Experience Time Standing StillPriddy’s General Store has been an

important part of the Danbury community for as long as most local old timers can remember. In 1888 the building was built by the Hartman Family, and in 1929 N.D. and Lula Priddy purchased the building and opened “N.D. Priddy Grocery”.

Their son J. Elwood and his wife Pat took over the store in 1960. Since 1999 (after Elwood Priddy’s death) Jane Priddy Charleville has been managing the store for her mother Pat. Jane is the 3rd generation Priddy to operate the store, continuing the old traditions and maintaining the rustic atmosphere.

Live Bluegrass music can be heard at Priddy’s General Store at various times throughout the year as depicted in the above print. During cold weather the music is moved inside.

It’s all here, waiting for you to take a trip down memory lane, where old times are never forgotten. Priddy’s is where you can forget the mad rush; Where time stands still. Where you can slowly peruse the things of the past, letting your mouth water at the sight of homemade jams and jellies. Oooh, look over there at those homemade fried apple pies, so succulent and the crust perfectly browned, Priddy’s is a journey you’ll never forget!

Go Whole Hog In The Barbecue Capital Of The WorldLexington is so barbecue crazed it has some 19 barbecue restaurants in a

town of less than 19,000 people, giving it the most per capita of any city in the world. The city has a well-established spot on the Historic Barbecue Trail created by the North Carolina Barbecue Society, and is often called the Barbecue Capital of the World. The town also is home to North Carolina’s largest barbecue celebration, known simply as The Barbecue Festival. Held in late October, the event draws more than 100,000 people to Lexington’s Main Street for food and fun. Lexington and Davidson County declare October as Barbecue Month, so events are held throughout the weeks leading up to the festival. Lexington is so popular for barbecue, it ’s the namesake for the style of cooking used in the entire western part of North Carolina. Lexington-style means cooking only the pork shoulder (in other parts of the state, the entire pig is cooked), which is served finely chopped, coarsely chopped or sliced, but definitely not pulled. The pork often has a crunchy crust called

“outside” or “brown.” Lexington also is known for barbecue slaw, which is red and made with ketchup and vinegar. Make sure to speak up if you want it on the side – otherwise it’s served on all sandwiches.

Project 543 tells the story of unique spots across North Carolina we hope will become some of your favorite places. Why 543? Because that’s the number of miles from Manteo, on the coast, to Murphy, in the mountains, and is traditionally considered to be the width of our state. The entries in this project are in no particular order, and we’ll add to them each week. Check in often to find inspiration for your next trip, or start planning today at VisitNC.com.

Huzzah! The Carolina Renaissance Festival Celebrates The Time Honored Craft Of Beer Brewing!Local amateur beer brewers compete

for top honors annually at the US Open Homebrew Competition. The competition is organized by the non-profit club Carolina Brewmasters and consists of six separate homebrew competitions across the Carolinas. The competition lasts over nine hours as nationally certified judges review over 400 entries from across the United States. The competition is held annu-ally at Olde Mecklenburg Brewery in Charlotte in May. Brewers can compete for top honors in multiple categories: Carolina Brewer of the Year, Carolina Master Brewer of the Year, Carolina Meadmaker of the Year, and in addi-tion; the Gambrinus Cup Competition.

Amateur brewers must carefully cal-culate the ratio of various malts, hops and yeast along with precision timing for boiling, cooling, fermenting, and storage. Slight variation and any one of the many ingredients and steps in the brewing process can seriously alter the beer’s flavor and affect the style in which the beer may be categorized as (ale, stout, porter, etc.). Judges in the US Open have undergone rigor-ous Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) enabling them to successfully identify by scent, sight, and palate the various ingredients that make up a top-quality, hand crafted brew.

The Carolina Renaissance Festival celebrates the time honored craft of beer brewing during its annual BrewFest celebration held Oct 18 & 19 from 12pm - 3:30pm. Learn about the time honored craft of beer brewing. Sample a selection of fine micro-brewed ale and participate in a series of RenFest games and activities including the Saucy Wench Costume Contest held at The Haven (left of the Joust) at 2:00pm - where ladies are encouraged to flirtatiously strut their sultry stuff - all in good fun! Prizes will be awarded.

Not Your Typical Valle GirlsThe colors, flavors, sights and

sounds of harvest season in the Blue Ridge Mountains all come toget her at t he Va l le Count r y Fair in scenic Valle Crucis, North Carolina on October 18th. Started as a fundraiser for a little country church, it has grown into an annual happening that attracts thousands and raised more than $40,000 for High Country charities in 2013.

The Fair t akes place in a huge meadow between a picturesque red barn and a field of sorghum. The tents of 150 craft exhibitors line wide lanes that meander back and forth across the grounds. Bales of hay are stacked in the intersections of these alleys to offer fairgoers a spot to sit as they ponder which craft booths to visit next.

Two stages are set up to provide entertainment throughout the day. The stage located near the dining tent features the best in local mountain music. The youth stage located near the live alpacas, face painters and sand artist booth feature cloggers and other younger performers.

Food concessions include Brunswick Stew, barbecue, chili, hot dogs and hamburgers, corndogs, sausage with onions, ham biscuits, ice cream, funnel cakes, baked goods, jams and jellies, fresh-pressed apple cider, and hot-out-of-the kettle apple butter.

Always held in Valle Crucis, North Carolina, on the third Saturday in October, the Valle Country Fair takes over the grounds of the Valle Crucis Conference Center on NC Highway 194 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Admission is free and ample parking

is available in the adjoining field for $10 per car, $25 for a small bus or van, and $50 for a motor coach. For all the info you could ever want visit www.vallecountryfair.org
