to be involved with the College, in whatever capacity, to enhance the outcomes of all students. Parental input is vital to all facets of the College ranging from peer reading, mentoring programs, canteen helper, helping out at carnivals, membership on focus groups such as merit selection of staff, welfare, Aboriginal Educational Consultative Group (AECG) and the P&C to name a few.

The next meeting of the P&C is Wednesday March 2 at Forster Campus, this meeting will start at 7pm for the AGM and then at 7:30 the normal P&C meeting will commence. It was very pleasing to see new parents coming along towards the end of 2010 and we are hopeful that this trend will continue this year.

Looking forward to working with you in 2011.

Head Teacher Nominated for Citizen of the Year Mrs Fran Ballard, Head Teacher of English and History at Tuncurry Junior Campus, was a nominee for Citizen of the Year at the recent Great Lakes Council Australia Day Awards. Mrs Ballard’s nomination came after a dedicated career as an educator including thirteen years serving the youth of this area at the former Forster High School and the present Great Lakes College.

Previously, Mrs Ballard has been recognised for her outstanding commitment as a teacher and executive member of the College by receiving the NSW Minister for Education and Training Award. Her work for the community has also seen her take on the position of President of Forster on Wallis Rotary Club (2005‐2006), where she is presently an active member and board member. As a Rotary member, she has had an ongoing relationship with a community from Tanna Island in Vanuatu. She has visited the island numerous times with Rotary members, to assist with community work there and she has also facilitated visits by Great Lakes College students and teachers on cultural exchanges to the island. Fran arranged for members of the school community from Tanna Island to be

hosted in the Great Lakes where they made visits to Great Lakes College and the feeder schools in the area. This active engagement with our near neighbours in the Pacific has proven to be an important step in our students’ understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity. Fran has led other overseas exchanges to Japan and Europe and continues to devote her time to helping others.

Fran encourages all students to achieve their best outcomes. Along with Mel Brown, the Aboriginal Support officer for several years, Fran was instrumental in setting up the highly successful Homework Club where students could gain extra individual assistance after hours. Both Fran and Mel were also responsible for the NAIDOC celebrations. Fran also promoted the development of the Students Take Charge Leadership Program to give students leadership opportunities and training. These initiatives along with many others are representative of the impact Fran has had on her staff and students.

Cate Dunn Teacher Drama and English

This year Great Lakes College will produce the hit Broadway musical, Pippin. Written by Stephen Schwartz (of Wicked fame), the musical comedy tells the story of Prince Pippin who traverses through the trials of war, love, and politics in his quest to find personal significance. The story is narrated by the Leading Player, who along with a mystical troupe of actors, attempts to thwart Pippin’s success at various points of his journey. The show is full of fantastic solo and chorus numbers and climaxes with an unexpected finale. Performances will run from June 23 to 25, 2011.

Students who did not audition, including new students and those interested in joining the college vocal ensemble, are also welcome to join the chorus. Vocal ensemble rehearsals, will resume after the musical in Term 3, 2011.

Great Lakes College Canoeing Report

“Great Lakes College Triumphs Again”

Great Lakes College is once again at the top of the nation in sporting achievement for their recent results at the National Canoeing Championships. There were 120 students competing from 52 schools throughout Australia and New Zealand.

The College was second overall behind Ivanhoe Grammar School from Melbourne which in effect means Great Lakes College takes the title of number one Public School in the Nation. The College had seventeen students attending the Nationals which were held on Goolang Creek at Nymboida. It rained for the entire week and the nearby Nymboida River rose to nine metres which in the end caused the National titles to be cut short by a day.

Even in the wet and muddy conditions the team paddled outstandingly with many first places being recorded. At the end of the schools carnival Lydia Toms was announced as runner up female champion which is excellent as she still has two nationals to go.

The boys’ team of Robert Coleman, Callum Leahy, Phillip Koch, Geordie Yule, Jake Perram, Blake Johnston, Kyle Williams, Andrew Moulder, Rian Lukeman, James Mannow, Kaspar Fiebig, Zack Duggan, Nicholas Jackson and Jordan Hallett was runner up in the Colin Cork trophy for best boys team.

Six students from Great Lakes College had been selected to compete for NSW in the State team at the National Canoeing Championships which were also held at Nymboda. The members were Phillip Koch (K1), Jake Perram (C1), Lydia Toms (C1), Maddison Williams (K1), Kyle Williams (K1) and Alicia Ieroianni (K1). These paddlers are to be congratulated as they were part of a team helped to bring the shield home to NSW.

Year 7 and 8 Swimming Carnival

Under gray skies at the 'Bullring' swimming pool, due to the temporary closure of the Aquatic Centre, the Year 7 and 8 students of Forster and Tuncurry Junior campuses plus competitors from Years 9 ‐12 competed in the Annual Swimming Carnival. At the time of publication, no results were available but a great day was had by all, with the students and teachers alike renewing and creating friendships across campuses.

The rain didn’t dampen spirits and many jokes were cracked about swimming in the rain and getting wet.

The Year 9 STC raised money with a sausage sizzle under the expert guidance of Mrs St Hill. Students when not competing, were entertained with beach volleyball and touch footy; most chose to watch and cheer on their classmates.

Thanks go to all those who competed, Mr Pino Ieroianni and Ms Christina Whitbread for organising the event and running activities on the day, the time keepers, the surf rescue team, the Year 9 STC who manned the sausage sizzle and the parents who came down to show their support.

Principal’s Report

It has been a great start to the 2011 academic year – albeit a very hot one. Several new staff members have been appointed:

We welcome these new staff members to our campus and hope that their stay with us is professionally and personally fulfilling. All students look great in their uniforms and as I walk around classes, I have seen an energy and focus amongst the students that is most pleasing. The twelve interactive whiteboards in the classrooms are in high competition between staff and students have been really enjoying lessons using this format. Ted Bickford has been up during the holidays helping us to get our toilet blocks surfaced with anti‐graffiti paint and we are very grateful for his support. He is also training a small group of Year 8 boys to be graffiti‐busters. It’s great to see the legacy being continued. Our Regular Assessment Program (RAP) is continuing this year with reports being mailed out to all parents every four weeks. The first RAP will be sent out in week 5. I would ask all parents to continue discussing the results with their children. Regular monitoring of workbooks is also a great way to keep abreast of your child’s progress. Once again there will be parent/teacher evenings towards the end of this term. I really enjoyed meeting up with several new parents at the most recent P&C meeting. I hope to see more of you at the next meeting Judy Hall Principal

FEES In Years 8, 9 and 10, some students select elective subjects which attract a fee for consumables. Parents signed forms acknowledging this and committed to pay the fees. Students who fail to pay these fees (alternatively, arrangements can be made to pay these off over time) will be asked to reselect subjects which do not attract a fee.

Similarly, Year 9 and 10 students who wish to take up a sport that attracts a fee need to make payments before the sport commences. Students who have outstanding sports fees from previous years will need to make good these payments before being able to select a fee‐paying sport.

Invoices for fees will be mailed out during the next two weeks. For those parents who wish to pay prior to this, please phone the school and ask to speak to the cashier, Gloria Rowsell, who can inform you of the amount. In addition to this, a copy of the fees for each subject is attached to this newsletter (see page 7) and is also on our website.

So far, there has been a fantastic response to the payment of fees. Thank you to all of those parents who have done this.

Deputy Principal’s Report Welcome back to all students at Forster Campus. We are looking forward to another year of academic, sporting and cultural excellence.

All students have settled into the academic year. We have welcomed six new staff members into our campus, a Year 7 group and about 25 new students for Years 8‐10. There have also been some alterations to the structure of our school day.

We begin at 8.50am with DEAR. (Parents need to ensure that their child has a reading book for this period of sustained reading.) Roll marking will occur at the beginning of period one each day. Parents need to encourage punctuality and have their children at school by 8.40am each day.

Absentee and late notes need to be provided with explanations as per Department guidelines. Requests for pass outs need to be presented at the Front Office before school. Parents need to provide an explanation for the leave.

Contact details – it is vital that we have accurate addresses and contact details for parents/carers and guardians. A blue form is available at the front office for parents.

Fees: invoices for school fees will be in the post in near future. We ask that parents start making their payments as soon as possible. Payment plans are available by contacting the cashier.

Year 10 School Certificate Information Night: for parents and students will be held on Tuesday March 1 in MPH at 7pm. We look forward to seeing you there.

Road Safety Parents are asked to ensure that our students are safely dropped off to school. Please adhere to the 40km speed limit before and after school. Also, please do not drop students off in the following places:

• The bus bay • The roundabout (this is illegal) • The staff car park

Principal’s Report

Staff and students have enjoyed a very positive start to the academic year with classes quickly settled into learning. It was wonderful to see students wearing their uniforms with pride and showing enthusiasm for their school life. As I said to the students on their first assembly, we are privileged to live in a very beautiful environment and to enjoy a school with up to date facilities. I went on to urge the students to value and care for what we have.

I was very impressed with the excellent start to high school made by our Year 7 students who have brought vitality and energy to their new experiences. I would particularly like to thank Year Adviser, Ms Mel Laurantus and Year Head Teacher, Mrs Lee Ralston, for their dedication and hard work in coordinating Year 7.

It is the time of the year when we determine our actual student enrolments which are currently at 520 students (which is slightly less than last year). We have a few staff changes. We welcome to the Mathematics Faculty, Ms Linda Elliott, from Forster Campus. Mrs Lyn Wright, the School Administration Manager, has retired after joining Tuncurry Junior Campus in 2003. Mr Richard Quinn, teacher in the Special Education Faculty also retired at the start of the year. Mr Quinn was a dedicated teacher and also a keen competitor in local triathlons. We wish him all the best for the future.

Our school development day at the beginning of the year involved staff in refocusing on the 2011 learning priorities in literacy, numeracy across the curriculum and student social and emotional learning. To support the establishment of clear behaviour expectations the playground has been colour coded as a visual reminder. In literacy, reading for meaning has become the key target with teachers focusing on improving student understanding of text through connections with prior understanding, skimming and scanning as well as understanding the writer’s purpose. The incorporation of reading and graphing data is the current focus in numeracy.

In our first celebration assembly this year, I urged students to appreciate that they are all brainy and that, like all things valuable, our brains need to be cared for and exercised. I reminded them that adolescents need at least nine hours of sleep for

maximum brain function. Most of them were quite shocked! At the assembly we also enjoyed entertaining performances from the Year 10 drama group who presented an amusing adaptation of the Romeo and Juliet story as well as the Monty Python duologue The Argument. Constable Brad Barry addressed the students about the important issues of road safety and cyber‐bullying. He also presented student, Bethany Nicholson with an award for fundraising in support of Camp Quality.

The STC group have been focused on fundraising to support the Queensland Flood Appeal. On Valentine’s Day they are holding a stall and later in the week selling maroon bracelets. I would like to congratulate the STC on their work so far this year.

Sadly, at the end of last year many parents had difficulty meeting fee payments for student choices in sport and electives. In some cases, students had accrued hundreds of dollars of debt. Unfortunately, unless fees are paid, students cannot attend non curriculum based excursions or end of year celebrations. I urge parents to contact the school to organise a fee payment plan if they are facing financial difficulty. While there are some funds for student assistance, these are limited.

I would like to congratulate staff, students and parents on a happy and productive start to 2011. It is a pleasure to lead such a wonderful school and I look forward to the many achievements that each student will attain throughout the course of the year.

Deputy Principal’s Report Welcome everyone to the start of another great year. I am very pleased with the way that students have started in 2011. I thought it would be good to revisit some very important requirements of students as well as providing you with notification of some important, upcoming events.

Reminders:

I have one rule: I choose what I do and say, therefore, I am responsible for what I choose to do and choose to say.

We are a uniform school and students are required to wear full school uniform at all times, including black shoes with substantial uppers. Even for sport, students are required to wear substantial joggers for their own safety and protection.

Roll call starts promptly at 8:40am. Students need to be here in time for this. Any late arrivals must go through the front office and get a late note.

Every student is required to have a diary. They are for sale in the front office and should be purchased by the end of this week.

If you have a problem with being able to purchase uniforms and diaries or paying for course fees, please contact us so that we can discuss how we can help.

If a student is absent they need to bring a note explaining their absence on the first day back at school. If they are absent for more than two days then please contact the school and let us know what is happening. If they are absent for three or more then they will require a doctor’s certificate.

Students are under the jurisdiction of the school from the time they leave home in the morning until they get back home in the afternoon. We expect our students to be demonstrating that they live our core values at all times, including whilst travelling to and from school.

The Lakes Way is a dangerous road. There are pedestrian lights in place to make it safe for students to cross this road when they use the lights properly. We have had two near misses already. Please talk with your children and ensure that they cross the Lakes Way at the lights.

Up‐coming events:

Tuesday February 22: Year 9 laptop and assessment information evening in the Hall at 6:00pm. This is a MUST attend evening for all Year 9 students and parents. They are required to bring with them their laptop charters signed, to ensure they do not miss the opportunity to receive their laptops.

Tuesday March 1: Year 10 Assessment and Careers information evening in the hall at 6:00pm. This is a vital evening for all Year 10 and their parents. There are special requirements with assessment tasks that must be adhered to in order for Year 10 to be successful in gaining a School Certificate. These requirements will be advised on the evening. It is also an important year in terms of work placements and consideration of future careers and progression to Year 11. Information will be provided on the evening to assist the students and parents with planning for success.

This year’s school photographs have been scheduled for February 22. All students are required to wear full school uniform on the day, NOT sports uniforms. Envelopes will be handed out in roll call. If you wish to have a family group photograph taken please contact Mrs St Hill in the library so this can be organised.

Vaccination Each year NSW Health offers the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school‐based program.

In 2011 the following vaccines will be offered:

• Hepatitis B vaccine in a catch‐up program for all Year 7 students who have not already received the three doses of Hepatitis B vaccine as a baby.

• Varicella vaccine (Chickenpox) as a single dose for all Year 7 students who have not already had the chickenpox disease or a dose of vaccine as a baby.

• Diphtheria, Tetanus & Pertussis (Whooping Cough) vaccine, called dTpa, as a single scheduled dose for all Year 7 and Year 10 students.

• Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine as three scheduled doses for Year 7 girls.

Parent Information Kits will be sent home to parents/guardians. To consent to the vaccination of their child, parents/guardians are advised to read all the information provided, complete the consent form, sign it and return it to their child’s school.

Parents/guardians who wish to withdraw their consent for any reason may do so by writing to the College Principal, Mrs Amato. The Procedure for Withdrawal of Consent is available on the NSW Health website at www.health.nsw.gov.au

Please note that for HPV vaccine only, parents/guardians must record their Medicare Number (all 10 digits and the 11th number located beside the child’s name) on the consent form. This is required to record the student’s health information to the National HPV Vaccination Register and link to the National of State Cervical Screening Program.

A ‘Record of Vaccination’ will be given to each student and it is important they provide this to their General Practitioner to ensure that records are kept up to date. Parents/guardians should ensure that this record is kept for future reference and should not assume that their child has been vaccinated if they do not receive this Record of Vaccination. Many places of employment now require proof of vaccination prior to employment or work placement/experience, the record given to each child on completion of their vaccination is adequate for evidence of vaccination.

Please ensure your child has eaten breakfast the morning of the clinic and is wearing clothing that enables the upper arm to be exposed.

Consent forms are being issued to students on Friday February 18, 2011 and must be completed and returned by Friday February 25, 2011.

Great Lakes College Tuncurry Campus is once again participating in the annual Clean Up Australia Day.

I’d like to invite all students and interested community members to help us on this day and give our local area a ‘spring clean’!

Everyone will meet at the Lakeside Church, Chapmans Rd, Tuncurry at 8:45am to collect equipment and return at lunch for a free BBQ! Don’t forget to bring your gloves, a hat, sturdy shoes, sunglasses, a bottle of water and sunscreen.

New Librarian Following the retirement of long serving librarian Mr Malcolm Peisker, Tuncurry Campus welcomes a new face.

Hello to all students, their parents and caregivers. My name is Carla Gillis and I am the new Teacher Librarian in the Senior Campus at Great Lakes College. I am very happy to be working in such a dynamic and progressive College environment and have been made to feel very welcome already. I have been a teacher for 14 years, previously teaching PD/H/PE at Lurnea High School and J.J. Cahill Memorial High School in Sydney, before moving to the beautiful Mid North Coast with my family. I have since taught in many local high schools.

Although having only been in the position for two weeks I have already noticed the (shared) library at the Great Lakes College Tuncurry is a hive of activity with TAFE students, junior students, and senior students constantly coming and going. The Library supports about 1800 students between the three campuses and, in spite of the constant activity, is a highly efficient and effective resource. I put this down to the flexible and friendly staff (there are three as well as myself) in the Library and the systems they already have in place. They have given me a smooth transition and I believe we will make a great team!

I will also be helping with the SRC which will be a great way of getting to know students and have a bit of fun along the way. I look forward to getting to know all

staff at Great Lakes College. I would especially like to reassure parents of senior students who require assistance with the information they need, to come up and see me in the Library. I will only be too happy to help.

ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS Think globally, act locally.

Students from the Senior Campus have started to meet on Tuesday lunchtimes to discuss how we can reduce the ecological footprint of the College. All students are welcome to come along. The following items are on the agenda:

• A revamped recycling program • Reduction of waste in all sectors (including

electricity) • Installation of solar panels to generate power • Utilising water from the rainwater tanks.

We have received a $50,000 grant from the Federal Government to install a 10kW system of solar panels, so we are off to a good start. Talks have begun with local authorities about recycling bins and collection, and regular persuasive enviro‐facts are appearing on the noticeboard in the cafeteria to raise awareness of what each of us can do.

For those interested in sustainability, the film ‘Gasland’ will be shown at the Great Lakes Library, Forster on Monday, February 21 at 6.30pm, $5 entry, proceeds to Flood Relief Fund. Gasland is a documentary film discussing oil and natural gas production by means of fracturing underground rock (fraccing) with potential contamination of underground water reservoirs.

Student Exchange World Education Program Australia (WEP), is a not-for-profit student exchange organisation registered with the education departments, is now accepting applications for students to live overseas in 2011/12 as exchange students for a summer, semester or year.

Give your child the opportunity to gain international experiences and language skills to kick-start a future career. Along with distinct language benefits, exchange students mature, gain confidence and develop a much more worldly approach upon their return to Australia.

WEP is offering $3000 scholarships for year-long programs to Italy and French-speaking Belgium commencing in January 2012. Applicants need to be in Year 9, 10 or 11 in 2011 and enrolled in Italian or French.

Rose Point Open Day

Rose Point, Coomba Park, is set to become a Best Practice Farm where ideas will be put into practice and progress monitored to identify the effectiveness of the change. They have been awarded funding for a three‐year project to improve both local water quality and soil health.

This first Open Day is to tell people about why they have decided to do it, what they are setting out to achieve, and how they will achieve it. It also shows the starting point, and participants will be able to appreciate the changes as they occur. This Open Day will interest anyone who cares about our local environment, especially the health and quality of Wallis Lake. (You do not need to be involved or interested in cattle farming, or live on the lake front, to attend).
