DESCRIPTION

Dashboards and Saddlebags the Destination Magazine™ is the guide for finding unique destinations in your own back yard. Even if you can when Lake Norman was cows and not carp, you’ll find destinations here that will have you saying “I never knew that was there.” Lisa and I are very selective of our marketing partners as well as our editorial content. If we cannot be proud of the content submitted to us we will not put it in Dashboards and Saddlebags Magazine, period. So, if you are looking for new destinations to explore on your own, or ideas for things to do with friends and family you will find something new each month in your destination magazine.

Project 543 tells the story of unique spots across North Carolina we hope will become some of your favorite places. Why 543? Because that’s the number of miles from Manteo, on the coast, to Murphy, in the mountains, and is traditionally considered to be the width of our state. The entries in this project are in no particular order, and we’ll add to them each week. Check in often to find inspiration for your next trip, or start planning today at VisitNC.com.

Cast Your Line On The Nation’s First Fly Fishing TrailWith more than 3,000 miles

of trout streams and 1,100 miles of hatchery-supported trout waters in the mountains alone, North Carolina is a fly fishing haven. It is also the first and only place in the nation with a designated fly fishing trail. The Western North Carolina Fly Fishing Trail takes anglers to 15 prime spots in the Great Smoky Mountains to catch trout. Trail sites feature a variety of options ranging from wide-open rivers to small, secluded streams. The Trail website also includes information on licensing, guide services and accommodations for visitors ready to take to the water. The trail was designed by two out-doorsmen and fly fishing guides. Fly fishing is popular throughout the mountain and foothill regions o f Nor th Caro l ina . Seve ra l mountain communities offer com-munity fishing programs with rod and reel ‘loaner’ programs

for first-timers and novices. The state’s wildlife commission also conducts annual fly fishing clinics for beginners.

Film Junkies Guide to North CarolinaMayberricana: The Mayberry Experience Mount Airy is on U.S. 52 about 30 miles northwest of Winston-Salem. For information, contact the Mount Airy Visitor Center by calling 800-576-0231 or 336-789-4636 or by visiting www.visitmayberry.com.

Film junkies seeking a Mayberry experience will find it in the foot-hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in a town called Mount Airy. Actor Andy Griffith was born and spent most of his childhood here. In a 2002 ceremony dedicating a stretch of U.S. 52 Bypass as the Andy Griffith Parkway, Griffith publicly confirmed what had long been rumor: Mount Airy was indeed the inspiration for the idyllic TV town of Mayberry. Thus, Mount Airy finally staked its rightful claim in the annals of small-town Americana. Film junkies might call it “Mayberricana.”

Your Mayberry experience should begin at the Mount Airy Visitor Center, at 615 North Main Street, where the Andy Griffith Museum houses the world’s largest collec-tion of memorabilia related to the actor. Props and mementos trace Griffith’s television career from Mayberry to “Matlock.” Predating his television days are school annuals, photographs, and posters from Broadway shows like No Time for Sergeants and films like Angel

in My Pocket and Onionhead The collection, owned by AG’s life long friend Emmett Forrest, includes clippings, costumes, scripts, stills, and childhood furniture.

Jus t one b lock south i s the business district, where you can get a sandwich at the Snappy Lunch - an icecream sundae at the Blue Bird Diner, located at 206 North Main Street, and a haircut at Floyd’s City Barber Shop. You can even take pictures of a jail cell and a 1950s squad car at the local jail, located at 215 City Hall Street. At every turn are souvenir shops like Specialty Gifts, located at 140 North Main. Just a few blocks away at Mayberry Square are gems like Wally’s Service, a restored 1937 service station where you can drink an RC Cola and munch on a Moon Pie. Film junkies can see a show at the Andy Griffith Playhouse and spend the

A Bike Night You Can Bring Your Family To!Lancaster’s BBQ & Wings

on R ineha rd t Road in Mooresville is a family restaurant with a reputation for great food served in a racing atmosphere. Sheet metal, posters, all sorts of racing memorabilia wall to wall to ceiling. Inside Lancaster’s it screams stock car!

A few years back Jeff Lancaster built a two wheel shrine called the Hawg Trawgh. This cinder block addition built on the side of the main building has motorcycles hanging behind the bar, a covered outside seating area and a ton of bike parking. It’s a man cave!

Every Wednesday the place to be is outside. Tables and chairs are set up in the parking lot looking over the outside stage. The Lancaster’s team bringing you your food and drink faster than you can count the L.E.D.’s on that bike next to you! Even a few muscle cars make it to the show, but they don’t get the good parking!

Lancaster’s Bike Night has the feel of a back yard BBQ that’s been invaded by a bike show. Great food, music and people. You can’t help but have a great attitude at the Hawg Trawgh, it’s the place to celebrate down time with friends and family.

TAKE A TRIP TO THE TAPS.

Triad: A Trifecta Of Beer, Culture And HistoryA d a r t s c h a m p i o n w o u l d

have no t roub le h i t t ing Greensboro and Winston-Salem on the North Carol ina map. These two beer destinations lie just north of the state’s bull’s-eye with a choice of interstate highways to take you there.

Greensboro is full of opportuni-ties to sample North Carolina beer, and NC Beer Month creates an opportunity to showcase its suds savvy. “Hops Around Greensboro” includes a Beer Lover’s Weekend April 26-27, with a stay at the O. Henry Hotel, a beer dinner at Lucky 32 Southern Kitchen, and a cooking with beer class featur-ing Red Oak Brewery and Green Valley Grill. Specials at Mellow Mushroom, The Pour House and other venues are also on tap.

N a t t y G re e n e ’s B r e w i n g , a destination brewpub downtown, honors Revolutionary War Gen. Nathanael Greene, who taught British commander Cornwallis what it means to win the battle but lose the war. Two blocks away, the International Civil Rights Center & Museum commemorates a landmark moment on the site of the 1960 Woolworth sit-ins that propelled a movement across America.

Try a range of regional craft beer at Sticks & Stones, where the menu choices are named for songs by North Carolina native Ryan Adams, and at Darryl’s Wood Fired Grill, whose owner is behind the soon-to-open Pig Pounder Brewery.

A short drive away, Winston-Sa lem i s home to Footh i l l s Brewing, best-known for i ts stand-in-line winter release of Sexual Chocolate Imperial Stout. Though that particular brew is over until next year, others put Foothills on the must-do list, and smart planners can sign up for a beer class. From the brewery, you can hop a shuttle to BB&T Ballpark and watch The Dash while sipping the hometown brew.

At Krankies Coffee, the core brewing business is beans, but you’ll also find craft beer, music and a cultural hub. And at the gateway to Old Salem, Carolina Vineyards & Hops serves North Carolina craft beers exclusively.

Old Salem Museum & Gardens is living history at its finest, with tours by costumed guides, signature shops and 18th and 19th century streetscapes for strolling. It also includes the site of North Carolina’s first commercial brewery, Single Brothers Brewery & Distillery from 1774, and the Tavern in Old Salem nods to that history with North Carolina craft brews on its menu.

Head west to Lewisville, home of Westbend Vineyards & Brewery, one of several wineries in the Yadkin Valley wine region that have added beer to their line. The journey can easily continue on a freewheeling course along I-40 to Hickory, Lenoir and Morganton before heading into the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains with a visit to Blowing Rock.

Shine, Chardonnay, & Hops on the SquareA Brand New Reidsville Festival

Saturday, April 20, in downtown Reidsville, Market Square will be

“hopping”, with an all new festival. “Shine, Chardonnay & Hops on the Square” is a group effort being led by the Reidsville Chamber of Com-merce. According to Diane Sawyer, Reidsville Chamber President, “We had been talking about this idea for a couple of years. After meeting with the City of Reidsville Marketing Department and the Reidsville Downtown Corporation, we decided to move forward and bring this great idea to fruition. In the past Market Square hosted ‘Arts on the Square,’ which was a similar concept but on a much smaller scale. This event is designed to showcase wineries, craft beer makers, distillers and artisans. Of course when we were looking at what could be offered, we looked inside our own community. Rock-ingham County is home to winer-ies, beer manufacturer MillerCoors and Piedmont Distillers, Cat Daddy Moonshine. Also, Rockingham

Community College is kicking off a new Craft Beer Course, which is being taught by MillerCoors, so we thought this was the perfect time to establish this event. The business community has embraced the festival by providing sponsorships. Our three Presenting Sponsors are Reidsville Florist & Gifts, LLC, who has not only given dollars but has also really assisted in recruiting the wineries, Cone Health/Annie Penn Hospital and MillerCoors. Other sponsors include Rockingham County Tourism Development Authority, who supplied grant funds, Piedmont Natural Gas, Am-cor, Reidsville Community Bank, Chateau Morrisette and Piedmont Distillers, to name a few.”

The festival will also include upscale artisans and food vendors. Performing party music on stage will be The Pizazz Band and beach

music sensations, The Impacts. This event does require a ticket. Tickets are limited and on sale now. They can be purchased at The City of Reidsville, The Reidsville Chamber of Commerce or Reidsville Florist & Gifts, LLC. You can also purchase t ickets online through www.ticketweb.com. The price is $20 in advance and entitles you to a commemorative wine glass for sampling. Wine and Beer by the glass will also be on sale. Bottles of wine may be purchased but cannot be consumed at the event. All individuals sampling alcohol must be 21 years of age and provide an ID. Tickets at the gate are $25.

Visit www.shinetochardonnay.com. for more information, or call 336-349-8481. The event is festival seating so please bring your chairs. No coolers or pets are allowed.

Cruz ThruFamed journalist and North

Carolina native Charles Kuralt once said: “Thanks to the Interstate Highway System, it is now possible to travel from coast to coast without seeing anything.”

Were he still alive today, Kuralt would no doubt support the push to “take a break from the interstate” and travel historic U.S. Highway 21.

Once upon a time, U.S. 21 was the main thoroughfare for leisure travel between the Great Lakes and Florida, and a wonderful segment of this historic road can be explored April 13 during the Spring Cruz Thru.

The event explores 65 miles of U.S. 21 from Elkin to Wytheville, Va. And, one would be hard pressed to find a better stretch of Americana. The route begins and ends in great American towns, along the way passing through towns with unique names like State Road, Roaring Gap, Sparta, Independence, Elk Creek and Speedwell.

Participants have the option of either starting or ending in Elkin.

Whichever you choose, be sure to make time to experience the renaissance that has taken place in this small town in southwest Surry County.

Located on the Yadkin River, Elkin has emerged as a jewel of the Yadkin Valley wine region. There are several wineries in town, including the recently renovated Brush Mountain Winery on Main Street. New owner Beth Duncan restored the original brick walls in the downtown tasting room and uncovered a slice of Americana hidden for decades: vintage adver-tisements for Elkin businesses built into the brick walls.

Elkin also features interesting shops, great dining, hiking trails, and official mustering grounds for the Overmountain Men who marched from the area to Kings Mountain, where they defeated the British Army in a turning point of the Revolutionary War.

Each year in late September, Mount Airy stages Mayberry Days, a three-day festival that celebrates the show and its legacy. The festival’s parade features vintage cars, 1960s music, actors from “The Andy Griffith Show,” and look alike fans. During the festival, the downtown post office stamps mail with a “Mayberry, N.C.,” postmark, and the Bright Leaf Drive-In Theatre on U.S. 52 North screens Andy Griffith movies.
